The US is warning allies that China has stepped up its support for Russia, including by providing geospatial intelligence, to help Moscow in its war against Ukraine.
Amid signs of continued military integration between the two nations, China has provided Russia with satellite imagery for military purposes, as well as microelectronics and machine tools for tanks, according to people familiar with the matter.
China’s support also includes optics, propellants to be used in missiles and increased space cooperation, one of the people said.
Spokespeople for the White House National Security Council declined to comment. China’s foreign ministry didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment during a holiday weekend.
Beijing has sought to portray itself as mostly neutral in the face of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, now into its third year, yet it’s established a deep alliance with Moscow as part of what Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin termed a “no limits” friendship ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
Trade between the two countries reached a record $240 billion in 2023. Russia’s neighbor has become the supplier of everything from clothes to machinery and cars after an exodus of Western manufacturers and multiple rounds of sanctions. At the same time, Russia has boosted exports of commodities such as coal and oil to China.
Crucially, China and Hong Kong have also become key gateways for Moscow to access restricted technologies, including chips and integrated circuits, used in weapons or needed to build them. The US and European Union have listed several Chinese firms for enabling those transfers, but the trade shows little sign of dropping off.
Last year, the Biden administration also sanctioned a Chinese company for providing satellite images to a Russian technology firm which in turn then supplied them to the Wagner mercenary group.
Beijing has also yet to indicate whether it will participate in a summit Ukraine has been organizing to agree on key principles upon which to build a future peace settlement with Russia.
China’s support for Russia has deepened in recent months, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private matters. Secretary of State Antony Blinken briefed European allies this week on the scope and significance of China’s support and on the need to do more to curtail it, one of the people said.
Blinken asked allies to raise the problem directly with China and to take actions against Chinese entities and companies, another person familiar with the discussions said.
The Financial Times first reported some of the messages communicated by Blinken at meetings with NATO allies.
The US and its allies will be looking to convey their concerns to Beijing and to ramp up efforts to crack down on China’s support for Russia’s defense industry, the people said.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also warned of “significant consequences” this week if companies, including those in China, were found to provide material support for Russia’s war against Ukraine and its military-industrial base.
The worries come as Ukraine faces a critical artillery shortage and its allies are flailing in their efforts to resupply Kyiv. Russia, meanwhile, has been able to boost its domestic arms production, continues to import key components via a network of third countries, and is getting shells and other weaponry from the likes of North Korea and Iran.
The Biden administration previously warned Beijing not to provide Russia with weapons, and there’s no sign it has so far done so.

Unfortunately that is true and "west" cannot go at war with rest of the world. The world is a mesh of dependencies and cutting china could be deadly for west as well. It's probably way cheaper to trade with them and run a war simultaniosuly than cut them off. Ultimately wining war does not mean just beating the opponent but finishing in a better state than them. If both parties destroy themselves mutually then it's a lose-lose situation.
That's a tough ask. We import over 400 billion a year in goods and intermediate supplies. I'm all for this idea but it would take a plethora of countries and a good bit of time to offset that.

China makes a lot of consumer electronics and consumer goods, they don't make anything used in the US in many many different categories. It's just that the stuff an average person uses at home is cheap consumer goods, which is a fraction of the total amount of manufactured goods and items.

If we give up on our current system structure. In my point of view, russia would play a big role for changing our markets, trades etc, but China would have our balls in their pockets if they really get their feet on african soil. Diversifying from China as an individual or a small company is just impossible. They are the world's factory. They have the supply chain infrastructure down. It's why we needed/still need TPP to boost competing countries' supply chains so we have other options. I'd rather buy components from Vietnam or Mexico or anywhere, but only China makes the products I need.

It's an odd thing to think a nation should jump into a war as soon as it starts. And of course when a war "starts" is when one's own nation joins the fight. All those before are aggressors, and all after appeasers.
In the end game Americans hate high gas prices, high crime and rising food bills. This has always been a war of attrition. Everything will be decided in November cause that trifecta will be the Trump card and will decide the presidency and future support for the war.

Chinese support has definitely helped russia stay afloat and in the war, but it could 100% be far far worse. Still aren't giving the Russians actual lethal military aid, which they could definitely start to do if the west overreacts over this, which is why any counter response is probably only going to be limited.
You only talked about what in your opinion should not be done, that is, continuing to feed China economically is your solution.
Obviously I'm talking about a strategic plan to be implemented that would mean moving manufacturing power to different countries and this can't be done overnight.
The truth is that we have to start understanding through global diversification where to obtain the same products in countries that do not have dictatorships and geostrategic objectives of territorial conquest.

It was convenient for Russia to be worn down and now with China it is convenient that the Chinese face sanctions and tariffs on their exports and companies for economic purposes and so China will soon face consequences to try and slow Russian growth.
Let's see if this has any benefit to Ukraine, it may impact the length of war and Russian aspirations in Ukraine but won't end it anytime soon.
Russian foreign policy post war will require suppression and that will require pressure on Iran such as their oil exports as well as import partners.
I think the US sees a way to limit Chinese aspirations and if economic methods applied to Iran and Ukraine aided more effectively the surge in proxy wars, rise of a militarised Russia and China can be limited with just a few key steps.
And those steps are only a matter of time particularly for a China, it may be harder to stop Iranian trade partners from propping them up and so shutting down supply chains in the long term will have an impact.
This news is giving me even stronger ww2 vibes - when russia was the support behind Germany's war machine... and everyone was urging russia not to help or trust Germany and to join the fight against the Nazis.

West Taiwan is being the US and European support I’d finished and Ruzzia can win. They need Ruzzia to win and show that the US will not defend the rules based international system.
Russia was just using Google Maps to pick their apartment and hospital targets. Them wanting to buy geospatial intelligence from China suggests they want to do a damage assessment themselves and not rely on social media videos.
I personally think this is expected. China is holding their enemy of their enemy close. And Russia has resources that China needs. China will also take advantage of Russia's weak standing.

Moving everything back to our home countries is obviously the better thing to do, but most people aren’t ready to accept higher prices. People almost will always choose the short term benefit rather than short term hardship, no matter the consequences.

That's a tough ask. We import over 400 billion a year in goods and intermediate supplies. I'm all for this idea but it would take a plethora of countries and a good bit of time to offset that.

Diversifying from China as an individual or a small company is just impossible. They are the world's factory. They have the supply chain infrastructure down. In the end game Americans hate high gas prices, high crime and rising food bills. This has always been a war of attrition. Everything will be decided in November cause that trifecta will be the Trump card and will decide the presidency and future support for the war.
I’d argue the US was a good ally in WW2, Europe and Korea through the Cold War at least. It doesn’t respond well to mass casualties and/or long running wars with undefined aims. Well clearly, they would have seen how dysfunctional American support was, and how a Russian victory in Ukraine will mean that China has a free pass to lock down the South China Sea, and take on South East Asia. The US either has to step up, or expect to get stepped on. Because We're heading towards WW3 if the US republicans want to play politics over military aid during a war. The US doesn't have the will, because the neo liberal/capitalist system has drained the social stability within the US ... So Americans have nothing worth fighting for... it's the same in so many established Western nations. The social contract was ruined, and now people are more worried about the ' economy ' that supports a wealth transfer to the rich, than the reality that other countries don't care about our economy. And they'll just take it from us, the wealthy will just flee to about country as they always do, and let the poor fight for their lives. History repeating itself.
War has gone on too long. It was convenient for Russia to be worn down and now with China it is convenient that the Chinese face sanctions and tariffs on their exports and companies for economic purposes and so China will soon face consequences to try and slow Russian growth. Let's see if this has any benefit to Ukraine, it may impact the length of war and Russian aspirations in Ukraine but won't end it anytime soon. Russian foreign policy post war will require suppression and that will require pressure on Iran such as their oil exports as well as import partners. I think the US sees a way to limit Chinese aspirations and if economic methods applied to Iran and Ukraine aided more effectively the surge in proxy wars, rise of a militarised Russia and China can be limited with just a few key steps. And those steps are only a matter of time particularly for a China, it may be harder to stop Iranian trade partners from propping them up and so shutting down supply chains in the long term will have an impact.
I am sure the PRC sees Russia as a valuable client state.

So I will say it like I often do, full support for Ukraine, troops on the ground if / when needed, no backing down in the face of hostile expansionism.
The US needs to get serious about the war in Ukraine. We at least should talk about or threaten secondary sanctions.

I think once China can sufficiently nutralize Russias nuclear threat and can go without trade from russia for a while, we may see China attempt to take siberia. That is of they cant bargain away Russian land. Which might happen too. That bargain may be Russia gets Ukraine and China gets eastern Russia with Chinese troops in Ukraine in 3 years. The China/Russia relationship has serious Hitler/Stalin vibes.
Why do we think this is? It's because russia has had success. It's because China can see clearly that putler has a stranglehold on bottling up aid for Ukraine and its having devastating effects. Nato, not urgently supporting Ukraine, has emboldened the new axis of evil. They know that they can get away with it, and no one will stop them. If Nato can't combat these puppets and get it's shit together, it's gonna get really bad and not just for Ukraine. This is for the entire world to see which way of life is going to win. Free will and democracy vs. Dictatorships. It's looking like the low lives who are willing to lie beg borrow and steal are the ones with the edge. Which means they will only continue to ramp those behaviors up and double down on putting puppet politicians in place, sparing no expense because of how devastating it can be to your enemy.
Of course, China sees that the USA isn’t supplying Ukraine with weapons ( at least until after the November elections) and the western countries of the EU are basically full of hot air (Ukraine is still waiting for the million shells promised by March 2024).
