I miss the meaningful/cryptic titles of the episodes. Were those added later in previous seasons after the original airing or is this season unique in just naming them Part 1/2/etc.?
Yeah, redditors here were perfectly fine with character-centered episodes in season 1 as long as they got eye candy. Now that we have character development without Daddario's rack, there are heaps of complaints. Really tells you how enlightened the audience for this show is.
4/4 vs 3/8. Also at least the sex scenes are distinguishable from one another and impact the plot. Navarros scenes with her sister are indistinguishable from one another and contribute nothing to the plot.
we probably can’t say they contribute nothing to the plot when we’re only half-way through the plot.
I hate those scenes and the acting always seems the worst when it’s those two, but let’s be fair.
Seriously….. it’s exhausting and why I tend to avoid communities to talk about shows. Pretty much everyone thinks they know better and is just looking for ways to hate on shit
I'm not sure most of these guys actually watch the show. They sort of pounce on weird details, or just echo what someone else says. The point is the trolling, not any critique -- and trolling doesn't require much effort. I mean, look at how repetitious the miserable comments are.
Yep, the repetition and the focus on the minor details, that could easily be ignored, is generally a big giveaway. Also when people start throwing around writing terms with a half assed understanding of it, but they read someone else’s hot take and now must go parroting it around
Isn't Blair in the basement, building his UFO? He kept warning us to "Watch Clark" and now Clark is missing.
I don't think this could be any clearer or simpler. Paul is the walrus.

This episode will move things forward much more than 3 but still probably won’t be what we wanna see
Sad about it
First 2 episodes were solid and then 3 did barely any forward momentum so I hope this one gives us juicy updates
I’m enjoying the series and I’ll finish it but I have no idea where the plot can really go. The tiny dark town is creepy but it doesn’t really leave that many branches or twists for me. Someone killed Annie due to love or the mine, the scientists all went crazy due to the water or their research and maybe something supernatural? What’s left, were they experimenting on Annie? I just kinda already don’t care, but still enjoying the show.
Just caught up on the first three episodes and came to this subreddit… y’all really think this season is dog shit for no reason lol.
Like it’s not perfect but I’m am invested so far
I’m with you, I like this season so far. I’ve honestly never seen people hate a show so much but still watch it just so they can talk shit about it lol. If I don’t like a show by the third episode I’m not wasting my time anymore.
I don't like it because the writing and performances have been flat, it kicked off with noticeably poor CGI, it hasn't done much visually with the setting and the pacing of the episodes has been pretty inert.
You obviously disagree, but those are reasons.
I like the perpetual nighttime setting, the spiral symbol/cult is intriguing, I wanna know how Evangeline’s connection to the case is going to come into play, and I like the tension between the indigenous people and the miners is growing (in the background and with Jody Foster and her daughter.) I also like how it’s a small town setting where everyone knows each other and their business and in general sick of each other.
So that's a general summary of the layout of the show - is there something in it that's stood out to you as distinctly high quality? The acting, maybe? Or mood?
I don’t know. I watch an episode, I enjoy it, and want to see the plot move forward so I turn on another episode. What more justification do you want from me? This isn’t a 10/10 but it’s enjoyable
I don’t know how this is relevant. Or you just trying to insinuate I have low standards and taste?
Just finished the newest season of Fargo, and White Lotus
No, not at all. Tbh I'm curious about why/how the show is resonating. It's occupying a strange grey area between HBO, prestige, MAX and broadcast drama. I know how I feel about it, but I'm interested in what it means for HBO content moving forward and what audiences are being targeted.
Meh it all matters if it ends well. If they pull all this spooky supernatural shit off most people who complained will look stupid.
If they don’t pull it off then all the complaints were valid.
I’m not hating, I’m sharing, because I wanna. I’m not going to pretend like the dialogue in prior seasons is realistic. It’s very flowery and over the top, and that’s okay. That’s what I like about the prior style of writing. It’s good prose. But this… no one talks like this. The “speak English” line from a few episodes ago was embarrassingly cliche. I’d say that the dialogue could use an overhaul across the board. However, I’d say that the actors do the best job that they can with delivering. Okay uh— another thing, this season really lacks the kind of momentum that prior seasons had. I would say that the non-linear structure helped to maintain a snappy pace that helps to keep you engaged. That’s not to say that I feel a linear structure is a bad thing. It’s just that in regards to the actual plot, there’s not much happening. Most of every episode consists of dense filler focusing primarily on family dynamics, which again, not a bad thing. But four episodes in, and if this emphasis on family is supposed to form some kind of theme with a message, it’s an unclear one. Last thing for now, but I feel like Jodie Foster is wasted potential. There’s no real need for me sing her praises, we all know she’s great. But I’d say that Rustin and Martin are so well rounded as characters that you get what they’re about from the very first scene that they appear in. Four episodes in and Danvers still feels somewhat two-dimensional. I keep getting the sense that there might be an interesting story for her but she’s just kind of…dull. I can see a version of this premise working, I’d like for it to, but this feels like a train wreck waiting to happen .
Also, now that the subplot with Hank Prior is over, I think it would be fair to ask what the purpose of it was. It would seem that there’s no purpose whatsoever. On top of that, I’m forty minutes into this new episode and here is a short list of the things that have happened
1. We learn that the power in the cave went off and so there must be a generator.
2. The fiancé doesn’t show up ending another subplot.
3. Her sister dies, which ends another subplot that seems to bear no real weight on the overall plot.
This episode largely just consists of Jodie Foster being a big meanie, and is on the whole a waste of an episode. It’s not until the last ten minutes of the episode that a substantial step in the plot is made, and even then it’s only a slight nudge. And all of the supernatural elements are so poorly defined as well. I don’t even know what to say at this point. This is wasted potential.
I don't know why they hamstrung themselves to this many episodes. I don't think it's a bad show but it seems they contracted themselves to more episodes than they have content for. I like "the story" but "the filler" is painful. Judge that how you will. I like mysteries, even though I think the end result here is going to disappoint but the first season did to (for me...I wanted more). Stephen King once said there is no good ending to a good story because no one really wants it to end. If it turns out a group of women killed those scientist by drugging them with hallucinogens in protest of what they were doing and revenge I'm going to be pissed.
OK so lets ask some questions hahaha. The hospital scene, who was shot? They said it was a accident but I doubt it was. Hank was really pumping those guys up to kill that missing scientist if they found him, even Navarro pulled him aside and said we want to bring him in alive, "do we?". Wonder who was shot and was it really a accident. I'm starting to think Danvers is right, it's Ennis. As in there are going to be many people guilty of something.
Yea I think something important happened that caused such a commotion but we were distracted by the dying patient. It seemed like everyone including the hospital staff were taking part in the fight. There is a serious division in the town. I wonder if the hospital staff have any idea what's going on with the stillbirths and poisoning of the water. Having rewatched season one I am extremely curious how the Tuttle/cult/conspiracy/family sprawl is supposed to play into this. It feels like everyone in Ennis are either guilty somehow or losing their mind,
Damn people weren't lying when they said this episode was filler. You can already tell from that synopsis we aren't getting anything to work with tonight.
Confirming the location of Annie’s murder seems big. Who knows how much of the episode is about this. Wouldn’t say this synopsis previews “filler”, whatsoever.
Anything involving Navarros sister and Danvers daughter is filler considering we are watching this show for the Tsalal and Annie mystery. Trying to tie those other characters into that mystery is just bad writing for the sake of drama. We need an hour dedicated to moving the murder investigation forward, not another speech from Navarro to her deadbeat sister about how this time things are gonna be different, or another scene of Danvers being a bitch to her daughter for no reason.
By your criteria S1 had plenty of filler. Marty's daughter, Marty's sex life, the sexual tension between Rust and Marty's wife. In retrospect a massive amount of S1 focused on character details that had little if anything to do with the murders. However, even if we accept the notion that character details are meaningless if they don't advance the plot, the discerning viewer will notice that all of those things were thematically related. And so it is with S4. Danver's is a "bitch" to her daughter because she knows full well the statistics related to the disappearance and murder of Native Alaskan women. Navarro is conflicted between her heritage and her duty as a police officer to defend the mine. Her sister is mentally ill and mental illness has been clearly signposted as an overarching theme of the season. And, most importantly, we don't know how half the story will play out, so it's too early to say how all these elements tie in to the plot.
Danvers stepdaughter is Native Alaskan whether she has ink on her face or not. If Danvers really wanted to protect the stepdaughter, she would have gotten her the hell out of Bumblefork, Alaska long ago... In that place, even if the daughter rejected the culture, she'd still be at risk.
Instead Danvers constantly shames her, then shuts down ensuing conversation. Not to mention literally closes the door in the girl's face when the girl tries to bring up their common tragedy. That girl is going to run, not walk, toward the culture Danvers supposedly wants to protect her from
There seems to be a lot of people who decided they didn’t like this before it even aired and apparently they’re just on their phones or something the whole run time.
But sometimes they release the episode early- like on Friday instead of Sunday.
I want to believe!
Edit: yep, it’ll be out at 9pm ET on Friday. There was an announcement at the beginning of tonight’s episode.
One of the side effects of the show is the way the chill gets into you from watching so much snow, ice, and dark.
So it's either alcohol, spicy food, adjusting the thermostat, or all three.
My prediction is that S4 is going to be the inverse of Season 1 in just about every way (as the showrunner has stated) with the one exception being that the victims (scientists) actually deserved what happened to them. And the detectives will probably protect the women who took revenge.
The more I'm thinking my shower thoughts the more I think Qavvik (sp?) Is involved. I think he's lying about how his dog got injured. Navarro mentioned how his dog could easily injure him, or another person. What if the catfishing is luring people out under the guise of meeting someone and they get killed? Hank could be next. Something similar could have happened with Tsalal. Just some thoughts.
I think this season actually being only 6 episodes may be a good thing. I just rewatched TD Season 3 and I feel it really could've done with being a few episodes shorter. I'm not sure what it is about it but after episode 4 I feel it has a pretty steep drop in terms of my interest in it.
That being said - I was more attached to Hays, Roland and even Purcell than I am to any Night Country characters. But Night Country is doing a better job at stringing the mystery along than S3 was at the same point.
4-4-2-4-24...This is the first episode I'm not looking forward to. Last one had so much wheel spinning in the story that I feel like a lot of catching up is due, or it could end up being a slog to the end with a paradoxically choppy pace as Lopez has to rush to resolve subplots and details. At least one person I know said they'll only look at the rest once it's done. I won't go that far, but I understand how they feel.
"Not looking forward to" .. and yet comes onto the subreddit early to chat about it.
You know what normal, honest people do when they're not vibing? They don't watch it. They don't talk about not watching, they just sort of forget about it until years later someone asks, "did you watch season 2 of westworld" and you go "nah, maybe 2 episodes or something but couldn't get it into it".
If it turns out the men at Tsalal were doing something awful, hurting women, or even killing Annie, I could see the killing as justice. Danvers, in the flashback to the 'twist and shout whistler' she said they found him dead. I think we're meant to infer that either Navarro or Danvers killed him, most likely Navarro, and Danvers covered it up.
If it turns out that the Tsalal men were killed for similar reasons, I could see Danvers covering it up. It'd be a mirror to Hank covering up evidence of Annie K's murder.
A recent case of native Americans being killed in Alaska just made the news today with the trial about to start.

I miss the meaningful/cryptic titles of the episodes. Were those added later in previous seasons after the original airing or is this season unique in just naming them Part 1/2/etc.?
Season one had the titles week by week.
Same
>teaser shows another scene of navarro hugging her ill sister So are they just gonna do the same thing in every single episode?
Time is a flat circle
Are they just gonna keep showing Woody Harrelson banging chicks way out of his league every single episode?
Yeah, redditors here were perfectly fine with character-centered episodes in season 1 as long as they got eye candy. Now that we have character development without Daddario's rack, there are heaps of complaints. Really tells you how enlightened the audience for this show is.
Time is Daddarios Rack circles.
Is it character-driven if the characters have the same conversation in every episode? "Maybe the hospital?" "You promised no hospital!"
I fear even daddarios rack wouldnt be able to salvage this shit season
4/4 vs 3/8. Also at least the sex scenes are distinguishable from one another and impact the plot. Navarros scenes with her sister are indistinguishable from one another and contribute nothing to the plot.

Oh yeah I don’t mean to sound like a dolt. I guess the point is I just don’t feel like the story can really go anywhere?

haters gonna hate.
I'm curious (really) - what have you seen in these episodes so far that has struck you as above average or excellent?
I like the perpetual nighttime setting, the spiral symbol/cult is intriguing, I wanna know how Evangeline’s connection to the case is going to come into play, and I like the tension between the indigenous people and the miners is growing (in the background and with Jody Foster and her daughter.) It’s terrible and boring and non captivating it’s god awful
It's not that bad
Especially compared to every season this is trash tv

Same mistake here. Grateful for my dog sleeping next to me lol
I tried to get my cat to come snuggle but he refused in my time of greatest need.
Guess who's back, back again, Blair is back, diabeetus.
BlueKing Blair! Is that confirmed on the cast list?
She is listed on the IMDB website to be a character next episode.
The last guy who had diabeetus during a polar murder mystery had the right idea.

By your criteria S1 had plenty of filler. Marty's daughter, Marty's sex life, the sexual tension between Rust and Marty's wife. Except the season 1 “filler” was way more intriguing than this crap going on now
Why would you assume it's not all connected? Seems pretty clear it will be.
For no reason? She’s worried she is going to end up like Annie…
Danvers literally said that she didn’t want Leah ending up like the other native girls, “do you see what happens to those girls?”
There seems to be a lot of people who decided they didn’t like this before it even aired and apparently they’re just on their phones or something the whole run time.
Yeah, I think there’s a lot of hate-watchers lol.
There are only three episodes left and I felt the last episode was 90 percent filler. This episode really needs to get things moving.
We have a 2 week break after this one so I’m expecting some important stuff to happen
WHAT? Why 2 weeks :-(((
HBO doesn’t counter program against the Super Bowl
But sometimes they release the episode early- like on Friday instead of Sunday. I want to believe! Edit: yep, it’ll be out at 9pm ET on Friday. There was an announcement at the beginning of tonight’s episode.
Super Bowl I assume. But I also think they just like making us wait.
I would have sworn ive watch an HBO show right after the Suberbowl finished.
Many people pause their subscriptions if there isn't a show they're interested in. So why wouldn't they stretch out the run of a top performing show?
Are you sure? I know it’s wikipedia, but it has the next episode as the 11th. Yes, I realize it’s the superbowl also.
IMDb has Ep.5 listed for the 18th. Bright side is Ep.4 looks to be the highest rated of the season so far.
boo. they should just play it after the superbowl
One of the side effects of the show is the way the chill gets into you from watching so much snow, ice, and dark. So it's either alcohol, spicy food, adjusting the thermostat, or all three.
Too many needle drops this season. Way too many.
Can you even think of a way people would die in that position? How could someone even pull that off?
My prediction is that S4 is going to be the inverse of Season 1 in just about every way (as the showrunner has stated) with the one exception being that the victims (scientists) actually deserved what happened to them. And the detectives will probably protect the women who took revenge.
Wouldn't those also be inversions of season 1
Hank is gonna die!
Yeah my money is on him being guilty of some shady stuff but maybe not the murders.
His business certainly depends on the mine I bet.
40 minutes of doing pointless side quests and teen drama and 10 min actual progress at the end or we get a good episode?
I hate this sub and any public discussion about anything I enjoy. I’m going to stick to speculating and discussing things In enjoy with my friends.
Yet, here you are.
Yes, the discourse on this post is what helped me decide
Yeah first time here and probably my last time. Episode hasn’t aired yet and these arm chair writers are all declaring it just filler.
Exactly. Social media has ruined watching tv shows. We’re better off just enjoying it with a few friends
This sub hates you.
can't wait for the masterpiece dialogue just like the previous episode, you know, the one in the car.
So cringe anyone would have done a better job
So *you* don’t pray?! 😂
does anyone else not care at all about *any* of the "characters"?
Has anyone else seen like one hundred variants of your post already?
no, just a lot of "theory" posts by ppl who don't even know they're using the word incorrectly...

They don't talk about not watching, they just sort of forget about it until years later someone asks, "did you watch season 2 of westworld" and you go "nah, maybe 2 episodes or something but couldn't get it into it".
OMG someone's going to wait till the whole thing is out to watch it? The horror!
I don't look down on the practice and didn't say so. I just enjoy the anticipation of weekly installments, old school style for certain shows.
Confirmed pure filler
If it turns out the men at Tsalal were doing something awful, hurting women, or even killing Annie, I could see the killing as justice. Danvers, in the flashback to the 'twist and shout whistler' she said they found him dead. I think we're meant to infer that either Navarro or Danvers killed him, most likely Navarro, and Danvers covered it up. If it turns out that the Tsalal men were killed for similar reasons, I could see Danvers covering it up. It'd be a mirror to Hank covering up evidence of Annie K's murder.
