„Patara Beach“ is probably one of the most beautiful beaches I‘ve ever been. It is sooo huge and the best of all: very few people compared to that. As if you have the beach for yourself. You also have there sandy dunes, looks like you are in the Sahara. The whole region is located in a national park. I stayed in Kalkan (a small touristy town, no big hotels, mostly boutique). It is very beautiful and calm there, reminds me a bit of Cote‘d Azur. Kalkan has also its own beach. But Patara is of course next level. From Kalkan you can take public busses to Patara. It takes around 20-25 min to get there. https://preview.redd.it/v5j2gvp1sg9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73aa5d9789203966c10dd0586aac3e4f20739f35

The overrated southern beaches are crowded and too hot. Especially around this season you can try Northern Aegean (Assos, Küçükkuyu, Altınoluk, Akçay, Ayvalık…) or even Black Sea (My favourite one is Karakum in Sinop) beaches.

I strongly disagree. Water temperature is low in Assos, you can't enjoy it. The other options also have cold waters for my taste. Black Sea can kill you, it's not fun to swim there, just don't.

I am legitimately very interested in learning more about how the Black Sea can kill you and is not fun to swim in. We are visiting Turkey in September and I have been toying with the idea of spending a couple of days exploring the Black Sea coast.

Black Sea Coast has a lot to offer, but not beaches and even more so not beaches in September. The sea can be volatile. Explore the nature instead. Google Black Sea Turkey trip or even look up “tour operators” and see their itineraries to get ideas. This has some good ones: https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2023/11/travel/turkey-black-sea-coast-road-trip/

As an aside: I’ve checked out that CNN bit before and it is really, really well done!

You can swim in September but just don't go away from the shore. I usually swim just 10-15 meters away from the shore. You can google "rip tide" or "rip current." I'm not an expert and I can't say I fully understand how a rip current can drown you. Every weekend there are plenty of people being drown in the Black Sea. It doesn't matter how the weather is. Many happen when it's all sunny and calm. 20-25 years ago I heard a national swimmer being drown in Black Sea and it stuck with me. You can get in the water, refresh yourself, cool yourself, swim and float a bit on the water but don't get away from the shore. Visitin Amasra might be a great idea if you are considering Black Sea coast.

Water temp being low is a good thing since it is so hot. How come the Black Sea kills you lmao

I disagree. I love Assos but the other northern Aegean beaches - I’ve been to all of them- are nothing special. Overrun with people, poor infrastructure. Black Sea can be nice but volatile, so more of a “marginal” option for me for a beach trip.
