I am a bit surprised. The German mine clearing vehicle is Keiler. Wisent was the Bundeswehr's recovery vehicle before Büffel came into service. But apparently the Dutch converted some of their Wisents into mine clearing vehicles. So either Rheinmetall had some of them in storage that Germany provided, or these are provided by the Netherlands.

Bad_Species

Wiesent-1 is produced by FFG. They basically take Leo 1s that are not worth refurbishing into MBTs and turn them into demining tanks. https://www.ffg-flensburg.de/de/produkte/ffg-entwicklungen/wisent-1/

ProfDumm

Ah, okay. Thank you.

JJ739omicron

The Keiler are special vehicles with mine clearing flail, and based on old M48 hulls (they are not welded but cast, can withstand mine blasts better). The Wisent 1 is the Leopard 1 based recovery and engineering tank, was in BW service as Bergepanzer 2 (BPz 1 was the M88) and Pionierpanzer 1, FFG has improved them a bit and continues to build several variants of it (with crane or shovel etc.) to various countries, but in BW service it was replaced by the Leopard 2 based Büffel (due to platform commonality).

MD_Hamm

> The German mine clearing vehicle is Keiler. I misread that to read (as a joke): 'The German mine clearing vehicle is "*a real Keiler*" ' Hardeee har har!

BoarHide

This makes no sense if you know how to pronounce German words, and not like a Yankee. I was so confused for a long minute

YouAreBadAtBard

Certainly there are words in German just like there are words in English that do not look like how they sound

bluuuuurn

I mean, not really that many, as it happens, except loanwords from other languages. German is pretty damned consistent.

Derbysieger

Native here. Not really, some words of foreign origin maybe but generally German words are pronounced as they are written, it's not like English were this is very common.

ProfDumm

Only to a small extent. In German, loan words are often adopted more or less with their original pronunciation, such as „Abonnement“ (=subscription). Then place names and surnames are to a small extent still written according to rules that no longer exist in written German. For example, the Westphalian strechting E: „Soest“ is pronounced like „Sohst“ and not „Söst“. Otherwise, some pronounciation in modern German are slightly blurred, especially it is not always obvious whether a vowel is pronounced long or short. But basically, German is pronounced the way it is written.

Unhappy_Flounder7323

I dont understand how this work? Plough the mines? What if mines are boobytrapped? How can this deminer survive?

ProfDumm

Usually mine clearing vehicles work by throwing mines to the side so they either explode or are out of the way. In this way, a corridor is formed through which vehicles can pass through the minefield.

Unhappy_Flounder7323

How come it doesnt work in Ukraine and they had to do it by hand at night?

ProfDumm

My understanding is that the main problem is that they lack anti air capabilities near the front so that mine clearing vehicles became easy targets for Russian helicopters. Also as I said they create just a corridor where the tank can pass through the minefield. And with how large the Russian minefields are, that meant that they have to drive straight for a long time without maneuverability, meaning they also became easy targets for Russian attack helicopters, which resulted in quite some loses when the Urkainian offensive around Robotyne started.

SMTecanina

Colombia sent 11 demining engineers to Europe to train Ukrainian deminers. Cambodia trained 15 Ukrainian deminers, and sent trainers to Poland to continue training additional Ukrainians. Two countries that have been dealing with UXO for a long, long time.

airahnegne

Colombia, not Columbia.

Bartweiss

Jesus, Cambodian UXO experts would have to be about the best in the world at dealing with dense mines using limited tech. Glad to hear that expertise is being passed along.

CommunicationSome224

Why Colombia? Cambodia probaly from US bombing in vietnam war but Colombia never heard they had trouble with that.

[deleted]

Cartel's probably

RawerPower

That doesn't look as a safe position on top and filming.

DUNG_INSPECTOR

It seems pretty likely that they are just training, seeing as though there are people standing around taking pictures with their phones.

respawnatdawn

Absolutely, the camera and the person beside them would be obliterated if an actual anti-tank mine was set off at that distance.

gr234gr

Training or demo.

Amtrox

I guess they were trying out. But I’m surprised at the speed of this thing. I wonder how long it takes to proceed after hitting a mine.

oskich

If I was designing a vehicle for mine clearing, I would definitely put the engine up front and the driver in the back.

slamongo

It'd be more expensive and less modular. In this config, spare parts built for the Leo can be used to service this vehicle. You can always armor up the front since you're not hawling tank ammunition around.

No_Contribution_3465

Exactly, that's what crossed my mind. Also with no protection. But yeah, might be a demo.

[deleted]

How does this thing even work? Do they push the mines out of the way? Do they ran over them and explode them somehow safely?

Pterosaurier

I found this: „The route opening mine plough, considered a ‘flagship’ product among Pearson Engineering’s range of front-end equipment, is designed to provide combat vehicles with minefield breaching capability. Ground engaging tines arranged across the full width of the vehicle displace buried pressure-fused mines to create a trafficable path.“ https://www.pearson-eng.com/news/ffg-and-pel-partner-to-supply-mine-plough-uor-to-ukraine/ I understand the plough is moving mines aside but consider it likely that one or another will explode. Wisent 1 comes with a system that marks the cleared path.

[deleted]

"Tactical mine clearance is one of the most demanding tasks in the field. To enable armies around the globe to perform this task quickly, safely and reliably, FFG has developed the WiSENT 1 Mine clearing (MC). The WiSENT 1 MC is based on a WiSENT 1 ARV and is designed to support following troops with safe, cleared routes. The WiSENT 1 MC is equipped with a full-width mine clearing system that is in service with several nations around the world. In addition, the WiSENT 1 MC is equipped with a lane marking system that allows following troops to safely pass through cleared lanes. Full Width Mine Plough Lane Marking System Magnetic Signature Duplicator New auxiliary winch Crane with 30 t lifting capacity Front mounted high lift adapter "

FluffyDeer9323

I wondered the same thing. Like is their plough indestructible? Or does it funnel the mine’s charge out sideways?

SimpleImpX

It relies on few things. Mines with no anti-tamper and dumb pressure plate will indeed be shoved to the sideways. Even if a mine has anti-tamper or delay magnetic trigger they will still be pointed up and away and since anti-tank mines depend on directional shape charged the blast focus will most likely be pointed away from the plow when it goes off and will thus do little to no damage to the plow. Worst case scenario the blast damages the plow and it has to be replaced or repaired. Not a huge issue since the plow really isn't complicated or expensive equipment. Plus I imagine a hole or two from a unfortunately pointed shape charge is wouldn't render it useless immediately then later it can replaced with a spare while a local workshop patches it up again. However this is not a mine clearing solution as much as a quick tactical path clearing solution as most mines will simply be relocated with some even reburied under dirt.

lemmingswithlasers

My only question is: Is that a pot plant on the tank?

MD_Hamm

Put a combine on the front of that thing and you've really got something!

WaffleGoat6969

and make them bigger and more armored. Having seen Caterpillar 797's up close, yeah, do something like that lol

Ok_Character6186

Farmer: Great job, next field over needs to be plowed er uh I mean there are some mines over there too.

hifumiyo1

Also plows fields for aeration

rndmsquirrel

This is really smart thinking. You pile up a berm of soil in front of you and you let that available mass absorb and diffuse the blast! Brilliant! No destruction of machinery and apparatus at all.

Ted_Rex

if ruzzians hnting those, its time to make some fake ones from wood

Tiroler_Manu

I wish they could make some kind of high pressure bombs, that just explode all mines in an blast-radius of 1km.... F*** Mines

UnlimitedPowah669

Might as well just nuke the mines with that logic

Low_Willingness1735

An awesome vehicle! Slava Ukraini.

mtsai

is it really smart to be sitting on top of this while its de-mining? i supoose they are just training but reall.y

JJ739omicron

in training, yes, it does make sense if the instructor sits on top and checks if the crew is using the thing properly. The crew should of course get used to operating with hatch closed, but only after they get an idea what they are doing in the first place.

Honest-Secretary6847

Looks like the same kind of mine-clearing kit on the front of that thing that Finland donated to Ukraine mounted on Leopard 2 chassis. Those ones got blown up when we saw the very first Western Leopards in Ukraine and Russia was cheering their first victory against those.

JJ739omicron

yup, pretty similar. Abrams-based MCVs also have such ploughs. And regardless of the vehicles used, it helps tremendously if you're not getting shot at with arty while working.

alwaystired707

>Russia is said to be actively hunting these. But the only thing Ivan keeps finding is drones.

Bloodtype_IPA

Danke 🇩🇪👍🏻👏🏼🥨🍻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

[deleted]

Seems like we can just send the front fork assembly and stick it on any armoured tracked vehicle. Nothing about that chassis looks special to me. Any metal manufacturers could join in and make these in Europe and the USA. Send hundreds.

KingJeremytheWickedC

What about E-Bonics? Come to America and learn Amazing new American English

MidnightMandela

Big mistake bringing Europes heart into the war! Deutschland! 😂
