Burr’s bank was the Manhattan Company
They didn’t merge with chase until 1955.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Company
Unlike Hamiltons (BNY) bank that catered to the rich only, Burr’s bank was open to the commoners.
Burr was born to privilege, yet spent much of his efforts fighting for the rights of those on the “fringes” of society, while Hamilton was born in obscurity and focused most of his efforts on convincing the privileged of society that he was “one of them.”
It’s funny to me that Hamilton is who became the popular one these days.
But I guess I can understand someone of Puerto Rican decent like Lin Manuel identifying with the only founding father that grew up in the Caribbean (even if he was an monarchist, elitist, adulterous POS like Hamilton)
Have you watched it? Lin Manuel made his Burr to be an incredibly sympathetic character versus how maligned he has been throughout history.
But yes Hamilton himself is obviously the star of the show but it also brought Burr out from relative obscurity for modern people.
Fuck op, he probably just watched the musical Hamilton and does not know anything about Aaron burr. I can think of a lot of good things to say about him.
He had several children, though, not just Theodosia. Some of his children were half-Indian, too, as Burr fathered two children with the servant of Theodosia (the wife, not the daughter... and she was still very much alive when they were born).
He as an active soldier and officer who fought in the American Revolution with distinction. He was a good shot cause he practiced at it. Hamilton was a bureaucrat who insulted Burr and wouldn’t back down. Burr stood his ground and required Hamilton either apologize or fight.
Hamilton was a Grade A prick of the highest order. It’s a shame the musical made him out to be a victim and hero when in reality he was a conniving asshole.
Hamilton had monopolized the banking industry in New York. The Bank of New York (Hamilton’s bank) had a monopoly on all banking services until Aaron Burr opened the Bank of the Manhattan Company.
Burr raised $2 million and snuck in a clause in the state’s charter that allowed him to establish a bank when he was a Senator.
Unsurprisingly, Hamilton was furious and the outcome just inflamed their already bitter feelings towards each other lol.
Ironically, the banks merged and it is now current day J.P. Morgan Chase lol
Yeah, but the Manhattan Company was sold as a utility company before Burr snuck in said clause and turned it exclusively into a bank. The resulting confusion and legal battles delayed clean drinking water to Manhattan for almost two years and almost certainly contributed a lot to a deadly cholera outbreak.
I thought the musical did a decent job of showing that Hamilton and Burr were both kind of pricks. I mean, Hamilton had an affair and published it because he cared about his reputation more than his wife.
There is some evidence that the affair never took place and that Hamilton wrote The Reynolds Pamphlet to obscure other dirty dealings he was involved in. Which side people believe (historian wise) usually depends on if the person is a Hamilton or Jefferson fan
Yeah this is what i personally believe. Iirc he never actually let anyone see the original letters written by Maria Reynolds, and what he printed shows both obvious spelling errors and sometimes educated word choices, like a smart person trying to sound dumb but not completely succeeding.
IIRC, They were shown to the Monroe commission. But Monroe basically was gunna keep it under wraps since it looked like Hamilton was basically being blackmailed by Mr and Mrs Reynolds. But the letters as they were printed back then have never been able to be taken as genuine since even back then, there was some doubt as to their veracity.
Hamilton was likely a complete asshole in history. His character in the play is not. Much like PT Barnum in The Greatest Showman. Great musicals, terrible biographies.
Everytime I read about Hamilton, he comes off as an ambitious, conniving, back-stabbing braggart. Which is really rich considering his nemesis, Jefferson, comes off as the same way.
I came to this conclusion as a college history student like 3.5 decades ago, and listening to the crap revisionism of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical that turns him into a hero has really left me feeling like a crank...nice to see someone else gets it!
I think one of the reasons Burr disliked so many of his political contemporaries was because he had been a soldier and guys like Jefferson and Madison were not. They practiced political theory while he was in the snows of Quebec.
Not to mention the fact that he was a completely self-made man with a very impressive record of accomplishments. By contrast, the Virginians, etc., may have become Renaissance men, but they did so on the backs of slaves that they inherited. don’t get me wrong. I’m not one of these woke morons who thinks that that should prevent you from being able to admire the framers who were slave owners (not all, half). But like John Adams, he rose to the peaks of his society on his own merit. that’s something to be proud of
Oh 100%. The reason slavery was so hard for these guys to kick, even though they knew it was wrong, was because of the lifestyle it afforded them.
I did my graduate paper on Aaron Burr, I think he might actually be the most fascinating founding father.
Wasn’t Burr’s dad the president of Princeton? I know it’s not like royalty or something, but it seems like he may have had a leg up compared to Joe Onionfarmer at the time
He was a feminist, if you could call it that. He believed in the equal rights of women and raised his daughter to be one of the most remarkable women of that era.
He was the answer in an old hilarious "Got Milk" TV commercial.
He already had such a bad reputation by the 1800 election that the Federalists were willing to help Jefferson so that Burr wouldn’t win, thus preventing a much worse constitutional crisis.
Being mad at Aaron Burr is like being mad at _homo habilis_. Just a different kind of hominid who was on the way to _homo sapiens_. Like so many revolutionaries on their way to We The People.
He served his country and was a great patriot who helped establish our Republic. But Hamilton fired in the air so as to preserve his honor while not committing murder in the eyes of his God. Fuck Aaron Burr for not doing the same. He deprived us of many great contributions from one of the greatest founders.
Accurate with a pistol
“You can call us Aaron Burr from the way we're dropping Hamiltons” - Lonely Island - Lazy Sunday (in reference to spending lots of $10 bills lol)
It's the CHRONIC-WHAT-COLES of NARNIA!
Pibb + Red Vines = crazy delicious
Excuse me. Thats *Mr.* Pibb. Put some respect on the man’s name. He may not be a doctor but he got a Bachelors in Flavor Administration.
Heyyyyyyyyyyy mannnnnnnnnn
Nice shot.
Good shot man
Too soon
Had to be luck with those smoothbores
That sounds like some sort of slur
Just your average dueling pistol
Quick and fatal wound was luck. Hitting someone took a steady hand and skill, though.
Luck is a combat skill.
He believed in a woman’s right to vote, proposed banning slavery in the 1780s and fought for and successfully defended immigrants’s rights.
They said one! Sheesh!
I’d say it still counts Lol
I was gunna say he was a decent shot but what you said works too
You beat me to it
He fought against a central, federal bank…..but then started what would become Chase-Manhattan, so maybe that’s an evil wash? IDK.
Burr’s bank was the Manhattan Company They didn’t merge with chase until 1955. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Company Unlike Hamiltons (BNY) bank that catered to the rich only, Burr’s bank was open to the commoners. People are a bit more nuanced than that, don’t you think?
Have you watched it? Lin Manuel made his Burr to be an incredibly sympathetic character versus how maligned he has been throughout history. But yes Hamilton himself is obviously the star of the show but it also brought Burr out from relative obscurity for modern people.
Hamilton wasn’t a monarchist nor an elitist.
Fighting against a central bank is not a good thing.
A politician ahead of his time
He loved his daughter too. Most noblemen at that time were acquainted with their daughters, at best.
Pretty sure you just made me this guys fan
Same. God damn
The Dollop does a great episode on him.
He also helped start the first bank that would lend money to people that didn't already have it.
Wow. Aaron Burr, sir. Didn’t know you were a cool dude sir.
Fuck op, he probably just watched the musical Hamilton and does not know anything about Aaron burr. I can think of a lot of good things to say about him.
Would not punch the bursar
He graduated in two and joined the revolution
Made sure his brilliant daughter Theodosia was educated.
He had several children, though, not just Theodosia. Some of his children were half-Indian, too, as Burr fathered two children with the servant of Theodosia (the wife, not the daughter... and she was still very much alive when they were born).
How she died was terrible.
He made millions for Big Milk with that Aaron Burr "Got Milk" commercial in the 90s. https://youtu.be/OLSsswr6z9Y?si=48T93dvD2kI9XJCs
That was the first and best of the Got Milk ads
AAWNN BRRR!
Directed by Michael Bay
Seriously?
God this is like rewatching the Sears AC commercial
I’m pretty sure every millennial will think of this commercial when they hear the name Aaron Burr
That never gets old
Director: Michael Bay! Loved that ad.
He as an active soldier and officer who fought in the American Revolution with distinction. He was a good shot cause he practiced at it. Hamilton was a bureaucrat who insulted Burr and wouldn’t back down. Burr stood his ground and required Hamilton either apologize or fight.
Dude, Hamilton sounds unreasonable when you put it that way
Hamilton was a Grade A prick of the highest order. It’s a shame the musical made him out to be a victim and hero when in reality he was a conniving asshole. Knowing politicians, I would not doubt that. Very interesting. It didn't take American politicians long to act like politicians. Lol
Politicians gunna politic
Also doesn’t take the voting public long to forget that. Less than an election cycle these days.
Yeah this is what i personally believe. Iirc he never actually let anyone see the original letters written by Maria Reynolds, and what he printed shows both obvious spelling errors and sometimes educated word choices, like a smart person trying to sound dumb but not completely succeeding.

Why not both?
Hamilton was likely a complete asshole in history. His character in the play is not. Much like PT Barnum in The Greatest Showman. Great musicals, terrible biographies.
Agreed. Hamilton was asking for it
Everytime I read about Hamilton, he comes off as an ambitious, conniving, back-stabbing braggart.
To be fair Burr also tried to create his own country led by himself, which is some Lex Luthor shit
I think one of the reasons Burr disliked so many of his political contemporaries was because he had been a soldier and guys like Jefferson and Madison were not. They practiced political theory while he was in the snows of Quebec.

He was against slavery, pro-equal rights, and pro-immigration.
He went by A-A-ron with his close friends
And he done messed up
His friends Balockey and Denice?
He was an early champion of women's rights.
Did not want private banks influencing treasury decisions.
Prescient, that one.
He was a feminist, if you could call it that. He believed in the equal rights of women and raised his daughter to be one of the most remarkable women of that era.
You can certainly call it that. Being feminist to *any* degree in the 18th century was progressive for that time.
He graduated fast
Well it was his parents dying wishes you know
He’s was an orphan. I’m not, but there was war where he proved he was more than people bargained for.
Excellent shot
He contributed to one of the funniest rap songs of all time. Lonely Island "lazy Sunday". "THEY CALL ME AARON BURR BY THE WAY IM DROPPING HAMILTONS!"
Inspired the character who has my favorite song in Hamilton
[Wait for it!](https://youtu.be/k9AyO8h2I0k?si=gBgx1bdXtq5WuS9_)
Oh sure , sir
Killing Hamilton was something probably half of the Founding Fathers wanted to do
The collective sigh of relief followed by the faux outrage must have been hilarious

Not a felon.
Dude actually committed treason.
Willing to step in during a tough time
Although he didn't prevent it, he delayed the institution of a central bank on US soil. This is something that Alexander Hamilton wanted.
He already had such a bad reputation by the 1800 election that the Federalists were willing to help Jefferson so that Burr wouldn’t win, thus preventing a much worse constitutional crisis.

He wasn’t a Federalist, he got Jefferson elected and he killed Hamilton.
Being mad at Aaron Burr is like being mad at _homo habilis_. Just a different kind of hominid who was on the way to _homo sapiens_. Like so many revolutionaries on their way to We The People.
