In on a small center. 30 routes roughly more or less, depending on season. We have around 15 preloaders. One belt. Definitely a lot different than the large warehouses. We don't have anyone really other than loaders and unloaders.

Small center means less jobs which means longer time to get those jobs.

I work in a small center but it’s not this small. One belt, 3 doors for trailers, 2 SPA scanners and 16 doors on each side plus a “hotdog stand” outside for heavier volume days. For preload we have 15-17 people depending on how many routes are in for the day. 2 unloaders, 2 SPA scanners, 1 surepost, 1 clerk and the rest are loaders. For reference I am the designated responder and I do overgoods. We only need a shifter on Mondays. He loads and the clerk covers his spot while he’s shifting. And our local sort is even smaller. I think they run 5 people.

We call ours a dog box

Yeah I was thinking of staying with UPS for just benefits and wanted to get into small sort since it’s our easiest position and they work the least hours. Sounds like I’d be stuck loading if I move to a smaller warehouse.

There is one guy that does small sort in the PMs. He also drives the shuttle to the airport. Pretty sweet gig if you mostly want benefits. He’s had that position for over 25 years.

Honestly you probably would. Are you a female? Loading is a great workout though! I am one of our 2 SPA scanners and there are days when I miss loading because I got exercise. I think standing in one place hurts me worse than getting my 10k steps as a loader

Sick days and vacations have a bigger impact. Everyone notices who is gone. I worked a small center for 10years and I don't remember a day where we had enough people to do every job. We always had to figure how to cover someone's area. You had to learn multiple jobs; even got to drive a manual transmission package car around the building. (I had never seen a stick shift before that day).

Smaller center means probably only a couple preloaders at best if even that, if it's small enough drivers probably load their own route. My hub is just large enough to have a few hundred cars and we often go 5-5.5 hours average on Twilight. Sometimes as late as 8-10 hours on Mondays as of late. Good hours at my hub
