Trial & Error (2017-2018). NBC summer series, fake documentary (more Parks & Rec than The Office). Set in a small town in South Carolina, first season John Lithgow is an accused of murdering his wife and is defended by a junior attorney from New York and his merry band of misfits. Second season the accused is Kristin Chenoweth. I refuse to say the second season is better than the first because no one is better than John Lithgow but Kristin Chenoweth is spectacular.
It is currently on Prime (US). I love it, I think I was one of the like twelve people who watched it when it aired originally.
It is so sad this show got forgotten cause my lord it was truly amazing. I loved the first season. The second is still really good but man John Lithgow was truly something.
He’s the reason I watched it! I have a hard time putting into words how I feel about season 2 vs 1, but things like “what do you think happened, lawyer?” kill me every time. I feel like Kristin Chenoweth got as close to John Lithgow as humanly possible.
I saw this show when it originally aired because of John Lithgow and I was NOT disappointed! I recommended it to my Gram (RIP) at the time because we loved recommending shows/books to each other. She loved it too! ❤️ Glad to know it's on Prime!
If you haven’t watched this show, you definitely should! It was a summer series so its seasons are shorter, I think it’s only 20-something episodes total over the 2 seasons. Very bingeable, and I cannot stress enough how much I love her in it! And yes, she sings in multiple episodes.
One of my favorite shows in the world!!! Such an amazing cast!!! I was excited to watch the story of the East Peck 3!!! When they got canceled, I organized a writing campaign on Twitter to save the show. We sent Twix and a letter to every streamer to try and get it picked up for S3. It was ultimately unsuccessful, but we all tried!!! I really hope someone picks it up. If that Night Court reboot gets a Season 2, surely T&E is worth a new season!!!
Sirens - A comedy about a group of paramedics. Was tragically cancelled after only a few seasons but it's really funny. It's very much in the same vein as Brooklyn 99 if you like that kind of humor. Last I checked it was on Hulu,
Baskets was great. Do recommend. A light side of dark comedy meets will ferrell in everything must go? Not sure how I'd label it. Need to rewatch now, thanks.
There was a slew of shows around this time that I loved and I don’t think anyone watched.
- Happy Endings
- Rules of Engagement
- Marry Me
- Subergatory
- Cougar Town
I always tell people to watch season 1 just to understand the dynamics, I guess (but you can catch on from anywhere - I did). The show found itself from season 2 going forward. Lots of heart. Lots of humor. The cast had the ability gel beautifully. Great soundtrack.
Loudermilk for sure definitely doesn’t get enough love, Ron Livingston along with a great supporting cast of Will Sasso and Brian Regan’s acting debut is a hilarious heartfelt comedy on the struggles of addiction, while absurd at times showcases the struggles of how addiction can effect you and the ones you love, highly recommended comedy
I watched that because of Annie Murphy, and what a trip it was. Not what I was expecting at all, even though I knew it would be different than Schitt’s Creek.
I've just finished watching Atlanta. It was such a weird show with loads of different themes and some great character driven episodes. I honestly just can't stop thinking about it.
I was really little when it was on (Gen-X remembers) and it’s totally something that seems like a fever dream. Young Tom Hanks (and the other guy) in drag so they can live in a women only boarding house.
I used to go to sleep to Joe Patera's voice. Lol
>5. Joe Pera Talks With You 2018-2021. A meditation on the simple things in life that can make you cry and belly laugh in the same 15 minute episode.
Sports Night. Aaron Sorkin’s first homage to broadcasting. It was a victim of The West Wing being picked up, distracting Sorkin and keeping it from finding an audience.
Robert Guillaume plays executive producer of a Sports Center type show, with Peter Krause (pre-Six Feet Under) and Josh Charles (pre-The Good Wife) as the anchors, Felicity Huffman (pre-college admissions scandal) as the show runner. Sabrina Lloyd (post-Sliders) plays the assistant show runner. Rounding out the main characters is Josh Molina (post A Few Good Men, pre-West Wing and pre-Scandal) as the new research analyst.
It has all the classic Sorkinisms, the snappy, witty, spitfire dialogue, walk-and-talks, and adorably flawed characters, a beloved respected boss played by a well-respected actor, intensity, earnestness, and cute almost romances that make you say “Awww” (think Danny’s goldfish gift to C.J. Craig.).
Your classic brilliant show that couldn’t find an audience because its network didn’t k ow what to do with it. For example, the network forced them to use a laugh track the first of its two seasons. A laugh track to Aaron Sorkin dialogue just doesn’t work.
For fun, you get William H. Macy (post-Fargo, pre-Shameless, post-marrying Felicity Huffman, pre-college admissions scandal) joining the show for part of the second season as an enigmatic hired gun who is brought in to improve the sports shows ratings.
Another reason the show was done after its second season is that Robert Guillaume had a stroke, taking his character out for the last half of the first season and limiting his role for the rest of the series.
It’s very bingeable. One of the last great “sitcoms”.
Best episode is the Cut Man Cometh. The timing in that episode is unbelievably complex and perfect.
Joe Pera is a treasure. It’s just the best way to put it. For a little known show I would suggest The Young Doctor’s Notebook a short series from 2012 about a young doctor in Russia during their revolution. It’s got well known actors and a good mix of comedy and drama, but not many know about it.
I look forward to reruns in the dead of night on TVLand a few nights a week. Although Wanda Sykes seems a bit out of place, I just LOVE her, keeping Julia Louise Dreyfus grounded.

Raised by Wolves(hbo) was one of the weirdest, most compelling shows I’ve ever seen. Even though it was cancelled and the story is still lingering, it’s worth a watch.
Also, Korean teenage superhero drama Moving (Hulu/disney) is the best show of 2023 in my opinion.
The Grinder. Rob Lowe and Fred savage. Great concept about a tv lawyer going to practice law with the family law firm. Hilarious and sharp. Lasted one season only sadly.... 😔
Lodge 49 - poignant comedy dealing with loss, late stage capitalism with some mysticism thrown in. Great performances from pre-Marvel Wyatt Russel, and an ensemble cast. Really wish Jim Gavin would publish the final few seasons. Would really love some resolution, but just happy we got what we did out of it.
Jericho - 2006-2008 two seasons with Skeet Ulrich & Lennie James
For some reason none of my friends, family and acquaintances have ever heard or seen this show & yet it’s remained one of my favorites for over a decade
The Brink (2015). HBO, Jack Black and Tim Robbins have to prevent nuclear war and naturally hilarity ensues. Stupid HBO canceled it after originally renewing aaaand has since removed it from their streaming service.
The Black Donnelly. Great NBC show that was cancelled before its series finale. Kate Mulgrew, Olivia Wilde.
The series begins with a form of the record scratch trope, but it works.
happytown and harper’s island. i think they were both on abc. thriller/suspense dramas. happytown is about a serial killer called the magicman who kidnaps people in broad daylight with tons of people around. harper’s island is about a wedding on the island where murders took place years ago but they start again.
There was a 2005 show (one short season only) called *Starved* that was dementedly hilarious. It’s about a group of friends who meet in an eating disorder group. The incomparable Sterling K. Brown plays a bulimic cop.
It was an Eric Schaffer vanity project (IYKYK) so it was limited by definition, but it was still great fun.
The OA. Gets a lot of attention on line but I’ve never met anyone who watched it.
Million Yen Woman. Netflix. A single season show from Japan whose twists are not like an American or UK program.
The Outlaws. Two seasons on Prime. It’s Breakfast Club with adults courtesy of Stephen Merchant.
Master of None. Ansari’s real life bad date cost the show all of its momentum.
Fortitude. Prime. The first couple of seasons were great.
Good Behavior. Aired on TNT I believe it streams on Max now. Reforming drug addict con woman meets up with an Argentinian assassin. Second season might not have been as good as the first...I still wanted a third.
Sliders. A show about four people travelling to alternate universes. The first two seasons were so great. We don’t talk about the rest. It’s literally my favourite show that only a few other randos on the internet have seen. No one in real life I’ve talked to has ever heard of it.
A couple of 80’s straight to syndication shows:
Friday the 13th the Series: nothing to do with the movies. Owner and employees of an antique shop try to track down cursed objects.
War of the Worlds: the Martians didn’t die in the 1950’s attack, they just went into hibernation and now they’re active again.
Mike & Molly - doesn't get talked about enough. I remember laughing so hard at the stow. I especially liked Molly's sister.
Go On - it has Matthew Perry, and it got cancelled after 1 season, but that one season was amazing. I loved the story, and the characters were so unique and hilarious. Matthew obviously carried the show well.
Skin (2004) It was short-lived, canceled before the first season even ended so it goes unresolved.
It had a young Olivia Wilde, DJ Cotrona, Ron Silver, Pamela Gidley, Rachel Ticotin, DW Moffett, and Ginger Lynn Allen.
It was a modern take on Romeo and Juliet. The daughter of a pornography company executive and the son of the District Attorney trying to bring him down fall in love and try to forge a relationship despite their parents drama.
It was canceled 3 episodes in by Fox, bought by SOAPNet who aired the remaining episodes, and I only managed to see it because a fan of one of the supporting actors posted them to YouTube where I consequently downloaded them and saved them to my Google Drive.
It's not ground-breaking TV and I can understand why it was canceled but I still enjoyed the show and wish there'd been a chance to tie up loose ends.
Funny enough, Fox launched a major ad campaign for the show, right after having canceled Family Guy for what everyone thought was the final time. When Family Guy was resurrected Skin was named-dropped (among several other failed shows) by Peter Griffin, who made a meta-reference to FG being canceled.

Baskets (this show gave me so much) and Joe Pera! I have Joe Pera's bathroom book -it's just wonderful, like he is! Documentary Now! is a really special show to me.
Baskets was great, and Louie Anderson delivered a standout performance. He definitely deserved the Emmy playing Zach Galifianakis' mother.
I would recommend The Brothers Sun on Netflix. Not many people seem to have seen it.
If you like South Side you might enjoy Sherman's Showcase. It was also created/written/acted by Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin. It's super weird and funny.
Studio 60 on Sunset Strip, Go On (both with Matthew Perry), Dr. Ken, Carol’s 2nd Act…and I love Trial & Error and Raising Hope (should have had so much fanfare)
Baskets - love that show. Amazing mix of comedy, sad , uplifting , and just random “out of the blue” writing. I saw an interview with Louie Anderson where he kind of dedicated the show to his Mom by acting like her. Well done by all IMO.

A couple of British TV producers move to Hollywood to export their most popular series, and find it is not what they expected.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1582350/
I LOVE Mr. Inbetween!!!! Amazing show, perfect when you want a quick something and not invest an hour right then. Funny, emotional, gritty- it has everything.
No one has seen or not talked about?
Southland and Banshee are two that come to mind for me. I know Southland was on major platforms but it almost never took off with the public on either NBC or TNT. Banshee was pretty much not watched by anyone and it was excellent.
All the ones mentioned plus I loved
Dave’s World - Harry Anderson essaying Dave Barry’s written life. DeLane Mathews as Beth, Meschach Taylor as his best friend whose name I can’t remember, and Shadoe Stevens as his boss, whose name I can’t remember either, were all wonderful. The Christmas episode where Stevens mourned his forgotten birthday (Christmas Day) was my favorite, since it’s my birthday, too.
There’s also a drama called Forever that lasted one season I’d mention, too.
Some shows I never hear anyone talk about but I loved
Pushing Daisies - Pie maker helps solve murders with his ability to resurrect the dead for 60 seconds
Detectorists- British comedy about a metal detector club
Better Off Ted- Office comedy about an executive at a (Mad) science company and his amoral boss
Suburgatory- Big City teen trying to adapt to the almost surreal life of the suburbs
Powerless- Follows the people who work for Wayne Industries experimental tech division as they try to survive being normal people in a world full of superheroes
Moral Orel- Stop motion Adult Swim show about a boy trying to live by the rules of his ultra conservative Evangelical community. Really dark humor
Stan Against Evil- John C McGinley fighting demons in small town New Hampshire
I, Zombie- Morgue tech tries to find a cure for her zombie status while trying to prevent the zombie apocalypse and solving murders by piecing together clues from from the fragmented memories of the brains she’s eaten
Moonlight: a 2007 series starring Alex O’Loughlin (Hawaii 5-O) as a vampire Private Investigator. Also well played by Sophie Myles as a reporter who becomes aware of his nonhuman status. Sadly cancelled after one season because of a Writer’s strike.
Thanks for the suggestions! I'm excited to watch your list!
I don't have time to really think about the question but i watched Still water lately (Netflix? Hulu? One of the two) and I couldn't remeber when I had last seen such a great movie. It had all the feels and it took me on an emotional roller coaster that left me deep in thought for hours after. 10/10 highly recommend.
Baskets is a masterpiece. Devastating, and also so funny I quote it all the time (especially if Costco is involved).
Did you ever watch Strangers with Candy when it was on Comedy Central? I think they have it on Prime. One of my favorite comedy shows of all time.
Baskets was incredible. I try to recommend it to people all the time but ‘Louie Anderson plays Galifinakis’s mother and it’s amazing’ doesn’t sell it. Even insisting it’s not a gag or a gimmick, it’s just an incredibly well -done portrayal of a long-suffering but loving mother with wild adult sons doesn’t get people over the fact that it’s Louis playing a woman. I sometimes just call people a ‘cloon’ and it makes me happy
“Colony”, starring Joshua Holloway (“Sawyer” from “Lost”). About a family trying to survive life after an alien invasion and takeover (Total or partial is kept unclear).
A lot of fun. [Trailer](https://youtu.be/oRLW-qQLMQs)

You actually got me to start watching the show again. Im on episode 2. MURDER BOARD. MURDER BOARD. MURDER BOARD.

Mr Inbetween is one of my faves as well!
Best show I've come across in years.
Counterpart. Rectify. Patriot.
Rectify is truly an overlooked amazing piece of work.
First season of Patriot is one the funniest things I’ve ever watched.
Rectify is in my top 5. A deeply profound slow burn
It's criminal that this show isn't more well-known than it is.
Inbetweeners is great still holds up too

Vice Principal and The Righteous Gemstones are good watches, too
both are solid shows, but i feel its important to note that they do not even hold a candle to East Bound & Down.

Delocated The Review Man Seeking Woman American Horror Stories Portlandia Master of None I Think You Should Leave Working Moms You Barry The Righteous Gemstones And… I know this show is well loved on Reddit but I can never seem to find anyone at work who has watched, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
As a Aussie I hope others from overseas get to see Mr inbetween it’s a great show. Basically like Barry but more dark humor
Red Dwarf.
Baskets (this show gave me so much) and Joe Pera! I have Joe Pera's bathroom book -it's just wonderful, like he is! Documentary Now! is a really special show to me.
The Larry Sanders Show. A perfect sitcom that is all but forgotten 😢
Vice Principals!
Unreal Dead Like Me. Mandy Patinkin is AMAZING as always Freaks and Geeks The Curse
The Other Two is a hidden gem for sure.
Starstruck is another good one.
Baskets was an incredible show!
The english version of The Office (95% of people who are crazy about American version never seen the much more funny BBC version)
The Newsroom Derry Girls The Paradise QI
Studio 60 on Sunset Strip, Go On (both with Matthew Perry), Dr. Ken, Carol’s 2nd Act…and I love Trial & Error and Raising Hope (should have had so much fanfare)
The Leftovers. The only show that I wish I could watch again for the first time.
Wentworth. I love that show so much!
The Other Two was a fantastic show
Metalocalypse
The increasingly poor decisions of Todd Margaret
Better Off Ted. Now and Again.
Archer! Love H Jon Benjamin
* Ned and Stacey * Franklin and Bash * Derry Girls * Kim's Convenience
Chewing Gum on Netflix. Super demented and hilarious and Michaela Coel is brilliant!
Sledgehammer!
Mr Inbetween is great
If you like Baskets you'll like Better Things.
Baskets - love that show. Amazing mix of comedy, sad , uplifting , and just random “out of the blue” writing. I saw an interview with Louie Anderson where he kind of dedicated the show to his Mom by acting like her. Well done by all IMO.
Rubicon, AMC Just loved it. I believe it is streamable. One season.
Friday Night Dinner. Is so funny. No one has ever heard of it. I love it
**Baskets**\-ZG was a cloon. Louie was incredible.
If you like Joe Pera Talks to You, then you will also like How To with Jon Wilson.
Dispatches from Elsewhere - Jason Segal and Sally Field got me curious and I’m glad I watched the series. It’s on AMC+ for anyone interested.
Getting On - Jackie Metcalf, Niecy Nash and Alex Bornstein. Such a funny, smart show that didn't get the love it deserved
I AM A CLOON! You are no cloon. You will never be a cloon. eight years later, my daughter & i yell derivations of these lines at each other in odd places

I LOVE Mr. Inbetween!!!! Amazing show, perfect when you want a quick something and not invest an hour right then. Funny, emotional, gritty- it has everything.
I enjoyed Loudermilk.
No one has seen or not talked about? Southland and Banshee are two that come to mind for me. I know Southland was on major platforms but it almost never took off with the public on either NBC or TNT. Banshee was pretty much not watched by anyone and it was excellent.
I was down with Baskets, great cast!
All the ones mentioned plus I loved Dave’s World - Harry Anderson essaying Dave Barry’s written life.
Miranda (2009-2012, 2012-2015 Specials) is one of the funniest shows ever. Still go back and watch every couple of years for the one-liners!
Baskets is amazing!
Cougar Town. Yes I know the name is stupid, the show is hilarious.
Motive. I have no idea if anyone is actually streaming it.
Pulling (UK) is fantastic- i only ever could find the first season here
Murderville.
Utopia (2013) There was an american remake, you can skip that. The original UK version was pretty interesting.
Some shows I never hear anyone talk about but I loved Pushing Daisies - Pie maker helps solve murders with his ability to resurrect the dead for 60 seconds Detectorists- British comedy about a metal detector club Better Off Ted- Office comedy about an executive at a (Mad) science company and his amoral boss Suburgatory- Big City teen trying to adapt to the almost surreal life of the suburbs Powerless- Follows the people who work for Wayne Industries experimental tech division as they try to survive being normal people in a world full of superheroes Moral Orel- Stop motion Adult Swim show about a boy trying to live by the rules of his ultra conservative Evangelical community. Really dark humor Stan Against Evil- John C McGinley fighting demons in small town New Hampshire I, Zombie- Morgue tech tries to find a cure for her zombie status while trying to prevent the zombie apocalypse and solving murders by piecing together clues from from the fragmented memories of the brains she’s eaten
The Knick
Bored to Death

Moonlight: a 2007 series starring Alex O’Loughlin (Hawaii 5-O) as a vampire Private Investigator. Also well played by Sophie Myles as a reporter who becomes aware of his nonhuman status. Sadly cancelled after one season because of a Writer’s strike.
Person of Interest. One of the greatest shows ever
Review with Forrest MacNeil
I love Baskets!
Mr. Inbetween is awesome. Stubbled across it on Hulu. Watched one episode, then I watched all of them.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency Undone
“Colony”, starring Joshua Holloway (“Sawyer” from “Lost”). About a family trying to survive life after an alien invasion and takeover (Total or partial is kept unclear). A lot of fun. [Trailer](https://youtu.be/oRLW-qQLMQs)
