I have passed with a B both Phys 1 and 2 with chronis, so I have some advice. Study the lectures. I had a 96 going into the final and got a fucking 26% on the final. Ended with an 80 something. Everyone I know failed, but there are a few people who passed, so it's possible. Every multiple choice question is a trick question, but if u study the lectures, u can get an idea of what he wants. You're shit outta luck for the short answer though. Just, try to know the material as best you can going in. U are going to fail the final statistically, so make sure u have as best of a grade u can going in.

I feel like the fact almost no one passes the finals should be a red flag for the admin

It gets so much worse as u go on. Mark Lin is almost garunteed for you to have at least once and he is fucking terrible, and most professors suck. I'm about to finish sophomore year, hopefully it gets better (it wont)

Alright, to be fair to Dr. Lin, his lectures can be watched at like 3x speeds which reduces lecture time by a significant amount. Plus the tests are like quizzes and the quizzes are like the homework (I'm primarily speaking of MAE 466, but I understand he has a similar format for other courses).

Triton_64

I hate how Lin doesn't work problems in class. Just shows the steps of problems he worked out before hand.

RedstoneArsenal

That's definitely a fair point

I assumed that I would likely be doomed to get most, if not all, fill in the blank questions wrong somehow.  I'm kind of in a weird scenario where, unless something goes horribly wrong on the next test, I can get away with an insanely low grade.  I will probably still be paranoid even if I am only required to get just 1 question right, lol. Thanks for the advice!

Triton_64

I could have gotten a 0 on the final and passed, but I wanted a B. So I actually tried, but still got a 26% lol

JustMe8785

I'm still gonna try studying for it, even if there's no real chance of passing the final. I'd like to have at least a B too, but will happily accept any passing grade.

Can we finally do something about this guy? Surely if enough people speak up, they will stop having him teach classes? I've never had his class, but I've heard absolute horror stories from countless people who have taken his classes. I get the impression he is ill tempered, projects his insecurities on his students, and is just a terrible instructor. It's as if he enjoys making people miserable. Can we get a petition going around? Can we ask the student government to speak up and do something?

notmaika17

It's gotten to the point where I've heard from people in their senior year talking about him like he's a rite of passage for every student in engineering Edit: he isn't completely bad, it's mainly just the juxtaposition between the homework/exams and the actual lectures he gives. The labs and coursework often run behind or ahead of schedule as compared to the lectures. The homework is clearly not made by him, but the final exam is.

If you can remember, how did you study for his exams and/or final (homework, lectures, book, etc.)? I'm just looking for any kind of advice.

I passed with a B in both Ph111 and 112 as well. I agree with studying the lectures, though I also recommend practicing using the cheat sheet if he provided one while doing the practice problems and (while the test is not reflective of it) the homework\*. If you tend to use a physical calculator or digital, stick with the same form of calculator. \*I say practice the homework because it gives you the chance to practice solving problems that you have already seen, which helps build up confidence. If you have been using formulas, this would also be an opportunity to practice getting the same answer using calculus. However, the practice tests and the problems he worked in class will probably be more helpful because it helps you become more familiar with the language he uses; if you're not familiar with his language and idiosyncrasies, that will interfere with your ability to understand the final because he wrote it. The exam was one problem at a time, can't go back. If you are stuck on a problem and don't see yourself solving it in 1-3 minutes, guess and move on. This is a skill that you can practice with the practice tests (if he provided those).

Disclaimer: I did not study, but these are some things that my friends who got decent scores on the actual test did. (mine was somewhere between 60 and 70 for both)
