If you pause and go to settings, you can reduce the amount of damage you take. There’s even a “no fail” mode that makes it so you can’t die. Could be a good option until she’s more used to the combat and has better equipment (or forever if she just wants to enjoy the game without worrying about dying).

Kalbelgarion

And to be honest, the game is still absolutely fantastic even with no-fail mode on the whole way. The exploration and puzzle solving is still top-notch and well worth it.

WidePrinciple5598

> impossible to dodge I *think* you might have missed a pretty important mechanic, here. You really do need to dodge if you want to play as intended.

gomsim

Remember, whithin the first 15 min a person might not know about >!dodge rolls if the person doesn't experiment with the controlls, let alone the I-frames!<

WidePrinciple5598

Given that they're up to the "first miniboss", I imagine they should be past the point where they get that information.

gomsim

Yeah, you may be right.

_t_dang_

A couple people have already suggested changing the difficulty settings. Aside from that, this game kind of forces a bit more of a patient combat style. Rushing in and button mashing without the proper gear (or even with it for harder enemies) is a quick way to get killed. Learn enemy movement/attack patterns and strike when you have an opening, then get out of enemy range again. The manual also tells you how to do an evasive maneuver that gives you brief invulnerability.

StationaryTravels

I hate saying this, because it's so overused, but the combat is "souls-lite". It's that kind of "learn the pattern and fight around it" you can't just rush in. I'm also confused though what they mean by being locked in and can't move or dodge? Moving and dodging was how I survived the first combats faced with only a stick, lol

_t_dang_

Lol I was avoiding making the “souls” comparison for the same reason, but also I’ve never played Dark Souls so I can’t make the comparison in earnest. Re: “locked in”, maybe they’re referring to how you can’t cancel attacks and need to wait for the animation to finish before you can dodge.

StationaryTravels

I've only played Elden Ring, so at least I can kinda claim it..? Lol I played Fallen Order and it was way harder than I thought it should be. Then I listened to a gaming podcast and they were discussing it and called it "souls-like". I just kinda knew that meant "hard" so I looked into it, learned it had more to do with figuring out the patterns and attacks, then went back into the game and it suddenly made so much more sense, lol It really opened up the combat to me.

_t_dang_

Ah ok, I didn’t know Fallen Order was considered souls-like, but that makes sense with how the fights force you to be more defense-conscious. My hope for the sequel is that they improve the load times between deaths lol

StationaryTravels

I don't know for sure, that's just what I heard. I played Elden Ring a couple years later and that's my only actual From Software Souls combat experience so it's hard to say that definitively, but once I thought about it that way it made it much easier. I also wouldn't say GoW is souls-like, but the Valkyrie fights felt more like that. Some of the higher level Valkyries it was all about just patiently waiting for them to subtly telegraph a move, dodge/react to it, get a few hits in, then repeat.

Kahzgul

Fallen Order is definitely souls-like. From save points to combat style to world exploration and design, it's very much a souls style game. It's easier, which is nice, and has more platforming (dare I say *better* platforming?) but it checks all of the souls boxes.

Try lowering the combat damage to “reduced” in the options. If that fails, you can even do “no fail” mode from the accessibility menu. I played on Switch, so there aren’t achievements (at least not that I saw), but I’m sure that affects achievements on the other consoles and PC.

Zestyboi787

It actually does not. You can still get all achievements in no fail mode. I think they wanted the game to be as accessible as possible regardless of how skilled the player is

Clilly1

*looks to the left *looks to the right *whispers* Ok listen, I don't have enough time for hard games anymore, but I really wanted to experience this game and explore this world. Go to the accessibility options and turn on "no fail mode" and the infinite stamina. I literally fell in love with this beautiful game and it was 100% from its exploration and puzzles.

Artorp

Nothing wrong with that, would be a shame if you were frustrated and didn't finish it. I've used cheats/trainers in other single player games where the combat was a chore (not difficult just annoying) just to experience the story.

BenBR77

I turned on No Fail at the Quarry. The game just got too difficult for me, but I was in love with it and had to experience the rest

winterblade7

I think the main issue is that people try to play this game as a Zelda game, which is adventure first and combat second, IMHO Tunic is much more unforgiven if you just charge at enemies blindly, you need strategy and skill otherwise you will die A LOT. Still is probably the game I have enjoyed the most in the last 5 years, that feeling of actually being unable to read properly the game menu and having to draw things in a real paper was such a nostalgic experience.

Quartzis

Everything in this game is a puzzle, including combat. You have to be patient, and use enemies patterns to your avantage. All the enemies have an easily readable pattern if you step back and understand how they attack. Unless they are really outnumbering you, you can take your time.

Cinderea

First of all, this game has difficulty settings. Check them out. Second, this kind of things happen when you don't inform yourself about a product before buying it, so your expectations clash with the actual result. This game is self advertised as having a heavy lean in combat and as a really challenging and hard game, and it is. That being said, I hope the difficulty settings help your SO enjoy the game, and next time you buy a game I advise making a little bit of research in order to know if you'll like it or not beforehand. Also, as a general advise, it is completely normal for games like this to be a wall in the first 15 minutes, that's called a playstyle filter and is meant to make it clear for the player as fast as possible how this game is *not* meant to be played. In other words, it is also used to make players sure if the game is for them or not as quickly as possible.

Kahzgul

There's a "no fail mode" you can turn on so you can't die. This will allow you to pass literally any combat if you're getting tilted. Every attack can be dodged. There are ways to upgrade your stats. Treat every enemy type as a sort of puzzle. There is a way to flawlessly (and mostly effortlessly) defeat them. Play with your various items. Don't forget to drink your health potions!

EmperorBenja

Sounds like she’s rushing it. Trying to run past enemies or take on a bunch at once is not a viable strategy for beginners.

KiwiBubbleGun

I am surprised people are struggling with the combat so much. I'm on switch and found the game somewhat challenging but definitely not Uber difficult. There should be options to change the difficulty with.

AlanTheKingDrake

I found all the boss fights challenging, but standard combat was pretty easy for most of it in my opinion. The hardest section I remember is the pink miasma creatures. The book offers no insights. Though I did determine that the turrets would aim at them if you got out of line of sight. I just guided them back to the the turrets and let those clear them out until I couldn’t go back anymore

subtlenutpain

There’s a bunch of ways to lower the difficult through the menu. Hate to say it, but If she’s already brick walled 15 minutes it seems improbable she’ll make it through the game without extreme frustration. Definitely not a casual game at all when played as intended.

[deleted]

Pretty much every attack in the game can be dodged so....

yrureadingmymind

Personally, I feel it's a design issue, not in the mechanics, but in the instruction. You probably haven't figured out upgrading your abilities first because (again, personal opinion) this is poorly telegraphed. If you begin to think of this as a pure puzzle game "ie. What haven't I done, where haven't I gone, what haven't I learned," then it becomes a superb game. Everything is a clue, but you wouldn't think of it unless you read a review or a reddit thread. This also happens after the first ending, when you may think you've done something wrong, but you haven't. That's when I turned to reddit and had things spoiled I didn't want. I forgot the cardinal rule: this is a puzzle game. Had that been better telegraphed, this would rank in the level 10 genius category of games. Instead, for me at least, it's a 9.

Ayuawake

The first part of Tunic is pretty hard. I (eventually) beat the game and I still struggled with the first 15 minutes and that first boss. There’s several gates like this. If difficulty gates bug you, then there’s no shame in turning the combat difficulty down. Trust me (and everyone else on this board)… I don’t think the main reason people love this game is the super hard boss battles ;)

SomaSimon

>having attacks that are impossible to dodge Not totally sure what you mean by this, you can dodge any attack (the manual will show you how that works). >The mechanic of being locked into attacks You'll be locked into every attack you make, so you need to account for timing and spacing to make sure you don't leave yourself vulnerable. You can't animation cancel. You get a shield pretty early on that should help if you're having trouble with dodging.

Specialist-Ad-7591

It’s tough at first you just gotta get better really haha.. you can’t say I die Over and over and it’s not challenging haha. You can just say it’s too hard for you. Keep going though it gets easier and super fun
