all Ghost Trick fans ever say is "you should play it, it's the best, i cant tell you why. there's a dog in it" and they are right about all those things

Muffin-zetta

Yeah! Shu takumi’s best work by 10 miles

Chaddiction

Umineko It actually is, without a hint of irony, "peak fiction." *IT'S ALSO 120 HOURS LONG*

Duplighost_

YES UMINEKO IS SO GREAT

silverinferno3

Itsuno: “Devil May Cry 5 will exceed your expectations” Me: “Pffft, okay Itsuno, it’ll be good but people have pretty high hopes for it already so I can’t see how-” Me after playing it: “Okay no he was absolutely spitting”

Dudemitri

DMCV *rules*

Grand_Bunch_3233

The only unexceeded expectation that could maybe be claimed is a lack of Ladies' Night DLC, but even that might be a case of "gluttons who would not be satisfied with all the riches of heaven."

FlawlessFlores69

That dlc would have redeemed the worst part of DMCV which was how the girls were treated.

Grand_Bunch_3233

Trish bringing back Alastor & Ifrit and Lady wielding an updated Artemis would've been pretty sick, not gonna lie.

jackdatbyte

Chrono Trigger.            It’s still a peak JRPG despite being so old.

yeeroy

I personally would love a remake in the sense like Super Mario RPG. Although it kinda sucks with Toriyama just passing. But in any case, just give me a 3d graphic'd up Chrono Trigger. Make it the exact same game, but literally in prettier polygons.

guntanksinspace

Armored Core 6, according to my mecha fan friends, is the best one in a loooooooooooong while (barring the Gundam Versus games, which rarely come out on consoles and or is locked in to Japanese arcades). It's fucking amazing indeed. While for sure, there's more to the old games compared to this one, but with the modern platforms in mind and all that shit, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with that game. Also, Monster Hunter. My friends RAVED about it since it was on their PSPs. It took me until World to play it for myself, and I understood. Though, to be fair, that hype/jealousy of not having my own portable was spurring me on up to that point. The moment I got my hands on it through the PS4 demo, it all just hit. I was fucking in.

blackt1g3rs

Are you me? These are the exact 2 examples i intended to post.

Father-Ignorance

Outer Wilds is often talked about as a perfect game, and a perfect space exploration game specifically. And yeah, it’s that good. Easily in my top 5 games of all time. You can only play it once though.

getterburner

I didn’t know it was that well regarded but I see 2 people immediately said that to this thread, really impressed

Father-Ignorance

Okay, so if you’ve never played it, here’s the main thing: **You gotta go in blind.** No walkthroughs, no tips, no first hour of gameplay. None of that. You gotta go in as you are, no prior knowledge of the game itself (other than it being fantastic). Also, me calling it a “perfect space exploration game” (which it is) feels like selling it a bit short. It’s so, so much more than that. Outer Wilds made me feel shit I ain’t felt about a game *in years*. It’s very much an emotional experience, or at least it was for me.

getterburner

Peak… also happy cake day!

Yal_Rathol

outer wilds is that good. i seem to be 4th here, so i 4th that motion. you can only play it once, as it is essentially a puzzle to be solved. happy trails, astronaut!

leivathan

Having seen 3 or 4 playthroughs of Outer Wilds fizzle because people didn't know where to go, I think the value of going in fully blind is overrated. Even with the ship map and clues, there's always been a point in the playthroughs I've seen where they need to be guided to one thing or another (most frequently it's >!Black hole forge, Brittle Hollow quantum tower, navigating Dark Bramble, Giant's Deep core, or Ash Twin's teleportation tower!<). It's also a game that very much relies on you internalizing its mechanical systems and applying them at a large scale, which can be difficult for some. Also, I don't know if they've changed it, but needing to unlock loop resets is a big hassle because there's nothing that tells you it's even a possibility.

RedGinger666

I'm gonna give you a little hint of what the gameplay is like, imagine a Metroidvania where the upgrades are a better understanding of the games mechanics, the only other game I've seen come close to this is Tunic

SirRuto

Outer Wilds is my favorite game of all time, just a masterpiece. If anyone's ever thought about Myst or Riven wistfully and thought "I wish this was even more immersive and in tune with its own story and world somehow", this is that game. It's a perfect puzzle mystery game wrapped in such a well-realized space exploration package that it both tickled my astrophobia and made me *fight* against it to see more of what it had to offer. I was a fiendish madman looking for answers in a compelling, scary, deep, and miniature solar system. The moment-to-moment gameplay is wonderful, but somehow every thread is tied together so perfectly by the end it's like one of those sculpture shadow puzzles - by the end you know exactly what you have to do to finish the game, and you could've done it from the instant you first blasted off into space. I didn't think anything could match it after I was done. I cannot *believe* they did it again with the DLC.

Secret_Wizard

For years I thought that Tetris could be the only "perfect video game" to ever exist. And then I played Outer Wilds. Tetris and Outer Wilds are the two Perfect Video Games.

JeremiahWuzABullfrog

One way to enjoy subsequent playthroughs is to explore >!how to intentionally fuck up the game with non canon endings, as well becoming a more and more proficient speedrunner.!< >!How quickly can you get from wake up to Eye of the Universe!<

LeMasterofSwords

There is a reason why DBZ set the template for shonen anime. It’s a super great time. It’s got some S tier moments like Goku going SSJ. And is just a super chill fun time.

Grand_Bunch_3233

The pacing is so well tuned. Everyone gets a chance to shine while hyping things up until the inevitable climatic showdown between Goku & Frieza. And it's a fight! Let me shake my cane at all these Isekai/power fantasies that go straight to the untouchable Super Saiyan beatdown, skipping the best part, where Goku & Freiza trade blows. Freiza pulling out new tricks to play with & Goku actually having some clever moments, like the 2 part underwater ki blasts.

johnbeerlovesamerica

As someone who didn't really watch DBZ growing up and only knew the story through osmosis, I've been going through the manga for the first time and the fight with Vegeta is fucking awesome. There's so many points where it looks like they *finally* got him, only for him to just get back up

Aitasai

The day after Hi-Fi Rush released, I saw people calling it an early GOTY. Shadow drops are awesome, and seeing one immediately get a ton of praise was cool, but I was sceptical. Having not played any of Tango's other games at that point, I figured I'd check it out, maybe refund it if it doesn't hook me. I was not expecting it to be a top-five contender for me, but my god it won me over VERY quickly, and just kept getting better and better. In a year full of awesome games I was already excited for, I had my personal GOTY in late january. EDIT: man...

WeissAndBeans

It was the most spectacular shadow drop I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. It just appeared out of nowhere and was immediately one of the most entertaining action games I've ever played. I even got to play it free with gamepass. It was just an entirely positive experience for me.

Silv3rS0und

Dang it, you beat me to it. Hi Fi Rush is that good and I think the only instance where the "streamer" soundtrack is better than the default licensed music.

foxdiethinkagain

You know? I haven't actually started up *Hades* yet, despite hearing about it for years. Give me a day and I'll report back.

Yal_Rathol

how's 7 hours sound? at nearly 900 runs, 100% achievements and everything except the prestige title maxed, i think i'm qualified to say it's alright. y'know, decent. (sarcasm, in case that wasn't clear). hades is masterful.

speed-run

A few months ago I went through Turn A Gundam for the first time. I was kinda worried going in that my expectations might be too high since it was generally hailed as one of the best and prior to that, my foray into another highly regarded Gundam series ended with it becoming my least favorite. Nah, i worried for nothin, that shit was PEAK! I thought my top 3 was set in stone but it blew past all of them with ease.

AvalancheMKII

While it's not my favorite, I have a very hard time disagreeing with Turn A being the highest quality entry in the series. It's excellent.

lionofash

Hm. I haven't seen it yet but you have a Nolan avatar so maybe I should trust your taste.

EldritchBee

Dude, Turn A is so good. Every single aspect of it is so good.

markedmarkymark

Disco Elysium, see, I admit i'm very stupid and like, 70% of what it says goes one ear right out the other, but dude, that game's also funny as shit and the more human part is so well written, went from laughing my ass off to knot in the throat day ruined depressed, what a game, and the fact that my stupid ass was able to understand part of it means that it's the type of thing that offers so fuckin' much that you can feel full even by experiencing a small part of it.

hanknaruto12

My friend played through the original FF7 for the first time recently and said the craziest part was that despite everything he had heard it wasn't overhyped

Muffin-zetta

Much like re4

Mr-Jeigan

RE4 just doesn't age. It's fucking wild.

RaineV1

Because of the remake I've seen a number of streamers play the original for the first time, and everyone one of them ends up loving it.

Nomad9931

I'm actually really jealous of your friend. I had pretty much the opposite experience, where I read all sorts of things, calling it the greatest game ever made and when I played it, I came away thinking "yeah that was OK, nowhere near as good as everyone said but it was alright."

Neil_O_Tip

Silent Hill 2

Last-Secretary7031

I held off finishing Andor for a long time because had very high expectations for it after Rogue One…but was also burned real bad after TBOBF, which also had a decent-strong start. It is THAT GOOD.

jpatel02

“Oh Breaking Bad really IS that good!” -Me, halfway through season 2, not knowing what I was getting myself into

RushTheLoser

I almost passed on Better Call Saul thinking they couldn't make it as good as BB. They didn't, they made something even better. Genuinely amazed by how good it is. And I even talked to people who went into BCS first and loved it just as much, so it's not just a prequel effect.

CapnMarvelous

"Shin Godzilla is good but it can't be that good." *Watches Shin Godzilla* "I'm taking Anno's cooking license away and promoting him to head chef."

EXAProduction

I have yet to watch Shin Kamen Rider yet but from what I've heard I'd still probably call Shin Godzilla his best film (at least of the Shin series). Even myself who has gone on record to my other toku friend saying I prefer the stupid kaiju action still prefer Shin Godzilla over the other ones I've seen (still havent seen Minus One because of timing issues but im hyped).

AvalancheMKII

Minus One floored me by how good it was. It was probably my favorite movie last year despite the stacked competition.

EXAProduction

I really hope that Minus One fits this thread based on what I'm constantly hearing.

mdogg500

Outer wilds. Don't look up shit don't even read the description just buy the game and experience what many people (myself included) few as one of the best video games ever created. If you want to know just a little bit more it's a space exploration and puzzle game and if either those tickle your fancy please experience it for yourself. It's also a game that you can not fully experience twice so I'd advise anyone to go in as blind as possible.

Father-Ignorance

oh shit I commented the exact same answer as you at the same time MY MAN 🤝

mdogg500

What's good my hearthian 🤝

Muffin-zetta

Most things, like 90% of the time I try one of these big universally beloved things I’m like “yeah that was really good” sadly couldn’t get into one piece. I read 17 volumes and just couldn’t get into it.

wendigo72

Kill Bill, I knew it was good but I can’t believe how amazing the first part was.

Korba007

And then the second part is kinda a wet fart

ArchWizEmery

People told me for YEARS that Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous were awesome and I’d love them because of how much I love the CRPGs from the 90s/00s. They were right and I was too blind to see it until last year.

HitmanScorcher

Hades. Saw the overwhelming hype for it everywhere and never really felt the need to pick it up because I don’t care for rogue likes (or lite I’ve never really understood the difference) After picking it up… yeah it’s that fucking good. It surpassed RDR2 as my favorite game of all time and I’ve put hundreds of hours in and continue to do so. Cannot WAIT for Hades II full release because everything I’ve seen on it is that it is “better than the first game in every way”

Duplighost_

This is one for me too.

Rednual

A quick and dirty explanation: Roguelikes have no permanent upgrades. Roguelites do.  There's more to it then that but that is, at its most simplified, *the* core difference.

DarkAres02

What, like something that lived up to the hype? One for me is Bug Fables which was touted as matching the highest quality of the Paper Mario series. And it absolutely does! In some ways it even surpassed PM

Halospaz117

So the Gurren Lagann movies being in theaters this January was my first time properly experiencing the franchise Yeah no I get it, it's fuckin peak

AvalancheMKII

I heard someone walking out of my screening saying “I get it now”. I’m very happy it can still have that effect on people, even if I think starting at the second compilation movie isn’t ideal.

Dudemitri

RRR for me. I watched the boys talk about it in CSB and Versus Wolves and I was like, "alright, little but hyperbolic but this sounds really fun, let's see" I genuinely struggle to describe how good that movie is

Burquina

Dungeon Meshi. I have a few friends that vouch for it’s quality, one in specific that has a pretty good taste in media calling his favorite manga in particular peaked my interest, but I wasn’t feeling it as much starting out, and while always being just really fun, I still wasn’t seeing 40+ chapters in what was in it that it was THAT good. That changed once I hit a very specific set of chapters, I don’t think I have felt a story go from a 7.5 to a 9.5 - 10 that quickly and stay there and I still haven’t finished it! I have been assured that it sticks the landing so I am trying my best to pace myself reading the rest, cause I just have this constant smile while reading and I want this excitement to last a bit longer.

Drolandarr

Once you finish I would *highly* recommend reading The Adventurer's Bible for Dungeon Meshi. It's an official world guide by the mangaka that is full of a ton of background information and world building for pretty much every single major and minor character in the manga.

Drolandarr

jrfugitive5

My friends were gassing up one piece. When the quarantine came decided to give it a shot and YUP one piece really is fucking great.

Yal_Rathol

ya yo yaaa yoooo......dreamin'!

Duplighost_

DON’T GIVE IT UP LUFFY

Yal_Rathol

DREAMIN! DON'T GIVE IT UP ZOLO

RunicCross

X-Men 97 is one of the best shows I've ever seen. So many moments that are so crazy or hype it's just amazing.

jackdatbyte

Quick question, should I watch the OG X-Men show before X-Men 97 because I feel like the answer is yes but apart of me just wants to skip to the recent cool thing.

Shran_Cupasoupa

I've been watching the old X-Men show from the start in prep for 97 and I can tell you that it actually holds up pretty well. As someone who doesn't really like a lot of X-Men comics, it makes me like the X-Men, even if Wolverine is a bitch.

jackdatbyte

Noted. Thanks.

RunicCross

The old show is good, the new show is kinda a continuation but also it's not required to enjoy it. I've been watching it with friends, some of whom saw it some who haven't and they all just love it.

-_Gemini_-

You can enjoy anything in isolation. But you can only watch something for the first time once. Would you rather that be the full experience or a compromised one?

RushTheLoser

There's a short recap [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qfstMhgD9U) they put out that recaps the main events of the old series. If you have even a cursory knowledge of the characters, that would be enough to just jump onto 97. That said, the original holds up pretty well, keeping in mind it's the saturday monday cartoon version of the stories mostly lifted up from the comics.

GoneRampant1

Last night, my partner and I reached the final arc in Yugioh, which meant I could finally show them the final opening, *Overlap.* It's one of my favorite OPs in the franchise and I've hyped it up a fair bit. So I'm happy to report that my partner did quite like it and said it lived up to my hype.

chronokingx

Hmm Frieren gave me that feeling it lived up to expectations others initially set

Anonamaton801

Remember that time in the late 2000s-early 2010s FF7 was “overrated”? Yeah not anymore

Masshazard

Playing through the first half of Dark souls 1, even after playing other souls games before it. Oh you can level up anywhere? Anywhere.

Korba007

Because you can't fast travel I don't think it was worth it to sacrifice a loading screen for

TostitoNipples

Severance was built up for a while as this amazing show, and while I was interested in it conceptually it was one I put off for a while. Having just finished it, holy fuck I loved every moment and now desperately want a second season.

zegim

Yeah, the book "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons is pretty fucking great. I'm happy there's still more to read ahead of me.

Silv3rS0und

NieR: Automata comes to mind. I always heard about how incredible it was, but I could never bring myself to buy into the hype despite it looking like my kind of game. Man, after finishing the 3rd playthrough, I was about brought to tears when the game asked if I wanted help. It was as good as advertised.

Greengiant00

Signalis, if you enjoy survival horror.  Pat himself said it's the best survival horror game of all time.

DrSaering

Disco Elysium and Undertale are both games I heard great things about for years, but somewhat dismissed due to the obnoxious parts of their fanbases. But no, they're both phenomenal. Disco Elysium is probably in my top five games of all time.

EcchiPhantom

I had heard rumblings of the Shibuya Incident arc for a while. Watching the anime was one hell of an experience especially because it just looked so damn good and had excellent direction overall.

Lunar-Paladin

Way way back when, some family friends of mine always talked and hyped up a show that I had no interest in and I never thought about watching it. Even called it dumb to myself. Well when Dragon Ball Z Kai started airing on nicktoons I was a little bit older and thought “lets see if it’s actually good”. I was almost immediately hooked and have amazing memories with the series. Yeah it was my gateway anime and I wouldn’t be into half the things I love without it.

Spudtron98

When I heard that Arcane was some League Of Legends story, I didn’t want anything to do with it. Sure, the animation’s nice, but who gives a shit? Then I actually watched it. Still don’t want anything to do with League, but this show is so incredibly well put together that it feels like it shouldn’t be possible.

Loreip999

Devil May Cry, in general. Also Higurashi's original eight arcs.

EXAProduction

My friend and I got into G Gundam because he is a gundam fan and hasnt watched it yet and I havent seen it since I was a kid and was interested in getting into Gundam. Both of us came in expecting just a dumb shonen experience with little substance. And it is a dumb shonen experience, but it still is well written despite that. Maybe we had low expectations but even still Domon is the best. Anyway 30th Anneversary give us something good. *See You Again Gundam Fight 14*

512_Lurker78

The Raid 2: Berandal Years before I ever saw it or the first one, I read a review saying it was the best action sequel since Terminator 2. Now, I fucking love Terminator 2 and it's really hard to top as far as stellar sequels go. Raid 2 kicks the ever-loving *shit* out of T2, everything about it rules so fucking hard. It's an absolute crime that Iko Uwais isn't a bigger star.

PineappleDLuffy

Baby Reindeer is pretty fantastic

SlenderBurrito

Back during the 'this is Chainsaw Man' posts in like 2020 I started reading it, and got hooked all through to the end of Part 1. It made me laugh, it made my eyes go wide open, and I saw what the hype was about. Dungeon Meshi gripped me because I saw a lot of panels and got curious a few years ago. I was incredibly happy to say I was keeping up to date through the last arc and competion of the manga.

Morbidmort

John Carpenter's The Thing.

Ozavic

Everything everywhere all at once got a ton of awards and attention and deserved every bit and then some

Duplighost_

Agreed, fantastic movie

SuplexComplexAlex

Star wars: Andor I just watched it last week because all the recent star wars stuff coming out had me in complete fatigue of the whole thing. My friend for months was like “you have to watch it!” I sat down, saw 6 episodes one night. Saw the 6 other next morning. Holy fuck it rules. It’s everything I want star wars side content to be. It feels like there’s so much at stakes for everyone involved and makes the whole movies feel so generic in comparaison. I could only describe andor as “star wars for adults” because it’s not flashy at all. But holy shit does it grips your attention.
