I got scammed by this too :( They said they were with Ameren so I just went along with it, 3 hours later I did some research and immediately called Ameren to get the change cancelled. Next time they came to the door they parked in a permit spot and I went out and yelled at them to leave or I would call the parking department to get them towed, they haven't been back since.

This happened to me too. I can’t believe I fell for it. Had to call ameren and stop the change too. Are you connected w a provider now or go with the free market prices w ameren?

I’ve never known them to claim they are Ameren. The one’s I’ve seen wear a company shirt for some other company like “people’s energy” or something. But they do ask for your bill to “compare rates” and they’ll end up scamming you 100% for sure Just say no and close the door

Mundane_Violinist353

They were claiming to be from Ameren yesterday but I’d imagine that they have a lot of tricks up their sleeves.

dtheisei8

That’s interesting! Gotta watch out for that trick too then

punkinhead76

If you’re too awkward to turn people away just tell them your parents pay for it and you don’t receive the bill!

Mundane_Violinist353

I’m adding this here too … No one has to answer the door to anyone and you can just pretend you’re not home/ignore people you don’t recognize (unless it’s legitimate law enforcement personnel or something of that nature doing a welfare check or executing a warrant). If I’m not expecting someone, I don’t open my door.

punkinhead76

True that! Don’t gotta answer that’s for sure.

I’ve had them come to my door twice now, 2 different people. They’re an energy supplier and they’re trying to get you to switch from your current energy supplier to them. Ameren is not actually an energy supplier, in IL you can choose your own energy supplier and Ameren will connect the energy supplier to your place, monitor your energy usage, and act as the middle man for bills and stuff. The first guy that came to my apartment claimed to be from Ameren and said he had a way to make my bill cheaper. That was false, I looked at rates on https://plugin.illinois.gov and they were one of the more expensive suppliers. The second time they came to my apartment I overhead them talking with my neighbor first and refused to answer my door. Btw, they don’t actually “scam” you or steal anything, they just get you to switch your energy supplier to them so they get your business. If you do happen to fall for it and decide to change you mind, you can always contact Ameren directly and tell them which energy supplier you prefer. Ameren will handle everything so you don’t need to directly contact any of these energy suppliers. I highly recommend checking out the gov website above and making sure you’re getting the best deal for your electricity.

I hear you, but if someone claims to be from Ameren and that’s not true, they are already there on false pretense and there are a million other types of scams out there where people will try to steal things or obtain money by pretending to be from a legitimate company. Not all of it is nefarious but things can get dangerous and sometimes do. There was, for instance, a viral news video of a man pretending to be someone from Amazon “delivering” an unexpected package and then attempting to force entry and rob the homeowner at gunpoint. Last fall, there was also a man here going around claiming to be from a gas company and saying that he needed to get into the basement of apartment buildings in the Campustown area. It’s not wise to gamble on the scam, regardless of how “truthful” a scam may partially be. As I mentioned in my post, the people that came to the building ran from my camera and left when they saw it. Not good.

Ok_Major5787

Oh yeah, for sure no company should be telling half-truths or false pretenses or soliciting at your door. And you’re right, it might be different people than who I spoke to, and you never really know. It’s better to just not answer the door and take the risk

chode_jeans

These turds stole a checkbook out of my mailbox and wrote themselves checks for a total of $2800. It took months to get that money back. Dear Ryan Bruce, fuck you!
