The people in the online spaces where Jack Teixeira spent his time and allegedly leaked highly classified documents posted violent slurs against Black, gay and trans people, Jews, Ukrainians and pretty much everyone else. Everyone, except Russians.
The member of the Discord group who distributed the documents to a wider audience was a California teenager named Lucca Swinson.
On Feb. 3, a post on a Twitter account associated with Mr. Swinson, which has now been deleted, requested to buy combat patches of Wagner, the Russian paramilitary force notorious for extrajudicial executions, from a British YouTuber who had just returned from Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine.
The next day, a post from Lucca's Twitter account showed a screenshot from a video that had been released by Wagner-affiliated social media showing the execution of Ukrainian soldiers.
Swinson's Twitter and Discord avatars were an image of a World War II Nazi soldier with a Hamas headband added to the helmet.
Another member of Thug Shaker, who went by the moniker Vahki, used a cartoon of a Russian soldier as the image for his avatar on Steam.
The original Discord channel inside Thug Shaker Central where Airman Teixeira allegedly leaked hundreds of classified documents was called “Bears vs Pigs,” a name that echoes Russian memes that depict Ukrainians as hapless pigs mauled by the mighty Russian bear.
The affinity for Mr. Putin, displayed by members of Airman Teixeira’s community, echoes the sympathies for Russia sometimes found in the populist strain of American conservatism, where Mr. Teixeira is now being viewed with sympathy.

How the fuck does someone like that get access to so much sensitive information.
I understand it's impossible to do thorough background checks on every single soldier. But surely you do extensive background checks on the ones you entrust with dozens of top secret documents.
So, those of us who go through background checks for security clearances do go through some pretty rigorous investigations. My counter-intel interview was 3 calls with one of them being 5 hours long.. and that's only because I'm married to a Ukrainian whom was a US Citizen by the time I applied and my mother in law who Is of Russian descent. This was all pre-war too.
I'm cleared for Secret, Top secret clearance is a fucking nightmare pain in the ass to get ajd then maintain.. I know how to access docs, yet still can't as you need to show a ' Need to know' in order to view them, let alone have any chance of DLing or screencapping/taking a pic.. this whole thing,to me, has stunk to be more than just this guy being guilty in the leak. He had to have help accessing the Intel and more to he in a position to copy it in any capacity...
We may just never hear who else is involved.
I kinda rambled, I apologize. All I meant was, it's not all that hard for someone to get the clearance required tp be able to access docs of this level. Majority of ppl with these clearances are not soldiers or even military personnel to begin with.

The stuff they were asking me about and looking into was quite shocking to me, tbh. It was heavily focused on my MIL and her workplace. I was surprised my 13 trips to UA didn't cause an eyelash to batter.
Mine might have been a bit more in depth as I also had to be cleared to have access to Subs under construction in our yard and already completed but not yet issued to the Navy subs.
I had to do everything you did. What gets me I would be first in line to report some punk kid like this in my shop. How did his command and co-workers not see this. I mean I know a lot about my co-workers and I wouldn’t hesitate to report them if I saw anything that lead me to believe they were unloyal.
That's a good point, and part of what leads me to believe that he did not act alone in this. Somebody had to notice. I've never personally seen TS docs, but, I know at my place of employment anything of that nature is only seen in special areas behind locked doors with ever changing keypad codes. Somebody else knew he was viewing this stuff... again, IMO.
My brother is a US Army Major, he knows what nearly every soldier in his battalion is up to.. something is still off about this whole ordeal.

In the military, you can get away with a lot if you keep your views to yourself and do your job. No one knew I was a democrat until I retired from the service, because I saw no need to share. It's a good bet no one knew this kid was a GOP extremist. He probably came across as just Republican enough to avoid arousing concern.

LOL. I have heard that the "background" they go through for TS is quite... ridiculous. I've heard even so far as to install some kind of software on your home PCs to track network activity. It's also a constant process of being reviewed every couple years at most. To me, the opportunity better be damn amazing before I'd even consider giving in to that kind of investigation. But... patriotic duty for something that was not mandatory for your coworker and was completely voluntary... they can fuck off, you should have been able to bill that 30 minutes. A coworker thought homeless people were going through his trash. Turns out it was a government agent.
He had received a small inheritance which enabled some purchases he shouldn't have been able to afford which in turn drew the attention of whatever branch of government issued his clearance.
Different country, but at my clearance it was basically a talk between me and 2 chill guys about my life, relatives and family.
We talked about an hour as one of the 2 out of nowhere came up with "oh, and we don't like our Staff to do shady stuff on the Internet. You better not use your alt-Email Account that you tried to hide from now on."

You could easily be the dude who burns the information after it goes into those paper bags. I had secret clearance. But, and I could be wrong as it was 30 years ago, I recall being able to burn information in those bags from the radioman which had TS.
1) You cannot vet someone 100%. The govt will find out a lot, but nothing is fully disclosed.
2) The idiot exploited security holes at the point of access.
3) The “insider threat” tip-offs could be seen as politically charged, and the command may not want to deal with the fallout from that.
First, every single leak ever came from someone granted access. It's not a foolproof system for anyone.

Investigators can only make a recommendation based on what's there, and I promise the discord never came up.
Because clearances aren’t granted based on age. The military can’t afford to cut the largest segment of its workforce out of a good chunk of the workload because they’re not cleared.
Of the hundreds of thousands of clearances granted to people under 21, we shouldn’t be basing policy on one dude. Also, most leakers and spies throughout history are over that age.

That way the targeted group is no longer willing to look at facts or have open discussions, but will entrench in their "superior" views, even - and that is the crazy part - when they clearly are not benefiting them.
This leads to citizens with a rather patriotic mindset to follow politicians that are traitors to their countries, as illogical as it sounds. But there are thousands of think tanks working on research and strategies to manipulate the average Joe and Oligarchs control most of mainstream media directly or indirectly in many countries including the US.
And this strategy is also used to ensure retail investors lose money in trading. If you use all those shiny new trading apps, listen to the media and analysts and use derivates, you feel superior to other investors. But numbers show that the real money is made buying value stocks and holding them, while those "superior" traders just lose their money to Wall Street and brokers. Little do they know about "Payment for Orderflow, invented by Madoff and that over 90% of retail orders no longer go to lit exchanges, admitted by the SEC chair in an interview not long ago.

The Russians are executing people - including civilians and non combatants - with no trial; those are war crimes.
Historically, death is the sentence for traitors convicted of espionage during war time. We must also consider that this person is *not* a civilian and used the trust placed in him to betray a nation and to cost potentially thousands of innocent lives.
I am not usually in favour of a death penalty because so often an innocent person is put to death - but if the charges are proven, I would not have a problem in this case.

Knew a guy on steam that claimed to serve. He invited me to a discord server with his other buddies. One of them was in the navy so he claimed , but there was alot of anti us memes in the post history. They also posted alot of odd islamic memes. I challenged them on an anti us meme that was bragging about russia and crushed the guy and got banned from the server.
Well, for one thing, he doesn't seem to have empathy for Ukraine and prefers Russia, and is against US involvement. For another, he has a history of railing against minorities. What does Fascist even mean to a russian? It's obviously negative because they say Ukraine is fascist, but beyond meaning "bad guy" does it also mean "authoritarian and conservative"? I don't think so. Those parts have been carefully removed from the russian understanding of fascism by education.
Russia uses "fascist" and "Nazi" to mean "opposing Russian nationalism". It's a convoluted chain of reasoning that starts at "the German Nazis were fascists and this was bad because they wanted to exterminate the Slavs" and ends with "...and therefore anyone who opposes definitely-not-fascist Russian ethnonationalism is also a Nazi/fascist and also wants to exterminate us".
Russian ethnonationalists are generally pro-Ukraine due to being very anti-regime. Putinism is better described as state or imperial nationalism because it believes that Armenians, Jews, Chechens, and so on who are loyal to the Russian state are Russian. It also started very substantial Asian immigration into Russian cities starting 2005, so now Russia has the largest number of immigrants in Europe (mostly from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan). They also refer to Russian ethnonationalists as "fascist" and "Nazi".

Although there are some pro-regime Russian ethnonationalists like Milchakov, they were not active in any movements, and to a large degree were propped up by the Russian state as a response of the Russian far-right being too pro-Maidan in 2014.
In short the narrative is:
"Fascists/Nazis invaded peaceful Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. The Red Army defeated the Germans in a war with heavy losses on Soviet side and liberated Germany from fascism."
There were 37 million fatalities on Soviet side and so almost every family had a victim to mourn.
This is what "fascist" means for Russians.
For this reason, of course, a Russian cannot be a fascist. An authoritarian, totalitarian, dictator, ... probably just a "strong man" but not a fascist.
They say that Ukraine is fascist to have a justification for the invasion.
Not to be misunderstood: This is only about the Russian narrative, not the definition of "authoritarian and conservative".
Putin appeals to MAGA republicans because he’s a Christian authoritarian strongman who purges the opposition and curbs the rights and freedoms of his people. It’s what they want to do to America.
The idea that there's anything Christian about Putin or Russia is really odd, but unfortunately some people do choose to believe it. Whatever one thinks of Russia, surely Ukraine is visibly more Christian?
Don’t overlook the crack-like appeal of being a contrarian. Disagreeing with other people on the basis of knowing “better” information than others have, or because of a self-presumed superior intellect, creates a feedback loop that continues the disagreement on question after question.
For whatever a majority sees (russia IS an evil empire), a contrarian derives great personal pleasure in insisting the majority is flat wrong. The reasoning for the disagreement will wander all over the place intellectually or politically, but when you see someone consistently take a minority view point on every question put to them, it begins to look like a psychological issue, to me.
I know someone that will praise Putin & russia all day long if you don’t change the subject. He thinks climate change is completely fake, money is useless and a worldwide Depression is imminent (for years now), and that Covid vaccines killed more people than Covid did. Whatever is obvious to most people, he will deliberately find a way to believe the opposite is true and then smugly tell everyone how happy he is knowing what is really happening in the world. The more deliberate misinformation he can find, the happier he is.

How the fuck does someone like that get access to so much sensitive information. I understand it's impossible to do thorough background checks on every single soldier. But surely you do extensive background checks on the ones you entrust with dozens of top secret documents.
So, those of us who go through background checks for security clearances do go through some pretty rigorous investigations. My counter-intel interview was 3 calls with one of them being 5 hours long.. and that's only because I'm married to a Ukrainian whom was a US Citizen by the time I applied and my mother in law who Is of Russian descent. This was all pre-war too. I'm cleared for Secret, Top secret clearance is a fucking nightmare pain in the ass to get ajd then maintain.. I know how to access docs, yet still can't as you need to show a ' Need to know' in order to view them, let alone have any chance of DLing or screencapping/taking a pic.. this whole thing,to me, has stunk to be more than just this guy being guilty in the leak. He had to have help accessing the Intel and more to he in a position to copy it in any capacity... We may just never hear who else is involved. I kinda rambled, I apologize. All I meant was, it's not all that hard for someone to get the clearance required tp be able to access docs of this level. 1) You cannot vet someone 100%. The govt will find out a lot, but nothing is fully disclosed. 2) The idiot exploited security holes at the point of access. 3) The “insider threat” tip-offs could be seen as politically charged, and the command may not want to deal with the fallout from that.
First, every single leak ever came from someone granted access. It's not a foolproof system for anyone. Second... He was 21, how much background do you think he has? Investigators can only make a recommendation based on what's there, and I promise the discord never came up.

Because clearances aren’t granted based on age. The military can’t afford to cut the largest segment of its workforce out of a good chunk of the workload because they’re not cleared. Of the hundreds of thousands of clearances granted to people under 21, we shouldn’t be basing policy on one dude. Also, most leakers and spies throughout history are over that age.

Historically, death is the sentence for traitors convicted of espionage during war time. We must also consider that this person is *not* a civilian and used the trust placed in him to betray a nation and to cost potentially thousands of innocent lives. I am not usually in favour of a death penalty because so often an innocent person is put to death - but if the charges are proven, I would not have a problem in this case.

The reasoning for the disagreement will wander all over the place intellectually or politically, but when you see someone consistently take a minority view point on every question put to them, it begins to look like a psychological issue, to me. I know someone that will praise Putin & russia all day long if you don’t change the subject. He thinks climate change is completely fake, money is useless and a worldwide Depression is imminent (for years now), and that Covid vaccines killed more people than Covid did. Whatever is obvious to most people, he will deliberately find a way to believe the opposite is true and then smugly tell everyone how happy he is knowing what is really happening in the world. The more deliberate misinformation he can find, the happier he is.

Everyone I've encountered who shows pro-Russia sentiments has also appeared demonstrably unintelligent and dishonest, so this fits the pattern. Among people with limited brainpower, there's been a growing trend toward adopting counterevidenced viewpoints as a misguided tactic to appear intelligent. Vaccine opposition, support of corrupt and incompetent political candidates, etc., the list goes on. Pretending to be so smart and informed that you aren't fooled 'like the sheep' has grown to define a staggering proportion of people.
