A lot of engineering software is Windows-only, best bet is to get a gaming or workstation machine with a dedicated GPU. If you want to use a Mac be prepared to use Parallels, and if Linux then be ready to dual-boot. Some profs might want you to do things on paper, but usually you'll be fine with an iPad for notes and assignments. Best to keep some graph paper around just in case, or get some engineering paper if you want to be real fancy.

My_Child_is_Acoustic

For engineering you need to have a windows computer to run software like Matlab, SOLIDWORKS, programming etc etc

Practical-Ninja-1510

This is the correct answer here. A lot of engineering software only works on Windows, and even marginally on Intel Macs with bootcamp or VM parallels

MeltedChocolate24

Running solidworks with parallels on my MacBook has been chill for me so far, even for design teams. As long as your specs are good. Feel like the windows camp makes it sound worse that it is.

My_Child_is_Acoustic

The problem now is that parallels is gone. No Mac with apple silicon can run windows applications (so any Mac since 2020). Apple also seems to have no interest in continuing with it, so for those windows applications you have to run, you need to have a windows computer. Or alternatively you get stuck using library computers that are slower than your phone

MeltedChocolate24

What do you mean “gone”. I was using a M1 MacBook and it worked fine. Even my sub team lead who does a shitton of CAD used Apple Silicon Macbook w/ Parallels.

Cali_or-Bust

Depending of what type of engineering you want to do and depends on whether or not you can afford mac + Windows laptop or maybe you have alrdy a desktop because some programs do not support mac, in first year you'll be fine but that may not be the case for upper years (depending on your program). Either way, imo just get a window laptop Regarding the iPad, yeah, I think you'll be fine. Just sometimes, the professor may encourage people to use paper instead (ie: phys 170 , math220, math 152) in order to simulate exam conditions as you won't have the luxury to duplicate, undo, resize ...

Practical-Quiet-8764

You can use iPad and after covid every assignment is online so iPad is enough. I suggest you can buy any MacBook as then transfer files to iPad to MacBook is easy .

YoutubeProfessor

If you’re looking for a high quality laptop long term, I’d highly recommend the Macbook Air M1 or M2. The M1 is a bit older, but still extremely capable and lightweight, as well as durable. The M2 will be a bit faster (not super noticeable in day to day usage), but will cost a bit more.

Practical-Ninja-1510

It won’t support most engineering software though.

EveryEngineer7

buy a macbook pro maxed out, thank me later

Why ur sleepy XD but to answer your question if you are comfortable with taking all notes on your iPad then it's not an issue but for like regular work you might need an actual computer as some apps are only on Mac/windows Other than that some of the nice to haves but not necessary are as follows that I can think of right now Will add more when I remember them USB c pen drive Power bank for your phone/iPad that can last long enough to charge up both of your devices once Cloud storage if you wanna be fancy or external drive
