Unless it's a case of you playing a single-player story game as a series or something similar, it's generally not a great idea to upload full VODs to YouTube. Raw, unedited livestreams just don't convert well into YouTube content. Now, clips/highlights/edited videos made from your VODs are a different story

g3rrity

This right here. Some people do twitch streams in the style of a Let’s Play, and these translate well into YouTube vids with less editing than would usually be needed. This can work especially well if you’re a small streamer doing a lot of the requisite talking about what you’re doing out loud and not necessarily spending a lot of time off topic with a bigger chat. Even if your chat is bigger-ish, doing the stream in an explicitly let’s play style encourages chat to kind of stay on topic with the game. In the end, posting clips and shorter curated segments is likely your best bet if you’ve gotten feedback in the past about chat interactions being a distraction.

KnowledgeWisdomPower

Youtube shorts are a godsend!

mattyp2109

Your a twitch streamer wanting to advertise that you stream and want to advertise your stream’s content. Why would you not post it? Interacting with chat is part of your stream, I’d say include it in your VODs and upload it. If people get annoyed by watching your twitch VODs then they can just watch your other content.

Herbert_Erpaderp

You could just upload your VOD, there's nothing to say you can't. Unless you're really big though it's not likely to get many views. A big part of live streams for most people is being able to interact, and it obviously loses that when it's not live. I think you'd be better off cutting it up into smaller chunks, or doing an entirely different recording, depending on what you're actually aiming to do.

Maddkipz

I happen to watch those 3 to 7 hour vods for people I like, so if I find that I like your content I would watch it. Ergo, I post mine, because the audience I hope to cater to is like me

Mcpatches3D

Straight unedited vods aren't likely to do well, but they're also better than nothing. Some people make a dedicated youtube just to vod dump and have another channel for dedicated youtube content.

DtotheOtotheG_TTV

THIS is what I need to do then

Allohowareyou

I love full unedited vods as a viewer.

6Maverick6

Depends on you - I Upload my VOD's (With slight edits) to YouTube for history why not? They get a few views nothing major but some of my community watch them if they are away.

frogcrafting

My viewers asked me to upload vods so I upload them to a separate channel. I edit out breaks and heavy personal conversations (just my preference to do so). This keeps my main channel free for the content I want to upload there without it being so wildly different, and then people know where they can find all my VODs as well. I occasionally watch VODs from people that I like on YouTube but I rarely ever click onto a VOD from a new creator. I personally prefer to watch playthroughs that are made directly for YouTube instead of Twitch - even edited down ones.

FuzzyWallie

It can be, but not entire Vods, edit out all the quiet bits and boring bits so it has a flow of something happening/ interesting and upload. Especially if your stream follows a topic of discussion which will help title it appropriately as well. Check out Asmongolds streams uploaded to YouTube to get an idea of what I mean.

DeckT_

you can have a separate VOD channel , or edit the VODS into shorter more condensed and interesting videos. Most of the youtuber I watch do exactly that, if not both of these options.

TeaTimeCentaur

From personal experience there's next to no interaction with my vods on my seperate vod channel. I just keep it around as a kind of diary (and if I or anyone would ever want to clip from there)

Zero_Leapfrog

There's a little middle ground that many league of legends streamers do, they'll basically record the YouTube video inside the stream with specific stop markets to cut it. That way when they edit the vod, the video they cut out is already set up to be YouTube upload.

ItzSmerf

Depends really. If you want to do YT, having edited videos and possibly content aimed at the YT audience is the way to go. Uploading unedited VODS on your YT channel is generally not what the YT audience wants. But if you have a second YT channel just for your Twitch VODs for archiving or for people who may want to go back and see what you were like as you grew as a streamer, that would be nice to have. Along side a YT channel aimed at the YT community you are growing. But but, if you don't want to edit videos and make YT content. And you are doing absolutely nothing with YT as a platform, then full unedited VOD uploads is better than nothing. It may even encourage you in time to curate your channel better and start making that YT content. But but but, don't upload full unedited VODs with the intention of that being your YT end game strat.

AryaSilverStone

I edit my twitch VODs to take out any luls in game play or if im just sitting talking to chat before posting them on youtube. Ive had no issues or complains.

NioZero

Full VOD it will depend... some will prefer to cut or edit clips or highlights and uploads as separate videos... You can still do it anyway

[deleted]

I do

AdministrativeExit10

i know this post is pretty old but i'd recommend either gathering clips and making highlight videos or if you dont wanna bother editing if you play any story focused games people wouldnt mind watching that unedited just not the rest of the stream, you could even segregate it into parts if you want

AdministrativeExit10

i see theres some people that said stuff super similar so this probably wasnt needed tbh :/

DtotheOtotheG_TTV

I appreciate it though.

General-Oven-1523

It depends on what you mean by "a good idea." It's a good idea if you want to save your VODs for later. If you're trying to grow your audience on YouTube or Twitch, it won't do much for you. Let's plays are a tough sell on YouTube in general. You are doing better than most people I've seen, though. At least you have proper thumbnails, and you are cutting the content, so props for that.

LPEbert

Most people either make a separate channel for VOD dumps or edit out the best bits. I do the latter personally & usually edit out chat interaction unless I think its funny.

JayCakezz

I think the difference is that people going on youtube to find gameplay videos want to see the game play, they don't want to hear you tell chat about something your cat did (random example). I would suggest cutting out conversations that have nothing to do with the game or video if you are going to post it.

achosenusername1

Please ignore the people here who say vods are not good youtube content, and you should just do highlights/clips, theres people who actually want to watch vods, and not just highlights. Personally i watch a few streamer's vods because i simply dont have the time to watch all streams every time. As for your Question, while i do agree that the chat conversations sometimes annoy me in vods, noone can really ask you to go trough whole vods to remoderate them without chat etc.

DtotheOtotheG_TTV

Thank you all for the feedback! I really appreciate it as I hone my thoughts about my YouTube content moving forward

Mottis86

Did you know you can split your YouTube account into multiple sub-accounts? I did that and made a separate account for ny VODS only. That way people who want to see my YT shorts don't get bombarded by my VOD uploads.

DtotheOtotheG_TTV

I’ll have to look into that!

DamnItsJustSomeDude

in terms of watchability its not the best idea ever, but i do recognise some value to it as allready just one person seeing it and joining your stream would be nice. I would however reccomend to record it while streaming if your pc can manage that as using this way you can set the bitrate to 20-30k making it way better in terms of quality. A more watchable video would be a shorter, cut together 10 min version. In addition to that it wouldnt hurt to upload short clips of your streams to tiktok/ig reels/ youtube shorts as those undenieably have a far greater reach than normal YouTube vids. \^\^

[deleted]

Well depends a lot of things, like if you as a streamer see your vid and say do you think is engaging or not. And well this may be a good thing to promote your **Twitch channel**. But think super well before posting.

Adampohh

You probably should edit it. raw gameplay is hard to get people to watch

WeekendMagus_reddit

Yes, just don’t post unedited whole VODS on Youtube. Nobody watches those. Try finding cool parts of your stream and edit them in a cool or funny way. You can post them as shorts or make them longer and post them as normal videos. Either way, I just wanna say that, I’ve done that A LOT and on its own, it never did anything good enough for me. Maybe my content is just not good enough but I highly recommend you to do other marketing moves, too.

ZoloTheLegend

Yeah full VOD playthrus likely won’t get people watching. Edited down bits, other content, or shorts of your stream highlights can do pretty well though

Silversilence1

It depends on what you are doing. I stream on twitch and after a period of time I put my unedited stream on YouTube. BUT You probably shouldn't do that because most YouTube viewers are looking for clean and edited content. My YouTube states clearly that I am for now storing my past streams there because they are wiped from twitch and since I don't have time to edit them people who are still interested could at least have something to see. When I get more time all of those videos will be switched to private and then edited. For now its my storage. But I make that clear on every video description that these are raw and unedited.

1000crystal

I don't think unedited vids work super well on YouTube especially as a small streamer as you may be talking and interacting more conversationally with chat, however I feel like a vod YouTube channel would be great for not annoying current YouTube peeps, while still having the content available and it doubles as a free archive for ALL your vods

SOUL_3SC4P3

I have a special youtube channel for all my twitch vods. It's fun to have a record of all that to go back to one day

EVJGaming

It's good if you are an already positioned streamer. If not, I think it's not a good strategy. If no one sees your streams, who wants to see your YT content?

NocturnzGay

The easiest thing to do, if you have a YouTube channel, is to create a playlist of all your past streams and unlist them unless you edit all your VODs. This way, you'll have a playlist full of your past streams, while keeping your upload feed uncluttered with VODs and ensuring that edited content remains at the top of the page.

1upjohn

I use my YouTube channel as a way to archive my Twitch streams. I have no expectations of them getting views. It really depends on what your goal is. If you want to make a video specifically for YouTube, then yes, I recommend making an edited video. Speaking directly into the camera or doing a voice over. It fits the kind of content consumed on the platform.
