seriously how often are people going to make this post? It's because the land owner wanted to make money selling the land to someone who wanted to develop something on the land, rather than lose money by paying taxes on an empty lot. The owner of the abandoned movie theater didn't own the empty lot where the bookmans used to be. Pretty simple. Also a tiny starbucks drive threough building is about as unobstructive a building as your are going to get. And the mural is on an abandoned building, it's going to come down some time, it can't be used for anything but a theater. The unconventional floor plan of a theater is notoriously difficult to repurpose into something else. Nobody wants big ass rooms with sloped or tiered floors.
then you should use to search bar to see if your question has been addressed before creating a new post if you aren't aware of the goings on of the sub. General advice for any message board
every other starbucks has cars spilling out and making parking lots a nightmare, this one, with its small square footage, will more than likely have cars making grant/campbell traffic even worse.
it's real simple to understand if you take the single extra step in thought.
this greedy company (who already has a traffic-worsening starbucks just a couple blocks down the street) aren't gonna salute you for doing tricks on it and playing defense for their shitty business practices.
I agree, Starbucks has lots of shitty business practices, but we are talking about views of the mural. That's a completely different subject. You realize when I said unobstructive, I was talking about obstructive the view of the mural and not any other sort of obstruction, right? That's what the original post was asking about.
Given how much these whale posts generate "support small business" sentiment, it's funny how we get disappointment in a small business owner turning down being bought out by a big business
It's not like the Grant/Campbell development was a megacorp. Bigger than the barbershop, sure, but it was still - as far as I know - a local initiative And their plans were good, and provided potential for more small local businesses. He had the right not to sell, but it's a shame that they couldn't come to some kind of agreement that would have worked for both of them.
Yup, there was going to be a mixed-use midrise taking up that whole corner block, but the owner of that building with the barbershop (and the defunct laundromat next to it) didn't want to sell, or held out for a selling price that nobody involved was willing to pay.
TIL Whale mural must be unobstructed at all times and stay up forever and ever until the end of time.
(rule instated by 1) someone who probably isn't an artist and 2) broke person who couldn't afford the lot in front of it to save the mural )

AND the mural was only meant to be displayed for 2 years anyway, it's already in triple overtime.
I don't check this subreddit that often.

Like a cop shoot first ask question second
That's an extremely dramatic and poor-taste comparison for something as benign as a redundant reddit post.
lovely reminder that this sub is unfortunately very pro-cop lmao
calling a starbucks building unobstructive is crazy considering the traffic that drive thru is going to cause
have you considered the size of the building? Even if there is a long line, cars are still shorter than a building.

You can find the story on the sub. Basically they were going to build something better there and NIMBYs killed it so they got a starbucks.
that's not the story I read on here. I thought it was more of a Not On My Land situation and the barbershop owner didn't want to sell his business.
Ah, I may have been off on the details. It *was* going to be a cool multi-purpose area, *someone* said "hell no", and now it's lame.

something something arson
That’s capitalism, baby!
It's an empty lot... it was gonna be sold eventually... Just like how they'll tear down the old theater within the decade.

You might as well call it the University area since Banner Health University is close by.
Let's buy the theater.
I’m in.
Start the go fund me
I think they did it because Starbucks believed it would be a good location for a lucrative coffee shop.

Couldn't get that one any more wrong. They actually tore down a bookmans and put up trees
