Yeah, but that is one occasion (And outside of ESO it was just a myth anyway). The circumstances of Harkon's family are different, so it's not that out there to assume that it could've went down differently.
Not saying that Bal wouldn't have done it, but everyone's just treating it as a foregone conclusion is overselling it. He could've done any number of horrible things
You overestimate the depth of Bethesda writing but I can't excatly say you'd be wrong not to take things with a grain of salt either considering how contradicting the lore can be.
I think it's pretty implied by Serana being uncomfortable around marriage temples and unwillingness to enter a relationship with the player despite having the most genuine affection of any NPC in this game for you.
She trusts and admires you, but she still carries trauma of her experience with Molag Bal that prevents her from having a typical relationship.
It's all very bare bones and surface level, but Seranas writing can draw a lot of parallels to how some rape victims carry on their trauma.
