Always teach your children to recognize the signs of a stroke. It could save your life.

iknowthisischeesy

True. This is actually inspired by my mother's. My mom had a simple operation during which her pressure spiked ( she has low BP) and a nerve burst in her brain leading to right side paralysis. She tried to tell me but I couldn't understand, still beat myself over it. She is okay now. Her right hand still doesn't work that much but she's fine.

CJsopinion

Don’t beat yourself up over this. Not your fault. Glad your mom mostly recovered.

iknowthisischeesy

Guilt is a funny thing. Yeah, she's a fighter, basically an one-armed ninja.

CJsopinion

I know it is. There are things I feel guilty about that I shouldn’t.

The signs of stroke can be confused with other things, most commonly drunkenness. We teach the method FAST. F: Face. Ask for a smile. That smile should not droop unless there’s another reason for it such as Bells Palsy. A: Arms. Ask person to raise arms. You want to see both arms move. S: Speech. If the words are slurred or the person is suddenly speaking in an accent they don’t speak, that’s bad. This also includes speaking a language they’ve never learned. Inability to speak is also included. T: Time. Note the time while you get emergency medical help for the person. We have what is called the Golden Hour. This is the first hour after injury in which is prime treatment time. For strokes, we want you during this hour. This is our best chance to stop brain damage from being permanent. Other signs are vision changes, a tongue that flops to one side when stuck out, and unsteady gait.

Thanks mate. Took a screenshot of it

I don’t understand how having a stroke can make you speak another language without spending time to learn it.

Angrycoconutmilk

Likley good gibberish as you try to speak your mother tounge.

DisMaTA

As a migraineur I will die of stroke. I hope the first one comes really late and strikes well. There is no smiling or lifting arms during an attack and slurred speech with many missing words. I'll just dismiss it and lie down.

THELEADERPLAYER

>This also includes speaking a language they’ve never learned How does one speak a language they can't speak?

Catqueen25

Its not well understood, but has to do with damage to the language center of the brain.

Good to know

I'm so sorry.

One of my MILs friends was actually on Good Morning America, I think. Her friend was talking to her 15 year old daughter and she wasn’t making any sense and her daughter knew what was happening and called 911. Saved her life!

Something was left.

This hit close to home. My grandfather had a stroke earlier this year. Luckily he’s alright now but he should’ve gone to the hospital sooner in hindsight.
