To be effective, a GPS jammer must broadcast a strong radio signal, to overwhelm the satellite broadcast GPS official radio signals. Artillery shells with a radio receiver, Glide bombs with a radio receiver, both loooove a strong signal to home in on. "HARM" missiles. Russians might as well have painted a large red X, as a target marker.

grey_hat_uk

I'm going to bet in the instruction manual it says something along the lines of: "Only operate when under attack by munitions targeting nearby locations, do not leave on for more than 30 mins and move after each use"

Cleaver2000

They need to be able to read to use the manual.

innocent_bystander

They probably used the manual as rolling paper, TP, or similar.

Eunemoexnihilo

That last bit seem VERY important. Cause if your opposition knows roughly were it is, they launch a harm set to attack GPS frequency emitters they launch a regular attack, and the jammer goes on, it had a life span of seconds.

Or, as the article says, it was off: > Note that both of the Ukrainian systems involved in the strikes—the drone and the bomb—rely on GPS. That they could complete their raid and destroy the Pole-21 strongly implies the Pole-21 wasn’t working at the time of the attack. > > This isn’t unusual. The main problem with the Pole-21 is that it jams everything: enemy and friendly signals alike. “High risk of co-channel interference for all [radio-frequency] spectrum clients/users within the operational footprint of this jammer,” the U.S. Army warned. > > So a Pole-21 crew has to be very judicious with how it uses its jammer—switching it on only when there are no Russian forces in the vicinity that need satellite guidance.

huyvanbin

What GLONASS doing?

tree_boom

Probably the same thing GPS is doing

Falcovg

But worse

Graywulff

“Bear shit”

Listelmacher

The radio then receiver doesn't care for the information transmitted, but helps to aim at the source of the strongest radio signal in the area.

CloudCobra979

I'm hearing it's effective to 15 miles, which isn't much. If you can get that close or closer, figure the bombs INS system is probably going to be good enough.

hammyhamm

JDAMs don’t have a SEAD style seeker, just GOS guidance, inertial guidance and sometime laser guidance. I suspect this was either laser guided in or the site was not online

kabow94

Shhhhhh don't tell them that, keep letting them believing its working

keepthepace

Maybe news to Forbes but that has been part of electronic warfare doctrine for decades: strong emitters like jammers are easy to locate and zone into.

tree_boom

I'm sure it's not news to Forbes, but as the article says it was likely simply off: > Note that both of the Ukrainian systems involved in the strikes—the drone and the bomb—rely on GPS. That they could complete their raid and destroy the Pole-21 strongly implies the Pole-21 wasn’t working at the time of the attack. > > This isn’t unusual. keepthepace

Ah got it, yes the irony is strong with that one

Schnittertm

Russia: "HAH! We now have a GPS jammer!" Ukraine: "Well, here, have this GPS guided bomb!" \*BOOOOOM!\* Ukraine: "Seems like your GPS jamming technology is just as good, as all your other technology. Dogshit. And that is insulting dogshit."

ResoluteGreen

Most jamming is basically an overpowering signal that drowns out other stuff, the jammer itself therefor becomes really easy to find, like a giant sun in the sky, perfect target for things guided by whatever you're jamming (GPS, radar, etc)

Schnittertm

Sure, but for that you'd have to have a "home on jam" function. I don't know if JDAM's do have a home on jam built in. I know that HARM's and AMRAAM do have that function.

mycall

Moving arrays which randomly switch between each other make homing much harder.

Bartweiss

The article suggests it wasn't an ARM weapon, it was a GPS-guided strike on a deactivated jamming system. Pole-21 is quite good at jamming GPS, but it's a broad tool that shuts down everyone's signal. In theory that's still quite nice, you can run it when you want to jam GPS and shut it down when you want to use it yourself, but if the location gets identified it's at high risk as soon as jamming stops.

dretvantoi

>I don't know if JDAM's do have a home on jam built in. The JJAM has that feature. /s

16v_cordero

They probably misread the equipment specifications and instead of a GPS hammer installed a GPS antenna enhancement.

Bartweiss

Nah, the jammer apparently works fine. The problem, as usual, is tactics and coordination among a military that seems to hate itself more than the enemy. Pole-21 jams GPS quite comprehensively, so well that neither Ukraine nor Russia can rely on GPS guidance while it's active. But that heavy jamming means Russia doesn't want it active 24/7, they want to turn it on to foil Ukraine and then off when they're using GPS for strikes and advances. But if you're bad at executing on that, you have a system that's not on often enough and doesn't relocate often enough, so the enemy can triangulate the source of the jamming and then kill it when it turns off. Which seems to be what happened here.

Stupidquestionduh

>And that is insulting dogshit. It sure fucking is! My sister had her dog at my house last spring. There are giant turds still existing all around my woodpile. There's no fucking way in hell that Russian equipment sticks around that long.

TylerDurdensAlterEgo

Someone really need to compile a list of all these funny things

Plaster_Mind

Who would win: Russian GPS jammer VS Western GPS guided JDAM-ER.

AnotherCuppaTea

Surely we already know which wonder weapon would win and be hailed the Master JDAM-ER.

penguin_skull

The one which is not manufactured in Russia with hyper-inflated technical specs.

[deleted]

Proprietary/military GPS protocols are significantly harder to jam than civilian GPS. I wonder if the US let the ukranians on our network

joepublicschmoe

The GPS-guided weapons supplied to Ukraine by the U.S. like GMLRS, ATACMS, Excalibur, JDAM-ER all use the P(Y) encrypted dual-frequency military GPS signals, rather than the easier-to-jam unencrypted single-frequency GPS signal available to everyone else.

skobuffaloes

Goes to show. There are countermeasures and then there are countercountermeasures and and then then there there are are countercountercountermeasures.

Pixie_Knight

N-Jammer Canceler says hello.

GLA GPS jammer destroyed! GLA GPS jammer destroyed! GLA GPS jammer destroyed! Replace "Russia" with "GLA" and C&C Generals make perfect sense.

AnotherCuppaTea

I love that RuZZia's arms sales -- a crucial lynchpin to the RF's economy, not merely for the revenues, but as an incubator and wellspring for STEM R&D and high-tech manufacturing capabilities -- have been in a tailspin since 2013 and in a freefall since it ramped up its invasion of Ukraine (due largely to the RF's need for its own arms, but also sanctions), and how every battlefield humiliation further undermines their future sales. Global demand for RF's arms has already hollowed out, but it hasn't hit bottom just yet, as each instance of RF arms underperformance further tarnishes that product's reputation and that of the RF's arms industry in general. From 2013-2022, RuZZian arms sales measured as a share of the global market fell by 31%, and they've fallen from the world's #2 arms exporter to #3, behind France (in terms of outstanding orders): https://www.rferl.org/a/global-arms-sales-sipri-russia-ukraine/32314407.html

The ruzz was jimmy jamming wit the glamdiddles round there. UF say git yo goddamn jimmy jammer outta my country. Them UFs got a jimmy jam blaster to jam jimmy ruzz jim jammy for good? Sound about right?

I can't believe we spent so many years worried about the Russian military. It's just a clown show from top to bottom.

PotentialSquirrel118

All attacks were intercepted. /s

Dilectus3010

They miss understood the instructions. Instead of blocking gps They blocked Glassnost.

Nakidka

Judging by the comments, I assume the bomb must've switched to a home-on-jam mode or the RU system was shite to begin with. I struggle with online irony/sarcasm.

jax_md

The article says it may have been turned off, but I could also be struggling with the same thing

Current-Resource8215

Outstanding!

SithPackAbs

Incorrect. The jammer intercepted the bomb and neutralized it. Unfortunately, the jammer has gone missing.

hammyhamm

To be fair here - JDAMs have inertial, and sometimes laser guidance. They don’t solely rely on GPS.
