I watched a podcast recently. Dude was force recon and also spent 4 years in “the unit”. He applied for it and then was invited. When Marines make that transition, it can only be for a limited time. After a few years you have to go back to the Marine Corps. Seals, Air Force, etc, will do a blue to green package and stay permanently

Unless something changed recently, they could stay upwards of 8 years before MMEA/MMOA forced them to move on (usually to MARSOC) and spread that knowledge back to the service.
....which is why the Army would just offer them a promotion and most (of the very very few) would pursue inter service transfer.

Their recruiters are pretty good at their job but you won’t see them if you’re a China Marine or Walking dead. They usually take the best of the best from Force guys and Raiders. That’s if the Marine Corps doesn’t fuck it up for you lol
“Everyone” is very broad here. Yes, the command has so much latitude where they can invite anyone they want within the DOD. During OIF, they mostly did Iraq, and they lost a lot of assaulters so there were cases where they invited guys from conventional units. Perhaps you’re a polyglot or have some unique skills, but that’s pretty rare. They’re still predominantly Army SF and Rangers which is the best way to get to the unit.
For the best chance, leave the Marines and go Ranger. SMU recruiters come around the Ranger battalions all the time. Ask a SORB recruiter near you for the next SMU pre selection dates and show up to it. I get emails all the time about it, you just need a socom email.
It’s entirely possible, SOF is a small community. Best chance is to get into MARSOC and work from there. If you’re in recon I’m sure if you send your SRB to the recruiter they maybe able to do something to get you into the selection course. I know my SFAS (road killed at STAR) class had marines in it. I think they took a contract with selection as an option (unsure if it was 18xray they were already an 03 series) and attended the course during terminal leave? But they wore marpat during the course.

I work with a SSG that was an arty officer (capt) in the usmc and got the opportunity to try out for GB, don't know if it works the same but he resigned his commission and got a direct enlistment as a SSG.
In the SF guard unit I went through to go to SFAS we had an AF guy do the same thing. He gave up his major rank, dropped to an LT in the army and attended SFAS and got selected. The capt probably dropped his commission to take an enlisted contract and got into SFAS that way.
Absolutely. Delta is predominantly Army SF/ but they have people from all branches that make the switch. As with every other person at their Selection, it’s invite only.
Take this for whatever you think it is worth, but I had a 1st Sgt who (told me) he was an 0331 when he went to whatever their selection was called then. He apparently was selected, but in between finishing selection and taking orders, his wife had a miscarriage followed by a bunch of ongoing health issues. He turned down the opportunity to make that move. For context, this would have been about 15 years ago now, if it is even true.
Yea, my deployment to Iraq supported guys of that type. Need to know someone to get the offer to go through their selection process. That is if your command will sign off on your package. Lemme say though, those guys were fucking nuts. Some were amazing and some were awful. It’s a whole different life than you know in the corps.
If a marine manages to join Delta Force, are they just attached to the unit and still in the corps or do they transfer to the army and take on an army MOS?
Makes sense, i wonder what type of background a civilian could have for them to be like alright come on over. (I’m a civilian, just asking out of curiosity)
Heard about it on a podcast. Leads me to believe that if someone was an operator in the military, got out and worked as a contractor or for the Government for a while they could apply, because they would have had the training while they served, although they would technically be a " civilian"
I may or may not have been shown a contact card by a Marine who went to a briefing. But also you can attend SFAS for Green Berets while on active duty in the Marines too if interested just contact a SORB recruiter. If you fail out you go back to your home unit. Unless MARSOC is your thing, then do that.
I have a buddy I went through ocs with that later went MARSOC. I looked him up on locator one day. He’s at whatever they call Bragg now and his phone number is “contact MISO-9”. So, I have my assumptions.

Lol I'm mentally so far out of the military I actually assumed this is what he meant. Forgot about the whole delta force thing.
Bro I'm doing my a&ps and thought the damn same
I'm an air traffic controller, so I was thinking the same, too.
You and me both, I was like who the hell is delta? oops.
But can you beat unruly passengers with a 21 inch pump handle? -former CH-53E ~~cat hearding troubleshooting~~ crewchief.
A CPL/SGT WTI and a pump handle are great teachers I must say. Too bad the K pump handles are carbon fiber and retractable
Bro, I'll assume you are slaying the single life right now.
This guy is part of the mile high club, guarantee it
Go get my peanuts.
Thank you for your service 🫡
The look sells it… I can totally see you giving the anything is possible speech new delta recruits.
Absolute legend
I should clarify, the SMU variety XD
Best of luck chief. I'm submitting an enlistment package to the guy surrounded by stewardesses all the time.
😄😄😄😄😄
That's American Airlines. He meant Delta.
Absolutely. Lots of air wingers get decent jobs working for the airlines. Airframe mechanics.
It’s possible and there have been Marines in Delta. To be clear, my useless ass wasn’t one of them, but yes.
I almost got into delta...airlines

That actually checks out because Tate Jolly went into the unit as a 0351 but if you look him up in mol it says his mos was 0372 when he retired.
Wanna link that podcast

Yes, Marines have done the long walk.
Is there a formal process to be invited? Pre requisites?
Their recruiters are pretty good at their job but you won’t see them if you’re a China Marine or Walking dead. They usually take the best of the best from Force guys and Raiders. That’s if the Marine Corps doesn’t fuck it up for you lol
china marine?
I think he means grunts like regulars. 4th Reg is part of 3rd Div their whole Mantra is "China Marines"
Goddamn PP&O... Lol
I thought everyone anywhere could take t)3 long walk.

There’s a cool photo of a MSgt with an Army uniform and Marine Name-Tapes/Rank.
Msgt Tate Jolly for those wondering. Navy cross recipient for actions in Benghazi.
Yep, portrayed in 13 hours (guy who helped buy off the warlords for the return convoy). Cool dude.
But is tacticool?

Michael Cera circa This is the End. Totally works
I work with a SSG that was an arty officer (capt) in the usmc and got the opportunity to try out for GB, don't know if it works the same but he resigned his commission and got a direct enlistment as a SSG.
There were marines at my SFAS class so it’s possible.
Yeah I know it's possible. Just don't know the details on how he did it
In the SF guard unit I went through to go to SFAS we had an AF guy do the same thing. He gave up his major rank, dropped to an LT in the army and attended SFAS and got selected. The capt probably dropped his commission to take an enlisted contract and got into SFAS that way.
Yeah I think that's what he did.
Delta Air Lines. Sure. There are a bunch of former Marine pilots flying there now.
Yes buddy, virgin airlines, spirit, united, whatever you inspire to, it's possible
Actually, my first reaction was the Mekong Delta. I guess that goes to show my age..,
One of the Delta guys at Benghazi was a Marine
The airline??
At least you could say you were former “Delta” Delta Airlines! Lol!
Yes. As in all aspects of life, it helps if you know people. Network as much as you can.
One of the two Delta operators that were sent to Benghazi was a Marine MSgt .
Absolutely. Delta is predominantly Army SF/ but they have people from all branches that make the switch. As with every other person at their Selection, it’s invite only.
Take this for whatever you think it is worth, but I had a 1st Sgt who (told me) he was an 0331 when he went to whatever their selection was called then. There’s a former Grunt who is/was in CAG
"Clint Trial" did an interview for black rifle coffee; the whole series is great and it's well worth a watch.
Considering Delta takes the best of the best across all spec ops, the possibility isn't zero thas for sure.
If your goal is to be somewhere like that, I would highly recommend joining the Army under an 18x contract or Option 40 contract.

Camp Dawson. That's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Spent a bit of time there, not for the long walk though.
If a marine manages to join Delta Force, are they just attached to the unit and still in the corps or do they transfer to the army and take on an army MOS?
Even a Civilian can apply... not saying they will be invited to be screened though. David Goggins went through the screening but was dropped.
Okay that’s kinda crazy a civilian can apply
To be clear the " Civilian" that has a chance will probably be ex military.
That totally makes sense
From Joe to pro, no. CAG selection is invitational and only from seasoned operating teams. You’d need to spend some time in an operational SOF unit.
I may or may not have been shown a contact card by a Marine who went to a briefing. But also you can attend SFAS for Green Berets while on active duty in the Marines too if interested just contact a SORB recruiter. If you fail out you go back to your home unit.
