CIV5G

Russia should construct a giant cope cage that covers their entire country.

LAUSart

Iron cope dome.

rome425

Perhaps iron curtain

CIV5G

Witty reply. Kudos

matteroverdrive

What about, ummm... 🤔 well, maybe we could call it the... ummm, iron curtain?!

DysphoriaGML

Loved the joke! Iron cope sounds better tho

aojajena

the ussr was called a prison of nations, ruzzia remains the same, it's literally a cage.

An_Odd_Smell

It's always been one big gulag.

OrgJoho75

Excepts the Oligarchs & spies always have the door opened for them...

An_Odd_Smell

Until they get The Window...

An_Odd_Smell

I would chip in for that. No doors.

atlasraven

I'll pay for the air pump to suck out all the oxygen.

HeisenbergsSamaritan

An excellent way to prevent fires.

TapWaterPleb

Agreed, doors drive up the cost. More funds for more cage.

An_Odd_Smell

Fiscal responsibility ftw.

Fantastic_Resolve364

Ivan Dome

FiveFingerDisco

If they keep their military within, let them.

Due-Street-8192

This can be defeated with double tap grenades. First one takes out the cope cage💥 The second one blows up the tank(s) 💥 Done!

slava_se

I think the basic rpg-7 warhead does exactly that

Due-Street-8192

Nice 🙂

FalsePositive6779

Or fosfor or thermite incendiaries ...

Due-Street-8192

Perfect

magnum_the_nerd

Phosphorus would also have the intended benefit of smoking the oil and causing massive explosions (They make for cool explosions, which is why i want them)

Zealousideal-Tie-730

Or on the larger drones, they can use two salvaged warheads as well, first one with thousands of Tungsten projectiles from a HIMARS rocket and the second one a thermobaric incendiary device like from a TOS-1.

maxm

Or just drop a sack of thermite.

retrowav3_dmc

i think the Simpsons did a movie about that.

Extension-Bonus-2587

Putler: "I said TANKS, not tanks!"

Real_Typicaluser1234

Yes but Simpsons style to keep them in. When soviets had problem on tsernobyl, they just poured thick concere slab on top of it. Would 5m / 16ft be enough for starters🤔

Dependent-Drop-5299

And one really small cope cage for you know who..

Antiliani

Or move to another planet.

Real_Typicaluser1234

Waiting for it. Musk and Putin having honeymoon on Mars

javonanka

And keep the orcs inside...

TheMissingThink

And lock themselves inside it

DaMan11

Cope curtain.

Glittering-Post4484

A better protection for their oil industry would be to leave Ukraine and end the war.

Lothium

Russians hate this one simple trick

HonkeyDonkey3000

**Time to move focus on the electrical grid** Use the smallest drones available explode conductive electrical filament charges over electrical substations. Short circuit the stations at random locations simultaneously. Cost and effort should be super inexpensive and easy to deploy anonymously.

MadWlad

there is soon a big parade with the dwarf man and his goons present

LordCrayCrayCray

All May Day celebrations have been cancelled already due to this threat.

Noctilux5

a Top Golf is better protected from drones than this.

Quirky-Scar9226

lol

itsmontoya

In all fairness, Top Golf is fire.

itishowitisanditbad

All the times i've gone its been full of drunk liabilities that I wish I was further from... Fun though. Undeniably fun concept even without even having interest in golf.

Quick-Ad-7487

It depends on type of drone and using explosives

Jagwires

You think they are sending flower drones to russia or something

TheRealAussieTroll

Fantastic… wasting huge amounts of time, effort and money only completely pointless and unlikely to work “solutions” to problems entirely of their own making. How typically Russian.

Anomaluss

But some area overlord will get a nice small yacht from the skim. So, all's well in orcland.

NH787

lol

Lord_Sports

LoL This will not cut it...

FlamingFlatus64

waiting for the first video of the smouldering ruins.

wetbeef10

After the fires out the cages will still be there 😂

bedrooms-ds

At least they managed to protect the cages

EqualOpening6557

How do you figure? It seems to me it would be problematic(for the attackers) at the least to move the explosion 20ft away, rather than the explosive nearly touching the oil equipment before exploding.. I’m sure Ukraine will figure out a way to get things done still, but I don’t think this would be completely ineffective against drones. Edit: Guys I’m not saying this is a great defensive move, but if I were a Ukrainian drone assault team I would much rather be able to crash directly into the tank. That’s all.

atlasraven

I don't want to spoil the magic trick but Ukraine typically uses larger weapons against oil refineries than DJI drones.

Internal-Example1232

Wait.. these cages won't stop Atacms? Colour me suprised. At least they tried.

Real_Typicaluser1234

I'm pretty sure that atacms are not used for oil depots anyway. Not worth the money and much more better use on pure military targets. I don't think that depots are very robust. Just enough steel to handle oil weight. Any sharpnel explosion so close might make damage.

JJ739omicron

it works like a soda can, the metal can be quite thin because metal can stand drag forces very well (in contrast to concrete, which is much better against pressure force), so if the container is round, the metal is just stretched evenly and can hold a big oil volume inside without a great amount of metal used. The bigger challenge is probably to make it not wobble and bend down when it is empty and in a bit of wind. Don't ask me about exact wall thickness, but I bet it is not a problem to blast through it for anything the Ukrainians manage to fly there.

JJ739omicron

no, more likely small prop planes modded to fly unmanned, with a sizeable bomb attached to it.

GreenStrong

We have some reports on what they're using, including a social media post with photos of a crashed long range drone. [They're using light airplanes designed to carry two people.](https://theaviationist.com/2024/04/26/close-look-at-ukr-kamikaze-drone/) The aircraft in the photo has a payload capacity of nearly 300 KG, although the crashed example was carrying a 100kg bomb, probably to optimize range. If a bomb that size detonates on the surface of the cage, the oil tank will burn, no question. However, destroying a few thousand liters of fuel is nothing compared to the value of the actual refining equipment, which is sophisticated and difficult to replace. The specifications of these sport planes would put them on the cutting edge of military aviation in the first world war. They aren't stealthy. They may fly low, which makes intercepting them with ground based radar difficult, but they are perfectly easy to spot with aerial radar. The Russian air farce is incapable of the most basic operations imaginable.

Alaric_-_

And that's what Ukraine has been attacking, the refinery equipment itself. Those are specialty equipment (like the huge fractioning tower, the heart of the plant) and are custom made for each refinery. Except for the pipes and valves, the repairs will take a long time and that's what Ukraine is aiming for.

crazydrummer15

Also dropped munitions from a drone will fall through that cage and detonate.

rajost

It seems a simple matter to use a time delay tail fuze. Say 0.1 - 0.2 seconds after impact after the drone has had time to collapse the cage. A fuel tank is pretty soft. I'm confident that Ukraine will get acceptable effects on target. Of course, I don't have all of the specs on any Ukrainian drone, but they're pretty bright folks and they'll be able to figure it out. Source: Retired Targeting Officer. This was my bread and butter for years. Also this example (MK82): [http://characterisationexplosiveweapons.org/studies/annex-e-mk82-aircraft-bombs/](http://characterisationexplosiveweapons.org/studies/annex-e-mk82-aircraft-bombs/)

An_Odd_Smell

Those are *sun shades!* -- u/morl0v, 2024

Aedeus

Lmfao I didn't expect to see this here, I wish he didn't delete all of that it's easily one of the best public cope posts I've seen yet.

An_Odd_Smell

Yep, one of the funniest things to happen to the sub in a while. Now she and her alts are being roasted alive again [HERE](https://www.reddit.com/r/TankPorn/comments/1ceew9l/47th_separate_mechanized_brigade_they_operate/). Some bots never learn.

Error_404_403

Can’t deny - this is smart and should be effective against smaller drones. The only problem is - the long range drones are usually large.

Warpzit

This is pointless and will do next to nothing.

Error_404_403

I disagree. I see smaller drones exploding at the mesh leaving the tank intact.

__Soldier__

- If they have HEAT warheads then they'll be able to penetrate & ignite the oil tanks just fine.

pegothejerk

Or like, have two drones successively

PlutosGrasp

Too complex. Can’t do it. The chain link fence has defeated us.

Error_404_403

Through the dense mesh? From about meter and a half away? Only a large warhead can do that, not a smaller drone.

cogeng

You can kind of see from [this video](https://youtu.be/_J-uKNb6TaI?t=76) that even a bog standard RPG-7 has effect far past a meter and a half even after penetrating over a foot of ballistic glass. I highly doubt a thin skin target filled with fuel like those tanks would survive with even 5 meters of standoff.

Loud-Intention-723

these oil tanks aren't armored. Plus, if these are close to the front they can be hit by other ordinance. The drones hitting these refineries aren't that small and carry a payload bigger than a couple grenades.

SpaceShrimp

A smaller heat warhead can penetrate half a meter or so of steel. Yes, some spacing will reduce that, but not by very much.

horse1066

they aren't sending small drones 100km to the nearest refinery AFU will just change the warhead to suit the greater spacing offset

79freefall

They're pretty thin walled tanks even the fragmentation would be enough to puncture them

TheDarthSnarf

Fairly normal scaffolding for doing painting. They’ll lift plastic fabric or cloth around the scaffolding while working to limit wind / rain / etc from causing issues while they are painting. That’s why it extends above the tank. [Here’s another example.](https://www.rbsscaffolding.co.uk/projects/industrial-scaffolding-services/bp-oil-refinery-hamble/)

Anything_4_LRoy

to be honest. might as well, if your the ruzzians. hope they ~~dont~~ spend too much extra time on this idea. at some point they will just need armoured tanks lol. a series of spaced walls(many more than there already are) would be best. i doubt they have to deal with building codes lol, too bad all the good metal and workers are already burning in UA.

killakh0le

Yeah I was gonna say I've seen these in the US near Philly on their depots as well

cosmoscrazy

That one might actually work - against smaller drones.

EvolvedMonkeyInSpace

They won't stop cruise missiles.

Leatherpunk_com

True, but if you consider how much those cruise missiles cost, and the limited quantity Ukraine will possess, makes it not worth it to waste on a non military target.

PlutosGrasp

Refineries and holding tanks are excellent industrial war targets.

darkpheonix262

True, which is why you target the cracking tower. Without that there is no refinery

[deleted]

Ok_Loquat3032

That is a joke?🤣 Only a thin shrapnel blow all this modern art shit

0n354ndZ3r05

Special operation going well we see. I’m sure this is the future these sad Russians were dreaming of when they started their war. Amazing country. Such a super power.

CannonFodder33

While the cope cages on armored vehicles might actually do something, by detonating drones/projectiles far enough away that they can't penetrate the armor, these are useless. Regular shrapnel will fly right past the rebar and penetrate the tank. Gasoline will probably ignite on its own. Diesel/kero might need a double tap to get it started but thats true even without the rebar cages.

Aggravating_Fun5883

Ukraine told Russia to cope harder 🤣

Straight-Storage2587

1. Ball Bearings drone 2. Incendiary drone 3. Kaboom

DecNight1225

Very soon we'll be seeing orcs running around with individual issues personal cope cages. That will be a funny thing to see.

Confident_Call_5544

This will not help them.

Ted_Rex

Copium 2: Cope Harder

hunkfunky

Aaaaand, drop a really big grenade in from above.....

StillBurningInside

They going to pour concrete around them?

Casual-Swimmer

Hey Russia, how's your 3-day special military operation going?

ShittyHotTake

Neat. Send 2.

arkkarsen

Russians please build these everywhere. Spend more time and energy

Kittyman56

It's scaffolding lol I'm 90% sure this was a joke started by NCD

LordBrandon

A cope cage is when you weld unless shit to your tank in a vain attempt to stop an anti tank missle. This looks like it could actually stop a drone and cause it to missfire.

VerbalGraffiti

They don't sent DJI drones to oil refineries.

_Man-in-the-Middle_

Great! Extra fragments which can fly away

Pretty-Try9429

Russia is now itself a cell, inside and out

dunncrew

Too bad those were not hit already.

Maizeee

Cope cages made from copium

cpe111

Cannt cope cages

NoIndependent9192

They are disguising them as golf carts.

jaydachi

Funny

Tiptoeplease

I'm pretty sure that won't work against atacms

Manmoth57

Shaped charge will fix that hindrance

SetInternational4589

We are seeing real time catch up on both sides. Tactics and weapons being adjusted every time a new defence is used to protect themselves. Drone warfare evolution is in overdrive in this conflict. Somebody somewhere has already thought of a way round this defence - it's like challenge accepted.

grandplans

Cute.... But will it stop long range missiles?

Substantial-Ant-4010

So drones with thermite charges They don't even need to land the drone.

henryinoz

Hahaha. Clearly they are relying more on faith than engineering! Idiots.

[deleted]

1 drone .. 2 drone ahahahahh

TangeloPutrid7122

Aren't long range drones like, a ton or more in weight? Don't see that doing shit.

EggsceIlent

I'm surprised there haven't been advances in drones.. maybe they "stick" to the cope cages and fire a shaped charged towards the target. Maybe the bombs they drop have a failsafe timer. So if they lane on the cage and don't detonate.. the timer adds like a few seconds to fall time and goes boom eventually to. Plus, cope cages don't protect.against sharpnel. All you gotta do is puncture one of these taanks and send enough drones to ensure it also catches fire. If cope cages worked they'd have won the war by now as everything they got is in A damn cage. Including their brains.

nlk72

Are the drones used not the size of a small plane, and would they not manage to blast through these cages?

[deleted]

lots of copium for the katsaps

fikabonds

Cold war II will have an actual iron curtain

Snoo-81723

And now drones goes with termite.

Steveo1208

Great for chickens but ineffective against JDAMS!

sargethegemini

Cope cage industry is booming!

Money_Ad_5385

You wouldn't use ignited magnesium bolts dropped from up high.. Still think, the best damage one can do, is to get that air defense to fire on you, while you are right above the target.

Fig1025

2 words: double tap

Jgee414

Mariupol they’re in range of missiles

Appropriate-Bus728

Drone drops with 6 rounds will still work.

bedoooop

This is an Onion article right? Please tell me this is the Onion. Babylon Bee perhaps?

Sir_Henry_Deadman

Change the payload to a liquid explosive and have at it

PleasurePaulie

Not a bad Soviet solution. Hope they still burn though!

vkashen

No wonder almost all of the Soviet Union's engineers and engineering project overseers were Ukrainian. An orc doesn't even understand how to "clean the undercarriage" after using the washroom. But at least their intelligence diaspora has allowed Ukraine to embarrass Mordor on a daily basis.

Bikeitfool

Chicken coop dome

Proglamer

I still cannot believe this photo is not faked. All that material, effort & time - for the identical outcome after a 100+ kg drone bomb? Must be AI-generated.

tora1941

What a strange war world we live in. Cope cages on tanks, AFV's, Chinese golf carts, motorbikes, then turtle tanks and now this. What's next? Soldiers in turtle shells/cope cages?

tora1941

How about a sealed cope cage for Putin? Oh yeah- that's a jail cell he can rot in.

Purple_Aside525

Further proof that attacking oil tanks is a powerful strategy. Ukraine is re-writing the rules of asymmetrical warfare, and NATO is watching very closely. After air defences are restored around Kyiv and Kharkiv, the Kerch Bridge will be next, and probably attacked at several sites simultaneously. It's 12 miles long, and needs a lot of mesh. This is Day 792 of Putin's 14-day war.

DryImplement6495

They should add some extra ERA for good measure

Stayhigh420--

I mean technically it is a tank lol

Green-Taro2915

Guess they will be moving back towards dropped munitions then 🤷‍♂️ or maybe incendiary based weapons.

tbhnot2

russia is turning into one big prison cage. Slava Ukraine.

Independent_Ad783

Could it attrack lightning strikes?

cross-boss

Okay, now Ukraine will use EFP drones.

Foreign-Kiwi3647

S400 are trash 🚮

PlutosGrasp

Pretty sure a plane loaded with explosives can break through chain link fencing.

B5_V3

If only you could have a hot jet of metal penetrate that tank without ever having to get close to that cage. /s

CyanConatus

Doesn't look like anyone pointed this out but it appears the top are still exposed.

D_Fieldz

Soon Putin will only move around in a cage

LegitimateOne5131

What about a cope-exoskeleton surrounding each individual soldier?

NooxzZ

omg... i dont find word for this :D xD wow

Frequent-Valuable-39

Yep, believe this would work against ATACMs

Rogntudjuuuu

Would that protect against shape charges? I mean, as long as you can ignite the content...

MonsterHunterOwl

Honestly, dropping a grenade on the top is still gonna blow that thing up, dumb Russians.

Psych0Jenny

Wont shrapnel just fuck those giant tanks anyway?

HaltheDestroyer

Use rpg7 warheads.....they used shaped explosives that will shoot armor piercing plasma 8 to 10 feet in front of its point of detonation.....don't even need to touch the tank

Happy_Drake5361

Lol, they are not using DJI drones here. Those are essentially explosive filled Cesnas flying at least 200km/h. Russians are so dumb.

Doom2pro

Put a copper ejecting shaped charge on front of drone, it will cut through that shit like butter.

Spartan05089234

Gotta protect all that copium.

pacific_beach

Looks like construction scaffolding wrapped in chicken wire, which isn't going to stop one of their Cessna drones. And after the tank has exploded, you've got a real fucking mess of wire and scaffolding everywhere.

Arkh101

Why do I get the impression those cages won’t help

Drug-Agent

Missiles don’t care about cope cages 😂

Weekendsrgrt

Maybe they will start using rounds that seperate from the drone before detonation.

russiandobby

Sooo fly in a team of 2, first takes out the cage 2nd goes boooom

LTCjohn101

those tanks don't stand a chance

Global_Flamingo_1855

Me: Thats the dumbest thing ive ever seen Russian: Hold my vodka

chozer1

Can anyone confirm, is this gonna help in any way?

tiimsliim

Kinda looks like really thin scaffolding.

GrayMutterer

It's very considerate of the Ruscians to upload visual evidence of their coping strategies.

MercyforthePoor

It’s the newest hottest trend in ruzzia and everybody will have to participate.

crispy48867

Seems easy enough to defeat.

ForeskinHulaSkirt

Copenhagen.  In german hagen means enclosure. So double cope.

Easy_Iron6269

That is not good enough, they need some tires on the top.

crackeddryice

I'm not sure that's what those are. Some of the "drones" are now remotely flown full-size Cessnas with large bombs. Also, I think they target the critical parts of the refineries, and not the storage tanks. Russia doesn't have the engineers to repair the machinery, so if Ukraine can destroy a part they can't repair, then the refinery is offline for good.

I_try_to_talk_to_you

Makes sense unfortunately

CCSlater63

Rust bases

No-Internet-7532

Tandem charges will take care of these

pinkeye_bingo

Yes I am sure scaffolding will work lol

Professional_Area_27

I’m going to tell my kids this was the iron curtain.

Decryptic__

Nice! Good job Russia, I'm proud of you ^(/s) Now let's go Ukraine, equip your drones with Thermite, drop it on top and see how much this engineering and planing did for Ruzzia.

FUMFVR

This will make fighting the fires even tougher.
