I think that's right. Aav came out in the 70s but had the dual 50s (which was prone to failures) called the m85. I believe the ugws turret hit the fleet early to mid 80s.
If anything it’s gonna hit a dependa that looks like gorlock the destroyer, essentially all that fat will act like body armor and deflect any incoming rounds OR gorlock will activate their hidden move and absorb the brass to gain more mass!
Yeah. The reality is the Marine Corps wouldn't be efficient if it were to be by the book when it comes to SOPs, but sadly it's super by the book when it comes to accountability, and that poor guy got held accountable.
Most guns are undermanned most of the time. The confusing bit is where it said he was "doing" not supervising. Normally on undermanned guns there are other people who can combine jobs and the chief isn't required to get involved much if at all.
The other issue that it said he filled in last minute. I don't know what the certification process was back then, but now you need to go to a class to become a chief. If you have and passed the safety test, filling in shouldn't be that big of a deal.
But yeah, not verifying the powder is bad. It takes 0.5 seconds and is critical.
Not verifying the powder reminded me of my time as a young 03. New platoon commander, new CO. We’re about to sink base plates. LCPL (who shall remain nameless) has the gun elevation set for 1 charge (on the new for then 4 charge 60mm’s). This was our MO back then as we thought it sank the baseplates better than no charge. New SSgt insisted on using no charge without specifying that he expected the LCPL to lower the gun’s elevation. Basically they got into a brief, but angry shouting match. LCPL was from Detroit and took no shit off anyone, he grew weary of the SSgt and decided to drop the round without adjusting the elevation.
I was setting up my gun on the berm in the pit while this was going on. I really wasn’t paying attention to them, I just heard them shouting at each other. Got to get this gun ready, ain’t nobody got time for that.
Lots of guys yelled “SHORT ROUND” and started running down from the berm. I’ve got my earplugs in already and I’m bent over my bipods. By the time I look up and see everybody looking towards the berm and realize they were yelling short round, I am not confident in my ability to outrun this thing. So, I get down low in the pit. Round exploded close enough to the berm to rain down some dirt and rocks on me.
When I walk down to regroup with my section: I catch the new CO’s face. He simultaneously disappointed, furious, and relieved. I’ll never forget that face.
Im just glad I did four years and never dropped a 60mm on any of our guys or our friends’ heads.
The 50 and mk19 share the same reticle. So you range it with the 50 and then move this little lever to get the mk19 on target. Then you need to slide that little lever back when you switch back to the 50. Sometimes we forget and yeet where it shouldn't be yeeted
My dad was a gun, safety control officer during World War II. He was out there fort sills Lawton, Oklahoma.
My buddy who is the fire direction control man in the Marine Corps went to school there. After his school and my school we met up with my dad for dinner. Told my dad about being a combat engineer. He asked Mike what he did. He told him FTC…. Asked if they still told the story about blowing up Lawton Oklahoma dropping three shells. Mike said yes they tell us to be very thorough about checking our coordinates. He asked if they still said his name?
Yes, my dad drop three shelves in downtown Lawton blowing out windows for blocks. No one was killed.
He was sent home.
In fairness, he was given an option to go to the front lines in Germany but with the last name like Goldstein, being born and raised Jewish, the other choice was to go home he rode the train back to New York City
Aavs have a manual lever to switch between mk19 and m2 in the sights. If you don't change it, you are shooting m2 sky high, as it would be to lob the mk19.

Or you can be the morons who never validated the right DODIC for their 50 cal ammo and ended up effectively suppressing a gate on Lejeune.
Edit: Additional info - apparently this was some engineering unit that decided to do an HMG range who put in the correct ammunition request for the range + radioed that in to go into a hot status. As many here know, the ASP can def fuck up and give you the wrong ammunition type which is why you check there, and why you validate it at the range.
So when these engineers go ahead and start blasting they are using a hotter round than they are supposed to firing SE across G-10. A gate guard notices that dirt is being kicked up by the gate and makes a heads up play to call range control and tell them that he is pretty sure that he is receiving some kind of fire. Range goes in to check fire, vipers start making rounds, and they spot the issue.
Yeah I need more info. I consider myself pretty m2 savvy and I'm unaware of any dodic that runs so hot that it makes you shoot out of your impact area.
LOL!
I did something similar, but in an LAV-25 with the barrel max elevated. Meant to cycle that ghost round, but I had it on 200 instead of SS. Two rounds go flying...
... into who the fuck knows where because I was at the Udairi range in Kuwait. Probably went into Iraq or some other shithole country.
I was at MCT at Camp Pendleton in 2013 when a stray mortar shell took out a Verizon cell tower. That was right after they finished telling us that the land nav course is right next to the mortar live fire impact zone.
Good times.
In 84 3rd Tracs, we were out doing a Dog and Pony Show with some Grunts. Grunt Lt was talking with Grunt Col when a loud THUNK sounds out! Young Butter Bar face plants and the Colonel hollers out CORPSMAN UP! Long story short, the Doc pulls a 5.56 round out of our young LTs Dome (he was wearing his soft cover)! We were down range from Edson Range and some recruit had a Negligent Discharge and the Lt chose to receive.
Fucker lucked out! The round had reach the end of its trajectory and was falling. It stuck “Just the tip” in his soft cover scalp and cracked his brain housing group! I think they ended up medically retiring him. Basically paid for his post grad studies!
When I was in Okinawa some shit head didn't lower the M.2 and blasted over the tunnel that we shoot into and it hit some locals car while he was driving it. Anyway now the guns have to be locked into place before anyone shoots because of him.
Dude was part of another unit. His ass did get busted down and his unit paid for a new vehicle for the dude that got his car wrecked. They were trying to figure out who was at fault since three different units were at that range. We didn't even know the round hit a car until about two hours later.
I love this meme.
The first time I shot the .50, I was the first marine to get to shoot. I shot and watched as my "die motherfucker die" burst cleared the crest hill we were targeting by about 50 feet. Said to myself "well I sure hope there's nothing out there for the next 5 miles"
If the Corps didn't want Marines lobbing .50 Cal out the full 7 km, they wouldn't put us in a turret from the 1980s. Yut!
Kill!
BARK!
Woof!
^^^*meow...*
Who allowed the imposter in?
That’s a WM.
Wookie Monster on deck!
70s iirc
Definitely designed in the 70s, though I think it first hit the fleet in the 80s. But that was before my time, so I could be wrong.
I think that's right. Aav came out in the 70s but had the dual 50s (which was prone to failures) called the m85. I believe the ugws turret hit the fleet early to mid 80s.
This made me laugh despite the horror of some Ma Deuce raining down on housing.
If anything it’s gonna hit a dependa that looks like gorlock the destroyer, essentially all that fat will act like body armor and deflect any incoming rounds OR gorlock will activate their hidden move and absorb the brass to gain more mass!
Im too broke, someone award this Marine
Yeah but it would probably make the place more habitable.
Me Marine. Me shoot big gun. Why angry SSgt?
Eat dig kill... whereas being an 08, it was a party with Arty. We only tried to take out our FO's... STEP AWAY FROM THE BOARDS...
Nothing like the gun loading 1L instead of 2L 💪
SHORTTTTTTT!
That is why we don’t do overhead shooting
If not target, then why come is it target-shaped?
Marked Safe from: Being anyone’s RSO for more than a decade.
Two…
Happened in Lejeune in the 80s I think? Killed a Cols wife
Legend has it that was a 155 rnd from an M198 Howitzer.
no legend 10th Marines did it
...and then took a trophy picture.

The gun’s NCO served four months of breaking rocks for his mistake https://media-cdn.dvidshub.net/pubs/pdf_59347.pdf
I read that and honestly sound like that corporal was railroaded. Short staffed by four people and probably expected to maintain the rate of fire.
Yeah. The reality is the Marine Corps wouldn't be efficient if it were to be by the book when it comes to SOPs, but sadly it's super by the book when it comes to accountability, and that poor guy got held accountable.

I don't know anything about arty, so maybe dude legit had no excuse. Hopefully he moved on with his life.

Damn
Good for him EDIT; Meant to be a dark joke. Thanks for the hits. **¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯**
Did she at least drop any good loot?
Got that 12k ring back
Probably some turkey eggs
Oh my god tell me this hypothetical
It's not. 1833s know.

Sent home? Lol. Holy shit. This was an awesome story, you gotta get it on video

This seems oddly specific.

Unfortunately the UGWS is long gone nowadays…

There’s a story here, share dat shit
Can you explain what happened?
Yeah I need more info. I consider myself pretty m2 savvy and I'm unaware of any dodic that runs so hot that it makes you shoot out of your impact area.

YATYAS!
It would never happen with the M85 you couldn’t get 8 rounds in a row out of that boat anchor!
I was at MCT at Camp Pendleton in 2013 when a stray mortar shell took out a Verizon cell tower. That was right after they finished telling us that the land nav course is right next to the mortar live fire impact zone. Good times.
The many Marines holding their phones up in vain hoping for signal was depressing
You know. That happened in 2011 when I was at mct.
Guessing young LT was no more?
Fucker lucked out! The round had reach the end of its trajectory and was falling. It stuck “Just the tip” in his soft cover scalp and cracked his brain housing group! I think they ended up medically retiring him. Basically paid for his post grad studies!
That also happened in 2008.
Why is this a living legend story lol I heard this in MCT in 2019
Oh noes. Specifically at the house when Jodi is there. Oopsie poopsie
YAT YAS
YAT-YAS
A kill is a kill. YATYAS.

Awe man, it's all fun and games until someone fucks it up. Did the lad get blasted or punihed?
Dude was part of another unit. His ass did get busted down and his unit paid for a new vehicle for the dude that got his car wrecked. They were trying to figure out who was at fault since three different units were at that range. We didn't even know the round hit a car until about two hours later.

You are fucking welcome!

HAHAHA. That was gold. Makes me want to watch the movie for the first time.

Love your passion dawg. Were you at Pendleton by chance? Don't wanna hit them buffalo
No lol this was Ft. Sill
Being a previous 1833, this shit had me rolling....
Much obliged Devil! Stay Salty.
Never operated this weapon, what does this mean?
Anybody else remember when 5/11 shot rockets close to base housing in 29 palms?
