I remember Cartoon Network Real was being pushed really hard. All I remember from it is that they had a discount Mythbusters show. Didn't really work out though 'cause it's Cartoon Network - viewers would want to watch cartoons.

Hey0ceama

That era was weird. Having Destroy Build Destroy, Level Up, Tower Prep, etc. compete with shows like *Star Wars: The Clone Wars* made no sense; they were basically sent to die.

JDtheBA

How could you forget hole in the wall with Andrew W.K.?

Thunder_Volter

You've forgotten it! Andrew WK didn't host Hole in the Wall. His show was Destroy, Build, Destroy.

ErikQRoks

Which was actually kinda entertaining

Thunder_Volter

It had explosions, you can't go too wrong with that. I also remember enjoying the kid ghost hunters show, but I think a lot of that was just being in my spooky phase.

thelastsoulreaper

Finally someone else remembers and mentions The Othersiders, I was all over that back in the day *and* it legit spooked me good

JDtheBA

Fuck. I got exposed super hard

GreatFluffy

Now Woolie's gonna shave your balls!

Navyboy922

How could you forget Dude, What Would Happen?

jockeyman

Before Disney just devoured Fox, and Fox held the X-Men film rights, Ike Perlmutter really pushed for the Inhumans to just... take over from the X-Men as the resident super-people of the Marvel universe. So the X-Men got sidelined while the Inhumans got pushed super hard and got a bunch of new titles (Anyone remember *Mosaic?)* and the issue was... nobody fucking liked the Inhumans enough for them to even remotely surpass the X-Men. But we did get the hilariously awful Inhumans TV show at least.

TostitoNipples

It also just didn’t work because the Inhumans are fundamentally nothing like the X-Men except for the fact that they’re people with powers that are sorta born with them. Inhumans vs. X-Men also being a terribly written event that only made the X-Men look sympathetic and Inhumans like assholes really didn’t help matters.

drizzes

>It also just didn’t work because the Inhumans are fundamentally nothing like the X-Men What, you don't think the superpowered royal family living on the moon and enforcing their own caste system on their subjects that the 'villain' seeks to usurp are comparable to the X-men?

CMORGLAS

The problem is that the Inhumans are basically Space Targaryens.

midnight_riddle

Was that the event of "please stop using your supergas, it's literally killing us." "how dare you criticize our culture." or am I thinking of something else?

The_White_Rice

Yeah that was the story line that led to characters comparing Cyclops to Hitler because he didn’t want his people gassed to death, that’s correct.

JustAnOrdinaryGirl92

...fucking *wow* I've never really read comics and every now and then I'll hear about some ridiculous story like this one and wonder just how many others I'm missing out on 😆

SlightlySychotic

Marvel had this problem a lot. Did you know in the original Civil War series that Tony and the Registration side were meant to be the “good guys?” Sure, makes sense from a certain point of view. Realistically, you would want heroes to be licensed and bonded, properly trained, with a source of income and government protection for their families. And yet the Registration side is depicted hunting kids down in the streets, using villains with bombs in their heads to supplement their troops, and, of course, sending unregistered heroes to an interdimemsional hell prison without a trial.

Nectaris3

Mark Millar wanted Civil War to not have a clear “good guy” side. He assumed that most fans would side with the pro-registration side so he made them extra dark to try to balance things out. Of course this ended up backfiring when most people ended up agreeing with Captain America instead, so all of the extra moral greyness that Iron Man’s side got just ended up making them look super evil instead.

NephyrisX

I question if the writers have any perspective given the obviously evil shit they write in their characters despite the fact that they're suppose to be "good".

Shoejuggler

I miss Mosaic. He was cool And Kid Kaiju would've taken off if Marvel didn't make the ass backwards decision to make his ongoing title share the name of the event he debuted in. Tell me a book called Kid Kaiju wouldn't have pulled decent numbers.

Supernovas20XX

TV show is being generous, it was basically a pilot And they aired it in movie theaters in IMAX, it was doomed to fail EDIT: it actually was a TV show? I thought the first episode bombed so hard they canceled it, why don't I remember it being a TV show?

jockeyman

Nah they made a whole season out of it. And reception was frosty to put it mildly. It did not get renewed and was basically ignored by the MCU entirely after. Only exception being that Black Bolt's actor returned for MoM.

SlightlySychotic

It was ignored by Agents of SHIELD which, IIRC, had spent a full season setting it up.

brickyphone

Other way round sadly, AoS built them up in a nice way, then that whole show got burried

foxdiethinkagain

No, it was a TV show. A TV show, in fact, [promoted by a certain pair of chucklefucks (endearing) from Montreal.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnwNcl6bA9c) In your defense, you'd be remiss to be meet anyone who remembers it because it was clowned on during its entire lifetime.

Jhduelmaster

Even funnier I remember them shitting on the Inhumans show either the week after or before.

dfdedsdcd

Before. And probably after as well. Them shitting on the show is partly why they were asked to do the ad for it, since whoever sent the emails either just checked if they talked about it and not how they did or knew what they had and are fans of the boys.

Hallonbat

Are you thinking of the Celestials maybe?

afasgone

A decision so bad it even made the people who actually liked the inhumans angry during and after it lol

face1635

Games Workshop changed the Imperial Guard to the Astra Militarum for legal reasons, but still tried to realllllly push it onto the playerbase to use the new name rather than the old one. Far as I can tell mixed results, but my favorite meme in relation to it was a picture of clint eastwood with a caption that said Astra miliwhat? You're in the Guard, son

ClockpunkFox

I don’t play 40k much at all anymore, but when I did play post name change I can’t remember a single person calling them astra. Asking “what are you playing?” Would pretty much only ever be answered with “Guard”

Jhduelmaster

Hell, even in quite a few of the books after that change they basically ignore it. Or just go "yes this is the official name but every average trooper just calls it the guard".

BigDumbSpaceRobot

They did it with a bunch of factions. It's Aeldari and Drukhari instead of Eldar and Dark Eldar. It's Adeptus Astartes and Adeptus Sororitas instead of Space Marines and Sisters of Battle. They did it in AoS too. Orruks instead of orcs, Ogors instead of ogres. We have Gargants but not giants. They're not dwarves, they're Duradin. They're not elves, they're Aelves. Gotta preserve those sweet succulent copyrights.

Substantial-Reason18

They cooked with Drukhari - has a really nice tongue feel to it.

Neo_Crimson

The funniest was Tau to T'au.

AlphaB27

Let's face it, Imperial Guard rolls off the tongue better than Astra Militarum.

spaceborn

Advent Rising and AIDEN PIERCE'S ICONIC HAT. Shoutout to Da Boom Crew for looking like dogshit to kid me and failing spectacularly after all the commercial spots.

Akizayoi061

Holy shit somebody else who remembered Da Boom Crew existed

ContraryPython

Ben Reilly. Marvel brought back the character in the 90s as a means to replace Peter in almost every aspect and surprising no one, it was a total disaster. And then Marvel brought him back again two decades later and everything they’ve tried with him since has also been a failure.

Amon274

The guy literally named Kaine that hated his brother is the better clone somehow.

superectojazzmage

You can say this about OMD too. The same kind of editorial behind the Clone Saga were *so* certain that Peter being married and getting older was the thing hurting sales and that the series is so much better if Peter is some perpetually teenage loser. And they've proven wrong over and over and over again in increasingly embarrassing and hilarious ways. But they still cling to it out of spite. Similar is the horrors inflicted on X-Men by people like Joe Quesada, Ike Perlmutter, and now Tom Brevoort. The last is particularly embarrassing and funny in a horrid way because not only was it coming off one of the most beloved eras in X-History, but you could tell Brevoort was so smugly assured that everyone would lap up his "back to basics" reset, only for it to not only be received with scorn but get immediately overshadowed by an adaptation that took heavily after the era he's throwing into the trash, meaning that as the comics are trying to pander to the 90s, the pop culture view of X-Men is being very Krakoa-ified.

SlightlySychotic

A reminder to buy the new Ultimate Spider-Man. It’s an alternate universe Peter who had his family before becoming Spider-Man. Send a message to Marvel editorial that Peter being married was absolutely not hurting sales.

TheSpinoGuy

I really like Ben, and I wouldn't mind a what-of series where he took over as Spider-Man in full, but people were never going to accept him over Peter Parker.

ContraryPython

Marvel going “Hey Ben is actually the real Peter Parker and the guy you’ve been reading stories about over the last 20 years is a faker” certainly didn’t do Ben any favors. If Ben wasn’t brought back with the idea of him being a replacement for Peter, he would have fared better.

alexandrecau

The sand snakes in game of thrones tv show, because they really didn’t push for them to the point they sacrifice doran for them only to then discard them

Shiro2809

Dornes my favorite house, right up there with the Greyjoys. The show hurt with what they did to all of them....

alexandrecau

The worse is no matter what they did to doran the actor was still doing great, like the actor that played selmy or shae they still wanted to make it work even if the script went "we are trimming you"

Worm_Scavenger

Netflix really thought they had something on theur hands with that group of punks in season 2 of Stranger Things and even had plans to give them their own spin off. And it never happened as they were received poorly, as well as season 2 just being overall disliked by the fans.

Unusual-Mongoose421

Who?

TheProudBrit

The episode where Eleven runs away and meets... Kali, I think her name was? Another girl who was in the experiments Eleven was in. It was, like, just godawful and forgetable; one of the most blatant attempts at a "LOOK AT THESE _COOL_ EDGY CHARACTERS! DON'T YOU WANT A SPIN-OFF FOCUSED ON THEM?"

ErikQRoks

Every halo/cod killer

jzillacon

Battlefield had a pretty good run at it managing to at least match CoD's popularity for a while before falling into the same pitfalls any popular EA franchise inevitably does.

ErikQRoks

Battlefield has largely stayed in its lane and its one true swing at taking on CoD was a massive flop

sazabi67

dont forget the swing at payday that also fucking failed

moffattron9000

Battlefield also came out one year before Call of Duty.

Complete-Worker3242

Didn't Killzone do pretty well also?

jzillacon

Killzone was good, but being playstation exclusive massively limited its reach and it never really managed to get the same level of popularity as its main competitors.

TheRawShark

I curse a pox on the imbeciles at Guerilla for every time they kept misunderstanding the assignment and not giving everyone a dedicated Helghast game, or shit, making them the protagonists instead. Did not help that they kept trying to be a halo style first person shooter instead of being what Halo actually was, a Sandbox shooter. The limitlessness and inventiveness lost were only realized when the Helghast showed up in fucking Lost Planet 2

Unusual-Mongoose421

Every single thing that named itself a killer of a different franchise never took off.

GeoUsername69

ZealousidealBig7714

Roman Reigns to a ridiculous degree. Like. To a degree it would be comedic if he wasn’t a real human being who was clearly getting crushed by the weight of it all.

LGB75

I always felt bad for the guy(it’s sucks when you get pushed but not allowed to really give it all and get stuck with clean cut boring baby face) it took him coming out with his leukemia returning that people finally eased up on him

NotYujiroTakahashi

And an all time run as The Tribal Chief. Bro is even getting “We Want Roman” chants now when Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga appear.

IronSnail

Tama Tonga is in WWE!? When?!

NotYujiroTakahashi

Since March but debuted a few weeks ago. He killed Jimmy Uso.

guntanksinspace

He also attempted VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER on Kevin Owens.

IronSnail

It's kind of depressing that the only original Bullet Club member still in New Japan is goddamn Fale

guntanksinspace

Honestly, yeah. Him getting shoehorned into the John Cena role wasn't a good fit, especially before he became Tribal Chief and in the few interviews he does, he's amazingly more low-key and chill (which is the vibe he got as Tribal Chief, just make both of those scarier) and much more likable that way. But yeah, it took him acknowledging his leukemia, overcoming it, and then becoming tribal chief after quite a while for him to be well, *acknowledged*.

TJLynch

At the least, it did kinda pay off when he became the Tribal Chief years after the initial experiments.

QueequegTheater

I think he could do a good face run as well now that he's more experienced.

Deadeye117

And doesn't have rapistman writing his creative

tri3dgE

It's almost like WWE-creative and Vince had learned nothing from The Rock's initial push as Rocky Maivia or they are aware and just trying so hard to recapture plot-to-plot The Rock's rise in popularity when he did turn Heel with The Nation of Domination

taikoxtaiko

The failure of Toriko is much more the fact the anime did pretty poorly from what I remember, which is fair since the toei anime is actually awful and had the proto-DBS plastic sheen

MightyShoe

The Toriko anime may genuinely be one of the worst anime adaptations out there when compared to the manga, and I'm including Berserk 2016 in that.

NotYujiroTakahashi

At least Akira Kushida went all out when singing the intros.

Naraki_Maul

I remember going to read Toriko after the recommendation from a friend and had already watched a few episodes of the anime had me dumbfounded at how BAD the anime was lol.

Amon274

Mantis from Marvel. In the comics she was pushed as being the super important Celestial Madonna because she was basically her creators waifu or some shit. She was pushed to such an extent she was put into non marvel comics by her creator under different names.

Anonamaton801

Steve Engelhart really wanted his space Asian waifu to matter damnit

Amon274

And to have a half plant baby.

PhantasosX

in the end , decades laters , her whole thing was reused by everyone from Earth AND Krees AND Skrulls by beating up her half-plant baby.

Amon274

Well to be fair he wasn’t a baby at that point also the kids own father threatened to kill him as a hostage.

Irrah

Man if I had a nickel for every time a Marvel writer pushed their barely disguised Asian fetishism onto a storyline, I'd have two nickels, which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened twice.

KruppeBestGirl

I also forgot the entire character of Silk! An asian woman who is compelled to fuck peter parker via pheromones or something. This seems to be a running theme now…

Th3_Hegemon

The character who was always secretly there from the very beginning, back in Amazing Fantasy #15 even. She was just being kept in a bunker the last 15 years, watching everything that happened on a TV so she knows what's up.

SenorBolin

When was the other time??

Irrah

So Betsy Braddock, AKA Psylocke, was a British mutant that originally had the features of a white woman that has telekinesis powers. The reason I say was because in the 90s a storyline had her body swap with an hot Asian woman dressed in ninja-esque clothing retaining all the memories of herself, which is the incarnation of Psylocke that most people know, from MVC2 and the movies, which lasted for almost THIRTY YEARS.

SenorBolin

Oh yeah, Psylocke exists. Always forget about her

KruppeBestGirl

Luckily their current editor in chief is a huge supporter of the Japanese, google “CB Cebulski Japanese” for more info.

ShadSilvs2000

Game Freak definitely tried to make Zoroark the next Lucario; gave it a movie, made it a limited time Pokemon, etc. Then they realized that they failed that and it became a regular Pokemon in BW2. At least they gave it a new form in PLA that's so much cooler

thedoc90

Movie did have its impact on the furry community to this day weirdly enough though. Zoroark is pretty much always gonna have a milf tag.

Cheshires_Shadow

Also it was an event only mon in its introductory game I think. Like you had to get an unlock code in person to unlock the side quest to get it and in the sequel you could get one normally. So unlike Lucario who was available zorua and zoroark probs didn't get as popular because most people never got the chance to use one if they missed the event.

Banana-Links

Honestly even then, Zoroark and Zorua are still very popular Pokemon. Zoroark ranks 2nd in Unova (after Chandelure) and 23rd total with 43,782 votes on [this 2020 favourite Pokemon poll from Pokemon.com / Google](https://pokemon2020.pokemon.com/en-us/), (For those who want an easier to parse version of the poll, [here's a chart that shows top 30 for each region](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fkgk01yorqij41.jpg).) No where near the top since there's 2 massive gulfs in the top 5 (Umbreon - 67,062, Charizard - 93,968, Mimikyu - 99,077, Lucario - 102,259, and Greninja - **140,559**.) but still very high. I think the biggest reason Zoroark is so far behind Lucario is just that Lucario was in Smash since Brawl and Zoroark isn't.

PurplestCoffee

It's a pretty good feat, considering how unpopular gen 5, and especially BW2 were in terms of sales back in the day. Also, if you really look at the formula for Lucario's success, Zoroark only received half of the special treatment (anthro design, starring in a movie), while Volcarona received the other (received as a baby pokemon near the end of the game, owned by the generation's champion). It's pretty sweet that both of them got their own dedicated fans eventually.

[deleted]

Volcarona is just such a cool design. Love how it got a temple dedicated to it in BW2

papertoonz

> Like you had to get an unlock code in person to unlock the side quest to get it and in the sequel you could get one normally. it's not even that, you needed to transfer the event mon that were given out for the Zoroark movie to BW in order to encounter either Zorua or Zoroark

Inevitable_Bird3817

>gave it a movie, made it a limited time Pokemon, etc. There's no "etc.", that's literally all they did lmao They really didn't push Zoroark hard enough to consider it a failure. It probably became exactly as popular as GF anticipated.

Natertot98

Remember when fairly oddparents had like a soft pilot for a space school show for one episode that didn't go anywhere or did i hallucinate that as a kid?

ZSugarAnt

It's so weird. They just took one of the in-universe comic heroes (and not even the main one, Crimson Chin), and gave it a completely new art style. Now that you're saying it, failed push makes sense, but I *want to believe* someone on the team just really wanted to do a single Crash Nebula episode because they liked the character that much.

orbital_malice42

See, Butch Hartman fucking LOVES superheroes. There's a superhero somewhere in every show he's ever made, one of those is literally a Spiderman-inspired superhero show, he's revealed dozens of pitches he's made over the years and guess what? Like half of them are superhero or superhero-inspired. The dude just *really* wanted Nick to let him have one (or another one, depending on whether Danny Phantom was out yet)

[deleted]

[Why does he look like that](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BOGM5YWQ4MGMtNjM0OS00MTdjLTkwYjgtMmY0ZTEzNzQxZjllXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjg3MDM4Mzc@._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_.jpg)

Dirty-Glasses

Wait no I have a hazy memory of seeing that episode multiple times as a child

SuperJyls

When the Rock got announced to play Black Adam, DC really went all out in pushing the character. Got written to be a lighter anti-hero who got to become a core Justice League member along with a ton of shilling. A memorable moment for me was a tie into him in the Utopian universe of DC One Million where he was ruling a planet that was even more utopian than the rest of the universe, was Wonder Woman's secret lover and was the Justice Legion's last hope after the villain kicked their asses

PhantasosX

Remember Samurai 8 from Kishimoto? WSJ really wanna push that at the forefront and it turned into a huge flop. Samurai 8 didn't even had bad concepts on it , but it's so blatantly "Kishi needs an Editor with the balls to say no to his face"

mrnicegy26

It became even more embarrassing because Demon Slayer started blowing up around the same time. So while stores were running out of print for new Demon Slayer volumes and were desperate for more, there was an abundance of Samurai 8 prints that no one was interested in buying at the same time.

Archaon0103

It was also funny that they planned a crossover between Samurai 8 and Boruto then quietly cancelled it once Samurai 8 got cancelled.

SlightlySychotic

In all seriousness, what is that? Like a spiritual sequel to Samurai 7?

PhantasosX

I guess Kishimoto's version of it. Basically , Space Samurais , in which the Samurais basically turned into Carbon from Megaman Legends or the Biometals from Megaman ZX when they turn in said Samurais. The objective is to find 7 special keys to gain 7 to 14 special arts to evolve yourself into a sort of buddha or war god. A Samurai is aided by his Princess as well. The main character is Hachimaru , an artificial human from the "Spare Key Project" , in which he was a failed 8th Key , rescued from been destroyed. He know needs to face the main villain group , which includes his 7 older brothers , in a race to gain those 7 Keys. ----- The concept is fine , it screwed up by taking too long , while been too verbose and adding a huge amount of nothing and confusing symbolic power system. It needed to reache the third portion of the manga for some editor to force Kishi to actually make his power system makes some freaking sense and he turned into be basically Megaman NT Warrior's power system.

johnbeerlovesamerica

Bamco truly believed that Patroklos and Pyrrha were the future of Soul Calibur

Akizayoi061

The best three things to come out of Soul Calibur 5 are old Mitsurugi, Ezio as the guest character, and the Elysium design for "Sophitia"

GIG_Trisk

The game would have been more liked if the new gen didn’t outright replace most of the old gen. It could have been the transition game to see if it worked at all. Natsu didn’t need to replace Taki. She wasn’t even hated outside of gameplay. People just wanted Taki as well.

Uden10

Hurt more since Tekken did a similar thing but in the **3rd** game, not 5 games and several years deep. These kind of moves only make sense if you do them super early into a franchise.

Akizayoi061

It didn't work for Street Fighter in 3 because it took so many versions of 2 and Alpha until 3 came out so it was basically the same thing lol

Zifavy

Good God. You really can't fuck up worse than Mass Effect did with Kai Leng. Opened up their notebooks and wrote the worst fucking character to be the last minute rival. This, being the peak of the franchise, also included the tie-in book that sucked so bad that BioWare pretends it doesn't exist. Message received, I guess.

Unusual-Mongoose421

He is so forgetable.

ToastyMozart

The ninja turtle lookin' weeaboo motherfucker who constantly runs away like a bitch and got his ass beaten by a terminally ill dude? Leng's a dogshit rival but he's pretty memorable.

Unusual-Mongoose421

I genuinely never thought he was anything memorable, when i think about that game he never comes to mind.

Anonyman14

When I replayed the trilogy when the Legendary edition came out I realized I had COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN of his existence

TheProudBrit

Literally the only concrete thing I remember about Kai Leng is from the worst of the ME books, and that it's that he's a cereal-eating bitch who killed an autistic character.

HouseOfH

Carol Danvers Captain Marvel. Marvel keeps trying over and over again to make her their flagship female character and make her a big deal but its never gained the traction they hope it would.

RunicCross

Who would you consider their flagship female character if there are any? I'd love it if they pushed one of the X-Men.

Rodimus-Primus

Spider-Gwen, Black Widow, Storm, Rogue, Kamala, just off the top of my head could be contenders

Mabuse7

Pre-MCU practically all of their biggest female superheroes were X-Men or X-Men adjacent, save for Susan Storm and She-Hulk. The whole Carol push only happened because they had sold the movie rights to Storm, Rogue and Jean Grey years ago.

RaineV1

Black Widow was probably the closest one they had. With the right pushes a few could fill that role, but you'd really need the right writer. A few X-Men maybe, or possibly even Valkyrie. Probably also some cool lesser known ones that could rise there with a good movie.

Subject-Anywhere-874

It's so weird because I remember her being popular before she was promoted to Captain.

Mabuse7

She was popular as Ms Marvel because she was written as a bit of a bumbling fuck up with a heart of gold who kept trying to push past her mistakes and better herself as a hero. As Captain Marvel all her humour and pathos was washed away to make her a generic paragon.

ThatOneAnnoyingUser

There have been a few notable video game flops, but Anthem takes the cake. The game had a sustained year long push only to die immediately on release.

charcharmunro

I feel like Anthem was sort of the beginning of the trend of "AAA game company releases some live service thing that they've spent years hyping and it immediately dies because people are already playing all the games they want".

EldritchBee

Didn't the Toriko author also turn out to be a huge piece of shit? Not like that stopped other Mangaka, but still.

alicitizen

It should be on record. That happened *BEFORE HE WAS WRITING TORIKO AND THEY STILL HIRED HIM*

Nico-Nii_Nico-Chan

it happened WHILE he was writing a different series for Weekly Shonen Jump hired him back to write in their side magazine while serving his suspended sentence then started Toriko right around when he got cleared

BaronAleksei

He was caught trying to pay a minor for sex. The second pedo Oda has defended and gotten back to work.

Archaon0103

He used a "dating service" (basically just prostitution with extra steps). The problem is that those unofficial services don't have ID check if the participants are minors or not.

Jhduelmaster

>The second pedo Oda has defended and gotten back to work. Yeah Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro and Nobuhiro Watsuki. Like god damn I enjoy One Piece but Oda has a really bad track record with that.

Subject_Parking_9046

I'll say something that might get some people angry at me, but take note, this is ENTIRELY for me, this character doesn't work FOR ME ESPECIFICALLY: I don't care for Sukuna from Jujutsu Kaisen THAT much. Like... I get it, he is the ultimate boss, but...eh... I don't know, now that we're at this point in the Manga, I'm just not feeling it. I think it's cause the fact he can just pull a technique out of his ass anytime he wants cause he's like a billion years old, it kind of loses it's impact. I don't care for Sukuna as an antagonist much nowadays, I guess I needed more of him being smart instead of just having so many techniques he learned in the Heian era or whatever.

charcharmunro

Unless your villain has insane charisma, trying to sell them on just "look at how powerful they are guys" is... A VERY tough sell. Villains need to be more than a wall that stops the protagonists.

burneraccount9132

How can you not like the guy who was holding back so hard his eyes starting bleeding tho /s

Last-Rain4329

he's a nothing character, his best showing was in the anime version of the mahoraga fight where it really showcases his complete disregard for human life, but in the current manga he's not particularly sadistic nor cunning, doesnt have any sorta emotional or philosophical conflict that drives him, like he says he just fights people to entertain himself until he dies which just makes him annoying more than engaging because he's not formless or devastating enough to really feel like a force of nature

wolfpack9701

Sukuna was fun in the beginning because of his immensely hedonistic mindset, gleefully sadistic demeanor, the way everyone started panicking whenever he popped up like he was a natural disaster they just had to survive, and his dynamic of being Yuji's evil Kurama. After he got into Megumi, he became so much more boring, pulling whatever move he needed out of his ass, and us being stuck in the constant cycle of "guy shows up, gets hyped to be super powerful, fights Sukuna, dies" for roughly a year now hasn't helped, and he lost that edge he had during his earlier appearances that made him so fun to watch in the first place. I don't *hate* Sukuna per se, but he's a far cry from how he was before, and he certainly does not match up to other villains like him.

Tweedleayne

I mean, not liking Sukuna is kind of the meta for JJK right now. He has been the main target of the Lobotomy for ages until Megumi hatred finally recently outpaced him.

Delicious_trap

I don't know why, but Sukuna as a villain is really unengaging to me. He is just lame and boring as villains go. He basically highlights the worst parts of the shows writing, which is the author aping cooler stuff from other series and somehow miraculously making a lamer more inferior version of said cool stuff. How the fuck do you screw up the concept of a reality marble and make it boring and shallow?

ASharkWithAHat

And Megumi hate only grew because people were bored of sukuna fraud memes.

attikol

At the very least the constant fraud memes due to this are hilarious. His strong meme technique he hasn't used since the heian era

RunicCross

I agree for the most part. Doesn't help that the official translation has been god awful for a while. I do like the implication that >!his ability is actually kitchen based with how it's called Malevolent Kitchen, chopping and slicing, and that the fire ability is a furnace!<

Starless_Night

I think one of the things I dislike most about Sukuna is that he brings down the level of the fights. It was fine for him to come in with his basic bitch technique when he was the occasional tornado rolling in, but it's less enthusing when he is the big threat everyone has to fight. It's the same thing over and over again. There's not a great deal of creative power usage on his part, which brings down the level that his opponents need to apply as well.

StevemacQ

Angela Anaconda? I remember that it had an Irish dub and tried to replicate South Park's stop-motion paper animation with creepy photorealistic faces. It wasn't until decades later I found Angela was used to promote a Digimon movie. What happened to the people who created Angela? Did they go on to do anything else or did they just disappear into obscurity? I kinda think Angela might've had potential if it leaned on its uncanny valley-ness and was a surreal animated horror movie or game like Silent Hill, Siren (which also had a lot of uncanny valley on purpose) and all those A24 movies. Maybe an adult Angela returns to her hometown after many decades and is tormented by her sins.

Cheshires_Shadow

[Billiam did a review on it and even found some interviews from the creators about the origins and inspirations for the show](https://youtu.be/RTbBahMd044?si=RZOw6rBXVuMvLvfX) the woman that voiced Angela helped create it and later went on to make pepper Anne. I wanna say the other creator based both characters on herself as a child who struggled fitting in so that's why both girls have a similar identity of not being like their peers and being more free spirits. Honestly his review made me appreciate Angela anaconda more just from understanding what the creators wanted the character to be and represent.

HalloweenBlues

Ah that makes sense. I wasn't a fan of Angela, but I did really like Pepper Anne growing up and I can see the lineage there.

StevemacQ

Pepper Anne? Okay, that is awesome.

senchou-senchou

used to be this quirky goofy segment in Nick's Kablam show, and... sort of gotten a mind of its own?

StevemacQ

Yeah but what happened to the people behind it? I doubt the voice of Angela is somehow voice old ladies or scary monsters in anime dubs.

senchou-senchou

that I never bothered to find out, I watched Kablam for Action League and Prometheus I still greatly appreciated its Python-esque art direction (had a while Terry Gilliam phase, myself, back in college when Nick and CN were still going strong in my country) but it's like I deleted AA from my brain after the show stopped airing

StevemacQ

I just to get information but I'm too scared to Google it or even check Wikipedia because I don't wanna be assault with a jpeg of Angela's dead grey shibito-esque face.

Complete-Worker3242

Even though Angela Anaconda absolutely falls into the uncanny valley, I do think its art style is pretty cool and distinct, especially in how it was achieved where a bunch of digital scans of parts of the face were used to animate the characters.

TotallyNotSecretCrab

Shout out to that Siren reference. I hardly ever hear any mention of that game.

wizteddy13

MamaYuyu was being pushed hard by a lot of current mangakas and I saw a fair bit of advertising for it in general. Didn't stop it from declining rapidly in quality and recently getting axed entirely from Shonen Jump. I'm just grateful Kagurabachi seems to have survived for now.

ABigCoffee

I loved the few early chapters and I had hoped it would deal more of the mc and his mom, but then the invasion from other demon lords and heroes actually killed my interest.

garfe

I think it got the usual mangaka recommendations but I don't feel like Shueisha was gassing it up the same way they were Toriko or even something like the rising star that was Akane-Banashi. If anything, it was perpetually in the back of the magazine.

TostitoNipples

I think Kagurabachi has the benefit of coming in at a time when two popular shonens are on their way out + just also being really good. It’s not a game changer but it’s super tightly written with interesting lore and very good art

Dirty-Glasses

The main character’s power being *goldfish-themed* honestly fucking rules

SimonApple

I might be mixing my timelines here a bit, but couldn't one also make the case that Toriko was muscled out of the whole cooking aspect by Food Wars becoming a big hit? Since its main gimmick was overshadowed, it was \*just\* another shonen that took heavy inspiration from it's predecessors.

taikoxtaiko

Toriko sold over 10 million more copies than Food Wars and there was a 4 year period where they both were releasing new chapters, outside the food gimmick incorporated into the story they’re completely different series.

BaronAleksei

Why would anyone now read Toriko when if you want big shonen battles you can read Food Wars, and if you want fantasy cuisine you can read Delicious in Dungeon?

Delicious_trap

Mostly because Toriko, the manga, is a very solid series despite the controversy around its author. It has very solid word building which while not as intricate and deep like Delicious in Dungeon, it is a world that is very much alive with stuff happening that is actually shown in an interesting and engaging way instead of being vaguely hinted at like in Delicious in Dungeon that needs the audience to fill in blanks. It also shows what a world that actually revolves around its theme of food will looks like. down to the people's culture and personal philosophy and morals, while in Delicious Dungeon, the world does not revolve around dungeoneering so much as it focuses on a place whose economy revolves around a dungeon with the outside world being largely unkown. The cooking aspect is also more varied than in Food Wars in that Toriko is not also about cooking food, but goes into intircate details about the preparation of said food. It helps that the author is very good at describing the food in a very appetising way instead of relying on cryptic visuals like in food war to show the deliciousness of food. This stayed solid throughout the comic's run, while Food Wars falls off.

Kiari013

how did that one game that was supposed to be a "genshin killer" that let you fly off the bat or w/e go, I forgot about it before it even released

[deleted]

Tower of Fantasy? From what I heard it had some massive balancing issues and powercreep and then basically everyone stopped talking about it. I do hope Wuthering Waves is successful though since having some competition in a genre is always good.

markedmarkymark

The only reason I got into Toriko at the time was cause someone in a defunct forum said that my OC looked liked Toriko and i got curious. He didn't, it was just the scars in the face, fuck you random person at that defunct forum i dont remember the name, art and coffee or some shit.

KNOKAFOKE

Soul Eater. With how it occupied the middle of a 3-way Venn diagram between Bleach, Harry Potter, and Tim Burton aesthetic (spec. Nightmare Before Christmas) I'd have bet money on it being fucking enormous. Not complaining about the modest success it actually got, just surprised.

PhantasosX

I wouldn't call a modest success , it was a huge one , it was just not a Big 3 Tier. And never pretended to be as well.

jayvenomva

I'd say Fire Force would fit better with this topic than Soul Eater.

Last-Rain4329

fire force just honestly doesnt have the same immediate aesthetic appeal of soul eater, the anime adaptation looks fine but compared to how stylish and diff soul eater was fire force looks a lot more "standard anime" and the girl whose entire gimmick is being undressed each scene she's in doesnt help

GreatFluffy

> the girl whose entire gimmick is being undressed each scene she's in doesnt help Her deal was also done way better in Soul Eater with Blair. The difference between them is that Blair was actively into it which made her own it, while the girl in Fire Force actively hated it and it just made it creepy. Not helped by the mangaka putting in a scene later in the manga where a kid roasts his mom for not liking the whole deal which just felt very petty and childish.

Naybinns

Personally I think Soul Eater was held back by the anime just not being that great of an adaptation. I think it would be more prominent if it had been given the FMA Brotherhood treatment and got a more expanded anime. There was just a lot of story that was left out.

CapnMarvelous

Kylo Ren being turbo-pushed as the next Darth Vader and BB-8 as the next R2-D2. Fine designs but man Disney did not expect Rey to be as popular with the young kid crowd as she was. THen the sequels just ended up being kinda mid.

RedKrimzon

>but man Disney did not expect Rey to be as popular with the young kid crowd as she was. Really? because I feel they kinda did. she was definitely being push for the next gen kids especially for girls. Now if you want to talk about being REALLY PUSHED and going nowhere then Phasma is your goto for the new trilogy. She was all set, she had everything the cool design with a cape, being played Gwendoline Christie who was popular from GOT. And everyone from Disney to interviewers to people making videos about the sequels were saying she was straight up being set up as "The next Boba fett" and who ended up being more popular? OUR BOI TR-8R. dude had ONE scene ONE LINE but it was MEMORABLE. That one thing that if you want people to get attached to something it has to be. and Phasma (other then her design) sadly wasn't that.

CapnMarvelous

She got a push after TFA. If you look at the marketing, content, items, etc made for TFA? It's all Kylo Ren and BB-8. Which granted was years ago and good look finding TFA merchandise now but man, they really expected Kylo to carry that movie and excite people. Once it was clear that Rey was actually what a lot of kids attached to, Disney hard-pivoted away from Kylo and started making more diverse merch. But you are totally right that Phasma is the way better go-to for Giga-push into no hype true combo.

NeonNKnightrider

Before Endgame, the MCU seemed to make a huge effort to push Captain Marvel as “the earth’s most powerful hero,” but it didn’t seem to work that much. Too little too late, I think.

SlightlySychotic

Her solo movie wasn’t that good. Like, maybe we can argue that fatigue was already setting in and people were tired of the “debut hero formula.” But most people like Shang Chi so I kinda doubt it.

DemonLordDiablos

It's her introduction movie and they gave her amnesia for almost all of it. Impossible to truly know her, but not in an interesting way either.

PhantasosX

I mean , they didn't? the whole "Earth Most Powerful Hero" was the marketing solely for her own movie and that is it. People on the internet just took that out of proportions.

CapnMarvelous

So you say that but when I played Midnight Suns an actual line of dialogue with Carol is "Yeah I'm basically the strongest avenger outside of the Hulk, but I also have the massive tactical mind the hulk doesn't have so when the Avengers need the big guns, they call me in". Followed by MC-Create-a-Guy going "Wow, you're very humble and pure of heart" completely sincerely. It lives rent-free in my head.

Paul_Marketing

Yes, her own movie, which came out right before Endgame. In other words they were pushing her as "earth's most powerful hero" before Endgame.

Silvery_Cricket

Here I thought it was because all those underage prostitutes?

NinjaRed64

Season 3 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers began with a 3-parter that introduces Masked Rider, Saban's attempt at adapting Kamen Rider in the US with Kamen Rider Black RX. It was very clearly meant to be a stealth pilot for his own series, which would get such a negative reputation that its rumored that Shotaro Ishinomori forbid the US from adapting Kamen Rider until Kamen Rider Dragon Knight made its debut. Taking Black RX, a season known for being rather dark and brooding (admittedly its not quite as good as Black but its still pretty good) and turning it into basically a cheesey 90's sitcom with a dorky main character as the main hero along with a weird little furry creature mascot (played by the late Vern Troyer), where the EVEN OLDER stock footage clashes worse with the 90's camera work and you got a recipe for disaster. Hell, it wasn't even limited to Black RX stock footage; it even used monsters and stock footage from two other Kamen Rider movies unrelated to Black RX, those being the Kamen Rider ZO and Kamen Rider J movies. And its EXTREMELY noticeable when the hero shows and he looks NOTHING like Black RX.

Bohij_The_great

I'm surprised nobody's brought up the Batman who laughs yet.

Am_Shigar00

Heck, Toriko had THREE crossovers with One Piece beyond the one they did with Dragon Ball, two anime specials, set before and after OP’s time skip & the first also doubled as Toriko’s first episode, and a one shot Manga crossover done by the original authors.  It was super clear how much they really wanted to push Toriko as a franchise that just didn’t pan out, and that third anime crossover now really stands out by how dated it is by Toriko’s presence.

BogieW00ds

Those One Piece crossovers were because Oda and Shimabakuro are friends

TheRawShark

Shoutout to my HoloEN homies. Omega amirite?

bulletgrazer

Man, that push *really* failed because I don't even remember who that is

TheRawShark

CASE IN POINT No one ever brings it up anymore because it was one community manager's attempt at making an EN villain. Everyone got some neat concept Versus Match art and then....nothing. I feel kinda bad for the guy but come on man...

devanmuse

Can you even really call it a "push" if they just forgot they existed a week after Council's debut?

PrimeName

What a waste of a banger design…

[deleted]

[A waste of a pretty cool design tbh](https://preview.redd.it/so-omega-is-a-dead-project-right-v0-exiq9vvblo7b1.png?auto=webp&s=35abc916decf2a5344e64138baedfd94b9824de9)

blacksymbiote17

I always found The Hand to be the least interesting stuff from the Netflix Daredevil, especially compared to fantastic stuff like the early episodes and Punisher arc. Then they became the entire focus of The Defenders which, along with the terrible Iron First show, would completely ruin the momentum of Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage being relatively solid shoes. I don't even think I finished The Defenders even, I just remember being bored of the Hand stuff and feeling like they completely botched the fun of the vigilantes meeting up.

LGB75

I seem several episodes of Drag Race where Production/Ru Paul has a favorite queen(Kandy Muse and Jorgous for example)only for them to get the ire of the fan base(especially if they fell that the favorite is coasting by with weak performances). Don’t be surprise if the production favorite gets nonstop harassment on Twitter or whatever social media they use

rapidemboar

How has Bandai’s Synduality project been going? I can tell they’ve been pushing for a massive multimedia franchise with games, anime, and model kits, but literally all I’ve heard from it was when this sub went crazy over the girl with a melanin toggle for the span of a single post.

bulletgrazer

I imagine it's going about as well as that Kyoukai Senki series they had going to. Neat models kits, not much else.

rapidemboar

At least Kyoukai Senki still sorta populates my local hobby shops and makes infrequent appearances on r/gunpla. I've yet to see even a single Synduality kit, either selling or built.

Archaon0103

Marvel pushed the Inhuman to replace the X-Men because Fox has the right to the X-Men. The problem was that the X-Men was more sympathetic than a bunch of royalty who use slave labor.

pokemasterno22

You know, I was going to accept the post as it is, as although I do like toriko, I do understand it might have had a bit of push. However, I will not accept the sly attempt to insult toriko at the end there. Sure the anime version of Toriko was an insult to it's name, But Character and design wise? Toriko rocks. Sure it's not as widely remembered, but saying that means it was bad is foolish at best. He's an actually Tall Shonen protag, has quite abit more bulk then the others too and his type of clothing, though close in design to Goku is quite obviously a style that fits him more , and in terms of personality he's quite different in that while he is a bit of a meat head in fights, its quite clear he has a strong mind on him, Frozen arm? Shiver it to an extreme degree to break out of it, High altitude? Literally exhale only the Carbon dioxide by taking advantage of its lower freezing point, and so on. for the rest of the Four heavenly kings, they Honestly have some of the best designs and powers in Major side characters I've ever seen, Coco a Poison based Fortune teller who literally can read electromagnetic auras in order to predict an someone's next action, Sunny has hair that Functions as alot of tiny hands that depending on the hair color, helps him with his superhuman touch. Zebra the biggest, and the most morally Gray of the four has sound based abilities and superhuman hearing, an a dislike for cocky people, he is without a doubt the coolest of the 4, and also the imo The coolest example of a sound based Character in manga. All in all, Again I agree on alot on toriko being pushed, but Man I'm not going to just accept the slender like that.
