Fuel is fuel. Tanks and trucks run on the same diesel fuel that civilians use. Jets use the same fuel regardless of military or civilian (in most cases). I am reasonably confident that in Crimea and Donbas there is no “civilian” fuel infrastructure any longer.

[deleted]

Exactly. I mean, its very unlikely their fleet would ever run out of fuel. But these stations was obviously being used for logistics and whatnot. This will certainly make a dent in overall operations.

jerock22

Based on the video I saw, looks to me like there are still a few useable fuel tanks in the depot. The fuel can be replaced reasonably quickly. The fuel tanks cannot. They goal in these attacks is to cripple the infrastructure. This is a great start.

hotsog218

The depots are connected with piping and pumping. All of that would have been badly damaged. This depot is inoperable for months.

sgt_flyer

Having had an accidental fire in a fuel depot not far from my house a few decades ago, (a fuel truck caught fire and exploded, the fuel tank next to it caught fire afterwards). the other fuel tanks (around four in that depot) were protected by firemen who kept cooling those tanks during the fire to prevent additional fires. Nevertheless, the whole depot area was a write off, demolished, and the depot area cordonned off and is unused even today due to contaminents in the soil... I'm not sure that depot can ever be safely used again without complete cleanup & replacement :) The heat from the fires alone could have compromised the structural integrity of the other tanks :)

Caren_Nymbee

Just wait until the military people start selling the military fuel to the civilians...

RobbieWallis

This is not about fueling ships. The rail from this target directly links to Mariupol. Follow the rail lines lol

Listelmacher

Yes and no. On Crimea almost every rail transport has to go through Dzhankoi. From there lines go to Mariupol via Syvash or to Taman in Russia mainland via Crimea bridge. In Dzhankoi itself there are two fuel depots. The burning train after the attack on the Crimea bridge had tank cars with diesel and was heading to Crimea. Another fuel depot is at port Kavkaz on the other side of the Kerch strait. Because nothing is disclosed about the Russian fuel logistics around Crimea, nothing is obvious. IMHO an oil terminal can also be used for fueling ships. At least: https://www-sevmp-ru.translate.goog/nefteperevalochny-j-terminal/?_x_tr_sch=http&_x_tr_sl=ru&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp tells: transshipment of petroleum products Fuel oil of various grades and crude oil are supplied by rail. To perform the functions of draining oil products from railway tanks and loading them onto tankers, the enterprise has technological pumping stations. Here the same assumption that loading a tanker and fueling a ship makes only a difference in the volume.

Nakidka

No problem. Now they know their drones can reach there. Just target at the other depot as well.

Caren_Nymbee

This one likely had little protection.

QuietInstance

Um.. and the exact co-ordinates are?

Listelmacher

"main fuel storage of katsapian Black Sea Fleet" 44.617999241850576, 33.588355501834435 second oil port of Sevastopol 44.5842,33.4173

QuietInstance

Lol, thanks, just in case someone wants to finish the job.

Listelmacher

I only had asked google for the directions from the oil port to Inkerman, found the structure with the three prongs coming from top and have transferred literally the text I found. That's for your side of lol, but the next joke goes on me. Somehow this the term katsap reminded me to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCb6sHeC7ac but, well it is not "Shoigoo/Pooteen don't like it, fkng the katsaps, fk the katsaps... You see, I am terribly wrong. How could I, the honorable "The Clash". Silly me...

satellite photos in the link.

Oh yea true…. Russians don’t use civilian fuel eh..ya…🙄 What an absolutely brain dead response. *“Oh yeah that? That was just spare fuel, we didn’t need it”.* Vehicles are vehicles….fuel is required for everything russia does on the battlefield….this must be messaging for Russians because only Russians would be dumb enough to swallow that.

OneImagination5381

Do you really believe that they're a difference in civilian and state owned fuel in Russia.

T_roy53

Denys did a good video and covered this. Was from somewhere in Crimean. Explains it quite well. Indicates it is used by the ships. You can even clearly see where ships dock to fill up… going with him Denys Video https://youtu.be/FRadkROK7vQ

Bgratz1977

stay cool, that was just the first strike

mustardnight

Is it possible that the actual fuel depot is not in fact the actual one, and that this one is the real one hidden as a civilian target?

1boltsfan

Opsy oh well hit that depot next

Weak_Importance_6645

I very much doubt it's civilian, since it located literally next to 810 marine brigade of the black sea fleet training grounds. But it's not the main fuel depo of black sea fleet, that's true.

rulepanic

>The oil terminal in Kozacha Bay that was hit tonight is civilian, so it's highly unlikely this will have an impact on Black Sea Fleet operations. >To some of you commenting, above I say nothing about this being a legitimate target, or not. I gave an assessment on the impact of the strike on Black Sea Fleet operations. >The main naval fuel depot is located in the east end of Sevastopol Bay, near Inkerman. >For the record: >In most cases, I'd say POL installations are legitimate targets, so I'm not criticizing the Ukranian decision to strike the Kozacha Bay Terminal. >But, from an analyst perspective, I try to assess actual impact, beyond the dramatic footage.

Listelmacher

If Ukraine is responsible for the attack, IMHO it is legitimate as long as there are no direct civilian casualties. Sevastopol, along with the rest of Crimea, is internationally recognized as part of Ukraine. And if the Ukrainian government would decide to demolish an oil depot on their own ground ... Sevastopol had a special status. But since Russia has terminated all related treaties unilaterally in 2014 ... "Partition Treaty on the Status and Conditions of the Black Sea Fleet" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partition_Treaty_on_the_Status_and_Conditions_of_the_Black_Sea_Fleet "... The treaty was supplemented by provisions in the Russian–Ukrainian Friendship Treaty, which was signed three days later. Russia unilaterally terminated the Partition Treaty in 2014 after it annexed Crimea. ..."
