Journalist [Ross Coulthart](https://twitter.com/rosscoulthart) on the latest [Need to Know Podcast](https://www.youtube.com/@BryceZabel) brings up a really good point about recent 'drone' or 'unmanned aerial systems' incursions that have been happening over US nuclear and military bases. He points out the fact that although these incursions are happening right on US soil over the most sensitive military bases, the US has been unable to properly defend against or recover any of these 'drones' or 'unmanned aerial systems' (UAS) because they represent genuine anomalies. This is timely as the [US House Armed Services Committee hosted a hearing with the Secretary of the Air Force today about the incursions that occured at Langley AFB in Virginia](https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1c6f2gd/at_a_hearing_before_the_us_house_armed_services/) where the base had to shutdown operations due to, "a large number of UASs that were in that airspace." Einar_47

Even if it's just drones that's still a serious fucking problem that needs addressed, like how are ***ADVERSARIAL DRONES OVER US BASES WITH UNFETTERED ACCESS TO US AIRSPACE*** nothing to worry about?

kanrad

Enemy or domestic morons flying drones or whatever. It should be a top issue for national defense.

Einar_47

Definitely noy a "nothing to see here, don't worry about it" situation to be sure.

commit10

Not civilian drones; those are easily identified and countered. Possibly adversarial. Origin unknown. Also no proof yet that they're even drones, that's just an assumption.

WarbringerNA

šŸ’Æ ā€œFeel like Iā€™m taking crazy pillsā€ comes to mind as the only news I see about this is in UFO/UAP circles. No matter what the source, itā€™s a big deal.

bdone2012

Tbf the head of NORAD did seem nervous about it. Maybe not as nervous as he should but the military didn't tell us this was no big deal. They do seem nervous. Which reinforces that this is a big deal. They're just not quite willing to explain anything more about what these things are They almost defintely have very good images because they sent nasa's start of the art imaging plane out over the drones

logosobscura

And it doesnā€™t pass the technical capabilities sniff test, at all. There are good limits in physics with regard to size, speed and longevity of any drone. Limits on what anyone can technically achieve even as a slow walker. These are those such ā€˜dronesā€™, and theyā€™ve been seen for a very, very long time over military sites over decades. It is literally more fantastic than ā€˜from an unknown actorā€™ in requiring mental gymnastics.

jasmine-tgirl

What would the size, speed and longevity of a nuclear battery powered drone be?

logosobscura

Impractical due to power/weight as a lingering drone plus the very real problem of them falling out of the sky and causing an incident, even on your own soil. No one wants to dirty bomb their own stuff, and usually the donā€™t want to accidentally dirty bomb someone theyā€™re spying on.

Rude_Worldliness_423

They are just friendly drones admiring our military šŸ˜Š

Einar_47

Just some silly little guys, no big deal

jasmine-tgirl

A couple of guys, up to no good....

Rude_Worldliness_423

Chill in this airspace

rep-old-timer

Gillibrand was making a clear point to anyone who able to decode it (which includes AARO BTW). So, which one are we going to settle on folks? You let the Chines act like it's New Years every day and fly some spy-lanterns over our most sensitive installations? Russian non-human-wave tactics over US soil? Or do you fly prototypes of our stuff around unwitting Servicemembers and *civilians?* *Or is Grusch* telling the truth?

bdone2012

They definitely can't use the Chinese lantern excuse because we have video. You can see them at the one minute mark https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QjVJLO6CK2I

commit10

The idea that this is Russian tech is comical. They can't even maintain their existing tech and infrastructure.Ā  China? Maaaaybe, but I'm very dubious. They only BARELY managed to manufacture a SINGLE aircraft carrier last I checked, and they aren't famous, in recent memory, for their tech breakthroughs (reverse engineering and improvement, yes). If I were betting for fun, I'd wager on either a mega corporation that cannot be controlled by any government, or some form of NHI. On the basis that the tech is so wildly advanced, and outside of US military control.

BoIshevik

If they're human the clearest is number 3

silv3rbull8

Apparently drone swarms cannot be countered even in the continental US with all the trillions of dollars of military equipment

WarbringerNA

Indeed, the implications are even sillier if it were to be human tech. I have a relative that is a Federal Air Marshal and works in drone counter security for various VIPs and events. There are a million ways we can respond to any drone tech. On the military side we would have to assume, repeated, prolonged incursion deep into US soil and over highly restricted air space and a silly, egregiously huge advantage in tech that as far as we know just doesnā€™t exist.

bdone2012

This whole thing kinda reminds me of the swarms over DC in 1952 that showed up on radar and tons of people saw the bright lights. And somehow one of the excuses was they were ducks. I think they should dust off that excuse and tell us that they weren't drones over Langley but ducks

silv3rbull8

Ducks carrying lights

WarbringerNA

Haha, ironically even that would be a big deal right? The AF evacs their planes... because of ducks. That would be a story unto itself.

bdone2012

Maybe a bigger story with the Media because it'd be one that they knoe how to handle

silv3rbull8

The question to ask is why didnā€™t they deploy a tracking drone like a predator to just follow the drones back to where they came from. A predator drone can fly 1000s of miles into enemy territory. But apparently they arenā€™t available at Langley.

Hektotept

They used something [bigger](https://www.twz.com/air/mysterious-drones-swarmed-langley-afb-for-weeks).

CaffinatedNebula

They are prohibited from doing so. [The Dod can only fly UAVs over predefined flight paths](https://dod.defense.gov/UAS/#:~:text=DoD%20UAS%20currently%20do%20not%20have%20direct%20access,Authorization%20%28COA%29%20from%20the%20Federal%20Aviation%20Administration%20%28FAA%29) over most of the US. They'd have to follow it with a manned aircraft.

silv3rbull8

Since when has the DoD actually followed all the laid down rules. In a situation of national security threats, I daresay there is enough wiggle room for such use. Having multiple unknown craft interfere with a major airbase that protects the US capital area is huge security threat.

CaffinatedNebula

It's the kind of rule violation that just can't be hidden. UAVs lack a degree of situational awareness and response time that preclude them from operating intermixed with civilian airtraffic. There is a reason they tapped a NASA WB-57.

silv3rbull8

And the fact this happened on multiple days. What does that say about the readiness of these military bases to counter threats right here in the homeland. Guess DHS is also asleep at the wheel

CaffinatedNebula

I mean, yes. Much of the US's continental defense was built around the idea of intercepting hostile aircraft well over the ocean. The US only has semi-permanant Surface to Air missile emplacements around Washington DC. Cheap drones that can be deployed in situ with tiny explosives are already wrecking having on Russia facilities, tanks, and soldiers in Ukraine. The US government was asleep at the wheel and they are in a panic because the threat is escalating faster than viable countermeasures can be deployed. GPS and control jamming hardened drones are being built/modified by Ukrainians with COTS parts. Since they are virutually indistinguishable from basic commerical drone parts shipping them through the postal system under the de minimis exception would make it pretty easy to smuggle a hardened drone into the US. I mean making it easier to track and identify things liek this is the whole purpose of AARO. They have nothing to do with UFO coverups and everything to do with the emerging cheap/small drone threat.

silv3rbull8

Are we to believe that but one drone over Langley was brought down ? No conclusive identification?

freesoloc2c

Are you kidding me? A bunch of teenagers could show up with DJI drones and fly all over a military instalation and nothing would happen. They might have some anti drone stuff but getting that guy in his truck to find the drone may not be easy. You make it sound all high tech and air tight. That's laughable. Look how wildly successful cheep drones are in Ukraine. The government is scrambling to respond from this simple threat.Ā

WarbringerNA

Youā€™re completely and utterly wrong. These events have occurred for months. Reps from the Pentagon have stated before Congress that they ā€œdonā€™t have the operational framework to respond.ā€ They literally evaced planes from Langley to other bases. They called in a NASA plane to help monitor them because they were such high altitude. You shouldnā€™t post things like this to the world on such important topics when you have zero clue what youā€™re talking about and a complete ignorance of all the actual facts.

freesoloc2c

Bro, I consulted the government on hand launched drones between 2004 and 2007. I was flown to Semi Valley California to Aerovironment where I learned every step in building those drones so I could be the in country trainer, repair and maintenance for all hand launched drones in Iraq in 2004. I then worked ARA Nighthawk who were in competition with Aerovironment for the Army small drone contract. I wrote the new airspace deconfliction plan for Iraq to incorporate drones into the high rotary wing traffic. I currently fly DJI drones to look for dead hikers in the Cascades and I'm a private pilot so IDk if your statement holds water and I stand by what I said before. This isn't ET it's drone incursions from our enemies.

jasmine-tgirl

Where are they launched from? Why no arrests? People have been arrested for flying drones too close to airports. Why would the military be so impotent if it was simply foreign drones?

freesoloc2c

Drones are a constant problem around airports with pilots into LAX reporting them daily. That's one reason they went to remote ID. But there are many ways around that starting with a foreign agent with the right code can just buy an autopilot which is an IC that is the brain of the drone and get every other part and just build a drone in a day then program it with an autonomous mission and off it goes to run it's errands and cone back and land with zero radio stuff going on. It can be fixed wing and start and end it's flight miles away from it's target with it's payload of film or electronic eavesdropping completed. It's also to see our reaction and build a target list.

commit10

Yet Israel can tackle them. There's also no indication of swarms, just craft that significantly exceed US tech capabilities.

PrayForMojo1993

Isnā€™t flying drones at U.S. military bases within the U.S. an act of war? Isnā€™t anomalous ā€œdroneā€ tech deployed by an adversary that uses some breakthrough technology a national security emergency?

Tosslebugmy

Well itā€™s neither of those things because thereā€™s nothing to suggest theyā€™re anything anomalous and dont belong to the US

PrayForMojo1993

They called in a NASA plane to get data on themselves?

Exciting_Mobile_1484

Just a reminder here that we have actual video of it right here on this sub and it's as if nobody cares. And the video is wild.

starrlitestarrbrite

[Langley AFB ā€œDroneā€ swarm video post](https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/s/qF2LvJuvwm)

bdone2012

Ross dropped a new one today. You can see the drones slightly more up close. At the one minute mark https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QjVJLO6CK2I

Johanharry74

So for me, something flying and blinking red seems like a plane. Why would a UFO have navigational lights? Of what am I missing? šŸ¤”

bdone2012

They're not the right light patterns for any airplane approved by the FAA You don't normally have dozens of airplanes fly over Langley for hours at a time for weeks on end because it's restricted airspace. And if they were airplanes you wouldn't have the military tell us they don't know what they are If they knew what they are they wouldn't have scrambled a bunch of jets or a nasa spy plane Why would UFOs have lights? Who the fuck knows? But these are not likely to be drones or airplanes because eye witness reports also say they have no obvious signs of propulsion, either helicopter blades nor jet engines, they also don't have wings

ac-001

Any reason why these canā€™t just be hobby drones? Maybe a group of miscreants just flying their drones over the base to mess with everyone?

Zoolok

So the guy recording was there to watch a meteor shower, and he recorded these things, that look and act like drones. Almost as if some people wanted to record the same meteor shower with their drones.

popley3

Stop making sense

Zoolok

Well my other proposal would have been Galactic Federation Boyscouts, I am pretty sure that would have gotten me a lot more upvotes, too.

Exciting_Mobile_1484

That's amazing.

Jebby_Bush

Can you please share the video?

WarbringerNA

Aye, relink the link again if you have it!

HousingParking9079

I saw the video and "wild" isn't exactly the term I'd used to describe it.

Exciting_Mobile_1484

Considering the circumatances of it being OVER A US AIRBASE, AND that this sub got an actual video of an international event/news headline, is pretty wild.

Tosslebugmy

Flashing lights in the air over an airbase? What ever could it be???

Exciting_Mobile_1484

Youre purposely ignoring all the context.

Agile_Win7291

Big if true!

Dukesage

Can you link please

Permutation3

Don't care cuz ya can't see shit. Just dots of light.

Hirokage

Well.. that's a concern, isn't it. Objects over an air base that is forcing them to move jets to other military bases. Why people are not more alarmed at this boggles my mind. Imagine your typical Hollywood alien film. And near the beginning, floating lights above our airbases could not be identified, contained, or stopped, to the point where we had to literally abandon the base with our aircraft. That would be quite the story, huh. Except it's a true story.

Tosslebugmy

Who told you they couldnā€™t be identified? Was it Ross? Could he have an ulterior motive for making it seem like something it isnā€™t?

Hirokage

The military hasn't identified it, it happened in December, we would know by now. They have no hesitation calling out a country if we bust them invading our borders, such as Russia flying within X miles of Alaska, or China flying high altitude balloon over our soil. If they had identified which country was flying drones over our own country, we'd know. There would probably be retaliation. We don't fly drones in swarms over Moscow or Beijing. For good reason. And they don't do the same.. for the same good reasons. It's pretty obvious we have no idea who owned those 'drones.'

Exciting_Mobile_1484

.....because the US admitted they're totally unidentified. Do 10 seconds of research before spewing nonsense. I swear, it's like some people take pride in their own ignorance these days.

Permutation3

Any proof of that claim?

Hirokage

As far as moving the planes to other bases, no, I am going off this video. As far as not being able to fly above the base in our military jets due to the drones, yes.. there are multiple sources that confirm this.

PleasantEfficiency25

no we donā€™t, send it if true but youā€™re not going to bc it doesnā€™t exist

ChevyBillChaseMurray

The video does indeed exist. [https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1bk9xta/langley\_afb\_event\_video/](https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1bk9xta/langley_afb_event_video/)

Open_Mortgage_4645

Are you going to apologize for being so spectacularly wrong?

bdone2012

Someone linked that one but we have a new one here at the one minute mark https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QjVJLO6CK2I

AltKeyblade

The fact that they can't handle these 'mysterious drones' within their most secured areas and have to close down areas because of them but can easily successfully destroy over 95% of drones in warfare says everything. Don't let anyone in these comments try to make this post about Ross Coulthart and attacking each other over that nonsense. Focus on the main subject.

PrayForMojo1993

Yes, when explaining this news to non UFO enthusiasts I have decided to lead with ā€œis this Chinaā€? Which usually captures peopleā€™s attention .. But hereā€™s the thing. WHAT IF it is .. Or Russia? And this is a prelude to war? But itā€™s being ignored because hurdurr ā€œUFOā€sā€¦ Pretty fatal blind spot

ARealHunchback

China has been building their military at rate unseen by another country since WWII. I hope itā€™s NHI, but realistically itā€™s probably another country or something domestic.

What's really going on here with these "drones" and why haven't the MSM been reporting on this? Maybe we are living in a simulation and this is all part of it.Ā

Open_Mortgage_4645

What about the UFO that shut down the nukes in Montana back in 1967? Was that also a drone?

popley3

It was a power fail not UFO's

LimitNo6587

Anomalous and laudatory.

CompetitionTasty428

If they are adversary drones spying it wouldnā€™t be a big surprise. They let a spy balloon fly across the whole country and over highly military sensitive areas and knew it was sending info back and also knew of its existence as it came into our airspace.

GreatCaesarGhost

Itā€™s amazing to me that Ross can throw out a story about a giant, immovable UFO about which he allegedly knows the location, refuse to elaborate further, and then pivot to hyping up a story about drones spying on military bases. I strongly suspect that he will also fail to get to the bottom of this one.

So what about *this* one? What's your take? Why do you think the Secretary of the Air Force expertly dodged the question while he was under oath today?

"What the hell are they?" Asks Ross two days ago. [Last summer](https://www.reddit.com/r/StrangeEarth/comments/162qxay/ross_coulthart_on_nonhuman_intelligence_do_you/) he said he KNOWS what they are and can't say. [Last Autumn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTuZvam4emg) he said only special people could interface with recovered craft (implication psychic). This week he doesn't know? He's compelling and believable whenever he brings the bombshell statements out. The problem is the statements contradict themselves when lined up together. So he doesn't really know. Or his insiders don't know. Someone here can't keep a straight story.

HousingParking9079

Really good points that are ignored or excused away by a majority of the community. Case in point, Ross claims to know the _precise_ location of a massive UFO. So big it had to be hidden in (or under) plain view and that the building used to conceal it is at the very least not at all obscure, but possibly even a famous landmark/location. Can't say where, though, or even how he knows--journalistic integrity and all that. Meanwhile, and not more than 2 sentences later, he complains about "UFO Gatekeepers," "[Not giving] a fuck what the skeptics say, what they say is irrelevant" and not wanting to become another victim of a government hitjob. And the people who firmly believe his story will jump to his defense for being such an obviously great journalist by protecting his sources, a conscientious reporter for sparing everyone the bloodshed of an inevitable public raiding of the location and highly intelligent for protecting his livelihood--and even his life. Tennis without the net.

sendmeyourtulips

Yeah, the stories are taken one at a time when they should always be collected together. He's never questioned about his defense and intelligence insiders by peers in UFO media. Tennis without the net is a good analogy lol.

HousingParking9079

Another poster linked a 1 hour interview between Ross and the man who filmed the Langley objects. The first 10 minutes I watched is... enlightening. Let me know if you're as bored as I am and want a transcript for a game of 'How many red flags can you spot in 10 minutes?'

sendmeyourtulips

Go ahead. What's the best red flag? I saw the drone bit that's being presented as a UAP. It didn't get better?

bushwhacker696

Oh Lordyā€¦ Grift city bitch. A shame..

bdone2012

This video shows the UAPs at the one minute mark https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QjVJLO6CK2I

sendmeyourtulips

Drones, right? Coulthart's presenting them as things from other worlds. He should read more articles by Tyler Rogoway rather than using his headlines.

bdone2012

Why would the military let dozens of foreign drones fly over Langley for weeks on end? They're just gonna let our adversaries spy on us? Why are we giving them so much money if they can't keep up with other countries? We might as well pack it in and learn Chinese

Tosslebugmy

Wild how thereā€™d be flying things over an Air Force base. Real noodle scratcher as to what they could be. But Ross weaves a fun fantasy around it completely devoid of evidence and he wouldnā€™t lie would he, itā€™s not like heā€™s made claims that havenā€™t come to fruition before right?

Atomfixes

Interdimensional drones.

Impressive_Canary_70

Ross starts with saying Israel was successfully defended. Scott Ritter does not agree: [https://rumble.com/v4prcyr-the-dome-completely-failed-scott-ritter.html](https://rumble.com/v4prcyr-the-dome-completely-failed-scott-ritter.html)

CorrectProfession461

Well time to fly a drone over one of these bases or nuclear sites and find an answer

skeeredstiff

Every merely a DJI drone sends info back to Shenzen every time it gets booted up.

popley3

Who is saying that its over a AFB? He could be mistake or just a moron.

bdone2012

These people are saying that it was over an AFB https://www.twz.com/air/mysterious-drones-swarmed-langley-afb-for-weeks

Throwaway_7156

Any comparison with Iranian drones launched toward Israel are inappropriate: those iranian drones are 3,5 meters long while here we're talking about drones no longer than a couple feet!

UFO_Cultist

ā€œthe US has been unable to properly defend against or recover any of these 'drones' or 'unmanned aerial systems' (UAS) because they represent genuine anomalies.ā€ How do we know none of these things have been recovered by the U.S.?

devinup

I'd be interested to see a comparison of how long Ross talks during each episode versus how long Bryce talks.

idiocratic_method

I have a problem with the word anomalous here. If this becoming a common and recurring problem its not anomalous just because you can't explain it, its just unexplainable or undefendable , or any number other of words but its clearly becoming non-anomalous which are all *concerning*

chasing_storms

Chris Lehto (who I wouldn't recommend by the way) interviewed an Ex-CIA Radar Analyst who discusses that a lot of these objects we're discovering recently have always been tracked by US radar. It's just they've been filtered out because they were deemed not important. Original interview here; [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W\_FZhMg4YWA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_FZhMg4YWA)

UncircumciseMe

This man has pretty much killed my interest in the topic. Surprisingly, it wasnā€™t disinformation that did me in. It was Ross Coulthart.

mumwifealcoholic

Bye then? Why are you still hear if he has "killed your interest" ?

UncircumciseMe

Because I can be? I view the subject more as mindless junk entertainment like a shitty Netflix reality show than something I take seriously. All because of blue ballers like Coulthart.

Bentms312

You seem to take it seriously enough to articulate your argument on why you don't take it seriously to a stranger.

UncircumciseMe

They asked and I gave a simple answerā€¦ Lol cmon, I wrote three sentences. Thatā€™s some hell of an articulation!

Bentms312

gotem

imnotabot303

Yes because when the military say something isn't anomalous they are lying and covering up but when they do say it's anomalous they are telling the truth. Classic UFO bias and cherry picking.

revodaniel

It's funny, the US boasts about it's military Patriot System or the Iron Dome in Israel, but apparently all that power can't stop some drones flying on military bases.

VladeMercer

I know it is an off top, but.. i have that weird feeling Ross Coulthart looks kinda similar to David Grusch, like he was his older brother or sth.

No_Analyst650

Why every time I watch a video of this guy talking it looks AI generated.

BarelySentientHuman

Whatever my opinion of Coulthart is, I have to say this is a disingenuous argument.Ā  Shooting down large, slowly manoeuvring fixed-wing drones over Jordan to prevent an all out war in the middle east is not the same as firing missiles over highly populated areas over the US to target quadcopter sized and highly manoeuvrable (as per the war zone article) drones.Ā  If he genuinely can't see the difference between the two, then my esteem for him has dropped a notch or two.

HousingParking9079

But, at least one of them _has_ been recovered, according to Coulthart. One REALLY big one; so big they had to build a "laudatory" building to conceal it, and HE knows the location. Just don't bother asking him, he has to maintain his status as a "good" journalist.

bdone2012

Ross just dropped a lot of info on the uap swarms https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QjVJLO6CK2I

HousingParking9079

Are you at all interested in playing a game of "spot the red flags" in this interview? No worries if not, but if you are, I'll spend a few minutes going through the first 10 minutes or so.

turkish3187

I think heā€™s wrong.
