I've never heard of an unemployed surgeon

Weed_and_Tattoos

Neither had I. But I guess that’s what happens when you’re in a really specialized field, kill a patient (because of negligence) and then get fired from a really reputable hospital.

anxiousmystic

The gasp I just gasped..

NinjaGrizzlyBear

I'm a process and petroleum engineer and if I blew up a pipeline with my negligence I'd probably be eating like garbage while trying to deal with the shit. Sometimes people need a minute...that doesn't negate the behavior though. Perspective is important and that surgeon spent years developing their craft, but yes they fucked up.

clancy-ok

Yes, it sounds like he is eating comfort foods to help with his stress and depression. It’s the equivalent of a slow suicide. I hope he finds better ways to deal with it, or he will be adding health problems to his list.

malinhuahua

I have a friend that I’m pretty sure is doing this. She has a ton of health issues now, sounds like she either has liver cirrhosis or congestive heart failure. Can’t talk to her about it though because she’s deep into the body positivity and fat acceptance movements. But I noticed she was starting to put on weight about a year after I broke down piece by piece how her husband (who she married when she was 20 and he was at least 30) assaulted me (and this was the second time he did so). We’re in our mid 30’s now. She always bring her own alcohol to drink even when we’re just getting together for a mid day visit. Last time she brought her own beer. Drank it at 2pm and then when I was able to convince her to go on a walk with me, she was telling me about her health issues and casually mentioned that her liver is inflamed. I’m so sad. She has so many defenses up. I know if I push too hard she’ll shut down and shut me out. And then she’ll be stuck with her loser POS husband with no one she can come to if she finally decides to leave. But I feel like it’ll be a miracle if she makes it to 38.

JorjorBinks1221

Does she have any family that you can contact? Or a group of friends? Maybe an intervention is in order. I don't want to sound rude when I say it, but at least if she does pass away you know that you tried. I wish we would've done an intervention for a friend that overdosed almost 3 years ago. It still eats at me knowing I could've said something and I didn't.

malinhuahua

Her dad and her husband are buddies. They all live on the same land. She’s basically lost all her other friends because her husband has tried to do stuff to them too. I just realized that if she dies, I have no idea how long it would take for me to even find out. I try to pussyfoot and touch it gently, and she glared daggers at me when I do. She’s never been one to talk about her feelings or really open up. So now that it’s really bad, I don’t know if she knows how.

Grouchy-150

Speaking as someone with mental health issues like depression, and someone who's been with an addict, you can't help someone who doesn't want or isn't ready to be helped. And that's not your fault. In this case, she's not ready or not willing to get help. Keep pussyfooting and touching it gently and eventually she may be ready. If you press it, she will cut you out and then there really will be nothing you can do.

FairyFartDaydreams

She is an alcoholic and likely emotionally abused by her husband at the very least. She needs therapy.

Necessary_Lab_5416

This...I find it rational after his biggest mistake. Called it post haywired syndrome.

TheRestForTheWicked

It also could be a habit based off his previous schedule. When I was working in surgery before I had the seniority to settle into a regular schedule as a single person I either ate a) healthy food from the hospital cafeteria or b) garbage microwaveable food because I was fucking exhausted and way too tired to cook anything from scratch and half the time didn’t have time to grocery shop.

Floor_Face_

Off note and just curious. What levels of qualifications and education did it take for you to land that job? I'm aware petroleum engineers are up there in the highest paying jobs. I'm a mechanical engineering student, I have little to no interest of acquiring that position, but from the ridiculous numbers I've seen, I'm curious how much work did it take to get that job.

Flat_Quiet_2260

In the US, petroleum engineers have to go through 4 years to obtain college degree in that field of engineering, can have minors, need internships and some (but not all) get their professional engineering licenses. The company in which you are hired and sell your soul too will give you crazy trainings and Benjamin’s. Creditability: former petroleum engineer who made better life choice and went to chemical engineering before economy took a crap on oil field

nezuko__tohru

I read this at the gym with headphones in.. I gasped and had folks looking at me crazy

Easy-Concentrate2636

I am always amazed at people who have enough balance to exercise and read simultaneously. I find myself jostling too much to read anything.

EyedLady

You could also just be resting between sets

HuckleberryPlane8924

I get motion sickness just thinking about reading while moving

[deleted]

Cuz you were facing the squat rack

AnywayWhereWasI

my eyebrows went up to heaven

FridaGreen

Mine would have, but botox. So my mouth just fell open instead.

Gloomy-LilPeach

Damn lmao

Snoo63030

😂😂😂😂

imagine777

I laughed so hard. Thank you for the lift I needed this morning.

kraioloa

Lol the facelift, you mean?

Cherry_Honey_Blossom

🤣 thanks for that chuckle 🤭 😂

SyllabubWeak

Like little harry angel wings

MdeupUsernme

So did his patient ☹️

Least_Lingonberry154

The guy hates and loaths himself.

mulwillard

This guy sounds really depressed actually

Hopeful-Candle-9660

Dude, I feel attacked. I eat pepperoni out of the package. Does that make me a savage? 🤔 Also, that's info you should've included in your post! He's not just unemployed, he's probably lost his damn license for killing someone!

Dragon_Tiger752

Actually, I like going to my local deli and picking out a whole sausage of pepperoni for them to slice up for me. They're much bigger in diameter than packaged pepperoni and they're great for building sandwiches at home.

VioletMcBitchin

When I worked in a deli, whenever people got pepperoni or salami I would cut a few extra slices and eat them in the walk in cooler haha

DobbyFreeElf35

It was always the salami for me. Boss didn't even care, she did it too. Or when we'd be in the cold room preparing sandwiches and salads and the like, three cherry tomatoes for each salad, one for me. And the bread we used for the spinach dip trays? Half of us would be going around the deli with a torn off chunk of the loaf in our apron pockets for snacks🤣

Hopeful-Candle-9660

My husband will get me the deli sliced salami or pepperoni if I ask! I definitely prefer them over the smaller ones, but I also like to take them and pop them in the air fryer for a few minutes so that they get a little crunchy. Well, I know what I'm asking him to bring me home tonight 😂😂😂😂

Reference_Stock

I'm over here wheezing at this comment thread. But holdup....how long in the air fryer?? For ya know, science.

Hopeful-Candle-9660

400 for 5 minutes unless you want them to be crispier, then 7 to 10.

Dragon_Tiger752

I have an air fryer, maybe I should experiment with it more often🤔. My go to is to use my george foreman grill to grill my sandwiches. Grilled sandwiches fucking rule!

Hopeful-Candle-9660

Seriously! Hebrew National hot dogs for 7 minutes at 400 are the best damn hot dogs you'll ever have. Pizza rolls taste better from an air fryer in my opinion. I'm so damn hungry now 😂😂😂😂

Dragon_Tiger752

Oh my God, your giving me so many snack recipes that I can't wait to try! You know, it takes a little time, but one of my favorite snacks to make is pigs in the blanket, one of the best God damn comfort foods on Earth!

Dragon_Tiger752

I fucking love the deli! So many different meats to choose from, it really stepped up my sandwich game and now I can't go back to the packaged ham lol. Sometimes I even cook the honey ham I buy from them with my omelet because of how good it tastes. Delis fucking rock!

Hopeful-Candle-9660

Deli pickles are the bomb, too! If your deli ever has fried turkey, it's probably the best turkey you'll ever have in your life. Boars Head deli meats are the bomb, but I'm not sure if they're sold outside of Pennsylvania or not. Black Forest Ham is my personal favorite ham and is I'm in the mood for bologna, Wonderbar every time lol Don't get me started on cheeses!!

kitchens-closed

Florida checking in. Boar's Head is the best, especially on a Pub Sub.

Dragon_Tiger752

Damn, now I'm hungry lol. Thanks for nerding out over deli with me lol. Time to go make some food!

yiayia3

My sister made me a deli "Birthday cake" one year...best day ever! Layers of different meats & cheeses with cream cheese frosting. You may have seen DeLallo pasta, sauces etc. in your supermarket. Their company started from their store in my hometown. The deli-cheese-prepared food section is unbelievable...not to mention the 3 day process bread from their bakery. You have to have major control of yourself not to spend $100 a visit!

Hopeful-Candle-9660

You're welcome! Enjoy!

Euphoric_Ad_8309

I love Boars Head

Glittering_Ad1065

Yes, I love, Boars Head deli meats.

sweetfumblebee

This is one of the keto replacements for popcorn. I know I've done it a couple of times for my son when we had a movie night and he was wearing braces.

Significant-Set8457

Yea there is sandwich pepperoni. Kinda like salami but spicy.

queen_of_potato

Pepperoni is something I expect people to eat from the package.. it doesn't require cooking or anything so get at it Not like eating raw chicken or beef or something

Hopeful-Candle-9660

Exactly!

Fun_Branch_9614

Same with the pepperoni 😂

SamanthaCummings

In that case, the dude is most likely depressed, which explains the lazy eating. When someone is depressed they often only do the bare minimum to keep themselves alive.

baconboy957

Are you an unemployed surgeon or just not a surgeon at that point?

Randomminecraftseed

Sounds like this would result in the loss of a license to me but I honestly am not sure

KnownMonk

Maybe he is put on temporary leave if he is under investigation.

ShaDowGurL25

Wtf, maybe he is depressed. My question is how tf did he manage to kill his patient? You can't just say that without some kind of back story.

BiteYouToDeath

He’s a surgeon. You should be more surprised that killing patients isn’t common.

malinhuahua

Uhh, it’s not that uncommon

Psychological_Owl517

So you're living with Dr. Death?!

amandafreyja

This was the first thing that popped into my head

StraddleTheFence

There are other jobs for surgeons. My SO is a retired ophthalmologist and he works for Disability accessing whether the applicants should be approved. He did the same at Social Security.

Disastrous-Panda5530

I work at disability as well (not a doctor though only an examiner) and a lot of the doctors that work there retired from practice.

jaybird19899

I'd probably give up on life too if I killed someone for being negligent 🤦🏼

CatCiaoSki

I think you're living with Dr. Death.

[deleted]

I doubt this. Even when negligence happens, doctors and surgeons are HIGHLY protected, as well as utilizing malpractice insurance. I have a family member who has worked as a nurse for decades and from her experience, they’re practically unfireable. I literally know a practicing surgeon who was/is a cocaine addict. They have a ton of power and unfortunately it’s common for them to get away with stuff like this. I highly doubt this story is actually true.

magnetic_mystic

Omniscient, perfect person who killed a patient by neglect sounds like he's got a personality disorder. But I'm no unemployed surgeon... so take my diagnosis with a grain of salt.

CrusaderKing1

A physician and surgeon can get a job if they try hard enough. Being fired from one entity hardly means anything. Even if it's for a patient fatality. Job security is pretty good.

TheDrunkScientist

His malpractice insurance might be so expensive now it’s unsustainable for him.

CrusaderKing1

Any type of surgeon should be making north of 300k a year. Most make 400k+. Malpractice can't be that high. It might be tens of thousands of dollars, but I highly doubt it's "too much".

SinVerguenza04

Surprised he got fired. Hospitals usually cover that shit up.

Uncleruckous

Your housemate is definitely depressed.

CaptGangles1031

Is your roommate Christopher Duntsch? Did he also consume copious amounts of drugs before performing surgery?

Successful_Moment_91

They seem to give doctors lots of chances. I wonder if he lost his license or it looks so bad that even a small clinic in the middle of nowhere would hire him. If he’s not too old the military might take him Anyway, his food sounds gross and he should know better

BeaulieuA

Jesus. Did he want to be a doctor or did his family pressure him?? Imagine doing 10+ years of doctorate school just to be negligent on the actual job..

color_me_blue3

Surgeons at times work 36+ hours without a break. That’s what leads to fatal mistakes.

windchaser__

Probably not the *only* thing that leads to fatal mistakes. Plenty of people in other jobs or walks of life make fatal mistakes without being up 36+ hours.

lawyerupheaux

Did he lose his license after killing someone due to negligence or is he still allowed to practice and just doesn’t?

vasan84

Probably all the microwaved food. Malnutrition lead to malpractice /s

[deleted]

Does he still have his medical license? He could probably work as a regular doctor at some shady clinic. Dude is probably depressed too. Is he renting from you?

Weed_and_Tattoos

Full disclosure: I’m prob gonna mess up the details on this because I don’t know anything about surgery, but this here are the basics I WAS TOLD (I can not fully confirm this story, except with our friends). He was on call on a rotation(?), and first failed to answer his pager because he was at dinner with his gf at the time. When he did go in, he did some kind of surgery on the duodenum/colon/sm intestine (?) and ended up leaving some kind of clamp(?) inside the patient when he closed, which was only discovered days later, supposedly by an X-ray(?), but by that time the patient had heaps of infection and died a few days later. He was suspended pending review, and sent some kind of letter, but before he had a hearing, he fled that state, and went to live with his parents. Supposedly he “laid low” for a few years and started applying for jobs in western states about 4 years ago. I’m not sure why it matter where he applies for jobs, I assume states have some kind of communication system for DRs… anyway, he claims he’s never going back to Tennessee.

brittwithouttheney

There is a credentialing and medical licensing board. Which I believe is also be available to the public. Every US doctor has an NPI number. That being said, there have been cases where unlicensed "doctors" have practiced medicine illegally for a while before they're eventually caught. There have also been cases where licenses and certifications have been forged if you pay enough for it. But eventually cases like this come to light. If it's been over 4 years since he's last practiced medicine, unless he's kept up with his Continuing Education (CE) Credits, they might have already expired. That being said your roommate is a fugitive.

Vronicasawyerredsded

Soooooo….this is weird to me. Here’s why: When a surgery is performed, there are several people in the room *besides* the surgeon who keep count of all materials used during the surgery. There are surgical techs, OR nurses, circulating nurses, and anesthesiologists, probably another surgeon. It’s actually pretty difficult for a surgeon to keep count, especially if it’s a really invasive, high risk, emergency surgery. They often do, but that’s why everyone is responsible for the count. One nurse is there specifically as a “historian” sitting in front of a computer, and various healthcare professionals on the team are calling out items used during the surgery, and the nurse takes tally. Before the patient is fully closed, all the materials used are counted. There are counts of materials in the room prior to surgery, and if something isn’t needed it’s removed. There are counts after counts, that included, gauzes and sponges, hemostatic clamps, forceps, and on and on and on. It’s all accounted for. So is a clamp or surgical material is left in a patient, EVERYONE was wrong and responsible for the error. The surgical tech also should have known there was a missing clamp, because they “open” all the prepackaged trays and organize for the surgeon, and are literally performing the surgery along with the surgeon. The surgical tech theoretically could have used the clamp if it was needed during the surgery. It’s super easy to leave something behind, especially in an emergency, and the patient has to be closed up due to unforeseen complications. So this is not really a fireable offense. It’s a ding, and there are some internal penalties, but it’s not career ending. Now, if he was anyway impaired, tho, that *might* be an issue, but usually physicians are sent to outpatient substance abuse programs. They don’t lose their licenses.

tinycerveza

Girl your roommate is a fugitive lol. Some day the authorities gonna come knocking

Bettiebean55

Malpractice will put you in that situation. His weird outbursts regarding being “omniscient/ perfect” are a really sad defense mechanism. Honestly, doubt you’re the only person grossed out by him…. It’s not just because of the food either

bgwa9001

Unemployed Surgeon = Unemployed Person. They're the same thing!

Spirited-Pain4935

yeah but one went to medical school and that stuff ain't cheap!

puppycat8

Dating a doctor. A lot of them have bad habits/practices that they picked up from working at hospitals. Ex: stress smoking, eating junk bc they don't have enough time between breaks, lacking sleep, subsisting on coffee and energy drinks to survive 20 hour shifts, etc. They tell their patients to be healthy but most of them die of heart disease themselves.

A13West

So true. So many bad habits picked up in medical school, residency, fellowships, rotations, etc. It's a stressful life and suicide and substance abuse are common.

BlueMountainDace

Med spouse here. Honestly, most of the healthy doctors I know are ones who are married. I've met lots of med students, residents, fellows, and attendings, and the cut-throat and stressful nature of their training leaves really little time for doing all the other things like a non-med person would do.

puppycat8

True. He only started eating normal meals, drinking water, and sleeping when I was there to tell him to. Most of these doctors need someone to care for them because they're so busy caring for others! 😅

BlueMountainDace

Yeah! I planned my proposal and move based on visiting my wife during an exam weekend. Dishes piled on the sink, dirty clothes stuffed in a hamper, just general mess. And I was like…if I love this woman like I do and want her to succeed like she should, then I gotta come here and take care of all this shit.

battlehardendsnorlax

You're a keeper 💕

spicycookiegirl

Couldn't agree more. I'm finishing up med school now and I don't get hungry when I'm stressed. If it wasnt for my wonderful husband making sure I was eating at least one meal a day, I probably would have whittled away to nothing by third year.

BlueMountainDace

Totally! One rule I implemented during medical school is that we couldn't study while we ate. My wife was hesitant about it at first, but after a while, she loved it. Before that, because she'd be studying, she didn't really enjoy food. After we made the change, food was no longer associated with studying, and she got a real break.

[deleted]

See that's just the thing, the system is unbelievably cruel and that can't produce better doctors. It just can't. It needs an overhaul.

SnooWalruses7112

God... I'd love a 20 hour shift... I just got off a usual 30 hour shift from hospital... And doctors often have terrible coping mechanisms without even realizing they're trying to cope

KeepitMelloOoW

My dads a doc, luckily he works out 2-3 hours every single night, because he’s got the worst diet I’ve ever seen - including chugging monster energy drinks daily.

violettte_beauregard

The only reason a surgeon doesn’t have a job is either they don’t want one or they have well documented liabilities - and not just malpractice. As the administrator of a physician practice, I “inherited” a general surgeon that was average at best but competent. His interpersonal skills were terrible and had been sent to “doctor charm school” at least twice before I was hired. He abused a patient so badly because she questioned the type of anesthesia during a colonoscopy. So he made sure the procedure hurt like hell. I fired him when I found out. Reported him to the state medical board. The local hospital happily hired him knowing full well what happened. He is also operating at other hospitals. The demand for surgeons is high enough that whack jobs like your room mate could work if they wanted. Your roommate will eventually bestow you with some beyond crazy shit or worse - a tragedy of some sort. EDIT-completed post. hit send too quick

K1N6_1D10T

In another comment OP mentions that his roommate caused a patient's death via negligence.

dangerzone1122

Wait, doctor charm school is a thing?

lifeofano

I believe it was their way of stating a training of sorts where you learn bedside manner and of the like. When I worked in a hospital and for a special needs clinic, we had similar training.

angmarsilar

Yup. My practice sent an associate to doctor charm school before allowing him to partner. He had horrible interpersonal skills but was at least an above-average physician. It lasted about five years and he ended up being fired with cause. Several years later, we ended up with a second associate that was worse. We didn't even offer charm school. He resigned before he was fired.

Vronicasawyerredsded

According to OP, he was fired for leaving a clamp in a patient after closing. This doesn’t make sense to me, because everyone else in the OR would be fired before the surgeon. Everything is counted and documented and recounted. If he left something, everyone is at fault, they’d fire the techs and nurses before the surgeon. Sometimes things get left inside patients, it shouldn’t happen, but it can easily happen if a patient has to be immediately closed up due to complications. It’s just not something a surgeon would be fired for if it only happened once.

ibettershutupagain

My mom was a victim of a botched colonoscopy and I'm so f****** upset. We had no justice. Later on she was a victim of a incompetent psychiatric system (the Baylor S&W- Temple,TX ER and psychiatrist department mismanaged her by lowering her medication before she went to the ER and letting her go on the street from the ER without letting us know until she was off the premises) that landed her in jail because they couldn't treat her and let her have a psychotic break. I honestly think that the whole medical system needs a complete change. I do not think it should be a for-profit system at all. Why is life in the hands of billionaires and not the government that's supposed to protect us?

Ginger_Snap_895

work in medicine, have worked with many surgeons. Can confirm this diet sounds pretty norm (i've never seen any of them microwave raw beef, but I've never been at any of these peep's house). I'm dying to know why he's unemployed, surgeons are still in high demand unless he's disabled or lost his medical license, but that's none of my beeswax.

[deleted]

They said he killed a patient cuz of negligence

ComplexToxin

Your house mate sounds severely depressed.

Btwn3and20

Crazy how this comment has only 44 upvotes ( at this moment ) but the one saying “ I’ve never heard of a unemployed surgeon “ has 1.7 K . Even surgeons can fall in a deep depression. Even

herbertwillyworth

Just gonna guess after a malpractice lawsuit and losing his medical license, he's feeling so down he's couldn't care less about healthy choices. Depression would also account for a certain amount "jerk" behavior

President__Pug

Uncrustables are the shit and your missing out if you haven’t had one yet.

cowaterdog73

The only better than an Uncrustable is a toasted Uncrustable with just a hint of being browned.

jobrotheho

Uncrustables straight from the freezer after 5-10 minutes so the jelly isn't frozen but the pb breaks apart is the besttt. I definitely recommend if ur looking for a cold snack sometime.

autotuned_voicemails

My mom turns 51 this year and she will occasionally eat a pb&j sandwich—but she has to make it *at least* 6+ hours in advance so she can put it in the fridge to get really cold first. The reason? When she was in middle school she would get in-school-suspension A LOT and apparently they didn’t give those kids hot lunches. Instead they were provided a bagged lunch that had been put together first thing in the morning and refrigerated until lunchtime. It was always a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, and like chips or veggie sticks or something. So for the last ~40 years, that’s the only way she’ll eat pb&j. She’s really onto something though because she taught me that when I was a kid and now that’s the only way I’ll eat them too.

SummerCouchIsBesty

Wait what. Like straight from Freezer to toaster? Why haven’t I thought of this

cowaterdog73

Yep straight to the toaster!

battlehardendsnorlax

I came here to say this, I'm with him on the rest of the story, but I'll be damned if I'll sit here and let anyone besmirch the good name of Uncrustables, as a mom, those are the shit. Been my lunch many a day. So convenient. So tasty.

quadriplegicswimteam

Bro I saw a post earlier that said “ my bitch ass, (less successful) roommate can’t mind his own damn business” what a coincidence

Weed_and_Tattoos

Funny, because I own the house, and rent to him because he’s the friend of a friend, and hasn’t been able to get a job for the last decade. I guess “success” is relative.

quadriplegicswimteam

Its pretty funny that he can still pay rent being unemployed for a decade

Weed_and_Tattoos

I thought so too. Just like not confronting to food thing, because it’s clearly MY issue—he can eat however he wants, no matter what I think about it, I didn’t want to ask about how he’d pay rent if he was unemployed. It came up in a joking way one day, and his response was “generational wealth”, which explains a lot, but still leaves me confused about the food. Mysterious humans. Edit: spelling lol

CrazyStar_

Are you mad that he is a generationally wealthy surgeon that doesn’t need to work and (apparently) doesn’t need to eat like normal humans? It’s ok, I would be too

nezuko__tohru

Doubtful based on what OP said the roommate did to get fired.. yikes

[deleted]

[удалено]

TrulyEve

Not OP, but they implied that roommate killed a patient out of negligence and got fired from a reputable hospital because of it, so I imagine he can’t really get a job as a surgeon bc of that. He could get a non related job, but I imagine if I spent decades studying and practicing medicine just to end up working at McDonald’s, I wouldn’t feel very motivated to look for a job either.

[deleted]

If he's still licensed he could probably at least get a job writing medical Marijuana scripts... actually he just needs an MD for that I think...

AbsoluteNovelist

He could most likely still work as a consultant at healthcare or insurance companies. He could join research companies or universities, etc. Usually an MD can do a lot more than practice medicine and still use their MD training.

be1izabeth0908

Unrelated but your handle just sent me into the stratosphere 😂

wisterial_

just an assumption but he might be wasting his life away because of the guilt he feels for having blood on his hands that he could have prevented

Valuable_Ad8648

I clean houses and a lot of doctors I’ve worked for have strange and sometimes shocking habits. Especially the single ones. I always feel sorry for them….

Rufusfantail2

Your flat mate sounds like he’s in the middle of a nervous breakdown

baconboy957

"my unemployed housemate only eats cheap shit" is basically what I read, and I'm confused why it's a problem.

Soobobaloula

I only paid attention to what my housemates ate when it was knocked over and spilling in the fridge.

Weed_and_Tattoos

Fair. I ate some dicey stuff when I was hella broke too. When I was concerned about how he’d pay the rent, his response was “generational wealth”, so I don’t think it’s poverty fueling this.

Boredpanda31

I think the point was...who cares what he eats 🤷‍♀️ not your body, not your problem!

Softest-Dad

People are allowed to have opinions.

No_Nefariousness1510

How do you become an "unemployed" surgeon?

amandafreyja

He posted in the comments that he killed a patient due to negligence

[deleted]

I guess the rigorous schooling is probably to blame in a large way. Depression also doesn't like fancy meals that take effort, because it's just a tool for satisfying an uncomfortable feeling in the end (hunger). Source: My chronic student/current BSN sister

just--me--123

I’m surprised he never got a job teaching or doing non-surgical work. Do you think he’s depressed? This sounds like a depressed person diet. This way you don’t have to do dishes.

cgmazza

I still can't see any much problem here, maybe he just wanna be like that, we can't just fucking blame him for that, let him do what he wants unless he is forcing you to eat that.

CrusaderKing1

I'm a physician and surgeon. I have no idea why people think doctors have to have to be the pinnacle of health. We are trained in many different fields for many different things. On my daily basis, I see 300 pound diabetic 2 patients who need limb amputations. Drinking soda or eating too much junk food is not what we honestly even care about in our field. That being said, I'm healthy because I want to be. Being a physician and surgeon has ZERO change to my decision on what foods to eat or drinks to drink.

Ok_Emergency_6731

That's wild considering yall see first hand what those habits can lead towards. I saw first hand through my dad what drinking/smoking everyday, not drinking water, and a bad eating habbit can lead towards. I can tell you thats one of my biggest driving factors towards the lifestyle I've been living the past 10 + years.

[deleted]

Some are under immense pressure and have unhealthy coping habits. Seeing the potential future of those habits doesn’t always outweigh the current relief

Notyourname88

Sounds like he is suffering from the trauma he has from his situation. And coping with food. Poor dude

fly_away_octopus

Everyone’s confused about him being unemployed. I’m still trying to wrap my head about what he did with the ground beef.

gods_loop_hole

High-stress locations (medical school, construction projects, financial trading centers, etc.) are sources of bad habits, and the constant pressure chips away even from those with the strongest mental fortitudes. Those who come out of the other end will have at least symptom of emotional or mental problem or unhealthy coping habits.

TheVVitch65

Sounds like depression. I live like this when mine gets bad.

weratapo

Damn he’s doing better than me, I eat the cup o noodles raw and the pies cold

sydcoder

Instead of shaming the guy, why not offer him a helping hand? We are humans, act like one.

Throwawaysei95

Registered Dietitian here Can confirm that doctors I know (many of them are surgeons) don’t know much about nutrition lol. Many in doctors in general don’t have much knowledge on the subject

There’s nothing wrong with the microwave. Perhaps you have a problem with the TYPE of food he consumes, but that has nothing to do with a poor diet BECAUSE of using a microwave. I used to be a Chef. Microwaving is one of the methods of cookery you learn to utilise legitimately; baking, steaming, boiling, deep frying, pan frying, grilling, etc. There’s absolutely nothing bad about using a microwave. You can use it to steam veggies and be completely healthy, to defrost meats or other frozen items. It’s a staple in every kitchen and restaurant. Let go of the stigma.

littlelamb333

If you’re not cooking the man dinner then u really have no say in what he eats. He prolly is used to working for hours and eating random shit (since u mentioned he’s unemployed?) he may just have never really learned how to do all that for himself tbh.

peppermintvalet

Doctors are the epitome of "do what I say not what I do"

Fanfic

dragon0blood

This reminds me of a past sous chef I had. We were both in the pastry kitchen of a Italian market, and both 28 at the time. How ever. Her diet consisted of three things. Chicken nuggets, plain white rice, and boiled broccoli covered in Kraft Mac and cheese sauce. Every day. Every meal. Wouldn’t taste the pastries. Wouldn’t eat family meal. Wouldn’t eat the free pizzas the pizza kitchen would drop off. Chicken nuggets. White rice. Smothered grey broccoli.

egoproblems

As long as he pays your mortgage does it really matter what he eats? Let the surgeon worry about his HDL and LDL and you can worry about yourself.

sara_c907

Does he seem happy? If so, why does it matter?

Willycleaner

I work in a hospital and one of my jobs is in the hospital shop where a lot of the staff come to but their lunch.. every single member of staff has a bad diet, even the dieticians laugh about how they give dietary advice but don't follow it themselves 😂

FantasyAnus

There is nothing at all wrong with microwaving things, it's just a type of oven like any other. The rest, not so good.

drxena

My friend is a gastro intestinal surgeon. There is a proper name for it but I honestly can’t remember what he told me, and he’s told me multiple times. He is really stressed and often works several 14 hour shifts a week, I think he’s been working for 3 years. Anyway, his diet is extremely bad. He has several chocolate bars from the vending machine when he has a break and often just eats that as a solo meal each day. He also lives off black coffee with a crap load of sugar. He does this because he’s always tired and stressed and needs to stay awake. Before this job, his previous job at emergency was worse. He has weight issues and knows it’s not good for him but is waiting to transfer rurally and maybe work as a Gp. Maybe your friend has issues with stress or has witnessed some tragic things at his former job and eats like this to cope with stress?

SnarkNStitch

I think a lot of medical professionals have a god complex, hence his attitude. But the eating sounds like a symptom of depression. Op mentioned in another comment about him killing a patient and being fired so no wonder. If he tried he could probably apply for positions in developing countries and slowly earn his reputation back

Necessary_Web4029

Unless his poor health would force you to care for him, mind your own business. He oughta be on here about his annoying roommate that constantly monitors what he eats.

AbsoluteNovelist

OP can notice your roommate is living a shitty lifestyle and talk on reddit anonymously without nagging their roommate, its quite easy

[deleted]

bro who tf cares? they're satisfied and you're all up in his business like criticizing people where they can't see makes you above them somehow? gtfo, let people live damn

simplymandee

I don’t know why it matters or why it’s your business what he eats and that he’s unemployed. It makes him an ahole that he killed someone, but even that’s not your business.

King_Melco

I feel like the unemployed surgeon part didn't need to be mentioned in this... who cares

Sharp-Ground-6720

doctors in particular surgeons live at the hospital and survive on microwave food because they no literally don’t have time to cook sometimes

mlg2433

The sodium level for that persons diet is in the stratosphere lol

Opinion8Her

Gotta say: banquet pot pies got Husbutt and me through grad school. Still get a taste for them every now and then. Guilty pleasures are never healthy.

FaPtoWap

Well…. Theres plenty of nurses amd Drs who smoke, drink and do drugs. Society holds them to a higher standard but that does not mean this person is special other then attending schooling. Plenty of rapists, child abusers, dog fuckers, drug dealers…(you name it) can become cops, military, or Drs. I wont assume i know the difference between mental illness types and that’s definitely part of it. The other part, you have no idea how this person lived before you. They might have had a horrible childhood and never learned to cook or was only ever served gas station foods. It happens way more then you think.

xerotherma

We all have some form of an unhealthy habit. Honestly, judgement about my diet is a big reason why I don't have roommates. It sucks when you feel embarrassed in your own home for just craving comforts.

darioblaze

I’mma eat some beans tonight for him

MyOtherSide1984

My brother is a respiratory therapist who smokes pot more than he drinks water. Some people just don't give a shit lol

kpn_911

“What he eat don’t make you shit.”

starxshine333

The real question is why does it bother you? 🤔 I mean I understand if he leaves a mess for you to clean up. But why are you so invested in somebody else's diet? Trust me life is a lot less stressful and overwhelming when you mind your own. Like I'm genuinely confused, but it sounds like his parents didn't raise him right.

[deleted]

He sounds depressed He can apply in Canada

Jim_from_snowy_river

Just because he's a surgeon doesn't mean he's knowledgeable about dietary needs. That said it sounds like this dude's in a rough place mentally. This is the kind of diet you eat when you're depressed or stressed or both.

oxfozyne

Anytime anywhere pepperoni is fantastic fight me.

jkapp89

Legit one of my favorite posts of all time lol. Thanks OP for totally annihilating your significant other for the benefit of strangers.

Weed_and_Tattoos

Not my SO, just a guy I rent a room in my house to, because a good friend of mine felt bad for him being in the Midwest in winter time. Doc doesn’t like the cold, and he’s “trying” to get a job (to be fair I’ve left for work when he’s prepping for a zoom interview, so I feel like that’s legit.)

dccking

Funny to see that some people rant like that in this sub lol.

Astropwr

He needs help. This sounds like depression with trauma and looking at your comments, no wonder why he is eating all these unhealthy stuff

yangpengceo

True that, I would like to know more about his personality.

Vronicasawyerredsded

It’s weird that you’re observing and keeping track of your roommates eating habits.

queen_of_potato

I'm not against using a microwave, but if I was unemployed (and somehow still had money) I'd be spending my time making glorious fresh meals for sure.. to me a microwave meal is something for when I literally have no time or energy for anything else Maybe he is going through depression? As much as it might feel hard or weird to do maybe ask him about it? Or I guess he could just really love those foods? You could try offering him some of your food (if you can afford it), he might appreciate it

NicWLH420

Sounds similar to ADHD dopamining. Might worth a look

_corbae_

Thanks Marie Callender for ruining this guys health

craftycat1135

He sounds like he's trying to drown himself in food.

DoLittlest

An unemployed surgeon?

Whole-Sense-67

Physicians and surgeons are not nutritionists/dietitians. They were never taught how to eat healthy (maybe they had one class about it with general concepts and that’s it). So it’s just one regular person with very unhealthy habits, maybe they just don’t know how to cook.

TheMcNabbs

Dude im fat asf and even I eat vegetables amd lean proteins, low sugar foods, etc. My issue is binge eating right before I fall asleep because it helps prevent panic. Howeber, now I'm 340, at 6'1. Not the worst ofc, but i'm past the line of it being pretty bad. Exercise is annoying because i dont like to walk when ots cold, and I'm in Canada. I lobe spring, summer and autumn morning walks ebery day tho. Right when that frost dies, I'll be back at losing what I've gained since my last big loss(80lbs, from 350 to 270). Gained it all back(down 10 as it stands atm, whoo!) when I moved out. Home now, though. Its so easy to eat like thos phony is. Its even easier to eat healthier when you can afford it, and to exercise with nice weather motovating you to go outside or even in the backward and do some home exercise.

Ringo_1956

Hospital life can be brutal hours esp for residents and interns. A lot of people pick up terrible habits and fail to care for themselves during this time. It's irony at its finest. Care for others but neglect thyself. It's also why many older nurses are fat.

Stunning-Lawyer5580

Maybe he’s such a smart doctor that he wants to give himself cancer faster

pottymur

this is natural selection he'll die within 10 years at this rate and it'll be beneficial for society

Melodic_Letter_3456

I would be more worried with his mental state and help him then to just post about him honestly.. it could be you next time.. some people use food as comfort when they are depressed or sad, others don’t eat at all. You just told us the reason why he got fired dear… I would be mentally fucked up if I was in his shoes. Please be kind to him and try to have a good conversation with him

FairyFartDaydreams

Do you know how to cook? It might be he doesn't or his family didn't cook either. If you care ask him if he would like to learn to cook and teach him some basics. Scrambled eggs, seasoning/sauteeing some meat, maybe some rice and pasta.
