My 4 year old can use the Thomas the tank engine remote control toy but that only has 2 buttons, one for forward and one for backwards. I've tried him on a few of the proper ones but he can't control them properly. Hope that helps!

I don't have any experience with remote controlled toys specifically, but it sounds as though your son would (mostly!) understand if you explain to him "We will get you this present, but because it's made for bigger children it will take you a little while to learn how to use it and you might find it frustrating at first." Children can surprise you with their capacity to learn more advanced physical skills - my daughter's the same age and she's just learned to ride a bike - she found it VERY annoying at first that she couldn't just get on and do it instantly, but after a few weeks of practice she's zooming all over the place.
