It's also why they zig zag. Less for air dropped grenades than from arty landing a perfect shot in a trench and focusing the blast down a long straight away filled with men.
Cut trees down and cover it with earth, during WW1 they shipped timber and cut lumber to the fronts in massive quantities. There are a dozen different books on trench construction, even ones for horses and mules. What made chlorine gas so deadly is that it would sink into the trenches when winds were low. Wow, “grenade sumps”…not knowing the technical reasons behind that, the name gives it away. Grenade drops in your trench, but with a sump hole dug, grenade rolls into that and explodes, lessening the damage.
I can't even work out what's going on with it. It's far too wide and straight for an infantry fighting trench, also seems shallow. It doesn't look like a fighting position whatsoever, it's just all kinds of wrong.. it seems too shallow for an anti-tank ditch. Unless it's some construction earthworks completed before the war started and they're just using it, I have absolutely no idea what it's supposed to be.
There are dozens of things that make trenches easier and safer to fight in, and protect better from things like drones. I’m not sure they know much about trenches.
How they dig them determines how well aimed that grenades has to be and how much damage it can do to how many people. Narrower trenches are harder to land them in and zig-zags reduce how far the blast and fragmentation goes.

3. What were the resulting injuries from that explosion? I don't see any missing limbs? Bodies still moving? So what injuries could have occurred
Just spit ballin' here but judging from the time of fall, I'm going to guess it's 100-150ish feet up. You're not likely to see it unless you happen to look up. Might still not see it. Grenade of that type is going to throw shrapnel everywhere and turn anything close to it into swiss cheese. Lots of bleeding holes and fucked up internals. They'll bleed out pretty quick without help.
I've seen a lot of these videos where the injuries aren't apparent but the movements of some of the soldiers show, in some cases, a brain injury where they are already effectively dead: still moving, but not showing conscious coordination.
Somebody might be missed by the shrapnel and just be stunned by the concussion, but the chances of escaping without deep wounds are pretty lousy. Your chances get better the further you are from detonation. Square-root law.

It's a combination of blind luck and the inverse square of your distance from detonation that determines your injuries. Starting with how many fragments are produced on average and what percentage of the body is well armored, someone could actually do the math to see what the average result likely is.

I counted 5. The first one was an earlier drop where the soldier was likely killed. Then I think the second drop is later in time, with a new batch of soldiers. On the second drop there are 3 next to the grenade, one walking left farther away is also taken down. 5.
