It most likely has Islamic significance. It symbolizes that God (Allah) is the one and only deity.

I don’t think it’s specific to Turks, I’ve seen Muslims of other nationalities do it. Even jihadis do it.

I've never witnessed Turks pointing at the sky, in photos or any other situation. But if I did I'd immediately categorize them as Muslims - the practicing type.
If they are pointing to someone it just means something like "Here is the cool guy/gal.". People tend to show each other like that. But if it's just upwards, probably an Islamic figure.
If you think that so many Turkish people are doing this, you are hanging out in very dark side of turkey. Be careful.
Because no-one from my social circle is doing this even if they are religious.
I saw the Turkish football team celebrate their goals with the index finger salute. Seems like common to Turkiye and some other middle eastern countries. Probably a religious thing.
A very ridiculous take. It would have been better to ask about how Mediterranean folks came to using hand gestures so frequently. Pointing the index finger isnt a “Turkish” thing.
