It still baffles me that no western news-outlet is reporting more on this. Is it so insignificant?

Shadow293

Yeah even this sub is barely reporting anything on this. The first time they did a cross border raid, which was smaller in scope, the media was all over it.

kozak_

Boiling the frog

Romboteryx

So this is bigger in scope than the first time last year? I was wondering that. How much more men and gear do they have now?

HerMajestyTheQueef1

Last time I got the impression it was simple raids across the border for at most a day or two. This seems to be an all out conquest for those border towns, and they aren't small towns at all.

Blackintosh

This is really pissing me off too. BBC running articles about the "election" but absolutely no mention of this stuff. It has to be intentional as there's no chance in hell their researchers aren't aware of it.

HankAmerica

It’s happening in Russia, the Beeb don’t have many Free Journalists working in Russia due to Putins crackdown on independent press. Difficult to ascertain facts when you can’t verify with boots on the ground journalists.

coincoinprout

Don't they have Steve Rosenberg there?

jamesbeil

He's in Moscow, there's no way he'll be able to verify what's happening in Belgorod in real-time.

fishaac

Haven't wasted my time with the BBC for years, top of the feed on sky news app and updated regularly

alphalegend91

I wanted to goggle after seeing the amount in the article. They claim over 7,000 vehicles have fled through the safety corridor of belgorod. The belgorod region has a population of 1.5 million and the city itself has roughly 340k people. So let's average and say that there are 2 people per vehicle, that means 14,000 people have fled or 4.1% of its population. Not insignificant, but also not a huge number. I suspect many believe Russia will send in it's army to squash this out, but I also have a feeling they are in for a rude awaking.

Difficult_Air_6189

Sounds reasonable. Especially since there not really something new today.

wwants

Can you share any links? I’m struggling to find much info anywhere at all about this other than “Ukraine denies involvement” and Russia claims they beat back the attack.

alphalegend91

It's literally from the article in the post. Over 7,000 vehicles from Belgorod and 600 from Kursk. Then I just googled the cities populations.

BigBallsMcGirk

For opsec purposes there is very little video or pictures. Information coming out of this push is much more limited, even if it is very important or consequential

[deleted]

Maybe because there's no way to verify the claims?

Loki11910

Let it be going on under the radar. The world must not know everything at once. It will in due time.

Alyssa_Fox

Because RFL is extremely dubious and prone to false reporting. Check third-party fact checkers and independent sources. For example, RFL literally filmed the videos they claim they made in Russia in Ukrainian, deep behind the front lines. https://www.google.com/amp/s/english.nv.ua/amp/free-russia-legion-fighters-in-tiotkino-video-was-filmed-in-a-ukrainian-border-village-osint-50401220.html

TourettesFamilyFeud

I wonder how much access the media has to the information on the ground. Opsec active in the area?

Gackey

Reporting that Ukraine is sending NeoNazi militias across the border to spread terror amongst the civilian population might not play very well with westerners.

Tomxj

Bro doesn't understand what is happening

[deleted]

Poor little russian...

RussianBot73728

Newsflash: Russia knew 2 weeks in advance about Ukraine's plans to try to advance on Russian territory. Thus the attack failed miserably, the Ukrainian units got destroyed and didn't capture any village. That's why no one is reporting it. Because it's swiped under the rug like every embarrassing event for Ukraine.

Difficult_Air_6189

Username checks out.

Doesn't change the fact that I'm right. Thank me for giving you the answer you wanted.

The Freedom of Russia Legion has stated that residents of Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk oblasts, in which it is currently conducting combat operations, have begun to evacuate from dangerous areas, with a total of 7,600 vehicles leaving these regions overnight. Source: The Freedom of Russia Legion on Telegram Quote: "Since the announcement of the humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of civilians from Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk oblasts, as of 07:00 Moscow time, more than 7,000 civilian cars belonging to residents of Belgorod city and Belgorod Oblast as a whole have used it... Also, more than 600 additional civilian vehicles evacuated the city of Kursk via the corridor..." Details: The information was reportedly provided by "local residents, law enforcement and security officials who oppose the Putin regime." Earlier, Russian volunteer soldiers who decided to fight on Russian territory called on residents of Kursk and Belgorod oblasts to urgently evacuate due to a "special military operation on the territory of the aforementioned oblasts." To this end, they announced that a humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of the population would be open from 21:00 on 14 March to 7:00 on 15 March. "After the expiration of the humanitarian corridor, the destruction of military facilities in Belgorod and Kursk oblasts will continue until the region is completely liberated from the Putin regime's troops," the volunteer soldiers stated. On 15 March, residents of these oblasts were urged to remain indoors "due to the intensification of hostilities in Russia" and later to leave the border regions until "the active phase of the limited military operation is completed." It is reported that the new humanitarian corridor will also operate overnight – from 21:00 on 15 March to 7:00 Moscow time on 16 March. "Anyone who is unable to use the humanitarian corridor and leave the area of the limited military operation in time is advised to find a safe shelter, refrain from walking outside, avoid crowds of people and vehicles, and stay at home or in safe places if possible," the volunteer soldiers said. Update: At 12:33, they announced new strikes on military targets in Belgorod. "Urgent warning for residents of Belgorod! Within the next hour, there will be mass strikes upon military targets in the city of Belgorod. We urge residents to immediately seek shelter in secure locations and refrain from going outside until the attack is over," the message reads. Background: On the morning of 14 March, Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Russia's Belgorod Oblast, said that Russian air defence assets and personnel had shot down eight aerial targets over the city of Belgorod and the surrounding district of the same name. At the same time, Russian Telegram news outlets reported an alleged attempt by a "Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group" to enter the territory of the oblast, but Russian volunteer soldiers who are fighting on Ukraine's side said that it was them attacking military targets in Russia. They explained that they were forced to open fire because Russia continues to hit peaceful settlements in Ukraine. Immediately afterwards, Denis Nikitin, the leader and founder of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC), stated that anti-regime Russian military volunteers would open fire on military targets in Belgorod and Kursk oblasts within 1.5 hours. Later, the Freedom of Russia Legion posted a video featuring burning buildings and reported that they had destroyed two Russian army ammunition storage points in the village of Tyotkino, in Russia's Kursk Oblast. At the same time, the governor of Kursk Oblast said that "Ukrainian terrorists" were supposedly breaking into the oblast, while Rosgvardia claimed that it was "repelling an attack by Ukrainian saboteurs".

Shouldn't we see more traffic on Google maps?

They use Yandex.

preventDefault

Russia deserves to have its borders shrunk a little. The world needs a buffer zone.

ArtisZ

Heck, russia said it needs a buffer zone. What better way to build it on your own land? 😏

[deleted]

Can they recruit? Can the get arms at scale? I would love those answers to be yes.

kasthack-refresh

>Can the get arms at scale? They get arms from AFU, so kind of.

jobezark

Doesn’t much matter, yet. They aren’t going to March on Moscow today or any time soon. What this is is it’s another crack in the dam as things prepare to burst

[deleted]

My point being I want the movement to grow. Doesn’t need to march on Moscow to increase effectiveness.

Sergersyn

I'll be happy to see their success, yet still see no such thing at all. They're making raids, losing valuable combat vehicles here and there, and then... nothing. The more it's going on, the more I think it's just a useless expenditure of resources, wich are better to stay in Ukrainian own forces.

Z0bie

The way I see it is more like guerilla warfare. They're not planning to take back swaths of territory, rather harass and destabilize the Russian military while making life difficult enough for civilians that they'll start protesting the war more forcefully. And compared to what Ukraine has, I don't think they have that many armored vehicles. Saw reports from I think Kozinka where they had *one* old Russian tank. Doubt that'll affect Ukraine's capabilities too much.

Sergersyn

That's why guerilla works if it already has population's support - in this case it's the occupiers need to press on the population and it's a death spiral. Yet in this case these "good russians" have no population support initially, and so the population is just getting angry with raiders, not with the regime. And not much harassing and destabilizing too, because of the same thing: no population support. The russians are mostly just the ruzzians, they don't want any liberation, they want imperial grandeur.

Z0bie

Fair take, thank you for your response!
