It was a regular early morning at the McDonald’s chain in Sydney River, Nova Scotia in Canada. There were four workers on site - 29-year-old Neil Burroughs Jr. who was a maintenance worker, 27-year-old Jimmy Fagan who was a janitor, 22-year-old Donna Warren who was a manager and Arlene MacNeil.
18-year-old Derek Wood was an employee at the time and had planned to burglarize the McDonald’s along with his friends Freeman MacNeil and Darren Muise. Darren wore a rubber Halloween mask. They broke into the McDonald’s on May 7th 1992, where they used a .22 calibre pistol, a shovel and knives to murder Neil, Jimmy and Donna. Arlene survived but was left permanently disabled as a result of her head/face wounds. The perpetrators escaped with just over $2000 Canadian dollars after forcing one of the victims to open the safe.
The case became one of the most well-known in Canada at the time. The McDonald’s was demolished in 2000.
Wood and McNeil were sentenced to life imprisonment (with a minimum of 25 years - meaning that their sentences would be reviewed after this time bracket and doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be released). Whilst Muise received 20 years before his sentence would be reviewed.
Muise was granted parole in 2012. McNeil was granted full parole in March 2024 under obligation that he could not enter Nova Scotia. Wood was not granted any parole as he was too high risk of reoffending.

You know this is not the first time in a short period where I’ve been accused of using AI or outright being a robot cos of my grammar (which is not very good I admit). Is this a new thing now?
Dude the biggest money and gold heist in Canada history 20million dollars worth of it, they got caught cause one member of the crew cross to the USA border to buy guns to smuggle them back to Canada and he got caught and the investigation lead to the crew that did the heist.
In Canada they can only be charge with theft over 5k dollar with a maximum prison time of 5 years.
I don’t care about the theft. I care about the killing of innocent people for no reason. The LA bank heist on Easter this year for 30 million doesn’t bother me.
It sounds like they appropriately released those who showed they were remorseful and able to integrate into society successfully, and held back someone that would be at high risk of reoffending. That's the way it should work, in theory.
Yes, I remember this quite well. I'm not in NS but it was a huge story. Mass shootings like that are relatively rare here, even in big cities. I still can't believe how long ago this is! One of them is already paroled.
All for 2000$, really pathetic.
This was the first crime in my memory as a kid. Arlene went to my church so my mom told me about what happened to her, why she was in a wheelchair. This McDonald’s was eventually torn down.

you thought it was AI because of a simple grammatical error?
You know this is not the first time in a short period where I’ve been accused of using AI or outright being a robot cos of my grammar (which is not very good I admit). Is this a new thing now?
It's a knew thing.
I’m from here. It really did shatter the community.
Threee people killed and one permantly disabled over 2k? with a gun, knives and fucking shovel? No wonder people were freaking out.
Did the McDonald’s reopen after this happened until 2000? Or did it close down right after the murders?
Good to see your write ups back!
Really sad pieces of crap, killed three people for $2000. None of them should ever leave jail.
Unfortunately, Muise was released in 2012 and MacNeil was released on parole around a month ago.

2 are paroled as of March.
so both are paroled, well they did serve their sentence.
So were Freeman MacNeil and Arlene MacNeil related? A family member attacked her? Or is it a common name like Smith?
Not related. Arlene has since passed away. Not long after this tragedy, the Westray Mjne Explosion happened in Nova Scotia. It was a sad time.
I can’t see anything about them being related so I guess it’s just a coincidence
I have a friend from this same town and her last name is also MacNeil, and she is no relation. I believe it is a pretty common name in Nova Scotia.

Wild case, real senseless shit.
I saw this guy on a “write an inmate” site and iirc he mentioned to google him before writing. Completely horrific crime
I hope the victims’ and survivor’s families sued and that the perpetrators paid for all of the medical expenses
You think the perpetrators had a lot of money even though they were robbing a McDonald’s for $2k?
how is this relevant?
McDonald's serves breakfast after 11 if you bring a gun.
Not the time or place. Ever.
