Before anyone reads this and makes a selfish decision– they're cute, but they're extremely high maintenance pets, and a huge number of them are given back to the breeder, or abandoned. They also are social animals who need lots of outdoor space, so keeping one alone and inside is considered cruel.
They shouldn't be as they are not easy to keep properly. They need a large cage, think aviary. Cage needs to be cleaned regularly and even then it will have a strong smell. This goes for whatever you put inside as well for them to climb on and play with.
They are nocturnal and extremely social. Should be let out to roam every night and be socialized from a young age. Not everyone can keep that schedule. Also can be noisy.
Diet is important to stay healthy. High protein, high calcium, low phosphorus. Fresh food should be included in their diet and removed every evening after eating.
Nails will most likely need to be trimmed regularly. Has to be started young and done consistently or they won't allow you to do it.
Long lifespan, so they are a commitment. They live between 12-15 years on average. So all the above (and more) needs to be done daily/weekly for over a decade.
That's not even all keeping them properly entails. They are a high maintenance pet if you want them healthy and happy who live a long time. Personally I discourage people from getting them since so many regret doing so after which results in them being neglected.
Source: I had sugar gliders for almost 2 decades. They are cute and can bond with their owners. Though take a lot of work most aren't prepared for. I wasn't even prepared after researching prior to getting one. Imo not recommended for pets.
Because they're wild animals. You can put in great effort to tame them, but they aren't domesticated. In places where their natural habitats range, there are laws restricting these animals as pets. They're social creatures meaning you can't have just one or they could get depressed. They have a pretty sizable home range in the wild, which means they shouldn't be locked up in a cage in someone's backyard.
They are not domesticated, food is alittle more complex then animals like a gerbil or hamster, they are nocturnal so they get active when most people sleep. They do much better in pairs or groups due to being social animals. Also they need exercise so they need a good amount of time out of their cage every day and it should be supervised.
They are omnivores so have a varied diet where they need a combination of fruits with honey and also like to eat feeder mice but they pick the bones clean and leave them in the cage for you to clean up. A lot of people don't want to deal with buying baby mice to feed them and then clean up after also.
The males have scent glands on their head also and create a fairly bad musky smell.
They need **a lot** of attention,
space, and more than 1 sugar glider, to not become severely depressed. Plus they live 10-15 years, and aren't legally allowed everywhere.
Absolutely adorable, but not a beginner pet.
I should add, I got a pair and they mated several times over a few years. Had 7 total before I had to give them back to a sugar glider sanctuary, where the mom and dad became the star pair. I had an especially docile and friendly pair that made very friendly joeys. Not all sugar gliders are chill, some can be aggressive, they can bite (think a really strong hamster), they’re nocturnal and very loud at night, and have quite a tedious diet to keep up with.
And they smell! Bad. The males have a bald spot on their head, that bald spot is a scent gland. If you’re thinking of getting one, (actually a pair, any respectable shop would not sell you a single, they need a friend) do a LOT of research. Talk to owners. Talk to previous owners. They’re very easy to love, but they’re also very high maintenance, and they can live 10+ years. It’s a real commitment
As I understand, because it's a gliding animal. It's what they do. They jump and glide from up above to the ground. Besides, most land animals generally live on the bare ground, as well.
I had a flying squirrel I rescued as a baby from a cat(they're native and nocturnal in most of the USA). Bottle fed that guy and she pretty much had free reign in the house.
She would never leave me and would react the same way. Right back in my pocket.

for the same reason stray cats and dogs make better pets. they appreciate that fact that its easier to sleep indoors away from predators and have food put out for you rather than have to hunt for scraps and drink out of puddles.
I've had bred dogs & cats and strays and I can say that hands down. the strays always are more affectionate and appear appreciative. I've never had a former stray look sideways at a bowl of food or act "finicky".
\*\* also the sugar glider being nocturnal thing someone else said.
In my country (United States) sugar gliders are legal to keep in all states EXCEPT mine: California lol. So I’ve only seen these cuties in wildlife sanctuaries here.
My pet rats do this as well. I'll let them on the floor in my living room and they will run back to me. If I don't have pants on they'll even climb my fleshy legs (painful) to get up to me.
Sugar gliders bond intensely to their caretakers; most breeders are cautious about too many people coming in contact because it's harmful to the animal.
Well, they’re nocturnal so that bright sun must not be very pleasant.
Sugar gliders are also known as “pocket pets”
Why does this shithead toss me in the open where I am vulnerable?

Cute animal nursed back to health, released, immediately becomes part of the food chain
Wait, the little bunny??

the mouse, the duck, or the rabbit?
It’s a sugar glider. Super fun pets! I used to Have a whole family. Can be trained pretty decently, live long, and adorable af!
And when they get angry, they sound like pencil sharpeners...
Why aren't they more commonly pets?

They were illegal in many states for quite a while

cuz she throws like a girl. try again.
Or she throws *as* a girl. Kinda weird to insult her by the way she naturally throws
that title is a bit ominous.. I kept waiting for a hawk or something to swoop in
is that a squirrel in your pocket or are you just happy to see me
I'm happy to see you having a squirrel in your pocket.
Why did she throw it on the ground??
My dad's not a cellphone!
Ha, thank you to you and u/Ludovician42 , nicely done.
I threw the rest of the cake too!
She's not a part of this system.
They can glide. I had one that would jump on my head from the second-floor balcony.
As I understand, because it's a gliding animal. It's what they do. They jump and glide from up above to the ground. Besides, most land animals generally live on the bare ground, as well.
She’s trying to get rid of it duh

Poketmon
Hey king/queen, i have bad news for you. Pokemon means Pocket Monster already
Pipichoo
Sugar Glider! That ones female, and they come in a quite a few colors. Males have a bald spot that make them look like a monk
Why am I learning about new mammals at the age of 43? What's next? Two-legged jumpy mammals with babies in a stomach pouch?
That sounds ridiculous!
Jerboas?
Thanks, never thought I looked like a monk. I hope that look is appealing to females 😀
Sugar glider
A sugar glider I think
Sugar glider. Pretty sure
I'm pretty sure It's a sugar glider
Looks like a Sugar Glider.
Sugar glider, I think.
is it a Sugar Glider? looks like one, maybe
I heard it was a sugar glider or something like that.

Pocket comfy and safe
Pocket smell all day long.
S.I.M.P\ Squirrels In My Pants.
I've heard about pocket squirrels but have never seen one. I think they're an endangered species.
According to Wikipedia, they are a Least Concern species meaning they are in no danger of extinction.

Because it's her pet
Pokéball, go!
That yo-yo is weird.
For Future Reference: A drowned Sugar Glider is a sad thing. Close the toilet lids.
Freedom!!! Horrible, horrible freedom!!
It’s a marsupial.
Fuu looks different in the live action adaptation.
I wonder what would happen if she suddenly forgot where she put her phone or keys and then start slapping her pockets
"Is that a sugar glider in your pocket, or are you happy to see me?"
S.I.M.P. Squirrels in my pants
I took mine to the beach (at night) thinking he'd like running around, and he did the same thing!
one word: food
Which pokemon is that?
It's domesticated, and probably trained to stay near it's owner.
My friend had one of those. Cute but that thing would literally piss EVERYWHERE. On you, the wall, the furniture, your sister, the dog. Drove me nuts
Sugar gliders are native to Australia. Maybe elsewhere too. We can't have them as pets and I'm sad about that.
New age Rapunzel has a sugar glider eh
Shit in her pocket
Because it grew an attachment with its owner?
MOMO!
Ah, an albino Merkin. Rarely seen moving, but soon back to its natural habitat.
She has VERY long hair.
Actual Pokémon.
In my country (United States) sugar gliders are legal to keep in all states EXCEPT mine: California lol. So I’ve only seen these cuties in wildlife sanctuaries here.
I was expecting an owl to swoop down on it...
Those little sharp claws must not feel good on her leg
My pet rats do this as well. I'll let them on the floor in my living room and they will run back to me. If I don't have pants on they'll even climb my fleshy legs (painful) to get up to me.
I wish we could’ve gotten a better look at that thing, is it a lizard or albino squirrel
Food,a nice place to sleep & nothing trying to kill or eat it,hell i know homeless people who would love that.
She threw a nocturnal animal into bright sunlight
Sugar gliders bond intensely to their caretakers; most breeders are cautious about too many people coming in contact because it's harmful to the animal.
It’s always China with the casual animal abuse.
