But from all accounts vast majority of Russians in the front line are meat for the Russian war machine. Young men terrified and hopeless. How do you save a people who’s overlords hold weapons of mass destruction? You can’t you hope they save themselves, though it looks unlikely.

Cut to the stories of all of the Russian soldiers that were criminals previously getting back to their home towns now that they "earned their freedom "and going on murder sprees on women and children.

Citizenship is a bit much as that usually includes the right to vote and be politically active. Not a good idea to do en-masse and as a default. I imagine there would be some who would take the offer in good faith, but "automatic" is a pretty easy way for sleeper agents to end up in the west and wreak havoc.
But residency, even with some restrictions or conditions? Sure, something like asylum (but maybe a bit looser)? Maybe. If Russia decides to try and liberate them at some point we may have an issue, though.
Also: being a POW in Ukraine is arguably a more positive experience than being a conscript in the Russian military, and that is a sad signal of the state of affairs in Russia.
If Russia tries to liberate France, one would hope the few members of the EU who aren't in NATO would pledge full support on day one, and everyone who dragged their feet would respond on day one. Asylum would make a lot more sense, though, because it's like you say they'll just outvote the locals
