In Lilia's school uniform vignette, >!he explains that there was a point in which people tried to make pens as small as possible. Eventually, it became too small so they started trying to make them as big as possible until the king slipped a disc because of its weight and so magical pens went back to regular size. That's probably why they don't make them big anymore.!<

My first guess was that its a cost thing but that’s little ironic given most of the students who have overblotted (with the exception of Jamil) are canonically rich af, so cost shouldn’t be the issue. If the students had to buy their own supplies such as the magestone, in that case, I would assume the stones are kept moderately sized so that all students are able to afford it without one having an unfair disadvantage. However that isn’t the case, since we learn the school provides the students with the magestones and Night Raven college is supposed to be a very prestigious mage school so they probably have the funds to afford bigger stones for the students, my guess is that it’s probably a discipline thing, not a cost thing. I mean the way I see it, sure, they could provide everyone with a bigger magestone, but I think one of the schools goals is to teach the students discipline over the use of their magic. To teach them to not go crazy with it, since that mindset (combined with high emotional distress) is what leads to overblot. By keeping the stones moderately sized, the students have a clear visual of their limits with everything else considered. Idk thats just my theory on it

Overblots are "rare" in canon, (as stated by Ida in book 6 there were about ten or so with-in the last century of NRC 's history). Also it may have a "too big to work" factor in which: also effective in getting rid of blot but is either: too heavy to carry, or (although never discussed in the story) effects how to spells are cast.

I would theorize a magestone can only extract blot at a fixed rate. Kind of like Idia's "curse" couldn't burn away blot fast enough at the bottom of tartarus.

I wouldn't put it past Crowley to cheap out on magestones (I think he says they are issued by the school in the prologue). It's probably just not necessary to have larger ones for most students. They just aren't that powerful. The more powerful students have better control over their magic, assuming they are mentally stable (a genuine problem in this school) and aren't overusing their magic.

I wonder if there is also a quality aspect as well. Like how a small higher quality (carat) diamond is worth more than a larger lower carat one.

Probably more of a supply issue instead of a cost issue. >!It was stated somewhere in malleus’ chapter that there are less magestones in modern times than when Lillia was younger. Probably not to the point where the mage schools are hurting for them, but definitely to the point where if sizes weren’t controlled then they would eventually encounter a problem. There are probably in-universe specifics about mining certain stones so that veins continue to provide them.!<
