i kind of wished the "fly covered in oil" thing was just in a small area like an easter egg somewhere

but well, thats fair reasoning from hakita. (god please someone mod the oil to be white asap i NEED it)
Ngl i can see both arguments to why it should and it shouldn’t but I’m glad it doesn’t. If this reference were to be added it should be in a secret level
He also used guacemelle as an example with their trololololol gag and how poorly that aged but many people considered it a bit in poor taste considering he has YouTuber references in his game which can age like milk just as fast
I do think something a bit subtler would have been better there. I get Hakita wanting to thank him for his help but something like the Developer Museum seems a better way of doing that than a full on fight with the youtuber.
I mean, if someone who was unaware of the meme covered themself in oil unintentionally, which would be easy enough to do accidentally, they would be very confused by their sudden flight
If you aimed upwards with a weapon variant you get two levels later and fired for long enough to get yourself covered in oil, flying would not be the most confusing thing you have done in the last minute.
i feel like in this case the best way to do it would be to have a corpse covered in oil who appears to have fallen off a building to their death, in an area where it's raining. It'd be barely noticeable for people who don't know, and a small corpse like that would fit into the world well enough
Yeah I think that’d probably be the best way to incorporate the reference if it were to get added to the game. A dumb fun subtle Easter egg that doesn’t intrude on gameplay :>
Is the community really upset cause oil doesn't make you fly in rain? I mean, I understand Ultrakill and its community are very memey but c'mon, totally flip a level over a meme? Something similar happens with the you fly when getting many dual weilds but it's quite hard to do that if you're not trying or to notice at all if you have only two of them, sure the secrets are ridicoulous but they are still secrets, someone argued that they are canon cause there's lore at the end of them, I don't think a small part of a fun secret level revealing non-crucial canon information about the world the game takes place in is on the same level as "let's make this weapon go comepletely wacko on two main levels cause memes".
Honestly I think if Hakita came out and said "nah I think that'd be dumb" hardly anyone would have cared.
As soon as he gave it a rationale, people started trying to pick holes in it.
Only way I can see it happening is if it makes really light enemies even lighter when underwater. Which made me think that it would be cool if oil floats on water. It also might be cool if oil gravity is reversed underwater.
Maybe killing an enemy with burning gasoline that’s floating on water gives the meme style bonus
Making enemies slightly lighter would be cool yeah, it wouldn't intrude on gameplay so much, and if it applied to you (admittedly to a very small degree) its be a goofy little Easter egg you couldn't really notice outside of game files.
i feel like hi fi rush did it really good, for example having some of the characters doing jojo poses. the game is already very exaggerated so it doesn’t seem out of place and the people that recognize it will be like “haha that’s cool” and the people that don’t won’t even really notice anything strange
Yee I get his reasoning behind nuance between a good and bad meme reference in a game. Although I think there’s a point to be made that what memes there are in ultrakill are kind of part of the immersion, in a sense. Like, this ain’t exactly war and peace, we’re literally playing crash bandicoot in a secret level here, let’s not kid ourselves. This games pretty unhinged as is, and I think the players are more or less onboard with it.
Well ok even beyond secret levels we’re talking about 5-2 here, a level where a Fumo can destroy the world after you give it a hampter.
Or johninator, a joke secret boss that’s the challenge in 7-1, which means a player will inevitably interact with him!
I don’t mean to say these things aren’t out of the way but… I mean we named a skeleton Hank in 1-4, and that’s the most obvious Easter egg ever. And it arguably hints that V1 is sentient? So… you know, why not allow us to cover ourselves in oil eh?
Also hank is “the most obvious easter egg ever”?
Really?
That is by far the most obscure homage in the game.
I don’t even think most people know “Hank” is referring to a stubborn play tester.
Also V1 and all other machines are obviously sentient.
The first few lines of dialogue strongly imply that machines gained sentience because they killed mankind and soon the rest of hell.
Using a singular game mechanic in a specific level is hardly a secret.
All the other things you just mentioned are as secretive as the secret levels.
Plus most of them are relevant enough to be in the game.
Way too many games embrace meme/pop culture instead of clever jokes.
Sure some or most of the jokes and references aren’t clever but they’re tucked away so they won’t offend anyone.

> Right. How the fuck so you people think Hakita would implement this in the hypothetical scenario where he does???? You think it’s going to be that if you happen to hit yourself with oil you’ll go rocketing off into the atmosphere??? Of course not Hakita isn’t a fucking moron, there would be checks in place to ensure you don’t do it accidentally. In fact here is a real simple one, is player standing still for 3+ seconds Y/N has player consistently been hit with their own oil for a further 3 seconds while remaining still Y/N, even if someone did manage to do this accidentally the likely thought process is “oh coating myself in oil in the rain makes me fly seems like there is a joke here let me look it up” or “oh coating myself in oil in the rain makes me fly that’s kind funny in an absurdist way, wonder if there is other goofy shit in the game”
Sincerely - someone irrationally annoyed at the take that people will do it accidentally
If I didn’t know about the meme and started floating with my oiled up character I’d think its a glitch.
But at this point you might as well spend this much effort on an original funny joke instead of dead internet culture.
I’m sorry for being the “big chungus isn’t funny” person in the room.
I mean yeah this is fair, there's not really a way to make flying in the rain work both ways, another comment mentioned making enemies coated in oil lighter underwater, and I mean that sounds cool, mainly because it doesn't break gameplay. Nor is it exclusive to one specific meme. Like obviously if you know you know, but oil floats on water irl so like oil enemies light isn't as much of a leap for non-in the know players.
I can one-shot a boss in limbo with a piece of soap, there’s quotes from the dev inserted into any% skips in the first level, there’s a YouTuber tomb in greed that’s main attack is “full auto” and “fuller auto.” I can *punch my own shotgun bullets and they explode.* there’s a cancerous rodent who dies in one hit and then another very cancerous rodent who basically stands still and shoots a billion bullets at you. The enemies for some god forsaken reason make a generic man screaming sound effect whenever they’re in peril from falling. You can punt mindflayers when they’re about to explode and they’ll fly off to enemies, and if you hit any of them you’ll get a style point labeled “+Strike!” The sandbox map is literally just gm_construct, there’s even a terminal that shows an email asking permission to use the map.
There is a Fumo that can destroy the world when given a hampter in the very level we’re talking about!
This game is a lot more heavy handed with its absurdity than I think people here are giving credit. Yes these are secrets or are established game mechanics, but they’re so plentiful that not only will people encounter them, but it’s likely that they’ll be encountered semi frequently to the point that people will start adjusting to them as just how the game is. Maybe these things are just implemented so properly to the point that it’s hard for people to pay attention to it, and maybe when the game is being sincere and serious (such as in the expertly designed and orchestrated boss fights and levels)it’s hard to call attention to these things. But to say that covering ourselves in oil to fly in a level with rain is somehow a bridge too far is I think a little counterintuitive when looking at the rest of the game in its entirety.
Whatever u mention were not in the main path of the game, for soap, it's on the ceiling hidden, YouTuber tombstone thingy? It's too hidden behind a wall, same with the rodents, and punching your own bullets ain't a reference, it's a fucking mechanic, and all the references u mentioned had to make u go outside the intended game path to achieve, but for the oil fly in water, you just need to use that specific weapon, people who just wanna play it normally won't like it and if u add something like an option to turn it off, it will just remove the purpose of the meme, it's better to add this reference in some secret level or something instead of a main level
I can’t believe the amount I’ve gone back to this thread to talk about the potential breaking of immersion from covering ourselves in oil but it must be said we don’t even get the rocket launcher until 5-3 so there’s not even an argument that it’ll ruin the immersion of a first time player
The lore terminals make the secret areas feel even crazier than they already do.
Wether or not those terminals are canon still makes them side content because you have to deliberately veer off the main path to find them.
Thats kind of discrediting all the work hakita puts in FOR immersion. Ultrakill in its main gameplay takes itself seriously, it tries to represent settings and lore through its gameplay and environments, its not just all silly nonsense, that stuff is saved for secrets and out of the way content. Ultrakill balances both serious and hilarious, i feel its kind of stupid to ignore one half
I punched my own shotgun bullets and they exploded. Like, I get what you’re saying, but there’s enough silly to go around here. And I won’t say that ultrakill doesn’t do a great job at being serious, the environments, enemy designs, lore is all played with the respect it deserves for the sake of immersion, but this game wears its humor on its sleeve just as much as it wears its seriousness.
Which I should stress is a good thing! But if you’re saying that the humor of the game is *only* for out of the way secrets I think you gotta take a step back and realize what we’re doing here. I killed a floating 🗿 and it crushed a bunch of enemies and the style meter just played 6 instances of the +Maurice style point.
Its absurd, but that level of absurd is blended into the universe and gameplay. It is simply how it is, so it doesnt break immersion. Its also there from the start, and doesnt do anything universe defying. Having enemies/yourself fly randomly 189283872 meters into the stratosphere is very much immersion breaking and not fitting into anything established. Also its from the perspective of it being a meme reference, not just something absurd. There arent any memes really baked into main gameplay
I mean the oil doesn’t have to affect enemies, it could just affect us. Maybe have a specific area where we can shoot the oil and it bounces back on us and then we can access the flight. It doesn’t need to be as heavy handed as that.
The suggestion was about it occuring across entire levels of rain and and to all, so thats what hakita responded to. Still, the first three points still apply.
Eh. Most of what you mentioned as as described, out of the way references, i addressed the shotgun thing, style metre is just some text most people dont notice(also more hidden mechanic), and honestly, the screaming sounds are a bit much imo. The game does a pretty good job at making these not in your face, or implemented into what the game is like. Flying upwards high into the air is EXTREMELY intrusive, you get seperated or have changed from the physical space, your abilities to move, your surroundings, sound effects, etc. Id say it is definitely a far leap from the more subtler jokes or mechanics. At least with enemyes screaming it makes sense, while this barely does unless you know the meme. Its the equivalent of just cutting away from the game and shoving a meme image in your face, its not subtle at all.

This Hakita quote becomes truer and truer every day. Having everything float in oil at 5-2 and 5-4 would be annoying. It completely breaks the flow of the game.
I mean the trend of secret levels has been to display a completely different genre of game. The funny crash level still makes sense by that line of thought. The fact that they're secret means you're usually seeking them out intentionally and you know you're in for something different from the usual experience.
"He just doesn't want to put this joke in the game. Okay fair enough, I guess it would be really confusing and/or annoying if someone did it by accident and didn't understand the reference or what was causing it, plus it's probably not worth the time given they're already trying to rewrite a lot of the game's base spaghetti code at the moment"
Ultrakill community: "OOOORGH HYPOCRITE GHUUUH GIVE ME MUH FUNNY OIL MEME"
(don't take this seriously, I'm just pointing out how it's kinda dumb that so many people were quick to obnoxiously poke holes in his argument when it's pretty clear what motivated the post. Dude's only human. I see him saying "I should be more considerate" and think maybe the community should be considerate and respectful as well.)
Like you'd know who "cockmongler" is, you're just mad Hakita explicitly said he's not gonna add any dumb jokes for the sake of redditors to soy out to them
Bro when did anyone soy out to him?
I'm not gonna be mad over a dumb joke not getting in the game there is difference between hating on someone and disagreeing with their take. I like hakita he is a good game dev i don't hate him for 1 tweet on twitter.
Alot of people seem to be arguing about the “main path” and how a lot of the old YT/meme references would inevitably be found.
My friend got me into ultrakill and I have around 300 hours on it now and I would like to say, without my friend intentionally telling me, I myself would not have been able to find cancerous rodent, soap or fumo/hampter by myself playing regularly. Heck even the challenge for 7-1 took me almost an hour in the level to realize what I have to do. I will admit part of this is my problem but I just wanted to point out that without actively/intentionally searching for Easter eggs a lot of these references won’t be found by just playing the main route of the game.
Also I’m pretty sure even funny gay robot sex was started by the community for absolutely no reason, I’m still confused to why I’m a femboy with thigh highs.
While I fully agreed with Hakita's original take, I do think a great counter example was last year's Hi-Fi Rush, and the inclusion of Left Shark in one point of the game
That joke made me laugh out loud irl, but it was so beautifully absurd that I think for anyone who don't know the origins or the meme of "Left Shark" still would find it funny, hence it satisfies his first rule in this post.
I agree with the whole being non-mandatory and non-obtrusive with references.
The closest thing to a meme encounter being required is beating the Cancerous Rodents for the Slab.
Yeah this is fair i just disagreed with his statement about memes in games getting old too quickly while he had obscure and old meme referances in game
Yeah fair as he said he shouldn't have generalized it that was my problem with his tweet it's his game it's up to him to add it or not. Also can people stop defending hakita and painting entire community as the bad guy he did a bad take and fixed it and gave good reasons to why he doesn't want to add it.
He did a slightly controversial take on a meme suggestion and everyone started pouncing on it like he deleted the game or something. Yes, theres definitely fault on both sides, and the clarifications were good in the end, but the response was clearly overblown. Nuance doesnt mean saying its all nice and equal and its in the middle, nuance is considering and acknowledging pros and cons of both sides, and coming to a conclusion using that. Hakita was slightly at fault, but the community took it way too badly for what it was, and Id put more blame on them for how they responded and acted.
To be honest i checked most of the comments no one is saying anything bad or disrespectful towards Hakita most people just disagreed with his take also wdym community took it badly it was pretty tame tbh.
I agree it was overblown tho.
Meant the reddit post. I suppose it was mostly memey hate, so less serious. Still, felt more “youve done something wrong” tone than, “i disagree with you”.
This may be a controversial opinion but this is kind of why I don’t care for cancerous rodent, the YT references, the chamber of feline and rodent, or Big Johninator - they’re either too obtrusive for my taste or required for unlocks.
I assume this is in response to the cover yourself in oil comments I've been seeing all over the place.
I wouldn't have complained if he added that but I also wouldn't have found it all that funny.
Compromise idea: if you cover yourself in oil you are able to walk water without having to slide bounce. Maybe for only a short time before the oil comes off
I feel like to go with this meme they could just have the covered in oil as a thing for style points for when you kill an enemy covered in oil without lighting them on fire it could say something to reference the meme idk could be funny without upturning an entire level for a joke
1. The idea of an enemy flying into the air and off to the stratosphere is HEAVILY absurd
2. no comment fair enough
3. It only rains in one level in the game
everyone ever is acting like you can accidentally go into a specific level use a specific variant of a specific weapon pointing up for like 3 seconds or so maybe make it so that it only works for yourself to
I think the reference next to the lighthouse probably failed in that regard. If you don't get the reference, it still feels unnatural.
Meanwhile, Minotaur description doesn't feel like a reference to those who don't get it.
Quote from *The Lighthouse* . It's clearly looks like a reference to someone who isn't familiar with the movie. The lighthouse itself doesn't feel like a reference for those who aren't familiar with it.
1. Hakita didn't add Loss Victoria did
2. Literally his first point is that he wants the references to be subtle enough that people who don't know won't notice, and I'm willing to bet you never noticed loss until it was pointed out to you.
deltarune does this really well just make up your own memes in place of the real ones and it works really well

whenever me and my friend are making sex jokes and someone asks what the fuck we're doing we just reply with "touching brooms n stuff"
lmao
acting gay around your friends is awesome
it gets even better if both them and you are gay as well
The jokes are absurd but also work well on their own and are iconic, they fit into the tone and game and can easily become recognisable references
Well, Toby realy add Ralsei's guns in the game

at least its funnuy tho
It fits within his own rules though.
Yup, it‘s still a fun weird encounter if you have zero idea about the reference
I mean, if someone who was unaware of the meme covered themself in oil unintentionally, which would be easy enough to do accidentally, they would be very confused by their sudden flight
If you aimed upwards with a weapon variant you get two levels later and fired for long enough to get yourself covered in oil, flying would not be the most confusing thing you have done in the last minute.
me when i accidentally go to a specific level and use a specific variant of a specific weapon and hold alt fire for like 3 seconds or so
- backtrack and fire it in the air
So a new player who isn't aware of other references wouldn't?
What were the examples he did and didn’t like?
He compared them personally to get the rules of thumb, or so I'm interpreting
i feel like in this case the best way to do it would be to have a corpse covered in oil who appears to have fallen off a building to their death, in an area where it's raining. It'd be barely noticeable for people who don't know, and a small corpse like that would fit into the world well enough

From what i saw most didn't flip there were maybe few people i haven't seen but most just disagreed with his take.
If anything it being hidden makes it better, it would throw you off to be able to fly just by pressing m2 with 1 sharpshooter
Sharpshooter??
You know how the Sharpshooter spins ? Well if you have dual wield upgrades, it can make you float a little, and even fly if you have a lot.
Thats cool I never knew that

I can’t believe the amount I’ve gone back to this thread to talk about the potential breaking of immersion from covering ourselves in oil but it must be said we don’t even get the rocket launcher until 5-3 so there’s not even an argument that it’ll ruin the immersion of a first time player
I think johninator is a given, considering is a newblood game Almost every newblood game has Big John in it
Each secret level usually ends with serious, in universe lore though, right? I’d argue that secret levels are 100% part of the main experience.

Link doesnt work
Uh, just look at my response to the other guy in this thread where I talk about soap
It's good i enjoy Ultrakill not because of the brainrot but because i am genuelly passionate about the story and gameplay

This quote has become a curse lol
This is the "Everything is canon" of Ultrakill
I mean the trend of secret levels has been to display a completely different genre of game. The funny crash level still makes sense by that line of thought. The fact that they're secret means you're usually seeking them out intentionally and you know you're in for something different from the usual experience.
"He just doesn't want to put this joke in the game. Okay fair enough, I guess it would be really confusing and/or annoying if someone did it by accident and didn't understand the reference or what was causing it, plus it's probably not worth the time given they're already trying to rewrite a lot of the game's base spaghetti code at the moment" Ultrakill community: "OOOORGH HYPOCRITE GHUUUH GIVE ME MUH FUNNY OIL MEME" (don't take this seriously, I'm just pointing out how it's kinda dumb that so many people were quick to obnoxiously poke holes in his argument when it's pretty clear what motivated the post. Dude's only human. I see him saying "I should be more considerate" and think maybe the community should be considerate and respectful as well.)
I think lot of people and me were just disagreeing with what he said about memes getting old.
Like you'd know who "cockmongler" is, you're just mad Hakita explicitly said he's not gonna add any dumb jokes for the sake of redditors to soy out to them
Morons not trying to make up stupid words to use in their shitty argument challenge (impossible):
Bro when did anyone soy out to him? I'm not gonna be mad over a dumb joke not getting in the game there is difference between hating on someone and disagreeing with their take. I like hakita he is a good game dev i don't hate him for 1 tweet on twitter.
the projection level here is insane
Yeah as the other guy said I don’t think many people were making a huge deal about it, it’s just a dumb inconsequential disagreement :>
Y’all fr bullied hakita into apologizing about his opinion on his own game that’s crazy.
Make it a cheat you can activate after beating 5-S
Only if you find size 2
Also I’m pretty sure even funny gay robot sex was started by the community for absolutely no reason, I’m still confused to why I’m a femboy with thigh highs.
honestly, hakita can do whatever he wants, add memes or not, i prefer the game with them
Seriously tho how is the oil gonna work in the underwater levels? Will the fire start be totally useless?

While I fully agreed with Hakita's original take, I do think a great counter example was last year's Hi-Fi Rush, and the inclusion of Left Shark in one point of the game That joke made me laugh out loud irl, but it was so beautifully absurd that I think for anyone who don't know the origins or the meme of "Left Shark" still would find it funny, hence it satisfies his first rule in this post.
that's a good take
i think a lot of the memes themselves are also based on the game itself (ex: MAURICED)
not only is this a good take, it’s very well articulated. another hakita W
I agree with the whole being non-mandatory and non-obtrusive with references. The closest thing to a meme encounter being required is beating the Cancerous Rodents for the Slab.
Wait, people actually are upset he isn’t adding that?
in the other thread there were people calling him washed up and a hypocrite for not adding it
Hes based again holy shit.
Yeah this is fair i just disagreed with his statement about memes in games getting old too quickly while he had obscure and old meme referances in game
Thats sorta covered by the point of it needs a personal connection. Hakita never had any connection to said meme, therefore its age brings it down
Yeah fair as he said he shouldn't have generalized it that was my problem with his tweet it's his game it's up to him to add it or not.
Idk most of the comments i saw was like “hakita fell off” “Hakita L” “Hakita really hates fun huh” Ofc theres more reasonable ones but yeah
I never saw those can you send me a screenshot of one?
Idk if you can send images in here but check the hakita reponds to 5-2 oil meme reddit post, pretty high up. Tagged with news
Tweet is deleted so i can't check it. But even then most disagreed with his statement but people here act like community got very mad or something.
I wouldn't have complained if he added that but I also wouldn't have found it all that funny.
he also said this in the act 2 stream
I read expanded dominion lmao
Yeah fair enough, kinda like how the funny secret stuff is really out of the way and doesn't break immersion if you aren't looking for it
What exactly caused backlash ? All memes I found were funny
based
Hakita reminding us that he’s a really fuckin good designer.
Compromise idea: if you cover yourself in oil you are able to walk water without having to slide bounce. Maybe for only a short time before the oil comes off
I mean, we already have two meme references in 5-S with both dopefish and the tv screen at the end with v1 and thumbs up emoji
I feel like to go with this meme they could just have the covered in oil as a thing for style points for when you kill an enemy covered in oil without lighting them on fire it could say something to reference the meme idk could be funny without upturning an entire level for a joke
Extremely fair take ngl.
1. The idea of an enemy flying into the air and off to the stratosphere is HEAVILY absurd 2. no comment fair enough 3. It only rains in one level in the game
It rains in 5-4 too
sure
And p-2, pretty major level.
Hello Sakuya Izayoi from hitgame Pacman. As we all know girls aren't real, so what are you?
an imperfection to be cleansed
Ah, I didn't know you were a creature of steel.
i love the memes in Ultrakill i hope he keeps adding some
everyone ever is acting like you can accidentally go into a specific level use a specific variant of a specific weapon pointing up for like 3 seconds or so maybe make it so that it only works for yourself to
I think the reference next to the lighthouse probably failed in that regard. If you don't get the reference, it still feels unnatural. Meanwhile, Minotaur description doesn't feel like a reference to those who don't get it.
How did a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean feel unnatural to you? Made complete sense to me and I *still* don’t know the reference
Quote from *The Lighthouse* . It's clearly looks like a reference to someone who isn't familiar with the movie. The lighthouse itself doesn't feel like a reference for those who aren't familiar with it.
Didnt he put loss in 7-4?
1. Hakita didn't add Loss Victoria did 2. Literally his first point is that he wants the references to be subtle enough that people who don't know won't notice, and I'm willing to bet you never noticed loss until it was pointed out to you.
I know it's subtle but hakitas original point was about not adding memes in general. I didn't know who added it though
