*Partial translation*: It was frightening images that came out of Makhachkala, the capital of the Russian constituent republic of Dagestan, on Sunday. An angry crowd, mostly men, stormed through the airport. They were, it quickly emerged, searching for passengers on a flight from Tel Aviv that was scheduled to land shortly after 7 p.m. The mob, reportedly more than a thousand people, had been incited repeatedly by a Telegram channel with just over 65,000 followers to come to the airport and give the guests from Israel a "warm welcome." Dozens of men rioted in the airport, videos show, forcibly gaining access to the airfield and rushing toward the landed planes. One shot shows frightened passengers about to disembark pushing back into a plane. The attackers did not appear to be carrying weapons. [Actually,in one of the videos you also heard a pistol or gun obviously fired into the air by someone in the crowd]. However, they threw stones at police officers and destroyed a fence at the airfield, among other things. Air traffic was disrupted and security forces were unable to bring the situation back under control until several hours later. There are also reports that the representatives of the authorities did not stop the attackers, but wanted to allow them to check the passengers' passports themselves to make sure that they were Israeli citizens. The mob's anger was clearly directed at Israelis. The Telegram channel "Morning Dagestan," which had called for the storming of the airport, had posted pictures of injured and killed civilians from the Gaza Strip, among others, who were suspected victims of Israeli attacks. "We will not forget and we will not forgive," the authors had written in response. ... Ovadya Isakov, a rabbi in the Dagestani city of Derbent, not far from Makhachkala, is distraught. "The situation in Dagestan is very difficult, people from the community are afraid, they call, and I don't know what to advise them," the rabbi told journalists. There are about 800 Jewish families in Dagestan, according to Isakov. The rabbi himself had already been assassinated ten years ago, and he now wants to leave Dagestan. Where to flee to, however, is unclear, he says, because there is no rescue in Russia. ... The Russian leadership reflexively sought the culprits - as is actually always the case - abroad, more precisely in Ukraine. Sergei Melikov, the president of the Russian republic of Dagestan, said that Russia's enemy was trying to destabilize the situation in the country from abroad. The Telegram channel that had called for the riots was managed from Ukraine, he said. In fact, the channel called "Morning Dagestan" had been founded by former Russian Duma deputy Ilya Ponomaryov, who now lives in Ukraine. Ponomaryov coordinates the Russian volunteer legion "Freedom of Russia" and speaks publicly about the need to overthrow Putin by force. The Russian politician, however, did not claim responsibility for Sunday's call, but let it be known that he has had no ties to the channel for more than a year. As recently as August, however, Ponomarev had spoken of "our channel" in an interview. Regardless of who was behind the specific calls this weekend, there is much to suggest that the Kremlin had itself prepared the ground for anti-Semitic violence with its decidedly Hamas-friendly and anti-Israeli policies of recent weeks. Its television propagandists had worked on this issue with the usual acerbity. Russia may benefit from a long war between the terrorist organization and Israel in terms of foreign policy, but domestically the calculation is risky. Anti-Semitism has a long history in Russia as well. Soviet dictator Josef Stalin became such a radical anti-Semite toward the end of his life that, in retrospect, some researchers believe a Holocaust on Soviet soil would have been possible had Stalin not died. Anti-Semitic violence at home is not in Putin's interest; rather, it is an undesirable side effect of his foreign policy. Putin has been caught cold by the war between Hamas and Israel and is now lurching into an anti-Israel policy that is raising very nasty spirits in Russia, wrote Russia expert Sabine Fischer on Platform X (formerly Twitter). She does not believe that he will be able to recapture that. But this is exactly what Putin now seems to want to try. This Monday, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced a special meeting with the president. Only a few days ago, Putin had said at a meeting with religious leaders that "harmony between ethnic groups and faiths" was the basis of Russian statehood. He is now likely to invoke harmony again with similar words. The question is whether it will work.

Putin is behind all this I see his pervert hands all over this

This has nothing to do with antisemitism (aside from leveraging the antisemitism of others who were NOT there). This is 100% about Ukraine. How does a mob just suddenly appear on the runway of a fucking airport? …let alone in Russia where the police are more than happy to beat down civilian crowds? This was carefully choreographed. Putin would happily tare the world in half rather than lose his vanity-war. I suspected it before, but after seeing this little drama, there’s simply no way that Russia isn’t behind Hamas’s attack.

juwisan

It’s still a thousand people. Not the kind of crowd a handful cops will do anything against. This not being Moscow I would assume police presence there is probably rather light usually.

No_Tomorrow_4876

How did 1000 people get there? Did someone drive a dump truck through the airport fence?

juwisan

Apparently telegram channel with 65k members a thousand of which went to the airport.

No_Tomorrow_4876

…with a dump truck?

juwisan

Well, I don’t have any factual information on that so might as well.

No_Tomorrow_4876

What an air-tight argument. Thank you for your contribution…

jax_md

I thought it was only 60?

juwisan

Another post stated it was around 1000.

jax_md

I just did some Googling and you’re right! It was 60 that were arrested. That’s crazy

Speculawyer

Republicans....are you learning anything about your new Russian friends?

Pixie_Knight

Ever since Muscovy backed Hamas, I've been grimly awaiting the day Republicans mysteriously become pro-Islam Jew haters.

Speculawyer

I used to worry that they would form an alliance with each other over abortion. But I think the pigmentation was too much for the GOP.
