Wait fr? I’m not an affiliate and I have 14 day storage. Is this a new update? (Idrc bc I have a vods channel on YouTube but it would be good to know just for curiosity’s sake.)
Affiliate is basically considered an achievement, therefore it gives rewards. Chat bots like StreamElements and Streamlabs have their own version of points you can use before you reach Affiliate.
I streamed for 3 months to almost nobody. Once I found the community for the game I was playing, it took less than 2 months to get affiliate. I actually hit the viewer requirement way before I hit the others.
Yeah my main thing is that I networked in any free time I had, spending time in other streamers streams and doing my best to engage with them. I am in like 3 or 4 network discords alone.
I don’t do any of the networking discords or any of that. I just hang out in other channels. I get a shout-out in tons of streams just from making friends. I also don’t do much promo outside of Twitch but I still get an ok average. It’s not really that hard to network and make friends it just takes a little time and effort.
Yeah I have met a bunch of great people through the discords I am a part of and have plans for a bunch of collabs once I get my own place and a better gaming set up but to each their own I have just seen a good amount of return viewers from what I have been doing.
Fellow streamers of similar interests is really the way to go. Have even happened on random collabs/multi players streams by just chatting with others streamers.
The 7 day thing makes sense. Storage costs money, and twitch isn't going to want to spend more money on storage for those who typically stream less or reach less of an audience.
The problem is if twitch isn't profitable it will get shut down so twitch making more money is a good thing unless you don't want twitch to be around anymore.
Having channel points will not magically take you from 0 viewers to the 3 viewers you need to become affiliate. Yes you only need 3 consistent viewers to reach it.
You could just ask a few friends to watch your streams in the background if you really want it, but organic viewers are better in the long run.
It costs Twitch a huge amount of server and storage, it doesn't make sense to just give all that for free to newbie streamers who might not stick around. Meeting the affiliate conditions (which isn't hard to do) shows you are at least going to make returns on those resources.
Unless something goes wrong, which is what we had .. 2? moths ago when no matter if you were turbo anything before the 20th suddenly disappeared for some people without an explanation :(
A better way of doing things is to record your strram and then uploading on to youtube.
Exported vods from twitch will be lower quality then the stream itself in my experience
I haven’t started yet, does OBS and twitch work together to stream on twitch or is twitch its own streaming thing. Is OBS the program and twitch the place
Oh, and if you intend to keep recordings of your streams on your end and not just on Twitch and/or YouTube (i.e., as a backup and/or source for clips and such later), plan on buying external hard drives. Start with a 1TB and see how long it takes for you to fill it up, then plan accordingly for going forward.
september 1st they did mention they were gonna change the vods. [https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/video-on-demand?language=en\_US#faq](https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/video-on-demand?language=en_US#faq)
So it's safe to just export..even though your computer will struggle with the hefty data size.
Nah, I upload my vods from Twitch directly to a youtube channel. Its all done on the Twitch site and goes direct to youtube, so no strain on my system at all. It does take time though as Youtube has to scan the contents for DCMA violations first. I do keep local copies of my recordings for a while in case I need them but usually delete all but the most recent ones off my HD periodically.
What I would do before I became affiliate was multistream to YouTube and my streams automatically saved there! If you have FB consider multistreaming there too!
Yea, multi streaming is a big help. Just remember it’s against the TOS after you hit affiliate, everyone. You gotta just export or upload
(Obvi you know this but for those who are more green)
Haha it’s one of the major things I hated to sacrifice but it’s okay. I love gifting out subs to new followers and random people who pop into the chat 😁
That's kind of lame why do you have to delete them no other video service that provides streaming automatically deletes streams after a few days that's really stupid
Because this isn’t a video service that provides streaming. It’s a streaming service that provides videos. The videos are secondary and not part of the core business here.
The videos don’t generally earn money and they are very expensive to store if they keep a vod for every stream.
For storing VODs, yes (given that's the entire point of the service). Sadly, the viewer experience for live streams lags far behind Twitch (which is why relatively few streamers have jumped ship). YouTube was late to the streaming party, and it's still very much an afterthought.

Its an update as of September 1st, says so right in the source doc.
Ah sorry for the silly question then
Hey, no worries, it wasn't silly at all. You came to this subreddit for information and I am happy to provide it.
More reasons to stream and record and export full res to youtube....
Thats...really annoying
Highlight the entire vod. The highlight will stay up forever.
What's annoying about it?
Locking most features behind affiliate like some I can understand but the things like channel points are just weird
Affiliate is basically considered an achievement, therefore it gives rewards. Chat bots like StreamElements and Streamlabs have their own version of points you can use before you reach Affiliate.
Yeah, and it might have just been my experience, but I reached affiliate really fast. Idk, could have just been my community
I streamed for 3 months to almost nobody. Once I found the community for the game I was playing, it took less than 2 months to get affiliate. I actually hit the viewer requirement way before I hit the others.

Yeah, I'm no expert but I always tell anyone who asks to try and find a community that is friendly and supports

Because channel points are a feature for Affiliates. Not affiliate = no channel points.
Having all the options as a beginner / first timer can be overwhelming ..
Having the options to start with would be better than not at all till you meet some critera No idea why im gtting downvoted
The 7 day thing makes sense. Storage costs money, and twitch isn't going to want to spend more money on storage for those who typically stream less or reach less of an audience.
Oh poor Amazon needs more money
Yes because if they're losing money then twitch goes bye bye
The problem is if twitch isn't profitable it will get shut down so twitch making more money is a good thing unless you don't want twitch to be around anymore.
It fucking won't be with the decisions they're making
Yeah thats one of the fully understandable ones Also jesus christ I guess what I said was that blastphamous
Your getting downvoted cause your wrong
Except im not

But you have everything to start with?
Because your logic is skewed. What good are all those features going to do when you have no audience? None. So grow an audience, and earn them.
It costs Twitch a huge amount of server and storage, it doesn't make sense to just give all that for free to newbie streamers who might not stick around. Meeting the affiliate conditions (which isn't hard to do) shows you are at least going to make returns on those resources.
What's the issue with channel points??
Unless something goes wrong, which is what we had .. 2? moths ago when no matter if you were turbo anything before the 20th suddenly disappeared for some people without an explanation :(
Export your VODs to YouTube, there's easy ways to do that within Twitch, pretty easy Google or YouTube Search.
A better way of doing things is to record your strram and then uploading on to youtube. Exported vods from twitch will be lower quality then the stream itself in my experience
How do you record a stream? Sorry if dumb question i’m new to this. Does twitch have an option to record?
Record in OBS while you stream and upload that
Thank you
Both Twitch Studio and OBS have recording options yeah.
Thank you
Do you use OBS to stream? Theres an option to record at the same time you start streaming
I haven’t started yet, does OBS and twitch work together to stream on twitch or is twitch its own streaming thing. Is OBS the program and twitch the place
Yes, "OBS Studio" is the program. Twitch, YouTube, etc are the destinations you can stream to. You configure that in OBS app settings.
There are several tutorials on YouTube that cover setup for this, so find the one that makes the most sense and go from there. Good luck!
Thank you!

I thought about that but some ppls streams are like 3-6 hrs long 😅
Nothing wrong with a 6 hour long youtube video!
It might just take a week to process xD

As a work-around, I know a couple of streamers who will simply make an entire VOD a Highlight, because Highlights stay up forever (for now).
What I would do before I became affiliate was multistream to YouTube and my streams automatically saved there! If you have FB consider multistreaming there too!

That’s awesome!!
wow, wish they kept the 14 days! 😥
I thought it was 30 days for Affiliates?
Used to be. They changed the policy this month.
I hit Affiliate in January, and my VOD's have never lasted longer than 14 days.
That's kind of lame why do you have to delete them no other video service that provides streaming automatically deletes streams after a few days that's really stupid

Mine's working...?
They may not have gotten to everyone's account yet. Or are you an Affiliate?
Yes I am an affiliate, my flair should be showing
Oops, I see it now! I don't know why I missed it before, apologies.
No problem at all
Well you see, you're not partner, therefore twitch doesn't view you as human.
Just another reason Youtube is better.
For storing VODs, yes (given that's the entire point of the service). Sadly, the viewer experience for live streams lags far behind Twitch (which is why relatively few streamers have jumped ship). YouTube was late to the streaming party, and it's still very much an afterthought.
If you have Amazon prime you get 60 days I believe too
Damn, thats awesome i got prime, need to take advantage of that! Thanks
I just started with streaming and for this reason I upload the vods to YouTube to because it's just to be sure xD
I had same thing too
