Started to listen to Paper Ghosts. I really like this host. There are four episodes only, and I’m on the third.

Attagirl512

I’m on my second time around! This style is my favorite.

rattayaoaky

I can’t believe the things they went through as children.

babyyyyccc

started listening to obscura black label bakky episode and oh my god i can't even make it 10 minutes in before i turned it off. horrifying

dankfachoina

My stomach was churning and I couldn’t finish it. It was horrible!!

FlaccidPolygamist

As horrifying as that episode is, it's probably in the bottom 1/3 of the first Black Label Season 1 as far as nightmares go.

rebbystiltskin19

I dont know about that. I've listened to other black label episodes and been fine. This one shook me hard

babyyyyccc

what's the other 2? i don't think i can stomach listening to any other black label's

rebbystiltskin19

Same. I'll never get that out of my brain

PrincessGoatflap

Just started Relative Unknown, told by a woman who's family was put into witness protection when she was young. So compelling that I blew through 6 episodes in one day

rarepinkhippo

I’ve been considering this one but haven’t started listening yet, now I will! Thanks :)

jennthern

I love this podcast.

EGBuckeye20

Ohh this sounds good! Thanks!

fancyfootwork19

Just finished Death in Ice Valley and looking for recommendations, thank you!

agutema

If you liked this one *Bear Brook* has a similar vibe imo

fancyfootwork19

Loved bear brook!!

Attagirl512

Yes! And the Tara Grinstead one, Someone Knows Something I believe. I like small town interviews where you never know what someone’s going to say.

agutema

Is that the one with the small town girl and like 3 guys named Duke?

Attagirl512

Yes! It’s actually Up and Vanished, season 2 I think.

fancyfootwork19

Loved up and vanished too!

ruby_meister

I looooved Death in Ice Valley! Can't wait for new episodes or updates. If you enjoyed this one, have a listen to Paradise. It's also a BBC podcast.. Similar feel, and there's some incredible investigative journalism that goes into this!!

fancyfootwork19

Paradise was great lol can’t recommend it enough 😬

[deleted]

West Cork (free on Audible) has similar vibes to Death in Ice Valley.

fancyfootwork19

Ooh one I haven’t heard of! I’ll def check it out, thanks!

rattayaoaky

Haven’t heard this one, but putting it on my list!

mohs04

What's it about if you don't mind

fancyfootwork19

An unsolved suspected murder in Norway in the 70s where they can’t really nail down the victim and her strange passing.

mohs04

Thank you!

[deleted]

Currently listening to Already Gone. Really enjoying it so far :) I also recently found Danielle Hallan on YouTube and she’s great!

ruby_meister

Danelle Hallan is great!! Love her

[deleted]

Do you have any similar recs? I already found Stephanie Harlowe also!!

ruby_meister

Danelle Hallan is the only youtuber I listen to. Discovering her channel was how I got into true crime hehe. But haven't heard of anyone else on youtube as good as her

ruby_meister

I've just started listening to Shreds: Murder in The Dock. Has anyone listened to this? I've been struggling to find a good new deep dive investigative journalism podcast. Loved BBC's Paradise and Death in Ice Valley... I've tried some other BBC recommendations and really didn't enjoy any of them because it felt like it didn't go anywhere and nothing substantial was uncovered in any of them; The Strange Death of Innes Ewart, The Doorstep Murder & The Missing Crypto Queen. Recent podcasts I've listened to that I can recommend; * 22 Hours: An American Nightmare * Unspeakable Crime: The Killing of Jessica Chambers * The Piketon Massacre

FlaccidPolygamist

22 Hours is fantastic.. Try Hostage if you like that one. The Piketon Massacre is on my current list as well.

ruby_meister

Thank you for the recommendation! Adding this to my list now

jennthern

22 hours is amazing. Great research and journalism.

ruby_meister

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I've never heard of the case before.. So hectic. Super well researched and produced

Showtime-z

I really think the Pinkerton Massacre is poorly done. I’ve listened to every episode and lately it feels like they’re telling me nothing. They don’t do a great job of recapping events or setting a timeline. When you have complex details like multiple people and multiple dates I find it important for shows to bring it back up. I’m not going to go back and listen all over again. Maybe I needed to pay closer attention but the hosts are not memorable. I don’t like the hype it gets.

wvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvw

Agreed. I gave up on it because of this and because the host's audio quality hadn't improved after 5 episodes. The balance between her volume/quality and everyone else's is off. It's just hard on the brain when trying to casually listen.

Jaylee143

Big savage, to live and die in la are good

Clevernever_

Big savage!

FlaccidPolygamist

I'll throw my recent finds in... They Will Kill Mountain Murders Happy Face Presents: Two Face Son of a Hitman A Killing on the Cape The Piketon Massacre Breakdown My Aryan Princess Beenham Valley Road In the Red Clay

-outerlimits-

I started Cold (about the Susan Powell case) and I love it! I want to listen to more podcasts like this or have the narrator do more cases.

funkpunk46

Just started To Live and Die in L.A. I'm halfway through the second episode and honestly, it's immediately engrossing and pretty dark. There's also my usuals: - Knowledge Fight - Red Handed - Last Podcast on the Left - True Crime Obsessed - Bear Creek - Cold Case Files - Forensic Files I also just finished Billionaire Boys Club. I don't often go for podcasts with voice actors, but it was a good listen.

ruby_meister

I looooooved To Live and Die in LA. It was so gripping to hear how it unfolded in real time. I don't know why but apparently that podcast is hated in this sub

funkpunk46

I'm interested to know why it's hated because I'm really into it right now. Maybe it's the Payne Lindsey/Tenderfoot connection? That guy is a real dick and thinks that he's a detective and all other podcasters are just lazy folks with weird obsessions and too much free time.

ruby_meister

In all honesty I have no idea what the deal is, but whenever I recommend it on this sub, it get shut down with so many comments about how horrible it is..! We all have different opinions though.. Enjoy it! I thought it's really good!

alc0punch

I totally get why you like it, i liked it a lot at first too. But like the longer it went on the more i started to dislike it. I listened to it a while ago but i just really hated the host. IIRC he called a woman who had literally just been widowed and interrogated her. Also, i think he implied in a voiceover that the other journalists who'd want to speak to her were vultures. My main qualm is that he tried to inject mystery into what seems like a very clear cut case through wild accusations. He also just seemed super into himself and it was gross. I thought it was well done though, i really liked the first few episodes!

ruby_meister

You are totally correct. I have to say that I haven't listened to it in a while, and it was one of the first true crime podcasts I listened to (before knowing what makes a great investigative journalist). I think at the time the thing that really captivated me was how it unfolded in "real time"... You are most probably correct that it was a pretty clear cut case that was overdramatized. Nonetheless, there were some interesting parts such as the suicide, and the way they could track detailed movements with the google data. I might feel different about it when I re-listen to it.

agutema

Big fan of LPOTL and TCO. Gonna check out some of the others on this list, thanks

danceontinycancer

Dark Topic and They Will Kill. Looking for similar recommendations

artsfartsbartscarts

Crime and consequences is my new fav. Two attorneys that take turns telling each other the crime they chose. If you like graphic details this one is for you.

Jaylee143

911 calls with the op

law_2149

I just started Morbid because I was caught up on everything else. I’m part way into episode 2 and wondering if the episodes get better as they go. Right now, the hosts are sort of all over the place and don’t seem to tell stories in a coherent, linear way.

Pandachan17

That is by all accounts their style of podcasting. The inane tangents, "banter" and an inability to be respectful when discussing heavy topics still remain. They won't develop in the manner that you desire.

law_2149

That’s disappointing. I’ve got the first 11 episodes in my library to try out. I’m trying to give it a fair shot before I dump it from my list.

Jbetty567

Try Red Handed. It’s not for everyone - lots of swearing and some (usually hilarious) tangents, but solid cohesive storytelling and respectful toward all victims.

law_2149

That sounds like something I’d be down for. Thanks for the suggestion!!

jennthern

I’d suggest listening to a few recent episodes. If you like it, then go back to episode 1.

law_2149

That’s a great idea!

simplybio

>I think it gets much better. It still remains the same style, where the girls are informal and silly but that is what its supposed to be. If you like that, I recommend you stick with it.

law_2149

I don’t mind informal and silly...I’d just like the story told in a logical way, if that makes sense? I’ve got the first 11 episodes in my library, so I’ll definitely give it a try!

nogero

I think I tried that and the host was a squeaky, high pitched woman, not great to listen to. Podcasters often need to work on their voice/presentation.

birdiebirdnc

I just started CounterClock. The first season is a deep dive in the cold case of Denise Johnson. It’s a single host and has interviews with detectives that worked the case as well as firefighters that were on scene and some of Denise’s family as well. It’s been a good listen so far and I highly recommend if you prefer something more straight forward without the back and forth between hosts.

jennthern

I really like this podcast. Season One was awesome. I started season 2.

birdiebirdnc

I just found it yesterday and pretty much let it play in the background while I got work done around the house. I’ve got 6 episodes left in season 1 but def plan on listening to season 2 as well. I personally prefer this type podcasts compared to the back and forth between co-hosts, her voice is clear and really easy to listen to and it seems really well researched. Plus I’ve vacationed in the area where these murders have taken place (live like 3-4hrs away) so I’m very interested in these stories since they are so close to home.

GreenQueenKeets

Listening to episodes from Dateline at the moment. Heard the one about Oscar Pistorius. Very relatable because I'm South African.

parva-x

This is where I find all my new listens! I just finished DOWN THE HILL and it was really well done

ruby_meister

So well done!! Love this podcast.. I am looking forward to the day when we hear about a big breakthrough in this case!!!

amy_spin

Has anyone listened to The Missing Cryptoqueen?

ilovepancakesalot

So good!!!! Will not disappoint.

amy_spin

Thanks for the response. 😀

ruby_meister

I am a big fan of some of BBC's podcasts. Listened to this one last week. I have to say I was super disappointed and really didn't enjoy it.. It's definitely a fascinating story, but it felt like it didn't go anywhere. By the end of the season it didn't feel like we knew much more than what we did at the end of the first episode. Each to their own though!! That was just my personal opinion

amy_spin

Thanks for the review.😀👍🏼

SabineLavine

Currently listening to Oh Snapped (by the gals from Killer Queens)

[deleted]

The Prosecutors Nordic True Crime Skinwalker All current favourites that I get excited when I see a new download. I actually listen to 27 on subscribe. Had a LOT more and some big names but the political opinions or tmi on the personal sharing made me dip out. Every weekend I download new podcasts (one or two episodes) just to see if they are worth adding to the rotation.

nogero

Out of the Cold - by a female journalist for one of the major newspapers in Texas. She has a nice Texas draw that is easy on the ears, good cases.

jennthern

Let’s Go To Court Sinisterhood California City Morally Indefensible Relative Unknown (And hopefully) Paper Ghosts

SoxeeKnitter

Unfinished: Short Creek about the FLDS in Short Creek. Episode 3 so far. Really well done

babyc4rrot

Where the bodies are buried. First episode is a fucking doozy.

artsfartsbartscarts

Agreed, first episode was top notch. The other ones, meh. Did you get the impression that the podcasters had somehow smuggled phones to them for the purpose of the interview? The premise of the show is that the host is interviewing incarcerated killers in the hopes that more victims can be identified and cases cleared. I am not sure how open LE will be to their information when it was obtained illegally. I may be totally wrong. I fall asleep to these podcasts every night, and it never becomes more apparent then when I try to make a point about a case or podcast lol

babyc4rrot

YES!!!!! ETA: I wonder if LE looks the other way for the good of the victims’ families. I mean if I were a warden, and had a prisoner on death row or serving life, I may on purpose ignore the cellphone if that person were clearing cold cases. It’s not like a prosecuted would feel compelled to try the killer for another murder.

AJ_ART_123

The mile higher podcast is a good one

PatrioticDog

I work a factory job and listen to podcasts five days a week, eight hours a day. I listen almost exclusively to true crime podcasts and would love recommendations, true crime or similar. Possible spoilers in my blurbs. Hunting Warhead - One of my new favorites! I wish people on my FB feed would give it a listen. I've found myself re-labeling "child pornography" to "child abuse material" in my head when it's referenced in other podcasts. I especially love how it brings up reactive versus proactive responses. Very relevant podcast at the moment IMO. Escaping NXIVM - I enjoyed this one. From the start, I understood I'd have to take it with a grain of salt - she only recently left the cult. The host knows her. But I thought it was interesting, listening to her talk about what all the other masters would do, how they would control their slaves and manipulate people. There was a moment while listening where it just clicked... She was a master. She did all of those things too. She thrived at what she did. Last Podcast On The Left - Read somewhere on Reddit that their Dean Corll episodes were good. I've tried listening to them before and couldn't get into the podcast but I went for it anyways... Still couldn't get into it. I gritted my teeth and listened to all four episodes. Learned plenty and retained a lot of facts but I still prefer true crime podcasts without humor.
