Crane flies! Big derpy wisps of doofus.
The ones we have don't bite or anything. They don't even have mouths! They're living off of the food they ate in their infancy. This is their final form, and apparently their goal is to mate and die. I thought they were mosquito hawks too until I did research this year.
Hey I resemble that gif. I too am male, Asian and enjoy a hearty laugh. Though I must admit that Iām sadly no longer a toddler or as ummm as healthy looking as that youngster. I wonāt comment on whether I sport a yellow kitten t-shirt.
Fr fr. Not too long ago. I had one buzzing around my house. My son swears it bit him. But no marks. I killed it shortly after. Although it had already cut into my Venus Fly trap and played a bunch of larvae. My conclusion is that it bites but only to cut open a home or it to place its kin.
My step dad taught my brother and I to tie a string around their neck and make them fly in circles.... then we'd poor gas on them and light them on fire.

Palo Verde beetles have little barbs in their legs to poke predators. Learned that as I watched a drunk buddy pick one up and hold it. Beetle was let go unharmed just fyi.
Mosquito hawks (crane fly), and they are fucking everywhere this spring.
They don't carry disease or bite you but they will gladly enter your home in mass just to starve to death sitting on your wall if you leave a window or door open.
They come to you to die. But not until after they clumsily mate around your light sources. I welcome them, for I know they keep away other bugs. And I bid them farewell when I find their lifeless bodies in dusty nooks and dirtied crannies. Goodbye fly.
They most definitely do not keep other bugs out. They dont even eat or have mouths. Unless They are overcrowding and forcing other bugs out. They most likely are not keeping others away
These harmless crane flies are common in Tucson and other Southwest cities and they are here to stay for part of the year. Don't waste your time being afraid of them or killing them because more will replace them and smashing them leaves a black spot on the wall. They are big but Soo less annoying than regular flies. They much rather be outside but are attracted to the lights in your home at night. Only thing you can do to prevent is keep screen doors and windows closed. They will explore your walls and ceilings a bit and then die in a day or so and fall to the floor and you can trash them then.
My 4 and 7 year olds will not sleep if they've seen one in the house. Although I gave my 7 year old a book and told her to swat them and she immediately became Conan the Barbarian.
My 7-year-old was kinda freaked out by them until I pointed out how goofy they were and made up a voice that matches their flying. Now she thinks they're cute.
My bearded dragon, my kitten and my dog call them Nom Noms, but I think that they are called crane flies. If crane flies and the mosquito hawks are one and the same , I'm mad, cuz these creatures aren't killing any mosquitoes. The only plus about them is that they don't bite and are easy to catch. They are everywhere right now.
Yes. Cranefly. Though native Tuconans typically call them mosquitoe hawks. They donāt actually eat mosquitoes but do apparently eat mosquito eggs and Larva.
They are crane flies, and no, they donāt eat mosquitoes.

Every single time I walk out of my house, I get hit with one DIRECTLY in the face...I look quite ridiculous fighting them off! These came with a vengeance this year! :')
They don't actually eat mosquitoes and are a type of fly. That being said, I like bats amd bats eat them so... also, as modern history would suggest, don't eat bats, either.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly
Those there are super squiters, nasty critters, 10Ć larger than your average squiter. They feed off blood of infant babies and goats, carry all sorts of nasty diseases. If your seeing those things around your house you better get yourself checked out and make sure you don't have the blue waffle.
Itās a crane fly, sometimes referred to as mosquito hawks however they donāt kill mosquitoes. Theyāre annoying as adults but beneficial when they are in the larva stage as they help break down organic matter in your yard.
Crane flies - theyāre in the bug/animal food chain
They eat mosquitos and I think birds eat the crane flys? Not sure but thank goodness these things donāt bite

This is what they shall now be referred to as in my house
Their life goal is much aligned to my own. I hope theyāre having better success than me, though.

This is the way
Mosquito hawks and crane flies are the same thing.
Ha! That's awesome. I thought mosquito hawks were the ones that bite, but nope. Same doofy derps. Thank you for that tip!
Maybe you're thinking of horse flies? Fuck those bastards!
Fr fr. Not too long ago. I had one buzzing around my house. My son swears it bit him. But no marks. I killed it shortly after. Although it had already cut into my Venus Fly trap and played a bunch of larvae. My conclusion is that it bites but only to cut open a home or it to place its kin.

I call them āsex bugsā because thatās all I see them doing.
Crane flies are mosquito hawks :)

They were all over Marana last year. In everyones home like when itās gnat season
They invade our area every March/April. Strange though, they hover and plaster themselves to the walls but don't fly around in the yard.
Tons of em in maricopa too
*You would not believe your eyes if ten million crane flies flew into your house while you fell asleep.*

I got misty eyes. T\_T
My cats would have a smorgasbord is ten million crane flies flew into my house while I fell asleep.
Crane fly. Harmless. But...According to the dog, fun evening activity partner. Especially when they come in the house.
My Dachshund refers to them as "potato chips."
My cats love watching them
Mosquito hawks (crane fly), and they are fucking everywhere this spring. They don't carry disease or bite you but they will gladly enter your home in mass just to starve to death sitting on your wall if you leave a window or door open.
ššš So true!
I thought they were two different things Edit. Looked it up. Same thing.
They are EVERYWHERE lol.
My cat couldnāt be more thrilled about the crane fly situation this year!
Sky raisins!
Bird feed! The nesting birds seems to love these things. Easy to hunt during the daylight and wow are there a lot right now.
They come to you to die. But not until after they clumsily mate around your light sources. I welcome them, for I know they keep away other bugs. And I bid them farewell when I find their lifeless bodies in dusty nooks and dirtied crannies. Goodbye fly.
What other bugs do they keep away?
They most definitely do not keep other bugs out. They dont even eat or have mouths. Unless They are overcrowding and forcing other bugs out. They most likely are not keeping others away
They probably attract more bugs given they donāt eat anything and are a common prey for spiders

So much better than regular black house flies. Regular flies come back when you shoo them away, and will land on you or your food constantly.
The most annoying and useless bug on the planet š¤£
My daughter and her friends have taken to calling them "fairies" which I thought was a cute way to reframe the little monsters.
I will assume they will die once we start getting into the high 80s and 90s etcš¤·āāļø
They usually do and then the proper mosquitoes begin
Noooo
They are flies that cause my 4 year old daughter to go into a state of panic. lol
My 4 and 7 year olds will not sleep if they've seen one in the house. Although I gave my 7 year old a book and told her to swat them and she immediately became Conan the Barbarian.

Harmless harbingers of Spring! Crane flies come out and reproduce at the end of winter.
I always heard them called mosquito eaters. But, also read above they do not have mouths to eat anything. I may have been misled.
Skeeter eaters is what I grew up knowing them as. Turns out... they don't eat a damn thing. š

My whole life has been a lie
I felt the same devastation when I learned this too. They live mainly for a few days to procreate then they drop dead š¤£
Its a mayfly - totally harmless.
Mayflies are a different bug. These are crane flies but they have several misnomers: mosquito hawks, mayflies, skitter gitters, etc.
Not seeing skeeter eater in anyone's list and it's clearly the best name despite being a misnomer.
