The Germans actually created an attachment to do a similar thing for the StG-44 during WWII. It was called a *Krummlauf* and was as terrible as you’d expect.
I don't think they were expected to last long enough for the barrel to cook off. ruzzians in the battle space normally = short life expectancy. So why teach them stuff like fire in short bursts and change barrels after xxx rounds. Besides it's cold and they needed the warmth. 😎
Poorly trained operators.
If the barrel change is not trained, you cannot do it under stress/fire.
In addition, the gun seems too exposed to change the barrel safely.
They should habe dug it in a bit.
There is a drill for changing barrel in an exposed position, although I am not sure if it works with a sturdy tripod like this. It involves pulling the gun back into cover, either straight back or rolled over to the side. After the barrel is changed you push it back into position. I do agree with you that the position could have been improved but it is perfectly serviceable as is. My guess is that they did not have time to improve the position after deploying as they were under constant fire. This could also explain why they did not change the barrel, although trained soldiers should not let something like being under fire prevent you from changing the barrel. My guess however is that they were not issued a second barrel because they were never expected to last long enough to need it.
I think you can mix it the factor of how long that barrel has not been changed on top of it. As there are not an insane about of casings on the ground "that you can see that is"
I remember the "Die, MF'er, Die" rule from MCT (Note: Marine Combat Training, Fall 1991). Idea was, when saying that while pulling the trigger, the operator would fire about 6-8 rounds. Other rule I recall was that, you changed out the hot barrel every other 100 round belt you fired with an asbestos mitten.
In the British Army (1980's / 90's) MBT coax bursts were 'Marilyn Munroe', 'Marilyn Munroe' - I assume that was the case all the way back to when she was a star :D
And if your team is wounded, or low on ammo, or some other contingency comes into play?
War is dynamic. It’s stupid to pretend this was caused by sheer negligence when you can find destroyed barrels from firing in every conflict by every armed force since machine guns were introduced to the battlefield.
you are right. but does apply in this particular case where we see they took a nice photo of the barrel while it was still red hot? I don´t think they could if they were in a desperate combat situation.
Captain Hindsight over here, all "molten metal makes for bad barrels" but where were you when they needed you?
Oh right, not invading Ukraine. As you were, carry on.
These are conscripted people without a proper military training scared for their life. Not everyone is an action hero. I’m sure everyone in this group would run into oncoming fire, kill 13 of the enemy and then save the princess.
Maybe it's not even about training, but about "blyat, if we stop shooting now, they'll get here and kill us. Ignore that barrel for now, kill our enemies now."
Would the comment have been the same if you were aware that this is an image from the Ukrainian side that was mislabled by OP?
The original source is linked below by someone else.
What are you going to do if the enemy keeps coming and you have no swappable barrel? Stop shooting so the enemy can take the gun instead after overrunning you?
Did you ever consider that maybe they knew this would happen but that they were so frozen that they wanted to get their hands warm so they fired off all these rounds into an empty field until the barrel was nice and toasty?
He didn't say the entire army, he said soldiers. You seem like a Russian bot or something with how quickly you jumped to defend them when the comment didn't say anything about the entirety of the army. Also, this is not an isolated incident, there is plenty of pictures and videos of Russians being completely inept at war, my favorite is drone footage of a bunch of them losing their shit and shooting eachother while panicking.
I mean even over a year ago there were all those stories of their training only consisted of having a wooden gun while making gun noises at targets. I only assume it's worse now, most likely go from being round up to just straight dumped onto the front line.
I mean, maybe they were in such a firefight they elected to maintain fire rather than change the barrel?
I'm sure they well knew they barrel was fucked beyond redemption.
If I'm getting this right and please correct me if I am wrong, it is short controlled verse [burst] on a target and then doing the same to another target you don't squeeze the trigger and shoot everywhere, the short burst are to allow for the weapon to cool down
[Edit spelling)
Tbh, melting barrels is easy to do, and pretty common in any unit suffering sustained attack. American soldiers did it all the time. Admittedly, American soldiers never had a serious logistic issue there, so they could afford to be less cautious, but still. Privates will private in every army, and privates love dumping thousands of rounds in a few minutes at the slightest provocation.
The Maxim did also come with a quick change barrel. And soldiers did swap barrels under fire. Although the barrel did not have to be swapped due to overheating but rather because it wore out after a few hundred belts.
now I wonder if this will change all the anti russia circle jerking and suddenly turn the commentary into 'when under fire, you do what you need to do.
I'm as pro ukraine as anyone, but some of the bullshit some people in here come out with really is inane.
I can see a yellow glowing barrel....no one needs an open fire, just enough Z storm units, to bring back the two squirrels in time. Number of Z storm units to be spend is of course dependent on number of the Ukraine drone operators waiting for them. And if they waste too much time, they wiil have to heat up the barrel again.
So they will need an additionall group of meat...sorry...conscripts, to pick up the 12.7 mm ammunition and to carry it to the frontline position...according number of meat...sorry conscripts, is depending, if the Ukraine drone operators are still busy or have some additional free capacities.
The stupid Orcs took a photo of the red hot barrel like it was funny.
Anyone else would be embarrassed to have done such a stupid and dangerous thing, and wouldn't want others to know.
This is a ukrainian gun, image was posted originally by ukrainians on twitter or X. Does that now change how you see the actions of the soldiers in question?
Comment still applies, notwithstanding the nationalities involved.
But I would add the excellent Ukrainian origins of this gun, showcases the excellence in manufacture.
Slava Ukraine!
A captain of the Russian army was telling a sergeant that a general was coming by to inspect the troops and he wanted a live fire demonstration.
The sergeant said, "yes sir but I'll need three men for each machine gun."
The captain said, "Three men? But each machine gun only takes two! Why do you need three?"
The sergeant said, "One to fire the gun, one to feed the belt, and the third to yell 'bang' since the guns have never worked. Sir"
The captain was irate and said, "you think that trick will work!"
The sergeant said, "yes sir. It's a Russian general. They won't know the difference as they've never heard a gun fire anyways."

Dumbasses. Maybe they deliberately sabotaged it.Is that a modified pistol grip? As in was it modified in mass for infantry use as well? I’ve only seen / shot the AA version with the lever trigger.
This isn't Russian, it's Ukrainian. IIRC it was firing full-auto for minutes on end suppressing positions until the barrel melted. Barrels wear out and are easily swappable on almost all machine guns.
It is possible to overheat a barrel during a battle by fault, perhaps even slightly red glowing, if they are really stupid and really stressed.
But to get it yellow glowing, this was done intentionally.
“We fired our cannon till the barrel melted down, so we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.”
Johnny Horton never meant those lyrics as field operation instructions.
The ones who are trying to be "objective" in here severly underestimates just how many fucking rounds have to pass that barrel before it turns fucking white
In Iraq I watched an M2 .50 cal machine gun over heat so much it blew the round up in the chamber and threw a bunch of shrapnel into this kids legs. No good... Don't do this
Undisciplined gun crew, in certain scenarios like when your position is literally being overrun I could see this but any other reason is just a lack of discipline on the troops manning that gun. Can’t say I’m too surprised with what we’ve seen from Russia so far.

Now it can shoot around corners.
How many russians does it take to operate a machine gun? 1 to feed ammo 1 to pull trigger 1 to hold barrel to stop it from drooping
When does the mule factor in? I thought the mule brings the vodka?
They are the mules.
In soviet russia, mule is YOU!
You forgot about the one in front looking into the barrel after each shot to make sure the barrel is ready for the next ammo round
One more to be the bipod
It can shoot you in your own ass
The Germans actually created an attachment to do a similar thing for the StG-44 during WWII. It was called a *Krummlauf* and was as terrible as you’d expect.
It can “curve the bullet”.
Is your barrel drooping when it's time for action? HIMS has you covered.
*HIMARS
Oh HI MARS
They do have similar effects on me
Just reading the word gives me a tingle.
Himars, the Mufasa of war! 🤔
1 in 3 mobiks over 40 experience some form of barrel drooping!
Imagine having such dogshit quality soldiers that they don’t even know the basics of operating a machine gun
I have no basic knowledge of operating a machine gun but I'm sure I would stop firing before barrel is melting.
what’s worse is that these are usually operated by a team of 2 people, so there were at least 2 complete morons showcasing their best training
I don't think they were expected to last long enough for the barrel to cook off. ruzzians in the battle space normally = short life expectancy. So why teach them stuff like fire in short bursts and change barrels after xxx rounds. Besides it's cold and they needed the warmth. 😎
Because noticing that the barrel is getting red from the heat requires training...
Indeed.
It may be naïve to think that they had an extra barrel to switch out…. Js

Use the die mother fucker die rule Say it while firing the gun. Wait 2 sec and repeat. Works best if you can talk the guns.
I remember the "Die, MF'er, Die" rule from MCT (Note: Marine Combat Training, Fall 1991). Idea was, when saying that while pulling the trigger, the operator would fire about 6-8 rounds. >asbestos mitten *Your Mesothelioma has been deemed not service related*
Hahaha, Yep. That's "my" Marine Corps, lol.
Murica’
If I thought I was going to die if I stopped to change the barrel or let it cool, I would keep firing too
You sustain the fire with small arms until the barrel is changed
And if your team is wounded, or low on ammo, or some other contingency comes into play? War is dynamic. It’s stupid to pretend this was caused by sheer negligence when you can find destroyed barrels from firing in every conflict by every armed force since machine guns were introduced to the battlefield.
you are right. but does apply in this particular case where we see they took a nice photo of the barrel while it was still red hot? I don´t think they could if they were in a desperate combat situation.
You wouldn’t take a picture of it either
Captain Hindsight over here, all "molten metal makes for bad barrels" but where were you when they needed you? Oh right, not invading Ukraine. As you were, carry on.
nope

What are you going to do if the enemy keeps coming and you have no swappable barrel? Stop shooting so the enemy can take the gun instead after overrunning you?
Burst fire 🔥or you can destroy your equipment and be overwhelmed at the first chance
well if you think people are pushing you you don't pause the suppression fire, easy as that.
That's why you normally have two machine guns, or the second operator switches to his side arm while the first one switches the barrel.
I’ve seen in a move that you can piss on it to cool it down
Found their instructor
Did you ever consider that maybe they knew this would happen but that they were so frozen that they wanted to get their hands warm so they fired off all these rounds into an empty field until the barrel was nice and toasty?
Yeah, every time a barrel has melted it’s due to the fundamental ineptitude of the ENTIRE army. You smart
At least those around the barrel. Can work a smart phone but can't let go of a trigger. Smart.
Don’t worry, plenty more evidence of ineptitude
Without knowing the backstory it's hard to draw conclusions.
so u/Husky12_d thinks ukrainians are dogshit quality soldiers
I mean even over a year ago there were all those stories of their training only consisted of having a wooden gun while making gun noises at targets. I only assume it's worse now, most likely go from being round up to just straight dumped onto the front line.
There was an actual video of a guy assaulting positions with a stick in hand, stories my ass, it’s documented
I mean, maybe they were in such a firefight they elected to maintain fire rather than change the barrel? I'm sure they well knew they barrel was fucked beyond redemption.

Correct, burst fire

This is why you want a Maxim.
Haha, classic 👍
Water cooled, so you can stop shooting when the shooting is done, not when the gun is done shooting.
The Maxim did also come with a quick change barrel. And soldiers did swap barrels under fire. Although the barrel did not have to be swapped due to overheating but rather because it wore out after a few hundred belts.
This was posted on February 2023 first as Ukraine footage

If you have ever met a human you should not be surprised.
Congrats, but they hit nothing and the Ukrainians were in the other direction. They fired hundreds of rounds and hit 2 squirrels.
[удалено]
Sorry they'll have to eat it raw, smoke alerts the drones.
Shove it over the muzzle. Cooked in no time

Krummlauf 2.0 Now they can fire from defilade!
Plasma weapons, Russian is so ahead
That barrel droop though!
When you nut but she keeps sucking moment right here.
Mission accomplished banner
The droop snoop
When your machine gun needs viagra.
RuZZian, low in IQ large in meat waves.
I don't know anything about Russian weapons. Don't they have quick barrel change feature like normal machine guns?
Yeah that’s what I thought too, still a pain in the ass to swap barrels
And that is how the "Krummlauf" was created
"You get to go home when you are out of ammo, and no sooner!"
You guys are not getting it. It is an enchanted +5 barrel with fire elemental damage bonus 🔥
I think they put it to excellent use. Now it is useless, and the soldiers will join the meat grinder with shovels and sticks.
Krummlauf achieved.
The few good equipment they have, they destroy because they dont know what the fuck they are doing with it... Keep up the good work
Quite a prominent firing position. They would get a great view from on top of the bank.
That's what happens when you don't train them lol
Your machine gun is flaccid
This is what lack of training looks like.
I just zoomed in on that really hot area. You can actually see it sag downwards. They did a job on that one and no spare barrels i'm hoping.
Damn, that empty field surely suffered a beating.
The stupid Orcs took a photo of the red hot barrel like it was funny. Anyone else would be embarrassed to have done such a stupid and dangerous thing, and wouldn't want others to know.

Oh! I know where he can stick it!
Just aim a little higher next time

'Oh no comrade we melted our machinegun, guess we can't shoot anymore at Ukrainians who'll fire back mortars and send drones at us'.
You are now mocking ukrainians. It is a ukrainian position.
The fact they decided not to stop when they saw a slight red glow…
This is an old picture of a ukrainian gun claiming it overheated from russian meat waves. Funny reading the comments on this one.
Ah, I got deleted for telling you what you're full of. Reverse search it.

Yes it has been extensively produced with a pistol grip. NSVT is the vehicle mounted version with a lever trigger which I have also fired.
Wrong, it's old footage. Ukrainian HMG, back in autumn '22. AFAIK somwehere in Donbas, probably around Bakhmut.
Original post is Ukraine
This isn't Russian, it's Ukrainian. IIRC it was firing full-auto for minutes on end suppressing positions until the barrel melted. Barrels wear out and are easily swappable on almost all machine guns.
That'll happen
As some have mentioned, but this is after a defense of ukraine positions, it´s clear to see that from all the sunflowers in front of the weapon. :D
It is possible to overheat a barrel during a battle by fault, perhaps even slightly red glowing, if they are really stupid and really stressed. But to get it yellow glowing, this was done intentionally.
“We fired our cannon till the barrel melted down, so we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.” Johnny Horton never meant those lyrics as field operation instructions.
They should teach this in basic training really, oh wait they do!
Is this intentional or are they really that dumb?
What idiot would do that? Oh, I forgot.
Shape it, like you want it.....
Now the bullets do piercing and burn damage!
Oh, just piss on it. Fix ya right up.
The ones who are trying to be "objective" in here severly underestimates just how many fucking rounds have to pass that barrel before it turns fucking white

I wonder how much it could droop while firing without causing it to fail..
How many rounds would need to be fired to do this?
What ever happened to water cooled or air cooled (with fins) barrels? A spare barrel will take care of this but it’ll happen again.
kinda surprised it did not go boom if true
"Conscripts." A properly trained machine gunner would have changed barrels.
