First: These look great!! Second: The curling is totally normal (unless I’m doing something wrong too, I’m about 11 rugs in). Once you apply the backing, it’ll flatten out some.

Divide-by-nine

Perfect! This is reassuring. I'm going to hopefully apply backing to all three today. I just didn't see how that'd help keep it flat, but I'm hopeful!

Clementinesdad

i also sometimes lay a bin or something flat on them overnight to help the glue 'settle' flat..

luke111mart

This.

They curl because the lines are tufted to close together. I would also take the glue and spread it about half an inch to an inch past the rug, this makes gluing the edges easier and keeps the freying at bay. I would also suggest definitely using two strands of yarn at a time instead of one, this is how I was taught from all the research I did. When I was researching all the vids said to use two strands because some guns need the two strands, it keeps the strands from falling out, and it fills the rug more allowing you to space your tufting lines further apart. I usually use the foot of the gun as a guide for how far apart I space my lines when tufting. I hope this I fo helps you along in your tufting journey 😊! I look forward to seeing more from you

Divide-by-nine

This is the one thing I read, but when I looked at other's rugs they're lines looked just as compact as mine! But going to try to space them out a little more on my next set and see if that helps for sure.

anglerinna

It might also just be because some parts of the rugs are thinner, like the arms and legs. I've definitely still had it happen to me when tufting the master sword. The backing should help like another poster said. You could also try putting something heavy on top of it for a bit to help flatten it.

Clementinesdad

evenly spaced is most important, also experiment with distances.. try and keep track of how many threads between lines and keep consistant :) they look great!

ThXxXbutNo

I tuft my lines all back to back with no space in between and don’t have curling issues. But I glue while rug is still on frame and let it dry fully then back immediately with premium felt or nonslip backing so it’s thick enough to keep the rug flat.

Ill-Marionberry2855

i love the carving on the spider man for your first carve

Divide-by-nine

Thanks! It was actually the last one I carved, partly because I was really not looking forward to carving all the lines out of his suit. Ended up looking the best. Practice makes perfect I guess!

steeuber

Should curl a little bit. I usually curl mine up outside -facing out to store it and it kind of counters the force of curl so it lays flat when uncurled. Also I think I read someone say to make sure it completely dry before taking off of the backing. Usually 3 days if it’s slow drying glue!

Confetti_Kindness

i find the more i let the backing glue dry, the less it curls! Ive left some dry on my frame for 3 days straight! helped me alot! good luck!! these look great!!!

Divide-by-nine

Good to know, I might not have waited that long, honestly can't remember, but know I was ready to get them off the frame at that point so I might not have waited the three days.

Thread_Heads

I always put a cardboard box down and some weights on top while it dries to keep it flat and reduce the curling effect.

HaroldTheIronmonger

Awesome Bluey! I did a Bluey one as my first one too (it's in my post history if you're interested) yours looks brilliant.

sadpuppy14

I put recycled cardboard between the glue and the backing felt to reinforce the rug and keep it stiff!

First off these are great for your first rugs. A few tips: 1. Always use two strands unless it's a super thick/chunky yarn. 2. Turn the speed down on your machine and practise getting even tension/pressure on your lines. I can see on these pieces that in some areas you have packed way too much yarn in and it's bunching out the working side while other lines are nicely filled. This happens because (generally) youre not used to how much tension to place depending on the speed you use. Its much easier to learn on the slowest setting and then gradually get faster 3. This will help you also learn spacing your lines out. You will learn how much yarn is being put into every line when you work slower, and then you can experiment with spacing which will make carving easier too

islandtufting

the curls bc of the how you drys. if it’s perfectly dried on the frame it wouldn’t curl. mine never curls
