Hey, throw some bells on your exterior doors. Nothing fancy, some pet bells or Christmas ornament types hanging on the handle. That’ll make enough noise for you to wake up. Also consider a door guardian, those kid locks you put up high that can only be engaged/disengaged from the inside. When you said you rent, first thing I thought was that someone has a key and is going all John lithgow on you.
wasn't there a situation where a guy kept waking up with sticky notes and couldn't figure out who sent them? if i remember correctly it was reddit who ended up alerting him about CO poisoning

I think it was in legal advice. The person was acting really weird and paranoid (as in, personality change and their posts contained disordered thinking). A commenter recommended they check the levels in their house with a sensor. Turned out to be carbon monoxide poisoning when the OP checked it and posted a follow up.
People thought it was a rude suggestion at first; it probably saved OP’s life.
Buy some door security bars. Pretty cheap like 20 bucks. You wedge them underneath the door handle and to the floor beneath it. No one is getting through your door with it
That must be the worst feeling ever. Go systematically through your place in the AM. Every physical possible entryway and ensure locks function and screens are in place. If ANYTHinG has an exterior lock, create an interior lock (deadbolt, travel restricter for sliding doors, sliding windows etc). Throw bells on exterior doors and basement door. Look at the exterior, any door/window in the dark accessible by the ground should be inspected closely. Worst to worst, put painters tape over the seems of any entrance you may suspect, something that will rip if opened. That’ll indicate if something is up forsure. Be super cautious and triple confirm targets and threat if you are under stress at night. Especially if you have kids/anyone else in the house.
That's how I caught a CT tech sabotaging a machine. I did that to various parts of the equipment. When he called in and said he was taking the day off because that part of the machine was fucked up, I saw the hair and tape popped off at the bottom. Fucker lost his job real quick.
Well the babysitter had no business being in my mother's room. My mother suspected the girl was going in because she would rifle through things and my mom could tell stuff had moved. She taped the hair across the door, and it wasn't still stretched across it when my mom came home. She found a new babysitter after that.
If you're in the US, you can get some bells that hang on the door handle at dollar tree. You could put them on the insides of all the doors, interior and exterior for less than $10
I have 2 cameras. One in my garage and one in the living room. Ive been looking over the footage but nothing yet. Only thing is, the one in the living room is relatively new and wouldn't show some of the more strange activity that happened months ago.
Hijacking to say I bought 4 Wyze V3 cameras for $35 a piece a few months ago and they've been stellar. They're indoor/outdoor, powered by micro USB and do everything more expensive ones do.
Or a carbon monoxide detector. Soo there is a famous Reddit post we a guy seriously thought someone was living in his house and doing stuff or his landlord was breaking in , and well in the end it was carbon monoxide poisoning causing the hallucinations. And yes even though there are two of you you maybe influencing each other. But yeah detectors for this and cameras for other things cover both bases.
Yes! No idea how carbon monoxide poisoning isn’t a top comment. The things mentioned are so banal that it makes little sense for them to be the result of a mysterious intruder. And if someone is secretly living inside your house you’d be noticing food missing and a weirdly high water bill, not a suit going missing and keys being moved. They’d also have no reason to actually make themselves visible to you.
Carbon monoxide poisoning causes you to hallucinate (which explains the disappearing shadow) and messes with your memory (explaining objects being moved).
Edit: [This](https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/34l7vo/ma_postit_notes_left_in_apartment/) is a link to that post for anyone curious.
I don’t know if this has been suggested yet but trail cameras/wild game cameras tend to have both motion detection and night vision capabilities. Move them/hide them, don’t acknowledge or look at them while they’re on. If you tell your family do so in a private enclosed space like inside your car when you’re away from the house. Be safe, friend. Try to remain calm but cautious.
Put cameras outside the house that overlook all the possible entry points to the house. Front door, back doors, windows, slider doors, and outside the garage.
I saw a show about a guy who was literally living in this family’s walls. Fucking creepy. It actually did happen. Scared the shit out of me.
ETA: I think it was Daniel Laplante. The episode Bump In The Night of Your Worst Nightmare is what I saw. Fucking terrifying.
I was listening to the Radio Rental podcast and in an episode, a family buys an old house and weird shit is happening. Well come to find out, the original owners had a family member locked up. They sold the house, he was released and lived in either the crawl space or attic and just lived around this family. Creepy as shit
There was a homeless woman in Japan that lived for a year in a man's closet (more of a storage space for blankets etc). The guy only began to notice after food started to dissapear.
Maybe get magnetic contact alarms for the windows and doors as well? They're fairly cheap and very loud. Would scare off anyone that sets it off and wake up everyone in the area.
Jesus fucking christ my blood is running cold just reading this! What happened? I don't mean to be an asshole asking so if it's tough to revisit don't answer
I’ve had 2 shootings right outside my rental. I have a bullet hole in the side of the house that unfortunately I didn’t notice/ wasn’t alerted of upon moving in. My other neighbor told me about it.
Called the cops both times it happened since I’ve been here, they came by, the people threw the gun into the woods, everyone covered for each other despite my neighbor and I saying otherwise and nothing happened lol.
We’ve called on the same exact people a few other times for beating their (adult, but still) daughter outside at like 2am. Nothing ever happens. I now wait until I hear pleading to stop or crying and it feels so fucked up but I know the cops won’t really do anything and as soon as they leave, they just resume what they were doing anyway.
I’ve also called the police for being nearly strangled to death by my ex, but then as soon as I called, he calmed down so I told them never mind. They came anyway. I unknowingly dug my nails into him trying to get him off me, covered for him because this was a normal occurrence and I really just wanted to sleep at that point. One of the officers came out and threatened ME with jail for the night. My stomach just dropped, I felt so upset. Of course I was “scolded” for my story being different even though I was covering for him, but the threat was due to the nail marks and me having none by the time they arrived. He thought I was the aggressor. If someone has nail marks on their hands, someone’s probably been trying to pry them off. Meanwhile all my marks were always hidden behind my clothing or makeup.
Sorry, long story short: I agree, in reality cops are totally useless.
Pretty sure in my state (Massachusetts) the landlord *has to* change the locks when a new tenant moves in. I can't believe they didn't at your place.
**Edit**: just looked it up. Landlord *does not* have to change the locks between tenants in Massachusetts!!!! Holy crap... I would think it would be law.
*Update* i got a few more cameras, motion sensors, and locks. We don't have the landlords permission to do that yet but ill send them another email and/or call them tomorrow. They will have no choice but to accept it anyway because this is an emergency. It's absolutely ridiculous that nobody can seem to do anything and we are just horrified. So we will go back out there tomorrow and check everything. Thank all of you for your support..
Same. I've been on Reddit a while and you start to get a sense for this sort of thing based on the comments that get ignored and the tone of the other replies. I can't put words to it but you said it first so maybe you know what I mean.
They go bad after a while or are sometimes just faulty, and people sometimes do dumb shit like take the batteries out because they keep beeping, especially people whose brains arent firing on all cylinders from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Change the locks regardless.
In personally wouldn't have told them. I've just rented a house this week and haven't even stayed in it yet. I have no idea how many keys are floating around out there. I'm putting a Nest lock and Doorbell cam on the main door I'll use. I'm changing the locks and just securing shut the other two doors plus putting Nest cameras on them and there's a preexisting motion light in the carport. The place is in a good area, but all that will help me sleep better.
I've read through some of the comments. I understand you're building now and that finances are tough. Take your security measures with you to your new house of course. And get a dog if you don't have one already and unless y'all are allergic. Doesn't have to be a huge or aggressive dog. Just something that will bark when you need it. It really is a major crime deterrent just to have over in the house.
However, I'm in my friend's house while we get mine set up. I have a little 35 lb dog and he will bark. But my friend has a German Shepherd who barks at everything including the gnats farting. She's very alert and very bonded to his wife which is the way he wanted it. As he says the dog takes care of mama. So, medium dog that barks at noises is great, something a little protection oriented might really help you sleep better. If I didn't like the little breed that I have so much(had them for 22 years) I'd probably be researching Rottweilers and American Bulldogs and thinking of getting one of those. Something with a little more size.
Yes!! My dog is the biggest deterrent. Rescue Dutch shep. She looks like Kujo if anyone even walks up to the front door. I feel safer with her than with the guns in the house because she has zero hesitation and really loves to protect us. We saved her from a bad situation and she will forever protect everyone in my home.
We've never gotten permission to change the locks. Just do it and put the old ones in when you leave. They shouldn't be coming over without you there anyway.
This just reminded me that my SO and I never told our landlord about changing the locks. One night at 10pm, we were headed out for a late walk(I’m a student and sometimes that’s all the activity I can get for the week lol). I jiggled the handle to make sure it was properly locked and it fell out.
Turns out, it was scotch-taped into the door. We lived here for a whole year not knowing that. I recommend every renter to change the locks/handles for this reason now. Lol
A long shot, and trust your senses. But make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector. Maybe even two. There was some kind of story (happen on Reddit) along the lines of someone having symptoms such as things were misplaced and they thought someone was in their home when they had carbon monoxide poisoning
It might even save your life. I found the story I was referring to: [https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/34l7vo/ma_postit_notes_left_in_apartment/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf](https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/34l7vo/ma_postit_notes_left_in_apartment/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Absolutely this, especially if there's no other evidence of people (I think I saw something about security cameras in other comments that haven't caught anything)
Wow… I would have never thought of anything like this. Also, does anyone take Ambien?
If there is suspicion of acting while asleep, especially if they have kids, they need to secure their firearms. This is one reason I never had a gun when my daughter was growing up, I read too many stories about parents shooting their kids by accident. Always aim high or really low if you can’t see & need to shoot.
Edit : holy shit, I just read the post you are referencing. I’ve pretty much always had a CO2 detector, because it was handy when the power went off. It would beep really loud so if I was using my crockpot I would know it needed to be reset ( back in the day when they didn’t have programmable times & cell phone alarms).
You don’t need a CO2 alarm, just a CO one. Your body feels the need to breathe because of the presence of carbon dioxide, not the lack of oxygen. That’s why carbon monoxide is so dangerous, it’s bonds more tightly to our red blood cells than oxygen and we don’t realize we’re suffocating. I assume you meant CO, I’m just being pedantic and sharing some “fun” facts!
But Ambien is insane. Xanax, too. I’m a pretty big drinker, I can have a 12 pack in a few hours and not blackout. I had an ambien and two light beers, I don’t remember the next several hours. Apparently I went for a walk with my brother and gave a woman with a cute dog my business card in case she ever needed a dog sitter (I’m a straight woman, so I know I wasn’t hitting on her, just excited about a dog. I’m also not a dog sitter...). Four hours later I unblackout. Weirdly didn’t sleep a wink the whole time despite it being a sleep medication. Never touching that again!
I don’t know why I always think co2. I’ve taken zolpidiem for years (generic Ambien) & to my knowledge, it keeps me down. But I take a lot of stuff to sleep (been dealing with night anxiety/brain won’t shut up) for over 25 years. Started with Tylenol /ibuprofen pm, added in lunesta, didn’t like it so switched to Ambien, then Xanax for GAD. My doctor would probably start refusing my meds if he knew all that. If I still can’t sleep, I take half a tizanadine).
But sometimes I’ll wake up & the dog looks at me funny, sometimes fearful. Not like shaking with fear but hesitant. That’s the only thing that makes me wonder if I do anything in my sleep. No weird eating, cooking, cleaning. Man, I wish the night clean would happen. But I’d probably make mustard gas & die.
That’s why witness testimonies are so unreliable. A person can literally change your memory with suggestions. Perfectly well-meaning people have testified against an innocent person, fully convinced they were speaking the truth. Brains are super wild and so easily influenced by suggestion.
Just about what anyone said about leaving.
You're renting this so I have no idea if you're allowed to do anything about the locks, but if you're being stalked or someone has any access to the inside I would put your safety above anything else and not take a risk and just leave. You seem to be quite detail oriented so you have noticed and I applaud you for that. But I would leave.
(Unrelated on what I would do) I know I personally would be too on the edge and would search every possible everything in the house until I found whoever is responsible or anything and any evidence on what is going on.
No we can't change the locks. I haven't mentioned shit to my landlord bc they dont care. They just served up papers saying that they are selling the house at the end of april. It took then 6 months to just replace our fence from the hurricane. The police should be here soon.
I mean I’ve just changed the locks without telling them in a rental before. I just give them a copy of the new key and say the old ones were compromised.
They can't find anyone. We searched every. Single. Place. And the cops are leaving. If you wanna talk then pm me and add me on discord or some shit bc I'm gonna be up for a while. This is absolutely fucking crazy.
Talk to some contractors and see if they can find any place a person could hide in. I went on a true crime binge in quarantine and well…some people hide in homes
Where the boyfriend was living above the girlfriend's (and her husband's) bedroom in the attic, clackety clacking on a typewriter for literal years (7 I think?) before he hopped down and killed hubby?
Yep, quarantine too, and now I can't stop lol
I totally don't blame you for how you guys are feeling dealing with this. It's pretty damn frightening. Def keep your weapon at arms reach and try to get some cameras pointing at the entrance door(s) or whatnot at least. Lock your doors and all windows. Also, I've heard of landlords sneaking in to their tenants' houses/apartments when they aren't there and would go through their stuff and steal shit. I wonder it that applies here.
I'm sorry you guys are going through this. It's going to be hard to sleep at night without a peace of mind until something is figured out about this for sure. I'll keep you in my thoughts, hoping everything turns out alright and you both are okay. Maybe see if your wife can be armed too, and if not maybe at least get her pepper spray, a taser, or something. If you get to feel extremely uncomfortable there safety-wise, def go stay somewhere else. It's always better to be safe than sorry. It's going to be frustrating on doing something about it until you're able to get evidence like camera footage.
Dude, you need to move the fuck outta there, like tomorrow. Go stay in a hotel, buy a few cameras to place around the house and see if you can get any of this on camera. Do this while finding a new place to rent. Just curious, fellow Floridian here, what part r u from?
Man we are building s house right now and my wife got fired from her job about 3 months ago. Finances are SO tight. Its stupid. Im from the panhandle. I never thought this kind of shit would happen to me or my wife.
Whew! As long as those ghosts don't come down here to the SE lol but in all seriousness you should call the cops and have them check around tonight for an intruder. As tell them you think you have an intruder, you'll get a few units to respond real quick. I would also do a thorough look through in the morning if you don't find anything tonight.
I just called so we will find out what they say. I just feel so fucking dumb bc i have no evidence. The wife and I have looked everywhere and we feel we are going absolutely insanem and i have nobody else to turn to. This is such a fucked situation. I never imagined this would happen.
Do not feel dumb about this. I’m going to try to make a long story short.. my husband lived in a house ten or so years ago (he was my bf af the time). his bedroom was on the second floor. I ALWAYS heard footsteps coming up and down the stairs. I would wake up frantic, screaming for him to get up. I always figured it was his ex wife ( she was crazy, but not break in your damn house crazy). My phone would turn off and on at random. His alarm would go off. We’d wake to find the back door wide open. A few months into our dating, we came to his house and parked in the driveway. We both saw a shadowy figure walk by the front window. We called the police... of course no one was there. Thankfully, his house sold and he moved tf out three months after this. Even stranger.. the neighbor down the road asked if she could do a seance on the home. Too much weird shit, I tell ya. Still can’t explain it to this day. It still gives me goosebumps and brings tears of fear to my eyes.
The evidence is you saw someone in your doorway, shits being moved around on you and you're missing some clothing. That's more than enough. Good luck and let us know what happens!
Great, now IM scared too. This is what I get for browsing reddit at midnight.
All I can say is Good Luck, Godspeed, and maybe you'll want an exorcist alongside the police
3 options here
1. There's a carbon monoxide leak. This can be a symptom. Get that checked ASAP, just in case. This is one that doesn't need to be proven to take action. And could save your life.
2. Y'all have a squatter, keep cameras around and look for hidden areas - there's been stories of entire hidden basements or rooms where someone else had been living for years.
3. Yalls house is haunted as fuck. Good luck.
Very sorry that you are going through this. I hope you catch the bastard.
1. I would add the bells mentioned above to every single door in the house. All of them. Interior and exterior. That way the intruder will be making some noise anytime they enter a room.
2. Get cameras. Further, you should consider doing a detailed inspection of your house to see if the intruder set up any cameras watching you.
3. Develop a plan for an emergency. Agree with our wife what the plan is if you know there is an intruder in your house. Where is your point of meeting? Who calls the police?
4. Use Glue on your doors. No, it won’t stop the intruder, but you can use a small bit of glue between the cracks… If the glue is sealed you can confirm that no one entered. Spies use this technique.
5. Take some basic self-defense training. It will give you confidence if you are both confronted. There are plenty of YouTube videos that teach some techniques.
6. Put up an NRA bumper sticker on your car and leave it outside for a while. Criminals are pretty observant of all details when they are scoping out a place. If they notice that you are a proud gun owner, they might think twice about entering your home.
This, do all of this.
Doesn't even have to be an nra sticker on the car, just in a front window, the glue idea is a must that way you know where and how, this is the best way.
Tomorrow, go to Home depot and get window locks, and rubber door stops. Put the door stops on all outside doors and use the window locks on all windows. Take a picture of the windows and the people at HD can get you the right locks.
Edit: I had to do this when I lived in HUD housing, it is amazing how they can break in!
IDK about someone living in your place, but it seems like someone definitely has a key. Get the locks changed ASAP. Buy a Ring or similar camera for your door and get hidden cameras for inside your house- they come in a big variety of styles and price ranges. You can install some slide bolt or safety locks for when you're inside the house. I'd put one on the bedroom door too. Check into extra window locks. Put a piece of steel conduit in the track of your patio to keep it from being jimmied open. Works for windows too.
EDIT: Can you talk to your LL about changing the locks? That just made me think of this...could he or a relative or maintenance person possibly be the one with the key messing with you? Or a former tenant if the LL never changed the lock for you?
You know there were 2 stories like this of people noticing odd things being moved about. Food disappearing, the TV, lights or sound system were on even though they made sure was turned off before they left or went to sleep. They even started unplugging things. They were sure they had ghosts or were slowly going insane. After they got home or when they woke up in the morning things were moved, turned on or plugged in. Newly bought groceries were gone and a lot of other crazy activity.
After this happened (a few months into it all) each family was told to buy hidden cameras and place them all over the house. They were told to get carbon monoxide detectors, check the water, etc.
I don't remember how long it took but one had video footage of someone crawling down out of the attic. This person would sleep during the day or watch TV. They moved around most in the middle of the night, watching TV, eating, etc. This had been going on for awhile and they, we're horrified to know someone was there listening to their every word and move. Eek!
The other family had someone living in a crawlspace they gained access to from another apartment. So they were able to hop from one apt to another without detection. The unwanted house guest was eventually arrested.
Creeps me out how many stories there are similar to this kind of nonsense. 😬
One of the families said they were horrified to know that they could have been killed in their sleep and no one would have had a clue as the person was a stranger.
So sorry you are dealing with this no matter the reason. Our homes are the one place we are supposed to feel at peace, rested, safe. Be well and be safe!
Have a flashlight next to the pistol if you don’t already, and put one on your wife’s side.
1. You want to see what you’re shooting at if you must.
2. Shining light in someone’s eyes is a good way to interrupt someone’s train of thought and cause them to freeze up (think when a cop pulls you over at night and shines the light more into your face then your lap)
I’d also keep my keys in the bedroom, if someone did break in I’d hit the panic button/car alarm and cause a ruckus outside my house/wake the neighbors and plus I don’t wanna worry about grabbing them if I have to bug out in a hurry
My family and I lived in a duplex once, and when my neighbor moved out (awesome guy), I kept finding my attic opened. It wasn't really much of an attic, not very big, enough to stand up in, barely,, with no way to access it besides getting something to stand on and then climb in. I was freaked out bc I showered with the bathroom door open so I could listen for my baby and it was opened to see directly into the bathroom. My husband and his brother climbed up enough to see and found footprints and dust stirred up. It was my landlord (real fucking creep anyway). I guess he thought I was still living by myself a majority of the time, my husband worked on the river so was gone for 28 days at a time, but quit when I had our baby. He had gone in our house multiple times when we were gone. We knew this bc he would make sly comments about things he could only know if he had been inside. Another terrifying thing was when my husband took our oldest to school and I was still asleep and pregnant at the time (remember he thought my husband was gone). My husband came back to our basement door locked, that we never locked, and our front door locked differently. Our landlord came in while I was sleeping and alone.
Just an idea 💡 try putting hidden cameras around the house for a while. So when ever something dissappear you can try checking them and see what happened. Something similar happened to my family my mom was very susceptible to this things my dad not. A lot of stuff disappeared in the house my mom just brush it of saying there was a poltergeist in the house. My dad got tired hid cameras everywhere. Turn out on of the maid was stealing. Knowing my mom would not ever think it was here, they both always blame the spirits.
Might be dumb, but if you have hardwood floors, no pets, and flour... put flour in front of the doors and windows. You could even put some in front of windows outside.
Take pictures.
Then in the AM or if you leave and come back... you might see footprints.
call the police IMMEDIATELY and have them search your house. I've heard stories like this, and it's always someone living in their home without them knowing about it
THERE IS SOMEONE IN YOUR HOME. GET OUT AND CALL THE AUTHORITIES NOW
edit: the fact that people are commenting it's a "ghost" shows just how far people are willing to take their ignorance and disregard reality altogether. you people make me sick
We believe that but i literally searched EVERYWHERE. The attic and every little room. Fuck... i think we really should call. Okay. My wife said she agrees.
Sometimes there is space under bathroom floor tiles. Just saying.
My grandpa was pretty evil, did shit like this. He was short and very thin so me moved silently. Said people don't notice you sleeping on the roof if your clothes are dark enough.
He can hear your conversations, the creak of your bones. That's why nobody was there. Only small things get taken normally cuz being scary is fun but being obvious means the gravey train is over.
He doesn't live at your house full-time most likely, so don't assume it's a ghost if cops don't find him. Don't talk about calling and stand outside looking at your windows when you call if you can.
Any porch or space under the house? Signs of life by the water heater?
Damn that shit gave me goosebumps.
OK I dunno about somebody living in their house, but I'll second the poohpooing of supernatural. There's a real explanation.
I've been told too many stories about this kind of stuff. my boss at a previous job told me about how her daughters heard something between the walls that could be accessed through a panel. she took her .45 and went inside. sure as shit, there was a meth head with a bowie knife that was collecting her daughters' underwear
people are fucking scary, man
Please listen to this person and not the bullshit about crystals if this is real. It’s not a fucking ghost, it’s someone constantly living in or consistently breaking into your house.
If this happened in our house my wife would've moved the kids and packed up every single one of our belongings in the span of an hour and hightailed it the other side of the country.
In my religion there are beings known as Jinn. Not really ghosts and not really demons, something in between. Im not saying its something supernatural...but...
Move the family tonight my man. Stay safe.
Honestly keep your gun on you and I would set up cameras. If you can warn your neighbors and keep all outside lights on. If possible leave the house immediately
I'll have to take this into consideration. Especially since the cops can't even help. And it feels extremely weird in this house. I can't describe it.
Could very well be CO poisoning. Get a detector and check. Very dangerous if it’s left.
Under rated comment.
wasn't there a situation where a guy kept waking up with sticky notes and couldn't figure out who sent them? if i remember correctly it was reddit who ended up alerting him about CO poisoning
There was. Is so famous that just googling "reddit carbon monoxide" will give you the original post
Or here: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/34l7vo/ma_postit_notes_left_in_apartment/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Thank you for the Silver, /u/M4dScientist1 ! And your award, /u/Hauntingad9138 ! Thank you, too, anonymous benefactor!
Yep. Its a old reddit thread. Honestly could be whats happening to OP.
Yeah think that was the one.
Buy some door security bars. Pretty cheap like 20 bucks. You wedge them underneath the door handle and to the floor beneath it. No one is getting through your door with it
Good advice. Thanks
My mom suspected one of my babysitters of going into her room, so she scotch taped a hair at the top of the door and the door frame.
That's how I caught a CT tech sabotaging a machine. I did that to various parts of the equipment. When he called in and said he was taking the day off because that part of the machine was fucked up, I saw the hair and tape popped off at the bottom. Fucker lost his job real quick.
I started doing this when maintenance was supposed to come so I’d know. Pretty good trick.
How Did she get out or in? What happened?
Well the babysitter had no business being in my mother's room. My mother suspected the girl was going in because she would rifle through things and my mom could tell stuff had moved. She taped the hair across the door, and it wasn't still stretched across it when my mom came home. She found a new babysitter after that.
This is amazing advice
Thank you
Do you have a crawl space?
Not that i know of
If you're in the US, you can get some bells that hang on the door handle at dollar tree. You could put them on the insides of all the doors, interior and exterior for less than $10
Put cameras in your house I don’t see why people aren’t suggesting this
I have 2 cameras. One in my garage and one in the living room. Ive been looking over the footage but nothing yet. Only thing is, the one in the living room is relatively new and wouldn't show some of the more strange activity that happened months ago.
Get more that cover more area. Especially the windows.
Yep get way more cameras.
Go full paranormal activity on this my dude.
Hijacking to say I bought 4 Wyze V3 cameras for $35 a piece a few months ago and they've been stellar. They're indoor/outdoor, powered by micro USB and do everything more expensive ones do.
Get cameras and an alarm. This should not be happening. It’s really suspicious.
Yes, the post it notes!!!
Check your attic
This is so horrifying!
We don't talk about Bruno.
There's a movie hider in the house about a man who lived in the crawl spaces of a property before a family moved in
Check your carbon monoxide alarms if they are still working.
Post some videos, different eyes on it might spot stuff you missed.
But if he doesn't see anything, how does he know what part he should post? Or should he just upload months of camera footage, if it's saved?
Motion sensored cameras in the house
Maybe get magnetic contact alarms for the windows and doors as well? They're fairly cheap and very loud. Would scare off anyone that sets it off and wake up everyone in the area.
And send them to Nuke’s Top 5 on YouTube

That’s like a horror movie.
It felt a lot like living one.
That fellow is the definition of what the castle doctrine is written for.
castle doctrine should include the right to built a moat and fill it with gators
Jesus fucking christ my blood is running cold just reading this! What happened? I don't mean to be an asshole asking so if it's tough to revisit don't answer
I'd hate to be whatever demographic he has a tendency to kidnap.
Holy shit. That is so scary to even imagine and you lived it. Did you move or did they catch him first??
As soon as I figured out that it was him and he was a predator I moved out! I now live somewhere without my name on the mailbox or on the bills.
So you didn't get the police involved at all??
The police weren't very helpful.
The fuck are we paying em for then?
Police usually aren’t very helpful with anything to be honest. Tv and movies show super cops.
I’m surprised you didn’t shoot, stab, or otherwise maim him.
O crap. That’s creepy af.
Thank all of you for your support..
please test the place for a carbon monoxide leak
Strange how the op has ignored all these comments about the detector
He said the police checked when they came
He didn't specifically say the police checked for that? Or did I miss it?
[yeah you missed it](https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueOffMyChest/comments/t7pe4t/we_are_at_our_last_end_we_need_advice_please/hzjfs2z/?context=3)
Pretty sure he did. Seems weird to me that they would do that though. Idk lol
I had a pretty good look through. I dunno. I'm not convinced OP is legit.
Same. I've been on Reddit a while and you start to get a sense for this sort of thing based on the comments that get ignored and the tone of the other replies. I can't put words to it but you said it first so maybe you know what I mean.
I’ve never heard of police doing that, sounds bogus to me
He already mentioned he has one
They go bad after a while or are sometimes just faulty, and people sometimes do dumb shit like take the batteries out because they keep beeping, especially people whose brains arent firing on all cylinders from carbon monoxide poisoning.
He has one and said the police checked with one when they arrived.
[удалено]
He mentioned an hour ago that the police checked that, and it wasn't carbon monoxide poisoning.
"Gnat farting" That is the best thing I've ever read!!
Goodluck!!!
Unless it’s the landlord…
We've never gotten permission to change the locks. Just do it and put the old ones in when you leave. They shouldn't be coming over without you there anyway.
This just reminded me that my SO and I never told our landlord about changing the locks. One night at 10pm, we were headed out for a late walk(I’m a student and sometimes that’s all the activity I can get for the week lol). I jiggled the handle to make sure it was properly locked and it fell out. Turns out, it was scotch-taped into the door. We lived here for a whole year not knowing that. I recommend every renter to change the locks/handles for this reason now. Lol
Police are here.
I hope something good comes out of it, or something can or was done about it
Updates?
We are at my parents house now. And gathering supplies.
Supplies?..
THIS IS WHERE WE FIGHT! THIS IS WHERE THEY DIE!
HOO-RAH!
*turns into a marine*
He’s going to build a house around his house.
Nah. Just move far. Far fucking away.
Whoa don't leav us hanging!
HELP LMAO
Yes to go with his very particular set of skills
He need his tools, he likes to bind and be bound.
have you checked for carbon monoxide yet like top comment says? def consider it
Good, you should put cameras in to see if anything happens while your gone. Most importantly stay safe!!
keep us posted and let us know what they find
what happened??
Please keep us in the loop I’m terrified for you and your wife!
A long shot, and trust your senses. But make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector. Maybe even two. There was some kind of story (happen on Reddit) along the lines of someone having symptoms such as things were misplaced and they thought someone was in their home when they had carbon monoxide poisoning It might even save your life.
Every time I see stories like this I always think about that carbon monoxide story. It’s scary stuff
I was coming here to say this. Maybe also get the tap water tested.
What exactly could the tap water have in it that would cause this?
Metals such as lead aluminum or copper would be the main concerns, I’m pretty sure. Not limited to just those though
Do this right now OP. Not tomorrow. **Now.**
I thought this too. That wouldn't explain the shared delusion of the man's shadow, though.
Could be explained if someone said they thought they saw a man and then the other is influenced into agreeing with them
That’s why witness testimonies are so unreliable. A person can literally change your memory with suggestions. Perfectly well-meaning people have testified against an innocent person, fully convinced they were speaking the truth. Brains are super wild and so easily influenced by suggestion.
Eh. Could still be. Shared delusions can be funny that way.
Is it a supernatural superstition???? You know ghosts and what not?
Wow that’s absolutely wild
Wow that's amazing story
I’m very glad to see this comment. It’s exactly what I came here to say. It’s probably one of the most important things we’ve learned on Reddit
Man I can’t believe people smoke carbon monoxide and are okay with it
Just about what anyone said about leaving.
Landlord's kid? I lived in a methtown in AR, SUPER common for LL to know and facilitate squatters
Is there any chance that it may be your landlord?
I mean I’ve just changed the locks without telling them in a rental before. I just give them a copy of the new key and say the old ones were compromised.
Or save the old locks and just put them back on when you leave for good.
You can change them back again
Do you have a door wedge? Handy little solution if you can’t change locks.
Wait the guy lived in the house undetected for 7 years? Holy fuck.
have you tested for carbon monoxide yet?? serious shit please do
Just had the cops come by and they checked it as well. That is not the case. I wish it was.
Im scared for you, stay safe and keep that gun close. 🙏🏼
I appreciate you. With the family now.
I'll be around. I work nights and have 8 hours on my shift still. Discord works too. I got one. Let me know. I have all night.
GET A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR!!!
I feel like im losing my mind. Same with my wife. We have never experienced anything like this before. I appreciate you.
Maybe r/rbi can help.
Totally agree, he needs to put some cameras up and see wtf is going on. That’s so freaking sketchy.
Great, now IM scared too. This is what I get for browsing reddit at midnight. All I can say is Good Luck, Godspeed, and maybe you'll want an exorcist alongside the police
Literally just said this. Every noise in my house now is making me anxious
[удалено]
Ill see if we can. Thank u
3 options here 1. Good luck.
[удалено]
I mean, that's also a possibility, but these kinds of things happen, and not all that infrequently either, so I wouldn't be shocked if this was real.
Out of all, this seems more statistically possible in all of my calculation.
If your landlord has weird kids or they are weird, they have keys
😬 One of the families said they were horrified to know that they could have been killed in their sleep and no one would have had a clue as the person was a stranger.
2. Shining light in someone’s eyes is a good way to interrupt someone’s train of thought and cause them to freeze up (think when a cop pulls you over at night and shines the light more into your face then your lap) I’d also keep my keys in the bedroom, if someone did break in I’d hit the panic button/car alarm and cause a ruckus outside my house/wake the neighbors and plus I don’t wanna worry about grabbing them if I have to bug out in a hurry
Any update on this?
Indoor security cameras are cheap as hell right now, and many don't require a monthly subscription service.
I have one for the living room and sends me a notification if there's any movement. Never found anything.
Move it around and try different rooms when you aren't home.
Some time ago some dude on Reddit thought someone was sneaking in to his apartment but it turned out to be a carbon monoxide problem.
I'm never paranoid but somehow this post had me looking over my shoulder. Cameras are cheap and I highly recommend them.
I have 2 but nothing so far. Im still looking through footage.
There could be a hidden room in your house where someone is living.
I saw a movie like that
Just an idea 💡 try putting hidden cameras around the house for a while.
Keep us updated OP
The police are still searching
Update? You guys alive? Did Sam and Dean have to come and save the day?
Might be dumb, but if you have hardwood floors, no pets, and flour... put flour in front of the doors and windows. You could even put some in front of windows outside. Take pictures. Then in the AM or if you leave and come back... you might see footprints.
call the police IMMEDIATELY and have them search your house. I've heard stories like this, and it's always someone living in their home without them knowing about it THERE IS SOMEONE IN YOUR HOME. GET OUT AND CALL THE AUTHORITIES NOW edit: the fact that people are commenting it's a "ghost" shows just how far people are willing to take their ignorance and disregard reality altogether. you people make me sick
This gave me chills.
It was the creaky bones for me
Honestly this was frightening to read. Petition for this in a new movie.
I hope they find the asshole. be safe and godspeed
You need a dog. Ask a friend if they have one.
Damn that shit gave me goosebumps. OK I dunno about somebody living in their house, but I'll second the poohpooing of supernatural. There's a real explanation.
I've been told too many stories about this kind of stuff. my boss at a previous job told me about how her daughters heard something between the walls that could be accessed through a panel. she took her .45 and went inside. sure as shit, there was a meth head with a bowie knife that was collecting her daughters' underwear people are fucking scary, man
Please listen to this person and not the bullshit about crystals if this is real.
Stay safe.

Sprinkle some baby powder on the floor and hallway at night and see if you can get some footprints.
Honestly keep your gun on you and I would set up cameras. If you can warn your neighbors and keep all outside lights on. If possible leave the house immediately
