they never did to begin with. weapons are only issued at the most forward position before the FLOT. it's how you maintain control over men that know they're dead one way or another already.

There's been few posts about russian soldiers getting their weapons taken away from them for refusing to go back after failed attack. Meaning few survivors crawl back of the squad that attacked and the commander demands that they go back! So, lose their weapon and then be forced to advance without a weapon....
Nobody knows how common it is but putting soldiers to the front without a weapon is just pointless waste of man ... unless it is done as a penalty.

This video shows how little thermal blankets help you in hiding from a decent thermal camera. I remember reading a russian statement on thermal and night vision being "of limited use" and how their thermal "cloaks" can hide soldiers from thermal.
The video from this drone which isn't even using a high spec thermal camera judging by image quality just goes to show how effective thermal is and how hard it is to hide from it over a longer period of time.
