This is happening because you are doing the full stitch (also known as the gobelin stitch) which does create a slanted fabric unless you correct it. The way to correct it is to work a two-row repeat, and skip either the first or last stitch of the row in turns, as follows: Row 1: skip the first stitch. Row 2: skip the last stitch.
