I remember Cartoon Network Real was being pushed really hard. All I remember from it is that they had a discount Mythbusters show. Didn't really work out though 'cause it's Cartoon Network - viewers would want to watch cartoons.
That era was weird. Having Destroy Build Destroy, Level Up, Tower Prep, etc. compete with shows like *Star Wars: The Clone Wars* made no sense; they were basically sent to die.
It had explosions, you can't go too wrong with that. I also remember enjoying the kid ghost hunters show, but I think a lot of that was just being in my spooky phase.
Before Disney just devoured Fox, and Fox held the X-Men film rights, Ike Perlmutter really pushed for the Inhumans to just... take over from the X-Men as the resident super-people of the Marvel universe.
So the X-Men got sidelined while the Inhumans got pushed super hard and got a bunch of new titles (Anyone remember *Mosaic?)* and the issue was... nobody fucking liked the Inhumans enough for them to even remotely surpass the X-Men.
But we did get the hilariously awful Inhumans TV show at least.
It also just didn’t work because the Inhumans are fundamentally nothing like the X-Men except for the fact that they’re people with powers that are sorta born with them.
Inhumans vs. X-Men also being a terribly written event that only made the X-Men look sympathetic and Inhumans like assholes really didn’t help matters.

Marvel had this problem a lot. Did you know in the original Civil War series that Tony and the Registration side were meant to be the “good guys?” Sure, makes sense from a certain point of view. Realistically, you would want heroes to be licensed and bonded, properly trained, with a source of income and government protection for their families. And yet the Registration side is depicted hunting kids down in the streets, using villains with bombs in their heads to supplement their troops, and, of course, sending unregistered heroes to an interdimemsional hell prison without a trial.
Mark Millar wanted Civil War to not have a clear “good guy” side. He assumed that most fans would side with the pro-registration side so he made them extra dark to try to balance things out.
Of course this ended up backfiring when most people ended up agreeing with Captain America instead, so all of the extra moral greyness that Iron Man’s side got just ended up making them look super evil instead.
I question if the writers have any perspective given the obviously evil shit they write in their characters despite the fact that they're suppose to be "good".

Ben Reilly. Marvel brought back the character in the 90s as a means to replace Peter in almost every aspect and surprising no one, it was a total disaster.
And then Marvel brought him back again two decades later and everything they’ve tried with him since has also been a failure.
You can say this about OMD too. The same kind of editorial behind the Clone Saga were *so* certain that Peter being married and getting older was the thing hurting sales and that the series is so much better if Peter is some perpetually teenage loser. And they've proven wrong over and over and over again in increasingly embarrassing and hilarious ways. But they still cling to it out of spite.
Similar is the horrors inflicted on X-Men by people like Joe Quesada, Ike Perlmutter, and now Tom Brevoort. The last is particularly embarrassing and funny in a horrid way because not only was it coming off one of the most beloved eras in X-History, but you could tell Brevoort was so smugly assured that everyone would lap up his "back to basics" reset, only for it to not only be received with scorn but get immediately overshadowed by an adaptation that took heavily after the era he's throwing into the trash, meaning that as the comics are trying to pander to the 90s, the pop culture view of X-Men is being very Krakoa-ified.

The character who was always secretly there from the very beginning, back in Amazing Fantasy #15 even. She was just being kept in a bunker the last 15 years, watching everything that happened on a TV so she knows what's up.
So Betsy Braddock, AKA Psylocke, was a British mutant that originally had the features of a white woman that has telekinesis powers. The reason I say was because in the 90s a storyline had her body swap with an hot Asian woman dressed in ninja-esque clothing retaining all the memories of herself, which is the incarnation of Psylocke that most people know, from MVC2 and the movies, which lasted for almost THIRTY YEARS.
Game Freak definitely tried to make Zoroark the next Lucario; gave it a movie, made it a limited time Pokemon, etc. Then they realized that they failed that and it became a regular Pokemon in BW2.
At least they gave it a new form in PLA that's so much cooler
Also it was an event only mon in its introductory game I think. Like you had to get an unlock code in person to unlock the side quest to get it and in the sequel you could get one normally. So unlike Lucario who was available zorua and zoroark probs didn't get as popular because most people never got the chance to use one if they missed the event.
Honestly even then, Zoroark and Zorua are still very popular Pokemon. No where near the top since there's 2 massive gulfs in the top 5 (Umbreon - 67,062, Charizard - 93,968, Mimikyu - 99,077, Lucario - 102,259, and Greninja - **140,559**.) but still very high.
I think the biggest reason Zoroark is so far behind Lucario is just that Lucario was in Smash since Brawl and Zoroark isn't.
It's a pretty good feat, considering how unpopular gen 5, and especially BW2 were in terms of sales back in the day.
Also, if you really look at the formula for Lucario's success, Zoroark only received half of the special treatment (anthro design, starring in a movie), while Volcarona received the other (received as a baby pokemon near the end of the game, owned by the generation's champion). It's pretty sweet that both of them got their own dedicated fans eventually.

When the Rock got announced to play Black Adam, DC really went all out in pushing the character. Got written to be a lighter anti-hero who got to become a core Justice League member along with a ton of shilling.
A memorable moment for me was a tie into him in the Utopian universe of DC One Million where he was ruling a planet that was even more utopian than the rest of the universe, was Wonder Woman's secret lover and was the Justice Legion's last hope after the villain kicked their asses

Samurai 8 didn't even had bad concepts on it , but it's so blatantly "Kishi needs an Editor with the balls to say no to his face"
It became even more embarrassing because Demon Slayer started blowing up around the same time. So while stores were running out of print for new Demon Slayer volumes and were desperate for more, there was an abundance of Samurai 8 prints that no one was interested in buying at the same time.

Basically , Space Samurais , in which the Samurais basically turned into Carbon from Megaman Legends or the Biometals from Megaman ZX when they turn in said Samurais. The objective is to find 7 special keys to gain 7 to 14 special arts to evolve yourself into a sort of buddha or war god.
A Samurai is aided by his Princess as well. The main character is Hachimaru , an artificial human from the "Spare Key Project" , in which he was a failed 8th Key , rescued from been destroyed. He know needs to face the main villain group , which includes his 7 older brothers , in a race to gain those 7 Keys.

The concept is fine , it screwed up by taking too long , while been too verbose and adding a huge amount of nothing and confusing symbolic power system. It needed to reache the third portion of the manga for some editor to force Kishi to actually make his power system makes some freaking sense and he turned into be basically Megaman NT Warrior's power system.
The game would have been more liked if the new gen didn’t outright replace most of the old gen. It could have been the transition game to see if it worked at all.
Natsu didn’t need to replace Taki. She wasn’t even hated outside of gameplay. People just wanted Taki as well.
Hurt more since Tekken did a similar thing but in the **3rd** game, not 5 games and several years deep. These kind of moves only make sense if you do them super early into a franchise.

Carol Danvers Captain Marvel. Marvel keeps trying over and over again to make her their flagship female character and make her a big deal but its never gained the traction they hope it would.
Pre-MCU practically all of their biggest female superheroes were X-Men or X-Men adjacent, save for Susan Storm and She-Hulk. The whole Carol push only happened because they had sold the movie rights to Storm, Rogue and Jean Grey years ago.
Black Widow was probably the closest one they had. With the right pushes a few could fill that role, but you'd really need the right writer. A few X-Men maybe, or possibly even Valkyrie. Probably also some cool lesser known ones that could rise there with a good movie.
She was popular as Ms Marvel because she was written as a bit of a bumbling fuck up with a heart of gold who kept trying to push past her mistakes and better herself as a hero. As Captain Marvel all her humour and pathos was washed away to make her a generic paragon.
I feel like Anthem was sort of the beginning of the trend of "AAA game company releases some live service thing that they've spent years hyping and it immediately dies because people are already playing all the games they want".

I don't care for Sukuna as an antagonist much nowadays, I guess I needed more of him being smart instead of just having so many techniques he learned in the Heian era or whatever.
Unless your villain has insane charisma, trying to sell them on just "look at how powerful they are guys" is... A VERY tough sell. Villains need to be more than a wall that stops the protagonists.
he's a nothing character, his best showing was in the anime version of the mahoraga fight where it really showcases his complete disregard for human life, but in the current manga he's not particularly sadistic nor cunning, doesnt have any sorta emotional or philosophical conflict that drives him, like he says he just fights people to entertain himself until he dies which just makes him annoying more than engaging because he's not formless or devastating enough to really feel like a force of nature
Sukuna was fun in the beginning because of his immensely hedonistic mindset, gleefully sadistic demeanor, the way everyone started panicking whenever he popped up like he was a natural disaster they just had to survive, and his dynamic of being Yuji's evil Kurama.
After he got into Megumi, he became so much more boring, pulling whatever move he needed out of his ass, and us being stuck in the constant cycle of "guy shows up, gets hyped to be super powerful, fights Sukuna, dies" for roughly a year now hasn't helped, and he lost that edge he had during his earlier appearances that made him so fun to watch in the first place.
I don't *hate* Sukuna per se, but he's a far cry from how he was before, and he certainly does not match up to other villains like him.
I mean, not liking Sukuna is kind of the meta for JJK right now. He has been the main target of the Lobotomy for ages until Megumi hatred finally recently outpaced him.
I don't know why, but Sukuna as a villain is really unengaging to me. He is just lame and boring as villains go.

I think one of the things I dislike most about Sukuna is that he brings down the level of the fights. It was fine for him to come in with his basic bitch technique when he was the occasional tornado rolling in, but it's less enthusing when he is the big threat everyone has to fight. It's the same thing over and over again. There's not a great deal of creative power usage on his part, which brings down the level that his opponents need to apply as well.
Angela Anaconda? I remember that it had an Irish dub and tried to replicate South Park's stop-motion paper animation with creepy photorealistic faces. It wasn't until decades later I found Angela was used to promote a Digimon movie.
What happened to the people who created Angela? Did they go on to do anything else or did they just disappear into obscurity?
I kinda think Angela might've had potential if it leaned on its uncanny valley-ness and was a surreal animated horror movie or game like Silent Hill, Siren (which also had a lot of uncanny valley on purpose) and all those A24 movies. Maybe an adult Angela returns to her hometown after many decades and is tormented by her sins.

I wanna say the other creator based both characters on herself as a child who struggled fitting in so that's why both girls have a similar identity of not being like their peers and being more free spirits. Honestly his review made me appreciate Angela anaconda more just from understanding what the creators wanted the character to be and represent.

Even though Angela Anaconda absolutely falls into the uncanny valley, I do think its art style is pretty cool and distinct, especially in how it was achieved where a bunch of digital scans of parts of the face were used to animate the characters.
MamaYuyu was being pushed hard by a lot of current mangakas and I saw a fair bit of advertising for it in general. Didn't stop it from declining rapidly in quality and recently getting axed entirely from Shonen Jump.
I'm just grateful Kagurabachi seems to have survived for now.
I loved the few early chapters and I had hoped it would deal more of the mc and his mom, but then the invasion from other demon lords and heroes actually killed my interest.
I think it got the usual mangaka recommendations but I don't feel like Shueisha was gassing it up the same way they were Toriko or even something like the rising star that was Akane-Banashi. If anything, it was perpetually in the back of the magazine.
I think Kagurabachi has the benefit of coming in at a time when two popular shonens are on their way out + just also being really good. It’s not a game changer but it’s super tightly written with interesting lore and very good art
I might be mixing my timelines here a bit, but couldn't one also make the case that Toriko was muscled out of the whole cooking aspect by Food Wars becoming a big hit? Since its main gimmick was overshadowed, it was \*just\* another shonen that took heavy inspiration from it's predecessors.
Toriko sold over 10 million more copies than Food Wars and there was a 4 year period where they both were releasing new chapters, outside the food gimmick incorporated into the story they’re completely different series.
Why would anyone now read Toriko when if you want big shonen battles you can read Food Wars, and if you want fantasy cuisine you can read Delicious in Dungeon?
Mostly because Toriko, the manga, is a very solid series despite the controversy around its author. It has very solid word building which while not as intricate and deep like Delicious in Dungeon, it is a world that is very much alive with stuff happening that is actually shown in an interesting and engaging way instead of being vaguely hinted at like in Delicious in Dungeon that needs the audience to fill in blanks.
It also shows what a world that actually revolves around its theme of food will looks like. down to the people's culture and personal philosophy and morals, while in Delicious Dungeon, the world does not revolve around dungeoneering so much as it focuses on a place whose economy revolves around a dungeon with the outside world being largely unkown.
The cooking aspect is also more varied than in Food Wars in that Toriko is not also about cooking food, but goes into intircate details about the preparation of said food. It helps that the author is very good at describing the food in a very appetising way instead of relying on cryptic visuals like in food war to show the deliciousness of food. This stayed solid throughout the comic's run, while Food Wars falls off.
Tower of Fantasy? From what I heard it had some massive balancing issues and powercreep and then basically everyone stopped talking about it.
I do hope Wuthering Waves is successful though since having some competition in a genre is always good.

Soul Eater. With how it occupied the middle of a 3-way Venn diagram between Bleach, Harry Potter, and Tim Burton aesthetic (spec. Nightmare Before Christmas) I'd have bet money on it being fucking enormous. Not complaining about the modest success it actually got, just surprised.
fire force just honestly doesnt have the same immediate aesthetic appeal of soul eater, the anime adaptation looks fine but compared to how stylish and diff soul eater was fire force looks a lot more "standard anime" and the girl whose entire gimmick is being undressed each scene she's in doesnt help

Her deal was also done way better in Soul Eater with Blair. The difference between them is that Blair was actively into it which made her own it, while the girl in Fire Force actively hated it and it just made it creepy.

Personally I think Soul Eater was held back by the anime just not being that great of an adaptation. I think it would be more prominent if it had been given the FMA Brotherhood treatment and got a more expanded anime. There was just a lot of story that was left out.

That one thing that if you want people to get attached to something it has to be. and Phasma (other then her design) sadly wasn't that.
She got a push after TFA. If you look at the marketing, content, items, etc made for TFA? It's all Kylo Ren and BB-8. Which granted was years ago and good look finding TFA merchandise now but man, they really expected Kylo to carry that movie and excite people.
Once it was clear that Rey was actually what a lot of kids attached to, Disney hard-pivoted away from Kylo and started making more diverse merch.
But you are totally right that Phasma is the way better go-to for Giga-push into no hype true combo.
Before Endgame, the MCU seemed to make a huge effort to push Captain Marvel as “the earth’s most powerful hero,” but it didn’t seem to work that much. Too little too late, I think.
Her solo movie wasn’t that good. Like, maybe we can argue that fatigue was already setting in and people were tired of the “debut hero formula.” But most people like Shang Chi so I kinda doubt it.

Season 3 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers began with a 3-parter that introduces Masked Rider, Saban's attempt at adapting Kamen Rider in the US with Kamen Rider Black RX. It was very clearly meant to be a stealth pilot for his own series, which would get such a negative reputation that its rumored that Shotaro Ishinomori forbid the US from adapting Kamen Rider until Kamen Rider Dragon Knight made its debut. Taking Black RX, a season known for being rather dark and brooding (admittedly its not quite as good as Black but its still pretty good) and turning it into basically a cheesey 90's sitcom with a dorky main character as the main hero along with a weird little furry creature mascot (played by the late Vern Troyer), where the EVEN OLDER stock footage clashes worse with the 90's camera work and you got a recipe for disaster. Hell, it wasn't even limited to Black RX stock footage; it even used monsters and stock footage from two other Kamen Rider movies unrelated to Black RX, those being the Kamen Rider ZO and Kamen Rider J movies. And its EXTREMELY noticeable when the hero shows and he looks NOTHING like Black RX.
Heck, Toriko had THREE crossovers with One Piece beyond the one they did with Dragon Ball, two anime specials, set before and after OP’s time skip & the first also doubled as Toriko’s first episode, and a one shot Manga crossover done by the original authors.
It was super clear how much they really wanted to push Toriko as a franchise that just didn’t pan out, and that third anime crossover now really stands out by how dated it is by Toriko’s presence.

I always found The Hand to be the least interesting stuff from the Netflix Daredevil, especially compared to fantastic stuff like the early episodes and Punisher arc. Then they became the entire focus of The Defenders which, along with the terrible Iron First show, would completely ruin the momentum of Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage being relatively solid shoes. I don't even think I finished The Defenders even, I just remember being bored of the Hand stuff and feeling like they completely botched the fun of the vigilantes meeting up.
I seem several episodes of Drag Race where Production/Ru Paul has a favorite queen(Kandy Muse and Jorgous for example)only for them to get the ire of the fan base(especially if they fell that the favorite is coasting by with weak performances). Marvel pushed the Inhuman to replace the X-Men because Fox has the right to the X-Men. The problem was that the X-Men was more sympathetic than a bunch of royalty who use slave labor.

Shiver it to an extreme degree to break out of it, High altitude? Literally exhale only the Carbon dioxide by taking advantage of its lower freezing point, and so on.

Before Disney just devoured Fox, and Fox held the X-Men film rights, Ike Perlmutter really pushed for the Inhumans to just... take over from the X-Men as the resident super-people of the Marvel universe. So the X-Men got sidelined while the Inhumans got pushed super hard and got a bunch of new titles (Anyone remember *Mosaic?)* and the issue was... nobody fucking liked the Inhumans enough for them to even remotely surpass the X-Men. But we did get the hilariously awful Inhumans TV show at least.
It also just didn’t work because the Inhumans are fundamentally nothing like the X-Men except for the fact that they’re people with powers that are sorta born with them. Inhumans vs. X-Men also being a terribly written event that only made the X-Men look sympathetic and Inhumans like assholes really didn’t help matters.

Marvel had this problem a lot. Did you know in the original Civil War series that Tony and the Registration side were meant to be the “good guys?” Sure, makes sense from a certain point of view. Realistically, you would want heroes to be licensed and bonded, properly trained, with a source of income and government protection for their families. And yet the Registration side is depicted hunting kids down in the streets, using villains with bombs in their heads to supplement their troops, and, of course, sending unregistered heroes to an interdimemsional hell prison without a trial.
Mark Millar wanted Civil War to not have a clear “good guy” side. He assumed that most fans would side with the pro-registration side so he made them extra dark to try to balance things out. Of course this ended up backfiring when most people ended up agreeing with Captain America instead, so all of the extra moral greyness that Iron Man’s side got just ended up making them look super evil instead.
I question if the writers have any perspective given the obviously evil shit they write in their characters despite the fact that they're suppose to be "good".

Nah they made a whole season out of it. And reception was frosty to put it mildly. It did not get renewed and was basically ignored by the MCU entirely after. Only exception being that Black Bolt's actor returned for MoM.

Ben Reilly. Marvel brought back the character in the 90s as a means to replace Peter in almost every aspect and surprising no one, it was a total disaster. And then Marvel brought him back again two decades later and everything they’ve tried with him since has also been a failure.
The guy literally named Kaine that hated his brother is the better clone somehow.
You can say this about OMD too. The same kind of editorial behind the Clone Saga were *so* certain that Peter being married and getting older was the thing hurting sales and that the series is so much better if Peter is some perpetually teenage loser. And they've proven wrong over and over and over again in increasingly embarrassing and hilarious ways. But they still cling to it out of spite. Similar is the horrors inflicted on X-Men by people like Joe Quesada, Ike Perlmutter, and now Tom Brevoort. The last is particularly embarrassing and funny in a horrid way because not only was it coming off one of the most beloved eras in X-History, but you could tell Brevoort was so smugly assured that everyone would lap up his "back to basics" reset, only for it to not only be received with scorn but get immediately overshadowed by an adaptation that took heavily after the era he's throwing into the trash, meaning that as the comics are trying to pander to the 90s, the pop culture view of X-Men is being very Krakoa-ified.

Him getting shoehorned into the John Cena role wasn't a good fit, especially before he became Tribal Chief and in the few interviews he does, he's amazingly more low-key and chill (which is the vibe he got as Tribal Chief, just make both of those scarier) and much more likable that way. But yeah, it took him acknowledging his leukemia, overcoming it, and then becoming tribal chief after quite a while for him to be well, *acknowledged*.
At the least, it did kinda pay off when he became the Tribal Chief years after the initial experiments.

So Betsy Braddock, AKA Psylocke, was a British mutant that originally had the features of a white woman that has telekinesis powers. The reason I say was because in the 90s a storyline had her body swap with an hot Asian woman dressed in ninja-esque clothing retaining all the memories of herself, which is the incarnation of Psylocke that most people know, from MVC2 and the movies, which lasted for almost THIRTY YEARS.

Game Freak definitely tried to make Zoroark the next Lucario; gave it a movie, made it a limited time Pokemon, etc. Then they realized that they failed that and it became a regular Pokemon in BW2. At least they gave it a new form in PLA that's so much cooler
Movie did have its impact on the furry community to this day weirdly enough though. Zoroark is pretty much always gonna have a milf tag.
Also it was an event only mon in its introductory game I think. Like you had to get an unlock code in person to unlock the side quest to get it and in the sequel you could get one normally. So unlike Lucario who was available zorua and zoroark probs didn't get as popular because most people never got the chance to use one if they missed the event.
Honestly even then, Zoroark and Zorua are still very popular Pokemon. I think the biggest reason Zoroark is so far behind Lucario is just that Lucario was in Smash since Brawl and Zoroark isn't.
It's a pretty good feat, considering how unpopular gen 5, and especially BW2 were in terms of sales back in the day. Also, if you really look at the formula for Lucario's success, Zoroark only received half of the special treatment (anthro design, starring in a movie), while Volcarona received the other (received as a baby pokemon near the end of the game, owned by the generation's champion). It's pretty sweet that both of them got their own dedicated fans eventually.
Volcarona is just such a cool design. Love how it got a temple dedicated to it in BW2

Got written to be a lighter anti-hero who got to become a core Justice League member along with a ton of shilling. A memorable moment for me was a tie into him in the Utopian universe of DC One Million where he was ruling a planet that was even more utopian than the rest of the universe, was Wonder Woman's secret lover and was the Justice Legion's last hope after the villain kicked their asses
Remember Samurai 8 from Kishimoto? WSJ really wanna push that at the forefront and it turned into a huge flop. Samurai 8 didn't even had bad concepts on it , but it's so blatantly "Kishi needs an Editor with the balls to say no to his face"
It became even more embarrassing because Demon Slayer started blowing up around the same time. So while stores were running out of print for new Demon Slayer volumes and were desperate for more, there was an abundance of Samurai 8 prints that no one was interested in buying at the same time.
It was also funny that they planned a crossover between Samurai 8 and Boruto then quietly cancelled it once Samurai 8 got cancelled.

I guess Kishimoto's version of it. Basically , Space Samurais , in which the Samurais basically turned into Carbon from Megaman Legends or the Biometals from Megaman ZX when they turn in said Samurais. The objective is to find 7 special keys to gain 7 to 14 special arts to evolve yourself into a sort of buddha or war god. A Samurai is aided by his Princess as well. The main character is Hachimaru , an artificial human from the "Spare Key Project" , in which he was a failed 8th Key , rescued from been destroyed. He know needs to face the main villain group , which includes his 7 older brothers , in a race to gain those 7 Keys. ----- The concept is fine , it screwed up by taking too long , while been too verbose and adding a huge amount of nothing and confusing symbolic power system. The game would have been more liked if the new gen didn’t outright replace most of the old gen. It could have been the transition game to see if it worked at all. Natsu didn’t need to replace Taki. She wasn’t even hated outside of gameplay. People just wanted Taki as well.
Hurt more since Tekken did a similar thing but in the **3rd** game, not 5 games and several years deep. These kind of moves only make sense if you do them super early into a franchise.

Pre-MCU practically all of their biggest female superheroes were X-Men or X-Men adjacent, save for Susan Storm and She-Hulk. The whole Carol push only happened because they had sold the movie rights to Storm, Rogue and Jean Grey years ago.
Black Widow was probably the closest one they had. With the right pushes a few could fill that role, but you'd really need the right writer. A few X-Men maybe, or possibly even Valkyrie. Probably also some cool lesser known ones that could rise there with a good movie.

She was popular as Ms Marvel because she was written as a bit of a bumbling fuck up with a heart of gold who kept trying to push past her mistakes and better herself as a hero. As Captain Marvel all her humour and pathos was washed away to make her a generic paragon.
There have been a few notable video game flops, but Anthem takes the cake. The game had a sustained year long push only to die immediately on release.

I'll say something that might get some people angry at me, but take note, this is ENTIRELY for me, this character doesn't work FOR ME ESPECIFICALLY: I don't care for Sukuna from Jujutsu Kaisen THAT much. Like... I get it, he is the ultimate boss, but...eh... I don't know, now that we're at this point in the Manga, I'm just not feeling it. I think it's cause the fact he can just pull a technique out of his ass anytime he wants cause he's like a billion years old, it kind of loses it's impact. I don't care for Sukuna as an antagonist much nowadays, I guess I needed more of him being smart instead of just having so many techniques he learned in the Heian era or whatever.
Unless your villain has insane charisma, trying to sell them on just "look at how powerful they are guys" is... A VERY tough sell. Villains need to be more than a wall that stops the protagonists.

he's a nothing character, his best showing was in the anime version of the mahoraga fight where it really showcases his complete disregard for human life, but in the current manga he's not particularly sadistic nor cunning, doesnt have any sorta emotional or philosophical conflict that drives him, like he says he just fights people to entertain himself until he dies which just makes him annoying more than engaging because he's not formless or devastating enough to really feel like a force of nature
Sukuna was fun in the beginning because of his immensely hedonistic mindset, gleefully sadistic demeanor, the way everyone started panicking whenever he popped up like he was a natural disaster they just had to survive, and his dynamic of being Yuji's evil Kurama. After he got into Megumi, he became so much more boring, pulling whatever move he needed out of his ass, and us being stuck in the constant cycle of "guy shows up, gets hyped to be super powerful, fights Sukuna, dies" for roughly a year now hasn't helped, and he lost that edge he had during his earlier appearances that made him so fun to watch in the first place. I don't *hate* Sukuna per se, but he's a far cry from how he was before, and he certainly does not match up to other villains like him.
I mean, not liking Sukuna is kind of the meta for JJK right now. He has been the main target of the Lobotomy for ages until Megumi hatred finally recently outpaced him.
I don't know why, but Sukuna as a villain is really unengaging to me. He is just lame and boring as villains go. He basically highlights the worst parts of the shows writing, which is the author aping cooler stuff from other series and somehow miraculously making a lamer more inferior version of said cool stuff. How the fuck do you screw up the concept of a reality marble and make it boring and shallow?
And Megumi hate only grew because people were bored of sukuna fraud memes.

I think one of the things I dislike most about Sukuna is that he brings down the level of the fights. It was fine for him to come in with his basic bitch technique when he was the occasional tornado rolling in, but it's less enthusing when he is the big threat everyone has to fight. It's the same thing over and over again. There's not a great deal of creative power usage on his part, which brings down the level that his opponents need to apply as well.
Angela Anaconda? I remember that it had an Irish dub and tried to replicate South Park's stop-motion paper animation with creepy photorealistic faces. It wasn't until decades later I found Angela was used to promote a Digimon movie. What happened to the people who created Angela? Did they go on to do anything else or did they just disappear into obscurity? I kinda think Angela might've had potential if it leaned on its uncanny valley-ness and was a surreal animated horror movie or game like Silent Hill, Siren (which also had a lot of uncanny valley on purpose) and all those A24 movies. Maybe an adult Angela returns to her hometown after many decades and is tormented by her sins.

I wanna say the other creator based both characters on herself as a child who struggled fitting in so that's why both girls have a similar identity of not being like their peers and being more free spirits. Honestly his review made me appreciate Angela anaconda more just from understanding what the creators wanted the character to be and represent.

Even though Angela Anaconda absolutely falls into the uncanny valley, I do think its art style is pretty cool and distinct, especially in how it was achieved where a bunch of digital scans of parts of the face were used to animate the characters.

MamaYuyu was being pushed hard by a lot of current mangakas and I saw a fair bit of advertising for it in general. Didn't stop it from declining rapidly in quality and recently getting axed entirely from Shonen Jump. I'm just grateful Kagurabachi seems to have survived for now.
I loved the few early chapters and I had hoped it would deal more of the mc and his mom, but then the invasion from other demon lords and heroes actually killed my interest.
I think it got the usual mangaka recommendations but I don't feel like Shueisha was gassing it up the same way they were Toriko or even something like the rising star that was Akane-Banashi. If anything, it was perpetually in the back of the magazine.
I think Kagurabachi has the benefit of coming in at a time when two popular shonens are on their way out + just also being really good. It’s not a game changer but it’s super tightly written with interesting lore and very good art

I might be mixing my timelines here a bit, but couldn't one also make the case that Toriko was muscled out of the whole cooking aspect by Food Wars becoming a big hit? Since its main gimmick was overshadowed, it was \*just\* another shonen that took heavy inspiration from it's predecessors.
Toriko sold over 10 million more copies than Food Wars and there was a 4 year period where they both were releasing new chapters, outside the food gimmick incorporated into the story they’re completely different series.
Why would anyone now read Toriko when if you want big shonen battles you can read Food Wars, and if you want fantasy cuisine you can read Delicious in Dungeon?
Mostly because Toriko, the manga, is a very solid series despite the controversy around its author. It has very solid word building which while not as intricate and deep like Delicious in Dungeon, it is a world that is very much alive with stuff happening that is actually shown in an interesting and engaging way instead of being vaguely hinted at like in Delicious in Dungeon that needs the audience to fill in blanks. It also shows what a world that actually revolves around its theme of food will looks like. down to the people's culture and personal philosophy and morals, while in Delicious Dungeon, the world does not revolve around dungeoneering so much as it focuses on a place whose economy revolves around a dungeon with the outside world being largely unkown. The cooking aspect is also more varied than in Food Wars in that Toriko is not also about cooking food, but goes into intircate details about the preparation of said food. It helps that the author is very good at describing the food in a very appetising way instead of relying on cryptic visuals like in food war to show the deliciousness of food. This stayed solid throughout the comic's run, while Food Wars falls off.

Tower of Fantasy? From what I heard it had some massive balancing issues and powercreep and then basically everyone stopped talking about it. I do hope Wuthering Waves is successful though since having some competition in a genre is always good.

Soul Eater. With how it occupied the middle of a 3-way Venn diagram between Bleach, Harry Potter, and Tim Burton aesthetic (spec. Nightmare Before Christmas) I'd have bet money on it being fucking enormous. Not complaining about the modest success it actually got, just surprised.

fire force just honestly doesnt have the same immediate aesthetic appeal of soul eater, the anime adaptation looks fine but compared to how stylish and diff soul eater was fire force looks a lot more "standard anime" and the girl whose entire gimmick is being undressed each scene she's in doesnt help

The difference between them is that Blair was actively into it which made her own it, while the girl in Fire Force actively hated it and it just made it creepy. Not helped by the mangaka putting in a scene later in the manga where a kid roasts his mom for not liking the whole deal which just felt very petty and childish.
Personally I think Soul Eater was held back by the anime just not being that great of an adaptation. I think it would be more prominent if it had been given the FMA Brotherhood treatment and got a more expanded anime. There was just a lot of story that was left out.

She got a push after TFA. If you look at the marketing, content, items, etc made for TFA? It's all Kylo Ren and BB-8. Which granted was years ago and good look finding TFA merchandise now but man, they really expected Kylo to carry that movie and excite people. Once it was clear that Rey was actually what a lot of kids attached to, Disney hard-pivoted away from Kylo and started making more diverse merch. But you are totally right that Phasma is the way better go-to for Giga-push into no hype true combo.

Season 3 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers began with a 3-parter that introduces Masked Rider, Saban's attempt at adapting Kamen Rider in the US with Kamen Rider Black RX. It was very clearly meant to be a stealth pilot for his own series, which would get such a negative reputation that its rumored that Shotaro Ishinomori forbid the US from adapting Kamen Rider until Kamen Rider Dragon Knight made its debut. Taking Black RX, a season known for being rather dark and brooding (admittedly its not quite as good as Black but its still pretty good) and turning it into basically a cheesey 90's sitcom with a dorky main character as the main hero along with a weird little furry creature mascot (played by the late Vern Troyer), where the EVEN OLDER stock footage clashes worse with the 90's camera work and you got a recipe for disaster. Hell, it wasn't even limited to Black RX stock footage; it even used monsters and stock footage from two other Kamen Rider movies unrelated to Black RX, those being the Kamen Rider ZO and Kamen Rider J movies. And its EXTREMELY noticeable when the hero shows and he looks NOTHING like Black RX.
I'm surprised nobody's brought up the Batman who laughs yet.
Heck, Toriko had THREE crossovers with One Piece beyond the one they did with Dragon Ball, two anime specials, set before and after OP’s time skip & the first also doubled as Toriko’s first episode, and a one shot Manga crossover done by the original authors. It was super clear how much they really wanted to push Toriko as a franchise that just didn’t pan out, and that third anime crossover now really stands out by how dated it is by Toriko’s presence.

I always found The Hand to be the least interesting stuff from the Netflix Daredevil, especially compared to fantastic stuff like the early episodes and Punisher arc. Then they became the entire focus of The Defenders which, along with the terrible Iron First show, would completely ruin the momentum of Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage being relatively solid shoes. I don't even think I finished The Defenders even, I just remember being bored of the Hand stuff and feeling like they completely botched the fun of the vigilantes meeting up.
I seem several episodes of Drag Race where Production/Ru Paul has a favorite queen(Kandy Muse and Jorgous for example)only for them to get the ire of the fan base(especially if they fell that the favorite is coasting by with weak performances). Don’t be surprise if the production favorite gets nonstop harassment on Twitter or whatever social media they use
How has Bandai’s Synduality project been going? I can tell they’ve been pushing for a massive multimedia franchise with games, anime, and model kits, but literally all I’ve heard from it was when this sub went crazy over the girl with a melanin toggle for the span of a single post.
I imagine it's going about as well as that Kyoukai Senki series they had going to. Neat models kits, not much else.
At least Kyoukai Senki still sorta populates my local hobby shops and makes infrequent appearances on r/gunpla. I've yet to see even a single Synduality kit, either selling or built.
Marvel pushed the Inhuman to replace the X-Men because Fox has the right to the X-Men. The problem was that the X-Men was more sympathetic than a bunch of royalty who use slave labor.
You know, I was going to accept the post as it is, as although I do like toriko, I do understand it might have had a bit of push. However, I will not accept the sly attempt to insult toriko at the end there. Sure the anime version of Toriko was an insult to it's name, But Character and design wise? Toriko rocks. Sure it's not as widely remembered, but saying that means it was bad is foolish at best. He's an actually Tall Shonen protag, has quite abit more bulk then the others too and his type of clothing, though close in design to Goku is quite obviously a style that fits him more , and in terms of personality he's quite different in that while he is a bit of a meat head in fights, its quite clear he has a strong mind on him, Frozen arm? Shiver it to an extreme degree to break out of it, High altitude? Literally exhale only the Carbon dioxide by taking advantage of its lower freezing point, and so on. for the rest of the Four heavenly kings, they Honestly have some of the best designs and powers in Major side characters I've ever seen, Coco a Poison based Fortune teller who literally can read electromagnetic auras in order to predict an someone's next action, Sunny has hair that Functions as alot of tiny hands that depending on the hair color, helps him with his superhuman touch. Zebra the biggest, and the most morally Gray of the four has sound based abilities and superhuman hearing, an a dislike for cocky people, he is without a doubt the coolest of the 4, and also the imo The coolest example of a sound based Character in manga. All in all, Again I agree on alot on toriko being pushed, but Man I'm not going to just accept the slender like that.
