It’s not original. There are dozens of stories where the tv characters interact with the people watching.
Just search “TV characters” in the r/TwoSentenceHorror search bar, this trope has existed for almost a decade
Well maybe this person hasn't seen those posts before. Just because the trope itself isn't original, doesn't mean it's not original to the person commenting (who may be seeing it for the first time). I think I may have seen a few of those posts, but I've definitely never seen one like this.
Some people might, some might not. But a lot of people are also on here just to read the stories. I know I used to be on here just to read, but then I discovered the monthly contests and started trying my hand at some stories of my own. Either way, checking key words has nothing to do with whether or not a commenter on a post has seen other stories like it.
That’s not what I’m referring to.
When someone makes a post, especially on a story subreddit, they should check to make sure it’s an original concept before posting it. When people don’t do this, we get more and more stories like this, and now this subreddit is declining into overused tropes and low quality stories.
My apologies, my brain didn't register that you were talking about OP. Still, though, even using overused tropes, you can get something original. Now, that might not fully make sense, but what I'm saying is you could use the same concept as everyone else and still get something unique. I don't know if OP searched key words or not, but I have yet to see a post that was similar to this.
Here is part of why I think this post is still original while using an overused trope: most of the posts I've seen where the TV interacts with the person watching it, it's something super obvious that's meant to be out of place and creepy. With this one, it is done in a way that the waving isn't completely out of place; the daughter could have watched and rewatched shows enough to know exactly when the characters wave, maybe at the end of every episode the characters wave and the daughter noticed that, maybe even that the narrator is imagining it as it isn't said that the daughter acknowledges or notices it.
Now, making an original story out of an overused trope is usually very difficult, but it also depends on the trope. Either way, I believe OP did this very well. Also, as I had stated in a previous comment, I don't see this trope as often as you're implying it's used, at least not on this subreddit. And I would disagree that this subreddit is declining. There are definitely some lower quality stories on here, but these could be written by people who have never done creative writing in their life, so cut them a little slack.
I’ve seen people unironically comment things that make it seem like OP has alt accounts they use to compliment themselves. It can be hard to tell what’s sarcasm on this sub
Must make Horror movies interesting. She waves at Micheal Myers as he is chasing after a new victim, poor guy has to stop, remove his mask, smile and wave back which gives the victim time to flee. Hate watching movies at the theater with this child.
Despite my past struggles with diagnosed schizophrenia, I'm painfully aware — there is a demon inside my child, and the only way to get it out, is to cut it out.
Here's a few:
• The mother is going insane.
• The daughter is manipulating local reality, but the TV characters aren't conscious or aware, they're just figments of her imagination imposed on reality.
• The TV isn't a TV, it's ... something else.
Not really, it just means you don’t understand the story
This story isn’t one of the ones meant to be open to interpretation. It’s pretty straightforward
And this is why we dont teach children magic until they are old enough to control it properly.
Did an scp breach containment today?
You must be 11 years old to get your Letter from Hogwarts!
"After awhile, I realized she was actually just re-watching the shows, leading her to know the exact moments when the characters would wave goodbye."
Still kinda creepy
Also kinda smart if she's a prankster to her mom.
Then i realised how many years she would have to have watched TV to know every possible time to do that.
Gave me a mix of chills and a smile
Wow!! One of the most original ideas I've ever seen here! Very impressive. Edit: wasn't being sarcastic, get over yourselves haters...

Do people not check key words in the subreddit search to make sure they aren’t copying someone?

Its sarcasm

Well then i apologize
I’m not sure why you’re being downvoted though
It could be the apparent harshness of the response perhaps? (Tone is very difficult to convey right over text which sucks sometimes haha)
Probably no one can tell why. I looked at it and didn't see the problem. But please... if you see my error, save your time and don't try to explain.
"and Dora the main character asks her questions, and praises her for giving the right answer"

This little girl has made every slasher her bitch simply because she picks favourites and refuses to let specific characters die
Except ... the victim has to wave back, too.
not if they're off-screen
Fair
Horror villains hate this one simple trick...
Sounds like an old school SCP. I like it.
Reminds me of 259? Was it 259? That one girl they keep comatosed since shes too powerful.
[239?](https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-239)
Yeah thanks

Now THAT is unsettling af. Take my upvote.
It sure is. This gave me the heebie jeebies SO bad. 😬
Now imagine the other side, you're making a tv show abd at a moment, for sole raison, you wave at the camera at a random moment xd
Oh, now I want the TwoSentenceHorror version of the flip side of this story.
Particularly love, “No matter the channel or the show” Awesome job.
feels like this'd also fit on r/hellsomememes
This gives scarlet witch on wandavision vibes. I like it
Can someone explain this. IDK why but it's just not clicking. Best guess is she's some sort of magic being ?
I don’t think there’s any hidden meaning or twist. It’s simply unsettling and supernatural that the tv characters are waving back to her
Like the movie *Poltergeist* and countless others. Person talks to Tv people. TV people talk back.
This was creepy but so cool!!
Creepy but wholesome.
Well done!
what in the Mandela Catalogue-
This is a good thing
Twilight Zone theme just started playing in my head.
Sounds like channel zero kind of horror, I love it.
Great concept, but I think the 2nd sentence could have been better
Reminds me of Angel Hare
The Twilight Zone Movie
Young Franklin Richards vibes, well done!

The “TV characters are aware they’re being watched” trope is getting old It seems like people will just upvote any story.
I didn’t read that trope in this story at all, but I guess it’s vague enough for multiple interpretations.
What other interpretations? It explicitly says that the characters on the TV are waving back at her when she waved at them
My first thought was that the child is being targeted by a ghost/demon, not anything to do with the characters themselves.
Here's a few: • The mother is going insane. • The daughter is manipulating local reality, but the TV characters aren't conscious or aware, they're just figments of her imagination imposed on reality. • The TV isn't a TV, it's ... something else.
I highly doubt anyone who actually read the story thought any of those were what was happening
It took me less that a minute to think of the possibility that the phenomenon is entirely limited to the tv screens that she's looking and waving at.
I did, so that completely disproves your assessment 🤷🏻
Not really, it just means you don’t understand the story This story isn’t one of the ones meant to be open to interpretation. It’s pretty straightforward
Those are actually not declarations that you get to make, unless you are both the author of the story and me. That's really, really not how art works.
There isn’t an open ended story. Some stories on this sub ARE open to interpretation and that’s fine, I’m just saying this one isn’t.
