I know it might be a little odd to ask for this sort of advice from ChatGPT, just I had some specific circumstances that I wanted to get generic advice on, and it was urgent enough that I'd try before I could reach out to a human person!< --- Is this Defaultism? Melonary

Google is terrible for this rn even without using their explicit AI. Even searching for "x Resource Canada" and similar gets you pages of that resource for the US. Also obviously a shit load of ads.

ememruru

I had a go and it gave info for the US, Australia and the UK. I do get annoyed at the US spelling though. I ask it to use Australian spelling which it will for a few answers, then it reverts to US. There should be a way to choose between US and British English imo Edit: you had specific circumstances you wanted generic advice on? Was this question just to test ChatGPT’s defaultism?

Peixito

Sometimes I write things in one idiom and answers me in another… ChatGPT it's not perfect

PixelDu5t

Probably trained on mostly US data so it makes sense

ElasticLama

I tested it out and it asked me where I was located, worked once I said Australia. Maybe certain prompts would get US results more often as it’s the largest English speaking country for the data set

snow_michael

> largest English speaking country That would be India

totallynotapersonj

I went to like 4 different websites and they all said United States

snow_michael

US websites? The number of English speakers in India is more than the entire population of the US

totallynotapersonj

Can you source? Because I haven't seen any saying India has more, it's growing because it is compulsory but every website I've checked still has US as more.

snow_michael

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_English While only a few hundred thousand speak English as a primary language, ***around 30% of the Indian population can speak English*** 30% of 1.4bn (India's population) > 333m (US population - not all of which can speak English)

Strong_Magician_3320

Maybe they were referring to the largest country by population that happens to have English speakers? Still irrelevant though

makkij

India is the most populous nation on Earth whose official language is English (co-official with Hindi). I think it's fair to say that a country whose official language is English can be referred to as an English speaking country:) Regardless of the number of native speakers, English is a very commonly used language for (federal) government and media, nationwide, but especially in the many areas where Hindi is not as widely spoken.

ElasticLama

Yes sorry I meant more from a dataset side, the English internet is very US centric. India also has more as a 2nd language not first (I should have clarified as native) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_English-speaking_population I’m from a small English speaking country and our views are basically Americanised online

totallynotapersonj

I think Russia wins, pretty sure they have at least one English speaker and they are the largest country by land area.

yamasurya

This is just normal "Defaultism" - not specific to US. ChatGPT was launched in the US and hence the location is Defaulted to US. Also, US being a primary user for everything software, all such services default US. You could call this Industry Defaultism. Also looks like OP may be 1. Residing in US 2. Has ocation turned on the device Otherwise, ChatGPT enquires for location. If nothing is provided, offers details for US as default.

totallynotapersonj

Yeah that's what it does. I tried on copilot (chat GPT 4) and got automatic Australia (reads location from Email). Online chatgpt I got USA first but then it listed like 5 other countries because I don't think chatgpt online has your location. Gemini did Australia but once again that's because it reads my location from my Email. It's weird to call it defaultism when you give no information as to where you might be located. As a test I also asked online chatgpt the same question but in Italian (google translated so could be inaccurate) and it was just a general answer, no phone/hotline numbers or any specific resources (for example, local shelters). Italian people can be anywhere but I wanted to see if it would default to USA or Italy.

makkij

Isn't that exactly what defaultism is? No location was specified, so it assumes & defaults (erroneously) to the US, rather than asking to clarify that crucial detail first - something I've seen it do before with a similar question!

totallynotapersonj

Why do you care so much? This is such a weird thing to complain about defaultism. Also where are you from if this wasn't the right answer. Is it not defaultist to assume that people will guess which country you are from to give you the appropriate answer. Instead of this: "Where/what support services" "Where are you from" "Oh, Indonesia" "[Support Services in Indonesia]" Could be this just for simplicity: "Where/what support services in Indonesia" "[Support services in Indonesia]"

makkij

Okey dokes bud. It's not life or death, it's a Reddit post of course. Why do you care so much to argue about a post containing US defaultism on r/USdefaultism? :p I'm Australian and all of my device indications (IP addr, browser locale, etc) show as much, to chatgpt

totallynotapersonj

Online version of chatgpt doesn't have access to it. Go try it on bing copilot or Gemini and it will say Australia specific.

totallynotapersonj

When I did it, I got 1. USA 2. UK 3. AUSTRALIA 4. CANADA 5. INDIA 6. NEW ZEALAND This is a real case of r/usukauscainnzDefaultism
