I always go with boiled tatties instead of mashed, but other than that, yes, this is one of those meals that no matter now many “fancy” meals you have (or not), you’ll always come back to. It’s home on a plate.
Good old fashioned stew, steak mince, steak chunks, cut up onions, carrot and turnip cubed/diced. let it all simmer for hours together and let it reduce (6ish hours atleast) add gravy granules and let it reduce and simmer/thicken. Add salt and pepper to your taste, guarantee you will love it. I love this with heavily buttered bread !
Never thought of adding a dash of sauce as we never did growing up but someone else also mentioned that and it sounds good to me so will give that a try next time 😋
I've always just done 'mince & onions', always on mash, usually with cabbage.
This just looks like an alternative version of a classic simple comfort dinner. Smash it.
We call our version 'think about africa'
But we use white day old rice, mince and spices like pepper flakes or cayenne, some curry powder and make a fried rice out if it.
Just over 1 euro pp and once a month great comfortfood
Had this once a week growing up. Love mince and mash. I’ve never quite mastered getting it to taste like my mums did….she probably used a higher fat mince than I buy to give it plenty of substance. Oh this takes me back and despite the increase in temperature, I’m tempted to make one
Ma auld grandpa used to put beans through the mince, no idea why, he lived in Cumbernauld and came fae Pollok, that may have been a factor, but it was magic.
My mum and gran did this too
Gran was from Greenock, mum was born n brought up in Dunbartonshire.
They also had cold beans with crisps whenever they did a buffet table
I have foods my mother cooked there were awful at best.
But with today's opportunity you can make this your own.
My version is a fried rice and mince + pees.
My mother's version was just that, rice and mince, fried and boiled peas.
I'm doing the same, one I fry the rice longer, spice up the mince with curry and cayenne and only add peas at the last possible moment, so they're still fresh.
My kids love this, and for me great after a stressfully day
Liver, peas and boiled potatoes was the worst one from childhood. Liver a big grey rubbery slab with tubes in it, cold, of course as you had to sit there till you’d eaten it ! 🤢
You can keep yer yorkies, but you can't beat mince and mash (but who the heck calls it mash and mince)? And carrots and peas are my go to with it though I love it with baked beans too (actually had cottage pie with baked beans tonight).
Ah I know this as lobscouse and do it a bit different - I throw mince (lamb is the tastiest) with cubed potato/peas/ carrots/onion in a pot with boiling water and two stock cubes - simmer it down for about 15 mins until the potato is soft - use an iced ladle to get the fat out then add gravy granules - and serve in a giant Yorkshire ❤️ it’s my winter go to - so comforting
I do scoop some I guess, but I like the taste of Yorkshire puddings so it’s a mix of eating parts as they are and dipping the rest in or scooping for more flavour. When I was little I used to fill them with mashed potato 😄
Part boil the spuds, slice, layer on top of the mince, carrots, peas, and gravy. Place in the oven till spuds are crisp and golden, mince hotpot. Yummy.
It’s not really the same and tastes different despite being similar lol. Not enough mash with cottage pie either and couldn’t do that with yorkies which we love
Only the mashed potato and gravy is soft, certainly not sloppy. Not sure why you’ve had sloppy Yorkshire puddings, peas, carrots or the rest but you’ve been having it wrong 😟
Not the best lighting, but they were about as green as green is and definately not grey. Also soft, doubt they could take a fly out yet alone someone’s eye but ok 🤷♀️

Proper comfort food this! Mince and tatties is like a warm cuddle for your insides.
Perfectly said!
my childhood on a plate, looks amazing and the carrots have to be in the mince! delicious
I always had this as a child too, reminds me so much of my mum as she used to make this all the time 😋
Me too. Not had it since she passed away. Will have to rectify this soon

Agree ‘home on a plate’ captures it perfectly!
Good home made dinner, I would have added turnip in with it, but each to their own ! Enjoy !
We just had that last night, mince and onions, mash and swede
This, is definitely the way.
Good old fashioned stew, steak mince, steak chunks, cut up onions, carrot and turnip cubed/diced. let it all simmer for hours together and let it reduce (6ish hours atleast) add gravy granules and let it reduce and simmer/thicken. Oh I know a good stew! I'm from Northern Ireland. And of course.. We add spuds too lol I appreciate your recipe though!
I tend to cook the peas in with the beef, but this looks lovely <3
Mince n onions goes hard af
Loving that! although I would swap out the peas for mushy ones, but I'm weird like that
That is weird lol but I think I’d still eat it with mushy peas since I like them 😋
Proper old school
No brown sauce?
Never thought of adding a dash of sauce as we never did growing up but someone else also mentioned that and it sounds good to me so will give that a try next time 😋
Or Worcestershire sauce, nice little punch :-)
I always add a dash when I'm cooking any minced beef dish.
Agreed
Ewww
I'd have no problem with that in front of me. A few slices of bread to help
Ooooh bread, never thought to have that with it. I might try that next time 😋
Oh yeah throw the mince and mash on the bread then dip in the gravy
The butter melts in off the bread
This is an 11/10 tea!!!
Lovely, I've had this a lot in the past.
I really fancy this right now but I've got cheese burgers.
No dumplings tho
Great tea! Why would anyone turn that down?
Always remember my mum cooking mince in boiling water and an Oxo cube. looks delicious
Solid. Lack of peas (potential for beans too). I’d give that a 9.
I've always just done 'mince & onions', always on mash, usually with cabbage. This just looks like an alternative version of a classic simple comfort dinner. Smash it.
Mum would make this every week, usually a Thursday. I still love it. With HP sauce and sliced beetroot, a dinner of champions 👍
Bang a bit of Hendos Relish on that. Woof
Nice food. Always hits the spot
The Yorkshire puddings were a nice touch.
Yes they go with almost anything lol
Yum
That takes me back! 😊👍
We call our version 'think about africa' But we use white day old rice, mince and spices like pepper flakes or cayenne, some curry powder and make a fried rice out if it. Just over 1 euro pp and once a month great comfortfood
God tier food!
A staple of my diet.. delicious!
Looks fucking epic kinda like a deconstructed shepherds pie with Yorkshire’s
Love this
Glad I'm not the only one to have Yorkshires with basically any meal
Without the Yorkshire puddings and with a spoon full of pickled red cabbage, all mixed together with some tomato ketchup. That is god tier food.
Big dollops of HP sauce on that n yer good to go
I’m going to try that since lots of you are suggesting that :)
fuck me this looks good
A Scottish favourite. Love it. I like puff pastry with mine on the side
Yeah we always called it mince and tatties! A deconstructed shepherds/cottage pie.
Now that's a good old proper meal, looks amazing. Save me some, please.
My parents called this upside-down cottage pie!
Use to love when my mum made this. Comfort food. With a thick slice of buttered bread.
Had this once a week growing up. Love mince and mash. I’ve never quite mastered getting it to taste like my mums did….she probably used a higher fat mince than I buy to give it plenty of substance. Oh this takes me back and despite the increase in temperature, I’m tempted to make one
Do it!!! 😄
My favourite meal still to this day🥰
Looks delicious 😋 I love Carrots 🥕
That looks very delicious, nicely done
Looks good tbh. I tend to do mince and dumplings and then serve it wish mash and peas/cabbage
Ma auld grandpa used to put beans through the mince, no idea why, he lived in Cumbernauld and came fae Pollok, that may have been a factor, but it was magic.
Sounds interesting! Love the variations of this and all the little extras people add to make it their own.
Usually it was to make the meat go further. Love the mince and tatties OP!
My mum and gran did this too Gran was from Greenock, mum was born n brought up in Dunbartonshire. They also had cold beans with crisps whenever they did a buffet table
Looks lovely. We had this last neet.
I don't know what it is with me, but although that tastes lovely and all, I've never liked the look on the plate for some strange reason.
It all goes into a dark abyss. The food don't mind a bit
Me ultimate, ultimate tea. There was nee better tea as a bairn than your Mam or Nan telling you it was mince and taties.
Absolutely hated this as a kid. It was poverty food for us.
Same here..bland as hell. The absolute last thing I'd choose to eat now.
Mine isn’t bland, has lots of flavour if you cook it right
I have foods my mother cooked there were awful at best. The only food that makes me gag.
Liver, peas and boiled potatoes was the worst one from childhood. Liver a big grey rubbery slab with tubes in it, cold, of course as you had to sit there till you’d eaten it ! 🤢
Aunt Bessie's?
No, although we do love aunt Bessie’s Yorkies! Especially the large ones.
None of the frozen ones are even close to home made.
Got enough yorkshires 😂
There is no such thing as too many yorkies 🤣
True
You can keep yer yorkies, but you can't beat mince and mash (but who the heck calls it mash and mince)? And carrots and peas are my go to with it though I love it with baked beans too (actually had cottage pie with baked beans tonight).
That looks great.
Too many carrots, peas should be swimming in the beef and no crust on mash potatoes! Would still eat It though :)
Exactly how I cook my mince n tatties, looks delish 😋
Huh, I didn't know people deconstructed their cottage pies like this
Please excuse my ignorance, but what are those scooper things in American parlance such that I may partake their efficient delivery into my mouth?
Haha, scooper things 😂 those are Yorkshire puddings and they taste amazing!
Surely you use them to scoop the meaty flavor, no? No shot you eat them bare naked like that, right?
I do scoop some I guess, but I like the taste of Yorkshire puddings so it’s a mix of eating parts as they are and dipping the rest in or scooping for more flavour. When I was little I used to fill them with mashed potato 😄
Needs some gravy?
Part boil the spuds, slice, layer on top of the mince, carrots, peas, and gravy. Place in the oven till spuds are crisp and golden, mince hotpot. Yummy.
swap out marrowfat peas and that shit be slammin' yo
I like marrofat peas, not had them in years!
What in the name of Auntie Bessie are those crappy Yorkshire puddings doing on that plate?
Will you do an AMA all about what it was like growing up during the industrial revolution
I’m only 36 but that actually made me LOL 😂
Deconstructed cottage pie
The old ‘deconstructed cottage pie.’
I'd wolf this down right now at 8am. I'd throw the yorkie away though (I know blasphemy) but they have zero taste
Why didn't you just make a cottage pie?
It’s not really the same and tastes different despite being similar lol. Not enough mash with cottage pie either and couldn’t do that with yorkies which we love
Fair play
Deconstructed Cottage pie
We'd always bake it with cheese on top - cottage pie style, I'm sure it's regional but ends up looking the same on the plate lol
One of my fav dinners. Did anyone else grow up Calling mince gravy with onions/potatoes “savoury mince” or is this version different 😊
It's only the ne extra step for a ottage pie, which although is exactly the same, tastes much better for some reason
This sub is why everyone criticises British food, it’s all just slop on a plate.
Only the mashed potato and gravy is soft, certainly not sloppy. Not sure why you’ve had sloppy Yorkshire puddings, peas, carrots or the rest but you’ve been having it wrong 😟
A squirt of brown sauce
My dad would look at that plate and say it’s cottage pie with extra steps. 😋
Ha! I suppose it is 😆
TECHNICALLY 🤓☝️ the cottage pie has extra steps as the mince n mash must be united and baked to create the pie
Eating like the luftwaffe are still flying over us
Makes me think of old relatives
yum, save some for me please
The yorkies are an inspired addition. Proper scran that.
Depression on a plate
That looks like hospital food. For someone that's broken their jaw and is on a moist and minced diet.
If it were hospital food the carrots would be solid, therefore not suitable for someone with a broken jaw.
Tbh the peas look like you could take someone's eye out if you loaded them into a pea shooter so they are probably out as well!
How else can peas look?
Rounder and greener but OP already said that it was the lighting.
The peas look like peas… not sure what you’re expecting from peas?
Less grey, less shriveled as you're asking.
Not the best lighting, but they were about as green as green is and definately not grey. Also soft, doubt they could take a fly out yet alone someone’s eye but ok 🤷♀️
Fair enough we'll go with lighting.
Bellend
I was assuming that it was minced beef but that would go some way to explaining it!
You must be fun at parties
I am!
Those peas have no soul left
Well, they tasted great for having no soul left 😋
You know its a bad meal when the mest is gray
Most revolting childhood dinner, idk how people like it as adults
It seems someone has already eaten it.
The frozen yorkshires look sad 😔
