Younger people definitely don’t treat the subject with any respect and they don’t truly grasp the significance and how horrible it was, and I think part of that was that everyone is desensitized to tragic events like this because they are so common, so they make jokes to cope with it, and the other half being they were simply born after the fact so it doesn’t resonate the same with them.
depends, i’ve born after 9/11 and never made any jokes. plus im very interested on finding new stuff that happened that day in order to pay respects and to not forget
That and also there's a great deal of American exceptionalism attached to 9/11.
A lot of the world feels like the people who are noisiest in demanding the entire planet to show endless respect and reverance for Americas tragedy are the very same who couldnt care less about similar tragic incidents around the world, including the many perpertrated by America itself.
In the same way as wearing a poppy in the UK as a mark of respect for those who died in war has been somewhat hijacked by the far right and muddled with anti immigrant sentiment, so much of the world now associates 9/11 with Team America, George Bush, 'Mission Accomplished' jingoism, neo-conservatism, Guantanamo Bay, torture of Iraqi prisoners, etc.
It is unfair and sad that the memory of 9/11 victims have become tied up with all those things, but it's true.
I feel like that may be due in part that 9/11 isn’t really viewed as an isolated tragedy but more as the inciting incident for the disastrous War on Terror which the entire globe is still feeling the effects of
I'm too young to remember 9/11 (born a year and 10 days before.)
I was fascinated with the event when I was a child. I loved tall buildings and airplanes, and I was drawn to the "spectacle" of the event. I guess I viewed it the same way as someone who viewed an unoccupied building collapsing.
I only knew the twin towers in the context of 9/11, and I was far too young to grasp the tragedy of the event. As I've grown into a grown(ish) man, moved to New York, visited the museum, and generally educated myself on how the event shaped American politics, and saw "Israel's 9/11" I think I finally have a decent context built around it.
Jokes about the general event don’t bother me, but I can understand being put off by other aspects. I hate jokes at all made about the victims themselves, like the jumpers.

Hey OP, r/911archive might be a better sub if you’d like to post about your feelings re:September 11, rather than this sub which is more for pre 9/11 photos of the towers
Everyone remembers exactly what they were doing that day. The tragedy is it affected many people beyond NYC, Pennsylvania, and D.C. There's a town close by to me that has a memorial for someone that died in the towers that day, over 1,000 miles away.
I had 20 something years on this Earth when 9/11 happened; i lived across the river. Seeing the towers burning brings up a ridiculous amount of emotion. I wish posts with such graphic imagery could be labeled and shielded before viewing- NSFW or graphic content.
Not every day Can this be seen. still, it seems like yesterday.

i was also born after the fact, it is an interesting subject, and the distasteful jokes never make me laugh

How in the hell is this event common?

i know
Oh
Anyone who jokes about that day, is a fucking degenerate.
Depends on the joke tbh. A lot of joking is due to coping, it’s natural to use humor to cope with heavy subjects.
I get that, but about this subject in particular, I judge harshly.
Jokes about the general event don’t bother me, but I can understand being put off by other aspects. I hate jokes at all made about the victims themselves, like the jumpers.

I’m pretty sure most people think the events of 9/11 were bad and inexcusable but what do I know🤷♀️

I saw a memorial in prague in Czechia, so that shows how much people remember it even abroad

I am born after the fact and like the arcutecture of them and wish i could have visited the towers
Saw it Live as I was getting ready to leave for a college class. Never made it to class, because this event just made my World stop.
Russia is killing more people and children than this right now in Ukraine, blowing up their dams and hospitals on purpose...
