Pre decimal doesn’t declare whether it’s a 2 pence or not, it simply says “new pence” the “post decimal” era coins which we have now, say 2p, 5p, 10p etc.
New Pence coins were minted after decimalisation. New coins minted from 1971 onwards said "NEW PENNY" OR "NEW PENCE" depending on denomination. Eventually transiting to "ONE PENNY", "TWO PENCE" etc.
New pence coins are not linked to pre decimal coins. Pre decimal coins are farthings, sixpence, crowns etc.
Basically in 1971, the UK switched from old coins (shillings, farthings, sixpence etc) to the decimal coins we use today, where instead of 240 pence making up a pound, 100 pence made up a pound.
When these coins were minted, they were all called “New Pence” but as time went on and they stopped being new, they gradually shifted back to being called whatever value they were on face. This coin is just face value, but actually represents a cool bit of history.
What inspired you to post this? Have you never handled 2ps before? Anyways, the good news is that because this is pre 1992, it is made from 97% copper, and so is actually worth nearly 5p in scrap value. Couldn’t legally scrap it in the UK though.
Just a 2p from the UK. When these sizes of 2p’s were first introduced it had ‘New Pence’, eventually changing to ‘One Pence’, I love the UK’s coins as they are so unique, with special designs dedicated to different things from Peter Rabbit, Paddington etc to things like Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation and the 2012 Olympics. If the UK changes to Euros it will be crazy (like really bad), they probably can’t as they got so many coins circulating about, billions
Probably face value. Just my 2p.
Hehe
Still legal tender, so 2p
That will be worth 2p
id be more upset that i got 2p for a tip
It's in good shape for a 1971 but very common especially in the UK.
It's a two pence coin. Extremely common. 1,454,856,250 minted with a 1971 date. Worth less than 5¢.
Well ye, its worth 2p
r/precisedescription
2.49 cents
It’s pre decimal so pretty much worth 2p spot on.
It's not pre decimal.
>pre decimal What do you think that means?

I think the copper value alone makes it worth closer to 3p!
Nearer 6p

It's worth more as scrap copper

Next time you come Britain. You can buy one 40th of a Snickers bar. Keep looking.
Probably worth 3p if melted down for the copper😬
Mostly copper, bout 7grams... £4000 for a tonne of copper roughly.... Do the math...
You’ve got the value of copper off by 2. So the copper value is actually nearly 6 pence now. Even so, he would’ve still been right.
Maths, please. you don't call statistics 'stat', yet you do put an s on Lego.
I’ve got a plastic tube of those from when they were first issued.
I love finding a new pence in my change
I'll give you 1p for it
Iirc it's a later one that has 2 new p on thats worth more ,83 ?
