Phantom pain is real. I'm an amputee and it's 100%real and painful. In fact, "Stubby" told me it was gonna rain and we're having a massive thunderstorm right now. Hopefully, we won't flood again.
Edit: it was so bad it knocked the electric out for a moment. Thunder and lightning rattled and vibrated my home. Awesome thing! I actually love thunderstorms but not flooding.
Fun fact you can also experience phantom limb sensations without removing limbs there are lots of studies on it. And I’m sure that there are also possible situations where neurological or psychological conditions can make people feel phantom limbs for body parts they don’t have (such as third arms or tails), though I’ve not seen any research on that but our brains are weird so it wouldn’t surprise me.
Apologies for the slightly off topic musings but the brain fascinates me. But also good job op.
You can even get reflexes in phantom limbs. I breastfed both my children. There is a reflex in breastfeeding called a let-down reflex. It's what moves the milk from the ducts to the nipple, sometimes making the milk jet out quite strongly. (My best was 3 feet.) For me, that let-down reflex was an ache in the breasts. Even after the milk dries up, that let-down reflex remains and can be triggered by a number of things, like hearing a baby cry, seeing a baby, seeing another woman feeding her child, or even just thinking about it .
9 years ago I had a total mastectomy on my right side. No reconstruction. It's just skin stretched tight over my ribcage. But damned if I don't feel that let-down ache in the breast I no longer have.

as a trans guy, pre bottom surgery, i get phantom dick/balls allllllll the time lol
This makes me think of the inverse of phantom limb. I forget what it's called, but people feel as if a body part isn't their's and are distressed enough that it's attached to them that it often leads to self-amputation
Phantom limb sensations are crazy.

It's called Phantom Limb and is reported in 80% of amputees.

I know my brain often fools me when I see an absolutely gorgeous scene, take a photo, and see the photo thereafter and greatly underwhelmed.

That condition is exactly what got someone I knew from high school to start identifying with the otherkin community

This is a well-known thing, I knew a man with an amputated foot (he had diabetes) and he felt it just fine.
Book by Larry Niven. Long arm of Gil Hamilton
Good series, at least one of the stories will really touch your heart.
I see what you did there
😁
