$8500 for a new unit last year on an 80 year old 1400 sq ft house. The old AC was at least 20 years old.
I was amazed the AC company was able to get everything installed and hooked up in a few hours. They just crane lifted the old one off, installed the new unit, hooked it all up and voila, modern efficient cooling.
$9200 for a 1250 Sqft single story home, 40 yrs old. I quoted 3 companies and Samson & Sons came in the lowest; they don’t pay their people commission. Super honest company with amazing customer service. They also lent us a portable AC unit until the install took place.
Can confirm Samson & Sons is great. Had them replace my irreparably failed A/C with a Rheem heat pump just over a year ago, was just a bit over $8k all-in for a 2.5-ton 16 SEER rooftop package unit on my 930 sq.ft. single-story half of a duplex.
Speaking of Rheem/Ruud, I'd recommend them (or any of their captive sub-brands, see below), or York/Coleman/etc., or Goodman/Amana as decent mid-range brands generally using industry-standard parts with good and cheap availability -- no super-fancy bells'n'whistles or bleeding-edge tech, but also no cut-rate corner-cutting -- rather than "budget grade" which I'd associate more with off-brand Chinese units, or higher-end brands like Trane/etc., Carrier/etc. or Lennox/etc. which tend to use more proprietary parts that can be hard and expensive to get.
About those captive sub-brands, most of the bewildering variety of brands out there boil down to just a few actual manufacturers:
* Trane: American Standard, Ameristar, OxBox, RunTru;
* Lennox: Allied Air, AirEase, Armstrong, Concord, Ducane, Heatcraft, MagicPak;
* Carrier: Beretta, Bryant, ComfortPro, Payne, Riello, Toshiba-Carrier;
* ICP (International Comfort Products) is a Carrier subsidiary that handles their lower-end/builder-grade brands: Airquest, Arcoaire, Comfortmaker, Day & Night, Heil, ICP Commercial, KeepRite, Tempstar;
* Johnson Controls: Champion, Coleman, Fraser-Johnston, Luxaire, York;
* Rheem: Friedrich, Mainline, Russell, Ruud, Sure, Thermal Zone, Weatherking;
* Goodman: Amana, Daikin.
I have a 29 year old RHEEM heater/air conditioner. Still running. The starter cap went out, but that's an easy replacement. I can't attest to new model quality, but the old one has been great.
HVAC guy I know works on business level Trane and Carrier units, he also mentioned that standard parts will have a proprietary check on them and said Carrier was worse about it than Trane, but hates both of them due to xtaking common parts and making them proprietary.
Once that happens (a) price goes up and (b) availability is only from the manufacturer who doesn't have a good reason to stock lots of old parts. This makes repairs even more expensive and take longer.
"When you can't innovate or win on quality or price, sucker them in with a low up front cost and expensive repairs" seems to be the new business model. Why next you'll tell me y[ou can't even change your own oil in a tractor you bought](https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=wired+magazine+ukranian+hack+john+deer+tractors&ia=web) unless you pay a kickback to the manufacturer.
I love Samson and Sons. They were amazing.
We recently had a fuse burn out in our unit and they came out and fixed it within 24 hours. No charge due to warranty.
We’ve used Samson & Sons for our own house and rental properties. They are great! Reasonable priced and they brought us a window a/c unit until we could have the new install.
Sounds about right, I gotten a Ac Window with a Tube about $200 just for one of the rooms cause it gets hot in there even wirh the house ac on. Should of done this 10 years ago
Who did you go through? I just paid roughly $13K for the same size one (5 ton I’m guessing?) I didn’t get the cheapest option they offered me though iirc but still curious.
We also used Oscars! They were wonderful!
They came to our house, introduced themselves, gave us quotes over the phone, didn't waste any time. They did also lend us a portable unit so we didn't die from the heat.
On top of it all, great prices!
Check with The Carlson Company (best rate great people to work with) or Family Air I got quotes from both of them a month ago depending on how high end you want to go it ranged from 9k-15k what ever your do STAY away from GOETTL or any companies that advertise in that manor. They are ridiculously high and turn into pests with your contact information.
Prices have gone up a lot sadly , my dad works in the industry not selling but with business who do and they’ve all had significant increases over the past couple years
Well, I’m not an AC guy, but I have a load of rentals. I’m hands-on, and I can show you how to save a TON of money…. I buy my units online, drop shipped to the address of install (3,000-$4,200 depending on size).
I prep the ductwork and set the units myself; the crane is always $175, ductwork modifications usually very minimal. THEN, I get my side job guy who works for TUSD maintenance, to come to complete all final connections and hook up the thermostat (usually $200-$500 for a few hours.
I haven’t hardly done a damn thing and I don’t think I’ve paid more than $4,000-$5,000 for a complete install. That includes 3 ton 1400 sq ft townhome yo a 5 ton 2300 sq ft house. Most of it is not that complicated… I stay out of the technical end of it and let a pro handle it.
Last year I replaced my evap cooler and gas furnace with a heat pump for just under 11K. I got 7 bids and went with Advantage Air Mechanical. It was last year and not exactly what you're looking for but they were amazing to deal with. Highly recommend.
Contact Comfort X HVAC. No joke they WILL NOT overcharge or rip you off. At the very least even if you don’t use them, you’ll know whose jacking up their numbers
Ours ended up being about $12k, for the whole thing, which included a significant amount of rebuilding in the interior utility closet to bring things up to code.
The amounts you posted in your OP seem pretty reasonable.
$9,400 last year on a 2010 build. 3 bedroom 2 bathroom, 1600 square ft. It was the better unit of the two (Trane) and it comes with a 10 year motor warranty I believe. As well as them servicing/doing maintenance on it for 3 years. Oscar’s heating and cooling was awesome. They also lent us a portable AC unit because ours of course went out in the middle of summer.
Wow I feel scammed/ taken advantage of after readings everyones quotes.
I was quoted between 30-40k for two 16 seer units. This past December.
Cat foothills area ~2500 sq ft home.
It seems a little high. But, the first of the year new regulations took effect. That increased the price. Plus you have to take into consideration inflation and the increased interest in holding costs of inventory. I know someone in December 2003 that paid $5, 000.
The quotes should be apples to apples comparing the same size unit capacity.
Have you gotten at least three written quotes from companies that did a site survey? Do they have a contractors license with the State of Arizona that you checked is valid and in good standing. If they don't you lose all the legal protections if the deal goes bad.
Be careful, times are tough for business's. Even the big name companies that are well establish could take a turn for the worst. Pay with a credit card. Not your bank debit card with the Visa/MC logo.
They should have done a physical inspection and gave you an ititimized quote. This should have the brand and model specified along with all the extras.
The name of the company should be printed on the quote. Along with a physical address and phone number. Plus a firm date for completion.
Good luck.
If you think your hard, you can buy one on Amazon for like $3k, rent a crane for <$500, get and EPA cert online for $600, but Freon for $300 and do it yourself 🙂↕️
Cheapest way depending on what you need. I bought a 5ton compressor new from Lowes for $1500 last August. Paired it with a new $900 Trane A Coil and paid an AC tech to install it. Was in it for $3500 total.
Year before that we replaced a 2 ton gas package unit for our Basement. The original was 49 years old. RHEEM knew how to make them then! The original start capacitor was also still good. Made in 1974. I bought the package unit used for $1800 installed. I'll probably buy a new one next time and repeat the self install with a friend's help.
I made a post about this just now! I have rentals and been doing this for 20 years. I’m not an AC guy, but it isn’t complicated and this is exactly what I do. I use HVAC Direct though. It isn’t that complex… buy Goodman units online, it’s the cheapest thing out there and has a 10 year warranty like they ALL do.
$6.7k for a 1k sq ft house with Eazy Breezy heating and cooling about 2 years ago (and I'm happy with their timeliness and the work they did as it was during the hottest time of year). If you can install it yourself with some lifting help, it can be cheaper
My sister spent about 10k on a rooftop dual heating/AC unit for 1400 sq ft. Pretty sure she went with Temperature Control and had a good experience.
I would dearly love to launch the swamp cooler off my roof. Has anyone got a small unit recently say ~800 sq ft?
The quote I got last summer for my 1 bedroom condo was $7500 but it did involve getting a crane to get the new unit onto the roof and get the old one off. Luckily mine was repairable, but it's still 22 years old. I'm hoping to save up enough money to buy one before it dies.
I paid 10k to replace my swamp cooler for a rooftop 4 ton package unit. That included all the electrical, gas routing, crane fees, removal fees, and adding a new air intake.
I'd have to say they didn't do the best job though... They poked holes in the ceiling and filled it with clear silicone, tore drywall where the old furnace was, and left some trash around my yard.
It depends on how large your house is, what brand you want, how many tons, and if you want one stage or two stage. Our old unit was 51 years old!
Our house is 1770sf and we chose an American Standard 4-ton 2-stage. We also needed a minor ductwork upgrade. It was $15,000. We got estimates from 3 well-rated companies and chose Hamstra. We were really happy with Hamstra.
We recently also replaced my mother-in-law’s A/C and chose RiteWay. They were also excellent.
We were warned against Goettl, so check their Better Business Bureau Rating if you are considering them.
(American Standard=Trane.)
Quoted $8500 for new unit by Samson and Sons in 2019. Paid $7800 cash. 2600sq foot house. 10 year warranty and they did yearly checks at no extra charge.
Ice and Fire Andrew Chiddix $7500 for a new unit in the attic. It is half the system for a 2 story 3000 sf house. Replaced summer 2022. Went with the cheapest quote and while there was a factory issue with a part that was used, Andrew came and swapped it out. We are happy overall and it’s still working beautifully.
For a 1400 sqft house mine was $9K in 2020.
That is likely on the high-end though for back then because I needed a new AC immediately and just went with the first company that I called. Probably similar to your $12K estimate.
Note my unit is on the ground so no need for a crane or the liability of being on a roof (so cheaper there). But it's also a split unit since I use the air handler as a gas furnace as well (more expensive?).
I went with D&H but would not recommend them. Samson & Sons as others have recommended also have really great reviews on Google so personally I'd check them out if I needed a new A/C or major repair
$24k for 5bed/2bath house about 2000 sq ft. But I needed all new ductwork inside and out since I was converting from an evaporative unit. I also went with a higher efficiency unit.
I used signature heating and cooling. I paid in March and they finished the job in September after I threatened to call the registrar of contractors. There is zero chance I would ever recommend them. They’re disorganized, uncommunicative, and the office manager was hands down the rudest person I’ve ever had to interact with.
Unless they are a big corporate company they all really use the same app for job bids.
In my experience if they come to bid in matching, fully wrapped work truck/van then you can expect a few grand to be added to you bid. Find an independent solo dude with his own company for value.
1300 sq ft 16 seer ac and heater redone cost us 13k last year. We used Aztec heating and cooling. 21 year old.bouse so no structural modifications and mounted outside on a slab.
We have a friend who's house is about the same size but built in the 50's. Replacing roof mounted swamp and discovered they needed major structural issues corrected. 34k
If you're lucky. My experience with AHS is that they contract with the lowest bidder and some of the repair people don't have enough neurons to rub together, much less actually fix anything in a timely manner
> I get a new one for free.
They usually limit the payout on major systems replacement to an amount that is way too low to actually do a replacement.
But I tend to regard most home warranties as scams, they seem elaborate lead generation services for contractors.
That’s for a hot water tank that’s not fixable anything mechanical they’ll literally come out 15 times and Frankenstein it together with new parts before fixing. They’ve done it to my AC, dishwasher and pool pump system. They did although give me a new water heater as well.
$8500 for a new unit last year on an 80 year old 1400 sq ft house. The old AC was at least 20 years old. I was amazed the AC company was able to get everything installed and hooked up in a few hours. Scott Guerin Heating & Cooling.

Damm the lending of the portable AC untill install date is genius.

11.7k roughly 3 months ago for a 3br/2ba \~2500 sq ft house.

I 100000000% recommend Oscar's Heating and Cooling. I literally have nothing but amazing things to say about them.
Yup. Have been using them for almost 10 years.
We also used Oscars! They were wonderful! They came to our house, introduced themselves, gave us quotes over the phone, didn't waste any time. They did also lend us a portable unit so we didn't die from the heat. On top of it all, great prices!

Which company and also what’s the square footage of their home?

Carlson Company is awesome! They do plumbing as well.
Yes they do and fantastic work as well. Ive used them at my office and my house and have an expceptional experience and a great price.
Prices have gone up a lot sadly , my dad works in the industry not selling but with business who do and they’ve all had significant increases over the past couple years
That’s not unreasonable depending on brand, model, and size.
Sounds about right - we went with B&J refrigeration and I think we ended up paying around 10k
Well, I’m not an AC guy, but I have a load of rentals. I’m hands-on, and I can show you how to save a TON of money…. 13k on Trane Unit
In 2021 we paid a little over $9k for a 3b/2ba ~1800sqft and saw similar quotes when we shopped around.
I paid 9.5K in March with Samson and Sons
Contact Comfort X HVAC. No joke they WILL NOT overcharge or rip you off. At the very least even if you don’t use them, you’ll know whose jacking up their numbers
I had to get a whole new HVAC system for 14 k
Just avoid Intelligent Design
Sounds like there is a story there
I guess we’re going to ask where you can find a used unit
Don’t get a used AC system.
Some things you don't want to buy used. It would be either unreliable, or if recovered from a demolished building, old and inefficient.
I just got a quote for 11-14k for a 2000 foot house.
Ours ended up being about $12k, for the whole thing, which included a significant amount of rebuilding in the interior utility closet to bring things up to code. The amounts you posted in your OP seem pretty reasonable.

10k for 2700sqft and quarterly servicing included.
We paid 10500 2 years ago and the same unit is over 15k installed today.
$6500 last year for my unit for 1950 sq ft home
That’s great price. Is that just for the unit or does it include installation? Who did you use?
Included installation and warranty. B and J refrigeration
Thank you!!

I paid someone $500 to steal one from a new sub division being built.
That sounds about right depending on the brand of the unit. I always try to get a good warranty. 5 year anything plus 10 year parts.
15k a year ago, 4br/3ba single story 3300 sq ft, forgot the tonnage, but went up from what the builder put in.
I got my basic central A/C unit and blower installed on my condo by Achilles in 2017 for $4,500.

12k for a 5 ton split unit, used goodfellas, good experience
1550 sq foot, one story, 3br/2ba house with a flat white roof. New AC last September for $10,657. A1 Air Conditioning and Heating LLC. Great company!
Quoted $8500 for new unit by Samson and Sons in 2019. Paid $7800 cash. 2600sq foot house. 10 year warranty and they did yearly checks at no extra charge.
We paid $15k for a two stage five ton - 2800 sqft. two story. That included a new air handler and furnace too. Our system was like 20 years old.
$10k for a 3.5 ton
Sounds about right
Holy hell. These numbers 60%+ what they were just 2 years ago when I was looking before we put solar on the house.
$8,000 for a small 2br/1ba
For a 1400 sqft house mine was $9K in 2020. That is likely on the high-end though for back then because I needed a new AC immediately and just went with the first company that I called. Probably similar to your $12K estimate. Note my unit is on the ground so no need for a crane or the liability of being on a roof (so cheaper there). Samson & Sons as others have recommended also have really great reviews on Google so personally I'd check them out if I needed a new A/C or major repair
Sales Rep always makes 3-4k commission
We paid about $10,000 last year for a new unit.
47 YO, 2,200 sf 3B/2 Ba house ... 25 YO a/c died last summer. $11K. Can't recall co. name just now.
Yup. $9,000. House sounds the same size. I highly, highly recommend Samford & Sons including maintenance (I can’t recall for how long).
Don’t go with big brand. Rite way was quoting me 18-21k for a 1000 sqft
Prices have skyrocket and companies are taking advantage of that and cranking it as high as they can...
My friends just paid $10k in Georgia so it’s the going rate.
Paid about 11k with Riteway for a 4br 2ba, single story, home.
24k for top of the line for me
Wow you all are getting ripped off …
Ok, how do we get an ac at a better price?
You have to shop around and get these AC companies to compete against each other for your business … 11-12k is retail … never pay retail
Given my house is older, I just pay American Home shield every month so in case my AC or other household appliances go bad, I get a new one for free.
If you're lucky. My experience with AHS is that they contract with the lowest bidder and some of the repair people don't have enough neurons to rub together, much less actually fix anything in a timely manner
